A central issue in strategy concerns how established firms survive and sustain their competitive advantage in the face of technological change. In line with the evolutionary view of technological change, I explore how firms that leverage their prior experience across different domains (i.e., markets/industries) stand a higher chance of embracing and even initiating a new technological trajectory. Building on insights from an in-depth study on Corning's pioneering work in fiber optics, I develop the notion of technological pre-adaptation to describe that part of a firm's prior experience that is accumulated without anticipation of subsequent uses. Legitimacy of a candidate’s proposal depends on the social consensus among relevant audiences defining the proposal’s acceptability and appropriateness relative to existing norms. Yet norms used to assess acceptability and appropriateness often differ in their degree of interpretability. Whereas past studies assumed normative convergence at the theoretical and empirical levels between multiple audiences (e.g., media, legitimating agencies, and people) on their assessments of firms’ behavior, we study when such a consensus is reached. Drawing on the multiple interpretations and understandings of norms among audiences, we study how much people complain against firms’ advertising to a self-regulatory agency depending on how media report these agency’s decisions and on which norms are infringed. Using a social network lens, we look at collaboration networks between authors and inventors. Specifically, we study how the presence of publishing inventors in an R&D team affects the quality of the inventions to which they contribute. We analyze the characteristics of publishing inventors by identifying those who span the same or distinct groups in the co-authorship network and thereby provide access to more or less redundant knowledge. Publishing inventors also can play a pivotal role in holding the co- authorship and co-invention networks together by serving as cutpoints – i.e., occupying a gatekeeping position between the two networks. The results of the analysis suggest that publishing inventors who connect the team with which they are involved to diverse (non-overlapping) groups in the co-authorship network and serve as cutpoints are more likely to contribute to inventions (patents) of greater quality. We tested our hypotheses in the emerging field of nanotechnology.
