11. Constructing Si/6H-SiC Heterostructure As a High-Performance Anode for Boosting Lithium-Ion Storage

Abstract

Silicon (Si) anodes offer significant potential due to their high capacity. However, their drastic volume change limits their utility, resulting in a shorter cycling life. In this paper, microsilicon particles and 6H-SiC particles were ball-milled and subsequently coated a layer of amorphous carbon, yielding Si/SiC@C composites. Computational and experimental results reveal that this heterostructure formed between Si and 6H-SiC enhances the electronic conductivity of the Si/SiC@C composites dramatically, as well as the Li ion diffusion rate. Thereby, the Si/6H-SiC heterostructure increases capacity and enhances the rate capability of the Si-based anode. Significantly, the conductivity of Si/SiC@C composites surpasses that of Si@C composites by a factor of around 330. Furthermore, tough, evenly distributed, and electrochemically inert 6H-SiC serves as a rigid framework. By reducing the expansion rate of Si-based anodes and mitigating mechanical stress during cycles, this improves the cycling stability. Additionally, the Si/SiC@C anodes demonstrate superior cycle performance (814.6 mAh g–1at 1 A g–1after 400 cycles with capacity retention of 88.0%) and excellent rate capability (762 mAh g–1at 5 A g–1).

22. Danger in the Dark: Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells with Varied Stoichiometries and Morphologies Stressed at Various Conditions

Abstract

The long-term stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) remains a bottleneck for commercialization. While studies on the stoichiometry and morphology of PSCs with regard to performance are prevalent, understanding the influence of these factors on their long-term stability is lacking. In this work, we evaluate the impact of stoichiometry and morphology on the long-term stability of cesium formamidinium-based PSCs. We demonstrate that the lead iodide (PbI2) to formamidinium iodide (FAI) ratio influences stability under various stress factors (elevated temperature and light). A high molar ratio (PbI2/FAI > 1.1) in the perovskite precursor displays drastic degradation under ISOS-L1 (100 mW/cm2, 25 °C, maximum power point tracking) conditions. However, postdegradation analysis contradicts these results. Devices with PbI2/FAI ≤ 1.1 are stable under light, but intermittent current density–voltage characterizations indicate that device performance decreases during storage in the dark. Migration of iodide (I–) ions to the electron-transport layer (ETL) and iodine vacancies (VI–+) to the hole-transport layer (HTL) forms localized shunts in the absorber layer. Pinhole formation, surrounded by FA+-rich regions, explains the extent of damage in comparably aged films. In summary, this work emphasizes the importance of reporting stability under different stress conditions, coupled with postdegradation and dark recovery analyses of PSCs to better understand the complexities of perovskite instability under real-life conditions such as expected during outdoor operation.

31. “Magnet” Based on Activated Silver Nanoparticles Adsorbed Bacteria to Predict Refractory Apical Periodontitis Via Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering

Abstract

Refractory apical periodontitis (RAP) is an endodontic apical inflammatory disease caused by Enterococcus faecalis(E. faecalis). Bacterial detection using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology is a hot research topic, but the specific and direct detection of oral bacteria is a challenge, especially in real clinical samples. In this paper, we develop a novel SERS-based green platform for label-free detection of oral bacteria. The platform was built on silver nanoparticles with a two-step enhancement way using NaBH4and sodium (Na+) to form “hot spots,” which resulted in an enhanced SERS fingerprint of E. faecaliswith fast, quantitative, lower-limit, reproducibility, and stability. In combination with machine learning, four different oral bacteria (E. faecalis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Streptococcus mutans,and Escherichia coli) could be intelligently distinguished. The unlabeled detection method emphasized the specificity of E. faecalisin simulated saliva, serum, and even real samples from patients with clinical root periapical disease. In addition, the assay has been shown to be environmentally friendly and without secondary contamination through antimicrobial assays. The proposed label-free, rapid, safe, and green SERS detection strategy for oral bacteria provided an innovative solution for the early diagnosis and prevention of RAP and other perioral diseases.

Abstract

Inefficient differentiation and poor engraftment hinder the clinical applications of mesenchymal stem cell (MSC)-based cell therapies in regenerative medicine. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles are sheet-like materials with desirable biocompatibility and anion-exchange properties and have been widely applied as drug and nucleotide carriers in the field of tissue repair. However, few studies have focused on the biological effects of LDH itself. In this study, we demonstrated the novel function of LDH in stimulating osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow-derived MSCs (BMSCs). The expression of osteogenic-related genes, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and calcium deposits were significantly increased after LDH treatment. Mechanistic analysis performed with RNA sequencing revealed that LDH promoted osteogenesis by targeting the LGR5/β-catenin axis. LDH also inactivated IKK/NF-κB signaling under LPS-triggered inflamed conditions, suggesting the dual benefits of LDH in enhancing bone regeneration and alleviating the inflammatory response. Furthermore, we utilized LDH as the transport vehicle of the osteoinductive miRNA let-7d to synergistically regulate BMSCs toward the osteoblastic lineage. The LDH/let-7d complex resulted in a better induction of osteogenesis than LDH alone. For cell transplantation, BMSCs were seeded in LDH/let-7d-incorporated fibrin scaffolds, which proved enhanced osteoinduction capability in the subcutaneous ectopic osteogenesis model in nude mice. Taken together, this study provides a novel strategy for effective and synergistic improvement of osteogenesis via LDH-mediated delivery of miRNA let-7d, thus shedding light on the future application of LDH in regenerative medicine.

Abstract

The structural tailoring of pores is essential to high-performance Fe/N/C electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Current strategies for pore structure engineering are usually accompanied with a drastic change of the intrinsic activity-related surface, which may mask the real effects of the porous structure on ORR activity. Herein, a mild carbon dioxide (CO2) etching method was used to flexibly tailor the pore structure of Fe/N/C electrocatalysts without drastic changes in their surface structure and property. In this way, via employing the Fe/N/C electrocatalysts as a model, the intrinsic impact of the pore structure on ORR activity was revealed. In addition, the CO2 etching method developed a high-quality electrocatalyst (sample Fe/N/C-5% CO2) with polarization performance exceeding that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst in the fuel cell working voltage region (>0.65 V). This work will promote the ongoing intensive studies on the rational design of the pore structures in the Fe/N/C electrocatalysts.
