A conformai patch antenna operating in the TM01 mode is integrated over an electromagnetic bandgap surface (EBG) to provide a beam scanning antenna. The circular EBG elements are arranged in a sector pattern and the vias on each sector of the EBG are switched in and out to steer the beam into that sector. The reflection coefficients for the antenna when the vias are switched remain stable and experimental results validate the simulations. Overall a flexible beam scanned antenna is demonstrated.

This paper continues previous research into radiation hazard assessment of BBC World Service HF transmission sites in accordance with ICNIRP guidelines. It focuses on possible methodologies for the analysis of human exposure from such sites. A high resolution full body human voxel phantom from the ‘Virtual Family’ was illuminated using plane-wave radiation, and being positioned in the near-field zone of a realistic HF curtain antenna array. The mutual relationship between the electromagnetic near-field of high power transmission sites and human body's whole body SAR and associated induced current densities have been studied. The phantom's whole body SAR results are compared with those published by the UK Health Protection Agency (HPA). A hybrid computational technique has also been explored.

A 450 MHz miniaturised split ring antenna loaded with lumped element capacitors is presented. The antenna is placed over a small artificial magnetic conductor to form a very compact, conformal platform tolerant antenna. Significant bandwidth and gain improvements are achieved for the combined structure when compared to the performance of the antenna alone. The overall thickness of the structure is 15.2mm and the antenna maximum dimension is 78mm which corresponds to λ/44 and λ/9 respectively at 450 MHz.

In this paper, we present the performance of a compact textile coplanar antenna under different bending and crumpling conditions. Both input impedance and radiation patterns are investigated based on numerical and experimental methods at 2.45 GHz.

This paper presents a new approach for transmitting signals across the surface of the human body. This involves using a length of stripline. Off-body communication can also be achieved by using a pair of microstrip dipoles. These dipoles operate within the 2.45 GHz ISM band. Four microwave switches are used to reconfigure the structure.

This paper investigates the fundamental properties of metallised elastomers at microwave frequencies for microwave transmission line and wireless antenna applications. Stretchable or elastic antennas will significantly expand stretchable electronics applications both in the communication and biomedical sectors. Fundamental electromagnetic characterisations of elastic transmission line and antennas are evaluated using simulation software CST. A self compensating elastic antenna is presented.

A low profile antenna consisting of a wideband monopole over an artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) is presented in this paper. The AMC is a dual band structure, manufactured on 3.2mm thick FR-4 substrate with the reflection phase in the 2.0 GHz and 5.8 GHz ranges. A wideband printed circular disc monopole antenna uses this dual band AMC as a ground plane resulting in a low profile multiband antenna system with a height of 7.8mm. The frequency bands covered are at GPS (1.57542 GHz), DCS (1.710–1.880 GHz), PCS (1.850–1.990 GHz), UMTS (1.925–2.175 GHz), WLAN (2.4–2.485 GHz), WiFi (5.15–5.825 GHz) and V2X (5.76–5.84 GHz). It is demonstrated that the boresight gain increases when the AMC is used as a ground plane for the antenna in conjunction with a large metal plate.
