Although time affects how individuals interact together in teams, we know little about how time influences the evolution of conflict interactions and their impact on important team outcomes. Conflict dynamics is likely to determine the extent to which team members create new products, perform, and stay viable over time. Our symposium brings together five papers which examine conflict dynamics using different research approaches and theoretical perspectives. The current collection of papers contribute to research on team dynamics, creativity, team composition, conflict management, and learning; and has important implications for theory, research methods advancement, and practice on how to make teams more effective. Scientific research and its translation into commercialized technology is a driver of wealth creation and economic growth. Partnerships to foster such translational processes between public research organizations, such as universities and hospitals, and private firms are a policy tool that has attracted increased interest. Yet questions about the efficacy and the efficiency with which funds are used are subject to frequent debate. This paper examines empirical data from the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation (DNATF), an agency that funds partnerships between universities and private companies to develop technologies important to Danish industry. We assess the effect of a unique mediated funding scheme that combines project grants with active facilitation and conflict management on innovative performance, namely the quantity, citation count and collaborative nature of patents and papers, by comparing funded and unfunded firms. The Lewicki-Robinson (1998) "Incidents in Negotiation" questionnaire measures the perceived ethicality of eighteen negotiation tactics or behaviors. While there is a presumption that the attitudes or intentions measured in this questionnaire are precursors to actual behavior, there have been no studies or direct evidence of a connection. This paper reports on a study examining the links between attitudes, intentions, and behaviors for five tactics from the questionnaire, using a two-party, buyer-seller negotiation to measure behavior. The results of the analysis suggest significant correlations between attitudes and intentions, attitudes and behaviors, and intentions and behaviors for at least four of the five tactics. In addition, there was evidence of a mediating effect of intentions on the attitude-behavior relationship for two of the five tactics.

In this paper, I review literature related to conflict management and negotiation as it pertains to the behaviors negotiators choose in collective bargaining. I do this in an attempt to reconcile a macro-level theory on labor relations, the industrial relations system (IRS), with a micro-level theory of individual conflict behavior, the dual concern model. I use these contrasting frameworks in order to explore both commonalities and differences between them. In doing so, I focus particularly on power, interdependence, and trust, concepts that can be examined from both economic and psychological perspectives. Furthermore, I explore some of the relationships between structural factors and negotiator cognition and how these together affect negotiator behavior. I find that both frameworks provide insights that help explain negotiating behavior, but they offer very different and distinct perspectives.
