The first quarter century of the ICCE brought us motion-compensated de-interlacing & picture-rate conversion, resolution up-conversion, flat panel displays and HDTV. The paper gives an overview and points at new challenges for signal processing, broadcast formats and display technologies.

This paper proposes the network structure and service model to deliver new traffic and travel information (TTI) services over terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) and a bidirectional network. We have newly specified a POI (point-of-interest) and a NWS (news information) application services which are perfectly compatible with TPEG (transport protocol expert group) protocols, and implemented T-DMB based TTI systems including TPEG encoder/decoder and a return-channel server system through CDMA as a bidirectional network. In the real-field environment as verifying the proposed services and systems above, we showed their stability and effectiveness by the excellent results in this paper.

In December 2005, Korea launched terrestrial DMB (T-DMB) services for the first time in the world, making multimedia broadcasting services available in the mobile environment. In addition to high-quality digital radio (audio) and television (video), diverse data services, such as traffic and travel information, BIFS, and visual radio, are currently being serviced. At the moment, there are no mobile/portable T-DMB terminals in the market that can support all the data services available. In this paper, we present a low-power portable T-DMB receiver, which can decode not only T-DMB video services but also various data services. In particular, it can simultaneously decode DMB video and data services within the same ensemble.

This paper describes the personalized audio broadcasting services through the terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) system. This system consists of preprocessing module, authoring module, T-DMB transmission/reception module and playing terminal. Through this system user can control the 3D audio scene freely or choose the preset 3D audio scene. This system can be applied to DMB, 3DTV and home shopping applications to provide interactivity and realistic feelings.

In this paper, we evaluate the mobile reception performance of digital terrestrial television broadcasting with switch diversity. Our system exploits new channel estimation in order to tackle the problem of channel estimation errors when an antenna switches. As a result of simulation, we show that our system improves CNR to 2.5 dB which is better than maximum-ratio combining at 2times10-2 BER with maximum Doppler frequency of 20 Hz, by increasing slight complexity. Moreover, we have developed a prototype system, and have shown a good reception performance in outdoor fields.

This paper presents the supplementary reference sequence (SRS) part of the advanced VSB (A-VSB) system which is proposed for the terrestrial television broadcast system. The SRS VSB system offers more frequent training signals than VSB system to mitigate dynamic multipaths.

This paper examines the interference mechanisms by which signals on first adjacent channels to any DTV channel may cause harmful interference, and how signals on any UHF channel formerly considered to be a UHF taboo channel (and hence left vacant) may cause interference to digital terrestrial television broadcasting (DTTB) reception. Further, the non-linearity of receivers under strong signal conditions from two or more undesired signals on certain pairs of channels can cause interference to reception of signals on two UHF DTV channels.

In this paper, we present the architecture of the interactive T-DMB receiver with a CDMA module for new services linked with the telecommunication network. After implemented it as hardware and software, we verify it by the interactive data service through the T-DMB and the CDMA network. This shows the possibilities of new interactive services in the digital broadcasting by utilizing the mobility of T-DMB and CDMA.

Multimedia transmission is widely available over wired networks. With the advent of low-cost WLAN devices, the wireless delivery of multimedia content is highly desirable. However, for media requiring low end-to-end latency, the use of WLAN technology introduces many significant challenges. These challenges are further enhanced if multicast/broadcast transmission is employed to serve a wide range of wireless terminals. This paper provides an understanding of the practical issues associated with WLAN multimedia transmission. A cross-layer measurement programme is performed to identify design issues for low-cost off-the-shelf WLAN multimedia systems. Problems identified include i) broadcast/multicast transmission using the slowest link-speed, ii) common link adaptation mechanisms for all clients, iii) lack of a call admission policy, and iv) irreducible PER even in good channel conditions.

Data services in terrestrial-digital multimedia broadcasting (T-DMB) inherently have the disadvantage of retransmitting data unnecessarily for reliability. This paper proposes a novel optimized transmission policy using segment size and repetition number variability, which maximizes the object-level throughput. The theoretical modeling and simulation results demonstrate that our policy provides a throughput gain over the conventional protocol.

This paper presents the turbo part of the advanced VSB (A-VSB) system which is proposed for the terrestrial television broadcast system. The turbo VSB system makes 8 VSB signals robust by introducing a strong forward-error-correction code called turbo code.

In order to integrate broadcast communication technologies like DVB-H and MBMS in a heterogeneous system, different mechanisms have to be developed, both on the mobile user terminal and on the network infrastructure. This paper presents the framework developed in the Daidalos-II (FP6) project for supporting broadcast integration with heterogeneous wireless networks with a focus on the development of a hybrid terminal.

This paper proposes a suboptimal peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction scheme, which is based on the time- and frequency-domain clippings, and presents its performance evaluation results for the European standard for terrestrial digital video broadcast (DVB-T) system.

This includes mobile TV, copy protection and management as well as the implementation support of services such as HDTV and interactivity.

The requirements for car infotainment systems are changing quickly. There is an increasing demand to support media content, which is normally found in a consumer electronics home and mobile environment such as DVD video playback, watching digital video broadcast, and listening to digital audio files. A modular architecture based on fast serial interfaces is presented. It allows to design car infotainment systems, which can address a variety of market segments and feature sets with a single modular architecture and which enable the manufacturer to respond quickly to the changing requirements.

To construct an energy-efficient wireless home network based on IEEE 802.15.4, a novel architecture is proposed. In this architecture, all nodes are classified into stationary nodes and mobile nodes according to the functionality of each node. Mobile nodes are usually battery-powered, and therefore need low-power operation. In order to improve power consumption of mobile nodes, effective handover sequence based on MAC broadcast and transmission power control based on LQ (link quality) are employed. Experimental results demonstrate that by using the proposed architecture, communication time and power consumption of mobile nodes can be reduced by 1.2 seconds and 42.8%, respectively.

Amplitude-DQPSK modulation method is proposed for a high-data-rate T-DMB system with the backward compatibility to existing receivers. Simulation results show that the proposed A-DQPSK can be a good choice to achieve high-data rate over other possible modulation schemes.
