It represents a milestone in fundamental studies on the diffusive transport of lithium ions between two atomically thin layers of carbon (graphene), a highly relevant aspect in electrodes for energy and mass storage in the context of batteries. Further, it is a beautiful example of how interdisciplinary work that combines expertise from two very distinct fields can significantly advance science. Machinery and tools common in the study of low-dimensional systems in condensed matter physics are combined with methods routinely employed in electrochemistry to enable truly unique and powerful experiments. The method developed here can easily be generalized and extended to other layered materials as well as other ionic species. Not only the method but also the outcome of its application to Li diffusion and intercalation in bilayer graphene is remarkable. A record chemical diffusion coefficient is demonstrated, exceeding even the diffusion of sodium chloride in water and surpassing any reported value of ion diffusion in single-phase mixed conducting materials. This finding may be indicative of the exceptional properties yet to be discovered in nanoscale derivatives of bulk insertion compounds.

This book is devoted to the computer modeling of two-dimensional materials consisting of no more than two sheets of graphene or silicene. The results of the investigation of the mechanical and thermal properties of such ultrathin films that are in a free-standing state and, also, located on substrates of silver, copper, and graphite are presented. The thermal stability of copper, nickel, and aluminum films of monatomic thickness on graphene has been studied. The calculated data on the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of single-layer graphene and silicene are presented. The excellent adsorption properties of graphene allow one to use it as a filter. A method for purifying graphene from heavy metals (copper, lead, and mercury) is proposed and implemented in a computer experiment by bombarding a contaminated graphene film on a copper substrate by clusters of noble gases with energies from 5 to 30 eV at various angles of incidence. This method of purifying graphene from mercury is compared with the method of heating this toxic metal deposited on graphene. The book is aimed at creating new composite materials with the use of graphene and silicene. Considerable attention is paid to the creation of high-capacity, rapidly cyclic, long-lived anodes of ionic batteries. Graphene and silicene can be used as anode materials of lithium-ion batteries, while their charge capacity sharply increase and the charging time is shortened. Here, the authors describe the results of the passage of lithium ions through graphene and silicene membranes. Vacancy defects form the holes in these membranes. Further development of electrochemical current sources is constrained due to the lack of suitable anode material. Graphene, and especially silicene, are the main materials for designing the anode of a lithium-ion battery. This book describes computer experiments involving the passage by lithium ions through the graphene, silicene, and silicene-graphene channels formed by corresponding perfect sheets and sheets containing vacancy defects. The processes of intercalation and deintercalation of lithium into silicene channels of various degrees of defectiveness located on a silver and copper substrate are considered. The lithium ion moving in the electric field along the channel is considered as a probe for determining the detailed structure of the channel. This approach allows us to investigate the surrounding of the ion by both Si-rings and Si-polyhedra. The prospect of using silicene on pyrolytic graphite as an anode material is examined. Computer tests are supported by the calculation of the energy, kinetic and mechanical characteristics of the functional elements of the anode. In each case, all components of the stress tensor of a two-dimensional material are determined. Serving as insulators between electrodes to prevent internal short circuits, these separators play a crucial role in retaining liquid electrolyte and facilitating the migration of lithium ions during battery cycling. In the face of increasing demand for high-performance LIBs across diverse applications, the development of superior separators is imperative. Among the various advancements in battery separator research, electrospun nanofibrous separators have gained significant attention. These separators exhibit compelling characteristics, including large pore size (typically above 500 nm), high porosity (typically above 70%), and an interconnected porous structure, all of which enhance ion transportation efficiency and battery cycling performance. However, a notable focus in previous studies has been on electrochemical inert materials as battery separators, which do not contribute to the battery's capacity. This book presents a comprehensive study that introduces a novel concept: the development of a redox-active separator based on electrospun polypyrrole (PPy) composite nanofibers to significantly enhance battery capacity. The book begins by exploring the effects of separators on battery performance, providing valuable insights and guidance for separator design. Then, a detailed investigation into the kinetics of in-situ polymerization of PPy with electrospun fibrous membranes as templates follows, shedding light on the mechanisms behind fabricating the proposed separator. On the other hand, the advancement of electronics requires the development of new and cheaper materials: semiconductors, insulators, materials with magnetic, ferrimagnetic or piezoelectric properties, etc. The desired properties of materials or their surface layers depend on chemical composition, dopants, and the concentration of point defects, through which the transport of ions and electrons takes place. The functional properties also depend on the nuances of production technologies which allow to obtain a specific texture and a desired concentration of ionic and electronic point defects. The monograph follows up on the issues related to the concentration of charge carriers in pure and doped oxides. Based on the diagrams of the concentration of point defects, the calculation results of the concentration of charge carriers and their mobility are presented, using the results of the studies on the electrical conductivity and the thermoelectric power in some specific oxides of 3d metals. In turn, the results of calculations of the ionic defect diffusion coefficients, conducted using the coefficients of self-diffusion and chemical diffusion as well as the concentration of ionic defects in these oxides, are presented. The given material will be useful to a wide range of researchers and developers of new materials with a wide range of required properties.

This book highlights the use/application of Vanadium Oxide as a Supercapacitor (SC) material using the electrodeposition method. The preparation methods, material characterization, and performance testing of VOx-based SC are thoroughly discussed. Electrolyte solutions from VCl3 and other metal precursors are used to form V3O5 electrodes on nickel foam (NF). The cathode can deliver a specific capacitance value of 5689 F/g. The work is improved by depositing V3O5 film on Ni(OH)2 to form a bilayer coating on NF substrate. Ni(OH)2 with a nano-sheet structure is used for the purpose of increasing the specific surface area of V3O5 layer which can achieve specific capacitance of 7500 F/g, the energy density of 167 Wh/kg, and the power density of 199 W/kg. After 10,000 charge-discharge cycles, the capacitance retention rate is 93%. Finally, a full cell SC is assembled using the bilayer electrode and active carbon. The asymmetric and symmetric full cells performed the specific capacitances of 390 F/g and 846 F/g, the energy densities of 286 Wh/kg and 170 Wh/kg, and the power densities of 1149 W/kg and 602 W/g, respectively. After 10,000 charge-discharge cycles, the capacitance retention rates of asymmetric and symmetric full cells are 97% and 95%, respectively.
