Maize (Zea mays) is moderately sensitive to salt stress. Therefore, increasing salinity in soil causes the arrestment of physiological processes and retention of growth and development, consequently leading to yield loss. Although many strategies have been launched to improve salt stress tolerance, plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) are considered the most promising approach due to being more environmentally friendly and agronomically sustainable than chemicals. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the potential of Bacillus spp. and the role of microRNA-mediated genetic regulation in maize subjected to seed bio-priming application to mitigate salt stress effects. To this end, maize seeds were bio-primed with the vegetative form of B. pumilus, B. licheniformis, and B. coagulans both individually or combined, subsequently treated to NaCl, and the seedlings were screened morphologically, physiologically, and transcriptionally. The study revealed that seed bio-priming with B. licheniformis reduced the stress effects of maize seedlings by increasing catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities by 2.5- and 3-fold, respectively, tolerating the decrease in chlorophyll content (CC), upregulating miR160d expression which led to a 36% increase in root fresh weight (RFW) and a 39% increase in shoot fresh weight (SFW). The present study reports pollution evaluation indices employed to assess the intensity of metal pollution in water systems affected by acid mine drainage from rat-hole coal mines prevalent in North-east India. The concentration of seven eco-toxic metals was evaluated from coal mine waters which showed concentration order of Iron (Fe) > Manganese (Mn) > Zinc (Zn) > Chromium (Cr) > Lead (Pb) > Copper (Cu) > Cadmium (Cd). The water samples were acidic with mean pH 2.67 and burdened with dissolved solids (924.8 mg/L). The heavy metal pollution index (HPI) and heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) displayed high and medium range of pollution level in majority of the water samples. Statistical correlation suggested strong positive correlation between metals such as Cr with Mn (r = 0.780), Mn with Fe (r = 0.576), Cr with Fe (r = 0.680), Pb with Mn (r = 0.579) and Cr with Pb (r = 0.606), indicating Mn, Pb, Fe and Cr to be major metal contaminants; an unequivocal affirmation of degradation in water quality. The sampled waters had lower heavy metal concentration during monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. The commonly occurring bacterial species Bacillus pseudomycoides and Bacillus siamensis were chosen to understand their behavioral responses toward metal contamination. Findings demonstrated that Bacillus spp. from control environment had low tolerance to metals stress as evident from their MTC, MIC and growth curve studies. The survival of the native isolates across varying pH, salinity and temperature in the coal mine areas suggest these isolates as promising candidates for reclamation of rat-hole coal mining sites. The aims of this work were to screen isolated bacteria with a dual capacity: to inhibit Fusarium solani and to promote plant growth. Also, volatile compounds that would be responsible for that effect were identified. Seventy bacterial strains from the air, agricultural soils, hydrocarbons-contaminated soils, and extremophile soils were tested. The former were identified by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and 16S rDNA sequencing. The plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and their capability for phosphate solubilization, siderophores production, and indole production were determined. Twenty isolates from Bacillus and Pseudomonas genera inhibited the mycelial growth up to 40% in direct assays. Eleven isolates significantly inhibited mycelial growth in 18–24% via volatile emissions. Volatile compounds related to antifungal activity or stress response include ketones, sesquiterpenes, monoterpenoids, alkanes, and fatty acids. Our results support the potential of these PGPB to act as biocontrol agents against fungal pathogens via volatile emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
