Early childhood is characterized by robust developmental changes in cognitive control. However, our understanding of intra-individual change in neural indices of cognitive control during this period remains limited. Here, we examined developmental changes in event-related potential (ERP) indices of cognitive control from preschool through first grade, in a large and diverse sample of children (N = 257). We recorded ERPs during a visual Go/No-Go task. N2 and P3b mean amplitudes were extracted from the observed waveforms (Go and No-Go) and the difference wave (No-Go minus Go, or ∆). Latent growth curve modeling revealed that while N2 Go and No-Go amplitudes showed no linear change, P3b Go and No-Go amplitudes displayed linear decreases in magnitude (became less positive) over time. ∆N2 amplitude demonstrated a linear increase in magnitude (became more negative) over time whereas ∆P3b amplitude was more positive in kindergarten compared to preschool. Younger age in preschool predicted greater rates of change in ∆N2 amplitude, and higher maternal education predicted larger initial P3b Go and No-Go amplitudes in preschool. Our findings suggest that observed waveforms and difference waves are not interchangeable for indexing neurodevelopment, and the developmental trajectories of different ERP indices of cognitive control are component-specific in early childhood.

Previous research on boredom suggest it function as animportant self-regulatory signal, indicating that the currentstate of the environment carries opportunity-costs andtherefore driving the need to explore alternative activities. Traitboredom proneness is associated with negative consequencesincluding increased risk-taking and impulsivity. Thesefindings often rely on self-reports and not much is known aboutthe role of state and trait boredom in controlled laboratorytasks, or their neural correlates. Sixty-two participantscompleted the Balloon Analogue Risk Task and a go/no-gotask while electrical brain activity was recorded using EEG.Results showed that state boredom leads to impulsivity andpoor performance monitoring, as evident by behavioral,subjective and ERP metrics. Trait boredom was associatedwith increased risk-taking, and modulated the correlationbetween errors and state boredom: high boredom pronenessincreased the sensitivity of trait boredom to errors. Overall,these findings emphasize the involvement of executivefunctions in the interaction between state and trait boredom.

The ability to plan, inhibit, and execute motor movements areall necessary for achieving goal-directed behavior. Theseprocesses are closely related to memory, as perceptual inputand memory of that input often recruit motor movements.Unknown, however, is how the engagement of perception-action processes impact the memory of objects. One suchinteraction suggests that participants have worse memory recallfor stimuli which elicit inhibition of a motor response thanstimuli which afford the execution of a motor response (Chiu& Egner, 2015). This effect has been explained throughcompetition for common neural resources: allocation ofresources toward response inhibition reduces the amount ofresources available for memory. Alternatively, this effect couldbe driven at the level of perception-action coupling: engagingand pairing the motor system with visual perception enhancesthe memory of stimuli which elicited the motor preparation orresponse. To test these hypotheses, we first replicated Chiu andEgner (2015). In Experiment 2, we included neutral stimuli thatdid not necessitate motor preparation processes. Memory wasenhanced for stimuli presented in conjunction with motorengagement, providing evidence for an account of memory thatis facilitated when coupled with the motor system.

We examined differences in regional brain activation during tests of executive function in individuals with Hoarding Disorder (HD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), and healthy controls (HC) using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Participants completed computerized versions of the Stroop and Go/No-Go task. We found that during the conflict monitoring and response inhibition condition in the Go/No-Go task, individuals with HD had significantly greater activity than controls in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) and right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). HD also exhibited significantly greater right DLPFC activity than OCD. We also observed significant differences in activity between HD and HC and between HD and OCD in regions (ACC, anterior insula, orbitofrontal cortex, and striatum) involved in evaluating stimulus-response-reward associations, or the personal and task-relevant value of stimuli and behavioral responses to stimuli. These results support the hypothesis that individuals with HD have difficulty deciding on the value or task relevance of stimuli, and may perceive an abnormally high risk of negative feedback for difficult or erroneous cognitive behavior.

Men and women show important differences in clinical conditions in which deficits in cognitive control are implicated. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine gender differences in the neural processes of cognitive control during a stop-signal task. We observed greater activation in men, compared to women, in a wide array of cortical and sub-cortical areas, during stop success (SS) as compared to stop error (SE). Conversely, women showed greater regional brain activation during SE > SS, compared to men. Furthermore, compared to women, men engaged the right inferior parietal lobule to a greater extent during post-SE go compared to post-go go trials. Women engaged greater posterior cingulate cortical activation than men during post-SS slowing in go trial reaction time (RT) but did not differ during post-SE slowing in go trial RT. These findings extended our previous results of gender differences in regional brain activation during response inhibition. The results may have clinical implications by, for instance, helping initiate studies to understand why women are more vulnerable to depression while men are more vulnerable to impulse control disorders.

Although aging is accompanied by neurobiological changes and increased susceptibility to many neurological disorders, little is known about neurophysiological changes that start in old age. Here, neurophysiological changes during old age were assessed by recording brain potentials associated with motor preparation and stimulus expectancy (contingent negative variation, CNV) in young-old (60-69), oldest-old (85-98), and young (17-23) subjects. Individual trials began by a button press, followed 2.5 s later by either a low or high pitch tone. In the "motor" condition subjects responded following high pitch tones (P=0.20); in the "non-motor" condition subjects did not respond. Motor condition CNV amplitudes in the oldest old were more positive than the young and young-old groups, which were similar. In the non-motor condition, the young-old and oldest-old had similar CNV amplitudes that were positive in polarity, and were significantly different from young subjects. Motor potentials before button presses that started the trials were comparable among groups. Results show that neural activity associated with motor preparation and stimulus expectancy changes during advanced age, and that group differences can be modulated by task requirements.
