We re‐examine the cross‐sectional stock return predictability of innovative originality documented in the 2018 paper by Hirshleifer et al. and introduce two measures of patenting activity: patent existence and patent counts. As firms with zero patents have zero innovative originality, we conjecture and find a high correlation between patenting activity measures and innovative originality. The findings of Hirshleifer et al. do not hold when we control for patenting activity. Our results highlight that simple patenting activity measures capture a significant portion of innovative originality, and hence need to be adequately controlled for in future innovation studies. In this paper, we study the impact of endogenous innovation and the external technological environment on total factor productivity. We first develop an endogenous growth model and derive a testable empirical model. We then estimate the empirical model based on the World Bank's worldwide enterprise survey data for 119 countries spanning 2007–2017. Our results suggest that: (i) enterprises' R&D activity increases their total factor productivity; (ii) a higher level of external technology weakens the impact of the R&D activity on total factor productivity; and (iii) enterprises located in low‐ and middle‐income countries often lack continuous innovation. Internal governance is the monitoring of a CEO by immediate subordinate executives with different career horizons. In this paper, we examine the role of internal governance on corporate innovation. Conducting a study of privately owned firms listed in China, we find that internal governance significantly increases firms' innovation investment, but we uncover little evidence that it affects innovation quality as indicated by patents. We further discuss that a possible channel for increased innovation investment is enhanced decision‐making quality. Regarding the quality of innovation, executives' knowledge plays a larger role than internal governance. This paper analyses the different effects of foreign venture capital (FVC) and domestic venture capital (DVC) on innovation for IPOs. Using patent counts to measure innovation, the results indicate that FVC‐backed firms are less innovative than DVC‐backed firms. Our findings are robust after controlling for the sample selection bias using a propensity score matching approach. We synthesise the empirical studies on innovation in the accounting, finance, and corporate governance disciplines using Bushman and Smith's corporate transparency framework as our theoretical lens. The review presents competing findings on the association between financial reporting and innovation. Most of the reviewed studies fail to address the critical question of how the financial reporting system affects the interactions among financial development, corporate governance and innovation. This paper examines market concentration and stock returns on the Australian Securities Exchange. We find that dominant companies operating in concentrated industries in Australia are able to generate significant risk-adjusted excess stock returns. Our results for Australian data are opposite to that found by Hou and Robinson (2006) for United States market data. Hou and Robinson reason that United States firms which operate in concentrated industries are insulated from competitive pressures, have lower levels of innovation (Arrow, 1962) and therefore experience lower profitability and stock returns. By contrast, the Australian data show a significant and positive relationship between concentration and innovation expenditure. Therefore, the excess stock returns of dominant companies in Australia are consistent with previous research linking innovation expenditure with excess stock returns. We hypothesize that the apparent contradiction of our results compared with Hou and Robinson (2006) for the United States market is resolved by an examination of the differences in size and competition in United States and Australian industries and the consequent differential ability of dominant companies in the two countries to generate monopoly rents and invest in ' Schumpeterian' (Schumpeter, 1942) innovation. Factor misallocation has significant effects on productivity and innovation. Innovation is widely regarded as the most important element for economic growth. This article aims to study how capital and labour distortions influence innovation activities in China. We apply system generalised methods of moments using a natural experiment with an exogenous shock. The results indicate that the measurements for factor misallocation are significantly negatively correlated to innovation. We study how listing status affects corporate innovation and total factor productivity (TFP) in the Chinese capital market. Using a new data set of R&D investment and patent information on both industrial unlisted and listed firms, the following empirical findings are obtained: (i) firms experience an increase in innovation input and a decrease in innovation output following the initial public offering (IPO); and (ii) the decrease in innovation output significantly impedes TFP. We identify two possible mechanisms through which IPOs affect innovation activities: agency problems and easier access to funding. The results are robust to the propensity score‐matching approach that addresses selection bias. The analysis reveals that firms face a trade‐off between financing advantages and a potential decrease in innovation and productivity during the transition to public equity markets. Most Form 10‐K filings include non‐informative innovation‐related words. This study shows that textual emphasis on innovation (TEI) reflects the firm's intention to focus on the long term and finds TEI to be trustworthy. TEI is positively associated with a firm's long‐term investment and negatively associated with a firm's under‐investment. Trustworthiness increases when the firm is subject to increased scrutiny. However, this signal is costly, because it is associated with over‐investment in innovation. This study investigates how pre‐grant patent disclosures required by the American Inventors Protection Act (AIPA) affect the value of innovation. The accelerated disclosures instituted by the AIPA may benefit innovative firms by either reducing duplicative R&D projects or by facilitating prompt, beneficial knowledge spillovers among firms. However, early innovation disclosures may result in proprietary costs and reduce competitive advantages. Our results indicate that when firms engage in quality innovation as captured by patent citations or originality, they have more efficient innovation output after the passage of the AIPA, and their innovation output is more strongly associated with future earnings. We find that entrepreneurs’ migrant background is positively related to firm innovation level, and that this relation is weakened by a less supportive environment. We also find that migrant entrepreneurs have a higher propensity to take risks than their local peers. Further analyses show that the relationship between migrant background and innovation varies in times of uncertainty and that entrepreneurs’ migrant background is positively associated with innovation quality, innovation efficiency and firm performance. This study investigates the long‐term role of innovation in the Chinese IPO market. Innovation outcome (patent) has a promoting effect on the long‐term market, while innovation input (R&D) shows a variable inhibitory control, which turns into a favourable impact four years after the IPO due to lag and cumulative effects. Moreover, this inhibitory effect increases and has no positive turnback in firms with R&D myopic management. Furthermore, government subsidies strengthen the effect of innovation during different periods while weakening the positive effect of innovation input four years after the IPO due to firms' rent‐seeking behaviour aiming to obtain government funds. We examine whether corporate decisions such as share repurchases influence a firm's intangible assets and their production. We find a significantly negative relationship between share repurchases and firm innovation. The negative relationship survives all considered robustness tests. We further apply two identification strategies, namely, difference‐in‐differences analysis and instrumental variables estimation, to establish that the negative effect is causal; that is, from share repurchases to innovation. As automation catalyses the shift from number‐crunching to more complex roles spanning risk management and strategic decision‐making, it is important that higher education is developing the capabilities for Accounting and Finance graduates to successfully contribute to innovation. The study gauges the development of innovative capabilities among students and new graduates using national data from 2012 to 2015. It identifies gaps in the development of certain capabilities, discusses the implications of these and presents strategies for improvement. Findings will inform stakeholders how to better prepare these graduates to contribute to innovation and, ultimately, improve economic growth and global competitiveness in Australia. Using a sample of large US firms, this study shows that blockholders in combination with liquidity can contribute positively to innovation (R&D investments). We contribute to the literature on managerial myopia that has focused mainly on large owners and their type (short‐term/long‐term). Our results are in line with recent theoretical studies arguing that blockholders in combination with market liquidity can mitigate managerial myopia, as suggested by the exit model of governance. The results indicate that blockholders can be efficient in resolving agency problems and that they can enhance long‐term prosperity, even when the individual blockholder investment horizon may not be long. This article examines the effect of institutional investors' investment horizons on firms' innovation activities. We conjecture that the presence of long‐term institutional investors mitigates managerial myopia, prompting firms to generate greater corporate innovation outputs. Using data on patents and patent citations for US firms, we find that institutions' investment horizons are positively related to the number of patents and patent citations. We also document that long‐term (short‐term) institutional ownership is positively (negatively) related to the innovation outputs.
