Moiré superlattices, arising from the periodic Moiré patterns formed by two-dimensional (2D) materials stacked with a slight lattice mismatch, have attracted significant attention due to their unique electronic and optical performances. This review provides an overview of recent advances in Moiré superlattices, highlighting their formation mechanisms, structural characteristics, and emergent phenomena. First, we discuss the theoretical basis and experimental techniques employed in fabricating Moiré superlattices. Then we outline various characterization methods that enable the investigation of the structural and electronic performance of Moiré superlattices at the atomic scale. Afterward, we review the diverse range of emergent phenomena exhibited in Moiré superlattices. These phenomena include the appearance of electronic band engineering, unconventional superconductivity, and topologically nontrivial state. We explore how these phenomena arise from the interplay between the original electronic properties of the constituent materials and the Moiré pattern-induced modifications. Furthermore, we examine the potential applications of Moiré superlattices in fields such as electronics, optoelectronics, and quantum technologies. Finally, we summarize the challenges and directions in Moiré superlattice research, which include exploring more complex Moiré patterns, understanding the role of twist angle and strain engineering, and developing theoretical frameworks to describe the behaviors of Moiré systems. This review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the recent progress in Moiré superlattices, shedding light on their formation, performance, and potential applications. The insights gained from this research are expected to pave the way for the design and development of next-generation functional Moiré superlattices.

The cationic surface charge critically influences the biological functions and therapeutic outcomes of the cancer nanomedicines. However, the basic correlation between the cationic group categories and their therapeutic efficacy has not been elucidated. In this study, cationic polymeric nanoparticles with amino groups (primary, tertiary, and quaternary amines) as the single variable were leveraged to investigate the various effects of amino species for enhanced antitumor chemotherapy. The nanoparticles were constructed from a series of triblock polymers with varying cationic repeating units at the hydrophilic-hydrophobic interface. Our results suggested that quaternary ammonium outperforms its primary and tertiary counterparts in destroying mitochondrial membranes to induce apoptosis, penetrating deep inside the tumor tissue, and damaging tumor vasculatures. As a result, we were able to effectively inhibit tumor growth in mice by a quaternary ammonium conjugate without causing significant toxicity. Our work demonstrated that the chemical structures played vital roles in regulating their biological functions and provided valuable information for designing cationic drug delivery systems.

The immunosuppressive nature of the tumor microenvironment (TME) contributes to radioresistance, thereby impairing the effectiveness of radiotherapy as a therapeutic intervention. Activation through the stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway shows potential in modulating immunogenicity. However, the therapeutic efficacy of STING agonists might be restricted by off-target effects and potential cytotoxicity. In this work, nanoexosomes (EXOs) loaded within porous microneedles were employed for precise delivery of the STING agonist MSA-2 (MEM) to the tumor site. Leveraging the enhanced tumor penetration enabled by microneedles, EXOs can be continually released and accumulate within deep residual tumors. Once internalized, these EXOs release the encapsulated MSA-2, facilitating the activation of the STING pathway upon exposure to ultrahigh dose-rate (FLASH) irradiation. This strategy elevates the type I interferon level, promotes dendric cell maturation, and modulates the immunosuppressive TME, showing efficient antitumor efficacy in both primary/metastatic tumors. Furthermore, the induction of a potent immune response effectively prevented tumor recurrence. The combination of EXO-loaded microneedles with FLASH radiotherapy resulted in minimal systemic side effects, attributed to precise drug delivery and radioprotection conferred by FLASH. Altogether, the strategic design of EXO-loaded microneedles holds promise for enhancing MSA-2 delivery, thereby mitigating the radioresistant tumor microenvironment through STING cascade activation-mediated immunotherapy, consequently optimizing the outcomes of FLASH radiotherapy.

In the process of tumor metastasis, tumor cells can acquire invasion by excessive uptake of nutrients and energy and interact with the host microenvironment to shape a premetastatic niche (PMN) that facilitates their colonization and progression in the distal sites. Pyruvate is an essential nutrient that engages in both energy metabolism and remodeling of the extracellular matrix (ECM) in the lungs for PMN formation, thus providing a target for tumor metastasis treatment. There is a paucity of strategies focusing on PMN prevention, which is key to metastasis inhibition. Here, we design a bioresponsive nanoparticle (HP/GU) based on a disulfide-cross-linked hyperbranched polyethylenimine (D-PEI) core and a hyaluronic acid (HA) shell with a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-sensitive cross-linker between them to encapsulate glucose oxidase (GOX) and a mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) inhibitor via electrostatic interaction, which reinforces starvation therapy and reduces PMN formation in the lungs via inhibiting pyruvate metabolism. In tumor cells, GOX and MPC inhibitors can be rapidly released and synergistically reduce the energy supply of tumor cells by consuming glucose and inhibiting pyruvate uptake to decrease tumor cell invasion. MPC inhibitors can also reduce ECM remodeling by blocking cellular pyruvate metabolism to prevent PMN formation. Consequently, HP/GU achieves an efficient inhibition of both primary and metastatic tumors and provides an innovative strategy for the treatment of tumor metastases.

Advancements in radiative cooling technology have shown significant progress in recent years. However, the limited mechanical properties of most radiative coolers greatly hinder their practical applications, particularly in the context of human cooling fabrics. In this study, we present the fabrication of facile and stretchable radiative coolers with exceptional cooling performance by utilizing the design of porous radiative coolers as guidelines for developing promising elastomer coolers. Subsequently, we employ a simple electrospinning method to fabricate these coolers, resulting in impressive solar reflectivity (∼96.1%) and infrared emissivity (over 95%). During the summer, these coolers demonstrate a maximum temperature drop of ∼9.6 °C. Additionally, the developed coolers exhibit superior hydrophobicity and mechanical properties, with a high strain capacity exceeding 700% and a stress tolerance of over 30 MPa, highlighting their potential for application in automobile textiles and cooling fabrics. Furthermore, we evaluate the radiative cooling performance of stretchable coolers using global-scale modeling, revealing their significant cooling potential across various regions worldwide.

PbS quantum dots (QDs) are promising for short-wave infrared (SWIR) photodetection and imaging. Solid-state ligand exchange (SSLE) is a low-fabrication-threshold QD solid fabrication method. However, QD treatment by SSLE remains challenging in seeking refined surface passivation to achieve the desired device performance. This work investigates using NaAc in the ligand exchange process to enhance the film morphology and electronic coupling configuration of QD solids. By implementing various film and photodetector device characterization studies, we confirm that adding NaAc with a prominent adding ratio of 20 wt % NaAc with tetrabutylammonium iodide (TBAI) in the SSLE leads to an improved film morphology, reduced surface roughness, and decreased trap states in the QD solid films. Moreover, compared to the devices without NaAc treatment, those fabricated with NaAc-treated QD solids exhibit an enhanced performance, including lower dark current density (<100 nA/cm 2 ), faster response speed, higher responsivity, detectivity, and external quantum efficiency (EQE reaching 25%). The discoveries can be insightful in developing efficient, low-cost, and low-fabrication-threshold QD SWIR detection and imager applications.

As one of the least energy-efficient components in buildings, transparent building envelopes are responsible for approximately 60% of the total energy losses. Although controlling solar transmittance through electrochromic modulation is an effective method for temperature management in these structures, a dynamic control strategy for solar light on curved transparent building envelopes is still lacking. In this study, we introduce a dual-mode flexible electrochromic device based on reversible silver deposition for curved transparent building envelopes. The device operates by reversibly depositing and dissolving silver on a flexible polyethylene terephthalate-indium tin oxide (PET-ITO) substrate, controlled through the application and removal of pulsed voltage. This mechanism enables rapid switching between radiative cooling and solar heating modes, leading to modulation of solar reflectance from 89.1% to 15.7% and solar transmittance from 0.02% to 72.9%. Under approximately 700 W/m 2 of solar irradiance, the device achieves an average temperature reduction of 1.6 °C (with a maximum reduction of 4.3 °C) compared to ambient temperature in radiative cooling mode. In solar heating mode, the device achieves an average temperature increase of 17.1 °C (with a maximum increment of 23.7 °C) compared to ambient temperature. Simulation results show that the dual-mode flexible electrochromic device could offer all-season thermal regulation for curved transparent building envelopes and achieve a maximum of over 50% annual HVAC energy savings.

All-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) using sulfide electrolytes and high-capacity alloy-type anodes have attracted sizable interest due to their potential excellent safety and high energy density. Encapsulating insulating red phosphorus (P) inside nanopores of a carbon matrix can adequately activate its electrochemical alloying reaction with lithium. Therefore, the porosity of the carbon matrix plays a crucial role in the electrochemical performance of the resulting red P/carbon composites. Here, we use zeolite-templated carbon (ZTC) with monodisperse micropores and mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) with uniform mesopores as the model hosts of red P. Our results reveal that micropores enable more effective pore utilization for the red P loading, and the P@ZTC material can achieve a record-high content (65.0 wt %) of red P confined within pores. When used as an anode of ASSLIBs, the P@ZTC electrode delivers an ultrahigh capacity of 1823 mA h g -1 and a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 87.44%. After 400 deep discharge-charge cycles (running over 250 days) at 0.2 A g -1 , the P@ZTC electrode still holds a reversible capacity of 1260 mA h g -1 (99.92% capacity retention per cycle). Moreover, a P@ZTC||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cell can deliver a reversible areal capacity of over 3 mA h cm -2 at 0.1C after 100 cycles.

The practical applications of bifunctional ruthenium-based electrocatalysts with two active sites of Ru nanoparticles covered with RuO 2 skins are limited. One reason is the presence of multiple equally distributed facets, some of which are inactive. In contrast, ruthenium nanorods with a high aspect ratio have multiple unequally distributed facets containing the dominance of active faces for efficient electrocatalysis. However, the synthesis of ruthenium nanorods has not been achieved due to difficulties in controlling the growth. Additionally, it is known that the adsorption capacity of intermediates can be impacted by the surface of the catalyst. Inspired by these backgrounds, the surface-modified (SM) ruthenium nanorods having a dominant active facet of hcp (100) through chemisorbed oxygen and OH groups (SMRu-NRs@NF) are rationally synthesized through the surfactant coordination method. SMRu-NRs@NF exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution in acid and alkaline solutions with an ultralow overpotential of 215 and 185 mV reaching 1000 mA cm -2 , respectively. Moreover, it has also shown brilliant oxygen evolution electrocatalysis in alkaline solution with a low potential of 1.58 V to reach 1000 mA cm -2 . It also exhibits high durability over 143 h for the evolution of oxygen and hydrogen at 1000 mA cm -2 . Density functional theory studies confirmed that surface modification of a ruthenium nanorod with chemisorbed oxygen and OH groups can optimize the reaction energy barriers of hydrogen and oxygen intermediates. The surface-modified ruthenium nanorod strategy paves a path to develop the practical water splitting electrocatalyst.

Despite the remarkable progress of perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the substantial inherent defects within perovskites restrict the achievement of higher efficiency and better long-term stability. Herein, we introduced a novel multifunctional imidazole analogue, namely, 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (BzMIMBr), into perovskite precursors to reduce bulk defects and inhibit ion migration in inverted PSCs. The electron-rich environment of -N- in the BzMIMBr structure, which is attributed to the electron-rich adjacent benzene ring-conjugated structure, effectively passivates the uncoordinated Pb 2+ cations. Moreover, the interaction between the BzMIMBr additive and perovskite can effectively hinder the deprotonation of formamidinium iodide/methylammonium iodide (FAI/MAI), extending the crystallization time and improving the quality of the perovskite precursors and films. This interaction also effectively inhibits ion migration to subsequent deposited films, leading to a noteworthy decrease in trap states. Various characterization studies show that the BzMIMBr-doped films exhibit superior film morphology and surface uniformity and reduced nonradiative carrier recombination, consequently enhancing crystallinity by reducing bulk/surface defects. The PSCs fabricated on the BzMIMBr-doped perovskite thin film exhibit a power conversion efficiency of 23.37%, surpassing that of the pristine perovskite device (20.71%). Additionally, the added BzMIMBr substantially increased the hydrophobicity of perovskite, as unencapsulated devices still retained 93% of the initial efficiency after 1800 h of exposure to air (45% relative humidity).

Harvesting wind energy from the environment and integrating it with the internet of things and artificial intelligence to enable intelligent ocean environment monitoring are effective approach. There are some challenges that limit the performance of wind energy harvesters, such as the larger start-up torque and the narrow operational wind speed range. To address these issues, this paper proposes a wind energy harvesting system with a self-regulation strategy based on piezoelectric and electromagnetic effects to achieve state monitoring for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). The proposed energy harvesting system comprises eight rotation units with centrifugal adaptation and four piezoelectric units with a magnetic coupling mechanism, which can further reduce the start-up torque and expand the wind speed range. The dynamic model of the energy harvester with the centrifugal effect is explored, and the corresponding structural parameters are analyzed. The simulation and experimental results show that it can obtain a maximum average power of 23.25 mW at a wind speed of 8 m/s. Furthermore, three different magnet configurations are investigated, and the optimal configuration can effectively decrease the resistance torque by 91.25% compared with the traditional mode. A prototype is manufactured, and the test result shows that it can charge a 2200 μF supercapacitor to 6.2 V within 120 s, which indicates that it has a great potential to achieve the self-powered low-power sensors. Finally, a deep learning algorithm is applied to detect the stability of the operation, and the average accuracy reached 95.33%, which validates the feasibility of the state monitoring of USVs.

Nanocarriers have been researched comprehensively for the development of novel boron-containing agents in boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). We designed and synthesized a multifunctional mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN)-based boron-containing agent. The latter was coated with a lipid bilayer (LB) and decorated with SP94 peptide (SFSIIHTPILPL) on the surface as SP94-LB@BA-MSN. The latter incorporated boric acid (BA) into hydrophobic mesopores, coated with an LB, and modified with SP94 peptide on the LB. SP94-LB@BA-MSN enhanced nano interface tumor-targeting ability but also prevented the premature release of drugs, which is crucial for BNCT because adequate boron content in tumor sites is required. SP94-LB@BA-MSN showed excellent efficacy in the BNCT treatment of HepG-2 cells. In animal studies with tumor-bearing mice, SP94-LB@BA-MSN exhibited a satisfactory accumulation at the tumor site. The boron content reached 40.18 ± 5.41 ppm in the tumor site 4 h after injection, which was 8.12 and 15.51 times higher than those in mice treated with boronated phenylalanine and those treated with BA. For boron, the tumor-to-normal tissue ratio was 4.41 ± 1.13 and the tumor-to-blood ratio was 5.92 ± 0.45. These results indicated that nanoparticles delivered boron to the tumor site effectively while minimizing accumulation in normal tissues. In conclusion, this composite (SP94-LB@BA-MSN) shows great promise as a boron-containing delivery agent for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma using BNCT. These findings highlight the potential of MSNs in the field of BNCT.

A rechargeable aqueous hybrid ion alkaline battery, using a proton and a potassium ion as charge carriers for the anode and cathode, respectively, is proposed in this study by using well-developed potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate as the cathode material and mesoporous carbon sheets as the anode material, respectively. The constructed battery operates in a concentrated KOH solution, in which the energy storage mechanism for potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate involves the redox reaction of Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ associated with potassium ion insertion/extraction and the redox reaction of Ni(OH) 2 /NiOOH. The mechanism for the carbon anode is electrochemical hydrogen storage. The cathode made of potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate exhibits both an ultrahigh capacity of 232.7 mAh g -1 under 100 mA g -1 and a consistent performance of 214 mAh g -1 at 2000 mA g -1 (with a capacity retention of 92.8% after 200 cycles). The mesoporous carbon sheet anode exhibits a capacity of 87.6 mAh·g -1 at 100 mA g -1 with a good rate and cyclic performance. The full cell provides an operational voltage of 1.55 V, a capacity of 93.6 mAh g -1 at 100 mA g -1 , and 82.4% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2000 mA g -1 along with a low self-discharge rate. The investigation and discussion about the energy storage mechanisms for both electrode materials are also provided.

Inert atmosphere is normally necessary for fabrication of solid composite electrolytes (SCEs) as a crucial part of solid-state Li-metal batteries in order to avoid undesirable reactions induced by ambient moisture. Herein, we developed an air-processable technique to fabricate SCEs by employing LiCF 3 SO 3 (LiOTf) as the Li salt, which was combined with Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) as the fast Li-conductor and polyvinylidene difluoroethylene/polyvinyl acetate (PVDF/PVAC) as the polymer matrix. With the assistance of trace H 2 O dissolved in electrolyte solution, the room-temperature Li + conductivity of the obtained aSCE reached as high as 5.09 × 10 -4 S cm -1 , which was over 3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the one (iSCE, 1.93 × 10 -7 S cm -1 ) cast by the electrolyte solution prepared in an inert atmosphere. The theoretical calculation results reveal that the oxygen atom of H 2 O exhibits a high propensity to interact with the Li atom in LiOTf (Li···O), thereby establishing a hydrogen bond with the oxygen atom (H···O) in N , N -dimethylformamide (solvent). Such interactions promoted the dissociation of LiOTf and led to the formation of uniform Li + transportation channels. Simultaneously, the composition distribution was also altered, resulting in a smoother surface of aSCE and lowered crystallinity of PVDF. On this basis, the LiOTf/LLZTO/PVDF/PVAC solution at 60 °C was directly coated onto the surface of the LiFePO 4 (LFP) cathode to fabricate the LFP-aSCE film after drying in an oven. The assembled LFP-aSCE/Li battery wetted by trace sulfolane exhibited an initial Coulombic efficiency of 94.7% and a capacity retention rate of up to 96% at 0.2 C (137 mAh g -1 ) after 180 cycles and a high capacity of 143.7 mAh g -1 at 0.5 C (150 cycles). Overall, this work could pave the way for the facile fabrication of solid electrolytes.

Functional materials that can quickly absorb and degrade mustard gas are essential for chemical warfare emergency response kits. In this study, a fiber membrane with excellent adsorption and catalytic degradation activity was developed by solution blow spinning polystyrene (PS)/polyurethane (PU) and hydrothermal in situ growth of a zirconium-based MOF (MOF-808). The mechanical properties of the PS/PU fibers were improved by adding a trimethylolpropane tris (2-methyl-1-aziridine propionate) (TTMA) cross-linking agent. Moreover, the C═O bonds in TTMA provided abundant growth sites for MOF-808 in the hydrothermal process, thereby greatly increasing the loading capacity. The fiber surface was completely covered with the MOF-808 particles within 24 h. The PS/PU/TTMA/MOF-808 fiber membrane was used for the catalytic degradation of 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES). The degradation efficiency reached 97.7% after 72 h, indicating its great application potential in emergency wiping cloths for mustard gas adsorption and degradation.

Recently, various transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs)/Ga 2 O 3 heterostructures have emerged as excellent candidates for the development of broadband photodetection, exhibiting various merits such as broadband optical absorption, efficient interlayer carrier transfer, a relatively simple fabrication process, and potential for flexibility. In this work, vertically stacked MoSe 2 /Ga 2 O 3 , WS 2 /Ga 2 O 3 , and WSe 2 /Ga 2 O 3 heterostructures were experimentally synthesized, all exhibiting broadband light absorption, spanning at least from 200 to 800 nm. The absorption coefficients of these TMDs/Ga 2 O 3 heterostructures are significantly improved compared to those of individual Ga 2 O 3 films. The superior performance can be attributed to the type-I band alignment and efficient interlayer carrier transfer, which result from various band offsets along with the different doping conditions of the TMD layers, leading to distinct photoluminescence (PL) emission properties. Through a detailed analysis of the excitation-power-dependent PL spectra, we offer an in-depth discussion of the interlayer carrier transfer mechanism in the TMDs/Ga 2 O 3 heterostructures. Regarding interlayer coupling effects, the shift of the E F of TMD layers plays a crucial role in modulating their trion emission properties. These findings suggest that these three TMDs/Ga 2 O 3 heterostructures have great potential in broadband photodetection, and our in-depth physical mechanism analysis lays a solid foundation for a new device design.

Recently, zinc (Zn) and its alloys have demonstrated great potential as guided bone regeneration (GBR) membranes to treat the problems of insufficient alveolar bone volume and long-term osseointegration instability during dental implantology. However, bone regeneration is a complex process consisting of osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and antibacterial function. For now, the in vivo osteogenic performance and antibacterial activity of pure Zn are inadequate, and thus fabricating a platform to endow Zn membranes with multifunctions may be essential to address these issues. In this study, various bimetallic magnesium/copper metal-organic framework (Mg/Cu-MOF) coatings were fabricated and immobilized on pure Zn. The results indicated that the degradation rate and water stability of Mg/Cu-MOF coatings could be regulated by controlling the feeding ratio of Cu 2+ . As the coating and Zn substrate degraded, an alkaline microenvironment enriched with Zn 2+ , Mg 2+ , and Cu 2+ was generated. It significantly improved calcium phosphate deposition, differentiation of osteoblasts, and vascularization of endothelial cells in the extracts. Among them, Mg/Cu1 showed the best comprehensive performance. The superior antibacterial activity of Mg/Cu1 was demonstrated in vitro and in vivo, which indicated significantly enhanced bacteriostatic activity against Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative Escherichia coli as compared to that of the bare sample. Bimetallic Mg/Cu-MOF coating could properly coordinate the multifunction on a Zn membrane and could be a promising platform for promoting its bone regeneration, which could pave the way for Zn-based materials to be used as barrier membranes in oral clinical trials.

Accurate prediction of the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is challenging. The therapy is different from other radiotherapy; the dynamic distribution of boron-containing compounds in tumor cells affects the therapeutic outcome considerably and hampers accurate measurement of the neutron-absorbed dose. Herein, we used boron-containing metal-organic framework nanoparticles (BMOFs) with high boron content to target U87-MG cells and maintain the concentration of the 10 B isotope in cells. The content of boron in the cells could maintain 90% (60 ppm) within 20 min compared with that at the beginning; therefore, the accurate RBE of BNCT can be acquired. The effects of BNCT upon cells after neutron irradiation were observed, and the neutron-absorbed dose was obtained by Monte Carlo simulations. The RBE of BMOFs was 6.78, which was 4.1-fold higher than that of a small-molecule boron-containing agent (boric acid). The energy spectrum of various particles was analyzed by Monte Carlo simulations, and the RBE was verified theoretically. Our results suggested that the use of nanoparticle-based boron carriers in BNCT may have many advantages and that maintaining a stable boron distribution within cells may significantly improve the efficiency of BNCT.

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) offer significant advantages in electrophysiological applications, primarily due to their ability to facilitate ionic-to-electronic conversion and establish a direct interface with the surrounding aqueous environments by using organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors. This study employs a side-chain free n-type conducting polymer, poly(benzodifurandione) (PBFDO), as the channel material in OECTs to scrutinize the interplay between various ion concentrations in electrolytes and the conjugated polymer and to assess their subsequent impact on device performance. Our findings reveal that PBFDO-based OECTs demonstrate superior transfer characteristics, attributed to their high conductivity and remarkable stability in aqueous solutions. Interestingly, the ion concentration does not alter the electronic band structure of PBFDO during the doping process, but a high-salt-concentration electrolyte could accelerate the electrochemical process compared to its counterparts. Furthermore, the diluted solution significantly enhances the surface roughness and decreases the crystalline coherence length of the film compared with concentrated solutions. A quantitative analysis utilizing an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance discloses that the electrolyte ions penetrate the PBFDO film, inducing the absorption of a fraction of water molecules, which is pronounced in diluted solutions and negligible in their concentrated counterparts. This notable swelling of the polymer in diluted solutions potentially hampers the transport of charge carriers, consequently diminishing the OECT performance. This research elucidates a direct correlation between microstructure alterations and device performance during operation, paving the way for the optimization of ionic and electronic conductivity in polymers to foster the development of high-performance organic electronic devices.

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) show great potential in large-scale energy storage systems, due to Mg 2+ with high polarity leading to strong interactions within the cathode lattice, and the limited discovery of functional cathode materials with rapid kinetics of Mg 2+ diffusion and desirable cyclability retards their development. Herein, we innovatively report the confined synthesis of VS 2 /polyaniline (VS 2 /PANI) hybrid nanosheets. The VS 2 /PANI hybrids with expanded interlayer spacing are successfully prepared through the exfoliation of VS 2 and in situ polymerization between VS 2 nanosheets and aniline. The intercalated PANI increases the interlayer spacing of VS 2 from 0.57 to 0.95 nm and improves its electronic conductivity, leading to rapid Mg-ion diffusivity of 10 -10 -10 -12 cm 2 s -1 . Besides, the PANI sandwiched between layers of VS 2 is conducive to maintaining the structural integrity of electrode materials. Benefiting from the above advantages, the VS 2 /PANI-1 hybrids present remarkable performance for Mg 2+ storage, showing high reversible discharge capacity (245 mA h g -1 at 100 mA g -1 ) and impressive long lifespan (91 mA h g -1 after 2000 cycles at 500 mA g -1 ). This work provides new perspectives for designing high-performance cathode materials based on layered materials for RMBs.

Optical tweezers use the momentum of photons to capture and manipulate particles in a noncontact way. Although related techniques have been widely used in biology and materials, research on viruses is still relatively limited. It is hard to optically trap viruses because trap stiffness is rather low and the size of viruses is too small. Here, we used an optical tweezers system coupled with a laser confocal fluorescence imaging system, which allows individual viruses to be imaged and trapped in real time and analyzed using multiple parameters in the culture medium. We show that a single virus tagged by quantum dots (QDs) can increase the real part of polarizability, further increasing gradient force and trap stiffness. With this method, we not only can trap and manipulate viruses in real time but also can analyze their interactions with other targets.

Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), a prominent conducting polymer, holds significance in both industry and academia. However, prevailing fabrication techniques struggle to build spanning features of PEDOT:PSS with both high electrical conductivity and fine resolution due to layerwise assembly in the xy plane. Here, we report an "omnidirectional printing and secondary doping" strategy to construct spanning, filamentary and out-of-plane 3D PEDOT:PSS with high conductivity. The pristine PEDOT:PSS suspension is homogeneously concentrated to form a printable ink with high solids (∼15 wt %) consisting of entangled PEDOT:PSS nanofibrils. Such ink shows a high storage modulus G ' (43531 Pa) and a high yield stress τ y (4325 Pa), thereby enabling omnidirectional printing. Secondary doping with sulfuric acid or other polar solvents is used to induce a synergetic process of PSS loss, conformational change, phase separation, and crystallinity enhancement in the printed structures, resulting in a remarkable enhancement of conductivity in dehydrated (65,378 S/m) and swollen (7190 S/m) states. As a proof-of-concept, 2D grids with a feature size of 15 μm and 3D overhanging arches are fabricated for high-performance transparent glass heaters and 3D interconnection, respectively. This work promises great potential for the development of advanced flexible electronics, wearable devices, and bioelectronics.

Radiative cooling is a promising technology that offers benefits such as reducing cooling energy demand, mitigating climate change impacts, and contributing to sustainable development. However, previous radiative cooling technologies are unable to manage humidity, which is crucial and energy-intensive in many applications. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the capabilities of radiative coolers to include humidity control. Here, we demonstrate a fiber-encapsulated gel structure (FEGS) to realize simultaneous radiative cooling and humidity control. By employing a phase equilibrium-based strategy, the FEGS can control relative humidity to any value between 30 and 80%. The changes in temperature, thermal conductivity, and water content during the regeneration process of FEGS were studied. Field tests demonstrated that the FEGS can achieve 5 °C subambient temperature reduction under direct sunlight while maintaining the relative humidity at a controlled level of 58 ± 3% for a continuous period of 3 days. This work can potentially pave the way for the comanagement of temperature and humidity in a passive, low-cost, and scalable way.

Aerogel fiber has emerged recently for incorporation in personal thermal management textiles due to its flexibility, scalability, and ultrahigh porosity, which allows the body to keep warm via thermal isolation without energy consumption. However, the functionalization and intellectualization of cellulose-based aerogel fibers have not yet been fully developed. Herein, we propose a biomimicking design inspired by polar bear and Siamese cat hair that combines porous cellulose aerogel fiber (CAF) with reversible thermochromic microcapsules to mimic biological sensory and adaptive thermoregulation functions. The produced CAF has a controllable pore structure, a large specific surface area (230 m 2 /g), and excellent mechanical strength (∼15 MPa). Low-temperature darkening microcapsules have been incorporated into the robust CAF to spontaneously adjust color by perceiving the ambient temperature. The functional aerogel fiber fabric achieves high thermal insulation and photothermal modulation simultaneously at temperatures below 18 °C. The temperature of the thermochromic fabric was higher by 6 °C than that of the sample without the microcapsules at a light intensity of 0.2 W/cm 2 . In addition, the aerogel fibers mixed with two types of thermochromic microcapsules exhibit three color switches with fast response, a color-control precision of 0.2 °C, and good cycling performance. This smart aerogel fibers hold great promise for self-adaptive thermal management, temperature indication, information transfer, and anticounterfeiting in textiles.

With the popularization of the Internet of Things, the application of chemical sensors has become more and more extensive. However, it is difficult for a single functional sensor to meet multiple needs at the same time. For the next generation of chemical sensors, in addition to rapid qualitative and quantitative detection, it is also necessary to solve the problem of a distributed sensor power supply. Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) are two emerging technologies that can be used for chemical testing. The combination of TENG and SERS technology is proposed to be an attractive research strategy to implement qualitative and quantitative analysis, as well as self-powered detection in one device. Herein, the Ag nanoparticle (NP)@polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) plasmonic cavity is demonstrated, which can be exploited not only as a SERS substrate for qualitative analysis of the target molecules but also as a TENG based self-powered chemical sensor for rapid quantitative analysis. More importantly, the as-designed plasmonic cavity enables prolonged triboelectric field generated by the phenomena of triboelectricity, which in turn enhances the "hot spot" intensities from Ag NPs in the cavity and boosts the SERS signals. In this way, the device can have good feasibility and versatility for chemical detection. Specifically, the measurement of the concentration of many analytes can be successfully realized, including ions and small molecules. The results verify that the proposed sensor system has the potential for self-powered chemical sensors for environmental monitoring and analytical chemistry.

The development of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) still faces a huge challenge due to poor cycling stability and slow kinetics of the cathode material. In this work, we report an advanced cathode of Ti 4+ /Zr 4+ as dual-supporting sites in Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 with an expanded crystal structure, exceptional conductivity, and superior structural stability for AZIBs, which exhibits fast Zn 2+ diffusion and excellent performance. The results of AZIBs afford remarkably high cycling stability (91.2% retention rate over 4000 cycles) and exceptional energy density (191.3 W h kg -1 ), outperforming most Na + superionic conductor (NASICON)-type cathodes. Furthermore, different in/ex situ characterization techniques and theoretical studies reveal the reversible storage mechanism of Zn 2+ in an optimal Na 2.9 V 1.9 Ti 0.05 Zr 0.05 (PO 4 ) 3 (NVTZP) cathode and demonstrate that Na + defects together with Ti 4+ /Zr 4+ sites can intrinsically contribute to the high electrical conductivity and low Na + /Zn 2+ diffusion energy barrier of NVTZP. Moreover, the flexible soft-packaged batteries further demonstrate a superior capacity retention rate of 83.2% after 2000 cycles from the perspective of practicality.

The development of probes with sensitive and prompt detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is of great importance for protecting human health and public security. Herein, we successfully prepared a series of bimetallic lanthanide metal-organic framework (Eu/Zr-UiO-66) by incorporating Eu 3+ for fluorescence sensing of VOCs (especially styrene and cyclohexanone) using a one-pot method. Based on the multiple fluorescence signal responses of Eu/Zr-UiO-66 toward styrene and cyclohexanone, a ratiometric fluorescence probe using ( I 617 / I 320 ) and ( I 617 / I 330 ) as output signals was developed to recognize styrene and cyclohexanone, respectively. Benefitting from the multiple fluorescence response, the limits of detection (LODs) of Eu/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) for styrene and cyclohexanone were 1.5 and 2.5 ppm, respectively. These are among the lowest reported levels for MOF-based sensors, and this is the first known material for fluorescence sensing of cyclohexanone. Fluorescence quenching by styrene was mainly owing to the large electronegativity of styrene and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). However, FRET was accounted for fluorescence quenching by cyclohexanone. Moreover, Eu/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) exhibited good anti-interference ability and recycling performance for styrene and cyclohexanone. More importantly, the visual recognition of styrene and EB vapor can be directly realized with the naked eyes using Eu/Zr-UiO-66 (1:9) test strips. This strategy provides a sensitive, selective, and reliable method for the visual sensing of styrene and cyclohexanone.

Two-dimensional materials (2DMs) that are stacked vertically with a certain twist angle provide new degrees of freedom for designing novel physical properties. Twist-related properties of homogeneous bilayer and heterogeneous bilayer 2DMs, such as excitons and phonons, have been described in many pioneering works. However, twist-related properties of homogeneous trilayer 2DMs have been rarely reported. In this work, trilayer MoS 2 with the twisted angle of 12° by optimized vapor deposition rather than the conventional mechanical stacking method was successfully fabricated. The inversion symmetry of trilayer MoS 2 is changed by twist. Phonons and excitons produced by twist have an enormous influence on the interlayer interaction of trilayer MoS 2 , making trilayer MoS 2 appear to have exotic optical properties. Compared with monolayer MoS 2 , the phonon vibration and photoluminescence intensity of trilayer MoS 2 with one-interlayer-twisted are significantly improved, and the second harmonic generation response in the non-twist region of trilayer MoS 2 is ∼3 times that of monolayer MoS 2 . In addition, interlayer coupling, inversion symmetry, and exciton behavior of the twist region show regional differences. This work provides a new way for designing twist and exploring the influence of twist on the structures of 2DMs with few layers.

Sodium-sulfur batteries operating at ambient temperature are being extensively studied because of the high theoretical capacity and abundant resources, yet the long-chain polysulfides' shuttle effect causes poor cycling performance of Na-S batteries. We report an annealing/etching method to converse low-cost wheat bran to a 3D honeycomb-like carbon with abundant micropores (WBMC), which is smaller than S 8 molecular size (∼0.7 nm). Thus, the microporous structure could only fill small molecular sulfur (S 2-4 ). The micropores made sulfur a one-step reaction without the shuttle effect due to the formed short-chain polysulfides being insoluble. The WBMC@S exhibits an excellent initial capacity (1413 mAh g -1 ) at 0.2 C, outstanding cycling performance (822 mAh g -1 after 100 cycles at 0.2 C), and high rate performance (483 mAh g -1 at 3.0 C). The electrochemical performance proves that the steric confinement of micropores effectively terminates the shuttle effect.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is one of the major antioxidants in vivo and is expected to play critical roles on the defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated damages, such as ionizing radiation damages. Herein, inspired by the function and structure of natural SODs and cerium oxide nanozymes, two monovalent cerium-based metal organic frameworks (Ce-MOFs), Ce III BTC and Ce IV BTC, were designed for superoxide radical (O 2 •- ) elimination and ionizing radiation protection. These two Ce-MOFs selectively scavenge O 2 •- and are excellent SOD mimics. Like natural SODs and cerium oxide nanozymes, the SOD-like catalytic mechanism of Ce-MOFs involves a cycle between Ce(IV) and Ce(III). Furthermore, by constructing monovalent Ce-MOFs, we found that high-valent Ce IV BTC are more effective SOD-like nanozymes compared to Ce III BTC. With smaller size, better monodispersity, and more effective SOD-like activity, Ce IV BTC nanozymes were further applied for ionizing radiation protection. Both in vitro and in vivo results demonstrated that Ce IV BTC nanozymes could efficiently scavenge ROS, prevent cells from γ-ray radiation-induced cell viability decrease and DNA damages, and improve the survival rate of irradiated mice by recovering the bone marrow DNA damage and alleviating oxidative stress of tissues. The protective effect and good biocompatibility of Ce IV BTC nanozymes will enable the development of Ce-MOFs-based radioprotectants and facilitate treatment of other ROS-related diseases.

The state-of-the-art poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are gaining importance for a variety of biological applications due to their mixed electronic and ionic conductivities featuring ion-to-electron conversion. A low operation voltage without sacrificing device performance is desired to realize long-term monitoring of biological activities. In the present work, oxoammonium salts with two different counterions (TEMPO + X - , where TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxoammonium; X = Br - and TFSI - ) are employed as secondary dopants to modulate the device performance. Both oxoammonium salts feature a distinct dopant concentration-dependent doping effect, allowing precise control in improving the performance of OECTs. A zero-gate bias, corresponding to the maximum transconductance, and a low threshold voltage are realized by optimizing the dopant concentrations. In addition, TEMPO + TFSI - dopant exerts great capability in modulating the work function and in morphology reconstruction of PEDOT:PSS, ensuring a well-matched work function at the gold electrode-channel material interface and condensed microstructure stacking with an edge-on orientation in the doped PEDOT:PSS films. The synergistic effect of TEMPO and the TFSI - counterion endows the device with superior performance to its counterparts due to the resultant higher μ C * figure, benefiting from the efficient injection/extraction of holes at the interface and enhanced intra- and inter-chain carrier transport. The excellent device performance makes the OECT a promising neuromorphic device to mimic basic brain functions.

The regulation of the coordination environment of the central metal atom is considered as an alternative way to enhance the performance of single-atom catalysts (SACs). Herein, we design an electrocatalyst with active sites of isolated Co atoms coordinated with four sulfur atoms supported on N-doped carbon frameworks (Co 1 -S 4 /NC), confirmed by high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscope (HADDF-STEM) and synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) spectroscopy. The Co 1 -S 4 /NC possesses higher hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity than other Co species and exceptional stability, which exhibits a small Tafel slope of 60 mV dec -1 and a low overpotential of 114 mV at 10 mA cm -2 during the HER in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution. Furthermore, through in situ X-ray absorption spectrum tests and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal the catalytic mechanism of Co 1 -S 4 moieties and find that the increasing number of sulfur atoms in the Co coordination environment leads to a substantial reduction of the theoretical HER overpotential. This work may point a new direction for the synthesis, performance regulation, and practical application of single-metal-atom catalysts.

Polymer-based dielectrics with high energy storage density are attracting increasing attention due to their wide applications in pulsed-discharge and power conditioning electronic fields. Despite some numerical simulation about effects of horizontally arranged and vertically arranged fibers on dielectric properties of composites already studied, the influence mechanism of the specific orientation and aspect ratio still remains to be studied. In this work, the effects of orientation angles and aspect ratios of nanofiber fillers on breakdown behavior and dielectric properties of composites are theoretically analyzed by the finite element and phase-field method. The results show that the more inclined the nanofiber fillers is, the higher the nominal breakdown strength is, which benefits from the obstruction of the conductive channels by the nanofibers. However, the dielectric constant shows the opposite law, which is the result of the decreased polarization along the electric field direction of the nanofiber fillers. Besides this, by modulating the distribution of local electric field, a higher aspect ratio of nanofiber fillers helps to achieve a much higher breakdown strength with a slight sacrifice of dielectric constant. The present work provides a comprehensive and quantitative understanding of the orientation and aspect ratio of nanofiber fillers on the dielectric and breakdown properties of composites, providing important guidance on optimizing the energy storage performance.

Poly(heptazine imide) (abbreviated as PHI), a heptazine-based crystalline carbon nitride photocatalyst, has attracted widespread attention in the photocatalytic H 2 evolution benefiting from its high crystallinity. Nevertheless, the optical absorption range of the directly synthesized PHI is generally narrow, which severely hinders the utilization of visible light. Much research aimed to extend the optical absorption range of PHI; however, either the optimization degree was insufficient or the synthesis process was cumbersome. Herein, red PHI (RPHI) for improving the photocatalytic H 2 evolution was facilely synthesized by the one step method. The optimal RPHI sample possesses an obvious new absorption band of the n → π* electron transition and exhibits a significantly enhanced photocatalytic H 2 evolution rate of 169 μmol h -1 (λ > 510 nm) and 46 μmol h -1 (λ > 600 nm), which is about 5 times (λ > 510 nm) and 7.7 times (λ > 600 nm) that of pristine PHI and surpasses most reported RPHIs. This work may promote the development of the PHI photocatalyst for near-infrared photocatalytic H 2 production.

Quantum dots (QDs) have attracted much attention as one of the most promising candidates for next-generation display materials. However, stability is still a big challenge for QDs. Herein, we encapsulated QDs in a thermoplastic polypropylene (PP) matrix by thermal processing technology to prepare a stabler color conversion film for the first time. Thermal processing technology expands the packaging materials of QDs from traditional soluble polymers to thermoplastic polymers such as PP with easy processing and a low cost. We showed that the QDs in the PP film exhibited longer-lasting stability than the traditional PMMA film. After 216 h of blue light accelerated aging test, the QDs maintained more than 90% of the initial performance in the PP film but dropped to less than 25% in the PMMA film. Moreover, the reasons for the improved stability have been further discussed. It was found that the PP-H film not only possessed better barriers to moisture and oxygen, but the absence of ester groups also led to a milder environment around the QDs. The results show that ester groups have stronger electronegativity and easily cause the ligands on the surface of QDs to fall off, which lead to performance degradation.

The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of halogenated solvent spin-coated organic solar cells (OSCs) has been boosted to a high level (>18%) by developing efficient photovoltaic materials and precise morphological control. However, the PCE of OSCs prepared from non-halogenated solvents and with a scalable printing process is far behind, limited by tough morphology manipulation. Herein, we have fabricated ternary OSCs by using layer-by-layer (LBL) blade-coating and a non-halogenated solvent. The ternary OSCs based on the PM6:IT-M(1:0.2)/BTP-eC9 active layer are processed with the hydrocarbon solvent 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene with no need of any additives and post-treatment. The vertical donor/acceptor distribution is optimized by LBL blade-coating within the PM6:IT-M(1:0.2)/BTP-eC9 active layer. The cascade acceptor IT-M blended in PM6 not only attenuates the damage of BTP-eC9 to the PM6 crystallization, leading to a dense nanofiber-like morphology, but also prefers to reside between PM6 and BTP-eC9 to form a cascade energy level alignment for a fast charge-transfer process. Finally, the improved morphology and crystallization lead to a reduced molecular recombination, low energy loss, and high open-circuit voltage. The prepared non-halogenated solvent and LBL blade-coated OSCs achieve a PCE of 17.16%. The work provides an approach to fabricate hydrocarbon solvent-processed high-performance OSCs by employing LBL blade-coating and a ternary strategy.

Electrospun-aligned fibers in ultrathin fineness have previously demonstrated a limited capacity in driving stem cells to differentiate into tendon-like cells. In view of the tendon's mechanoactive nature, endowing such aligned fibrous structure with mechanoactivity to exert in situ mechanical stimulus by itself, namely, without any forces externally applied, is likely to potentiate its efficiency of tenogenic induction. To test this hypothesis, in this study, a shape-memory-capable poly(l-lactide- co -caprolactone) (PLCL) copolymer was electrospun into aligned fibrous form followed by a "stretching-recovery" shape-programming procedure to impart shape memory capability. Thereafter, in the absence of tenogenic supplements, human adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) were cultured on the programmed fibrous substrates for a duration of 7 days, and the effects of constrained recovery resultant stress-stiffening on cell morphology, proliferation, and tenogenic differentiation were examined. The results indicate that the in situ enacted mechanical stimulus due to shape memory effect (SME) did not have adverse influence on cell viability and proliferation, but significantly promoted cellular elongation along the direction of fiber alignment. Moreover, it revealed that tendon-specific protein markers such as tenomodulin (TNMD) and tenascin-C (TNC) and gene expression of scleraxis ( SCX ), TNMD , TNC , and collagen I ( COL I ) were significantly upregulated on the mechanoactive fibrous substrate with higher recovery stress compared to the counterparts. Mechanistically, the Rho/ROCK signaling pathway was identified to be involved in the substrate self-actuation-induced enhancement in tenodifferentiation. Together, these results suggest that constrained shape recovery stress may be employed as an innovative loading modality to regulate the stem cell tenodifferentiation by presenting the fibrous substrate with an aligned tendon-like topographical cue and an additional mechanoactivity. This newly demonstrated paradigm in modulating stem cell tenodifferentiation may improve the efficacy of tendon tissue engineering strategy for tendon healing and regeneration.

Achieving facile control of the wavelength of light emitters is of great significance for many key applications in optoelectronics and photonics, including on-chip interconnection, super-resolution imaging, and optical communication. The Joule heating effect caused by electric current is widely applied in modulating the refractive index of silicon-based waveguides for reconfigurable nanophotonic circuits. Here, by utilizing localized Joule heating in the biased graphene device, we demonstrate electrically controlled wavelength-tunable photoluminescence (PL) from vertical van der Waals heterostructures combined by graphene and two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D-TMDCs). By applying a moderate electric field of 6.5 kV·cm -1 to the graphene substrate, the PL wavelength of 2D-TMDCs exhibits a continuous tuning from 662 to 690 nm, corresponding to a bandgap reduction of 76 meV. The electric control is highly reversible during sweeping the bias back and forth. The temperature dependence of Raman and PL spectroscopy reveals that the current-induced local Joule heating effect plays a leading role in reducing the optical direct bandgap of TMDCs. The bias-dependent optical reflectivity and time-resolved photoluminescence measurements show a consistent reduction of the optical band gap of 2D-TMDCs and increased PL lifetimes with the electric field over the heterostructures. Moreover, we demonstrate the consistent device operation from 2D materials grown by chemical vapor deposition, showing great advantages for the scalability.

The regeneration of bone defects in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) is remarkably impaired by hyperglycemia and over-expressed proinflammatory cytokines, proteinases (such as matrix metalloproteinases, MMPs), etc. In view of the fact that exosomes represent a promising nanomaterial, herein, we reported the excellent capacity of stem cells from apical papilla-derived exosomes (SCAP-Exo) to facilitate angiogenesis and osteogenesis whether in normal or diabetic conditions in vitro . Then, a bioresponsive polyethylene glycol (PEG)/DNA hybrid hydrogel was developed to support a controllable release of SCAP-Exo for diabetic bone defects. This system could be triggered by the elevated pathological cue (MMP-9) in response to the dynamic diabetic microenvironment. It was further confirmed that the administration of the injectable SCAP-Exo-loaded PEG/DNA hybrid hydrogel into the mandibular bone defect of diabetic rats demonstrated a great therapeutic effect on promoting vascularized bone regeneration. In addition, the miRNA sequencing suggested that the mechanism of dual-functional SCAP-Exo might be related to highly expressed miRNA-126-5p and miRNA-150-5p. Consequently, our study provides valuable insights into the design of promising bioresponsive exosome-delivery systems to improve bone regeneration in diabetic patients.

Long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials are promising for applications in various fields including security information, medical diagnostics, and molecular imaging because of their unique optical properties. Previous RTP materials are mainly excited by ultraviolet light, while synthesizing long-lived RTP materials with visible-light-excitation remains a challenge. In particular, long-lived RTP materials that can be excited by green light are rare. Herein, a feasible and concise chemical strategy for constructing hydrogen-bonded frameworks in an aqueous environment is developed to fabricate large-size, green-light-excited, and excitation-dependent long-lived RTP carbon dot crystals (m,p/CDs-ME). The RTP performance of the crystals exhibits strong excitation wavelength dependence, leading to a full range of visible-light tuning from blue to red. Importantly, the maximum excitation wavelength of the RTP crystals is around 500 nm, thus successfully realizing green light excitation. m,p/CDs-ME presents long-lived phosphorescence (130 ms) under 500 nm excitation in aqueous solution, making it highly suitable for dopamine detection. This work not only provides a general guideline for the development of large size long-lived RTP crystals but also extends the operation scope of long-lived RTP materials in the detection of biomarkers by visible light excitation.

Pervaporation (PV) is considered as a robust membrane-based separation technology for liquid mixtures. However, the development of PV membranes is impeded largely by the lack of adequate models capable of reliably predicting the performance of PV membranes. In this study, we collect an experimental data set with a total of 681 data samples including 16 polymers and 6 organic solvents for a wide variety of water/organic mixtures under various operating conditions. Then, two types of machine learning (ML) models are developed for prediction and high-throughput screening of polymer membranes for PV separation. Based on the intrinsic properties of polymer and solvent (water contact angle of polymer and solubility parameter of solvent) as gross descriptors, the first type accurately predicts PV separation performance (total flux and separation factor). The second type is based on the molecular representation of polymer and solvent, giving accuracy comparable to the first type, and applied to screen ∼1 million hypothetical polymers for PV separation of water/ethanol mixtures. With a threshold of 700 for the PV separation index, 20 polymers are shortlisted, with many surpassing experimental samples. Among these, 10 are further identified to be synthesizable in terms of a synthetic complexity score. The ML models developed in this study would facilitate the optimization of operating conditions and accelerate the development of new polymer membranes for high-performance PV separation.

"Ferroelectric/ferromagnetic" multiferroic composites with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) are useful for developing power-efficient magnetic memories. Voltage control of PMA has been demonstrated in bulk multiferroic composites based on ferroelectric single crystals, but they are not compatible for integration. Multiferroic composite thin films are useful for developing integrated devices; however, voltage control of PMA in them has not been achieved yet at room temperature due to their low magnetoelectric (ME) coupling coefficient. Here, we demonstrate such functionality and propose to enhance their ME coupling effect under a strong electric field by taking full advantage of the large dielectric strength of ferroelectric thin films. First, the thickness-dependent breakdown of Pb(Zr 0.384 Ti 0.576 Nb 0.04 )O 3 (PNZT) thin films was studied, and the two-layer (∼200 nm) samples exhibited the highest breakdown strength (3.68 MV/cm) and small surface roughness (<1 nm). Second, we fabricated "PNZT/(Co/Pt) 5 " thin films with strong PMA whose breakdown strength is nearly independent of the top electrode materials. Finally, voltage-induced effective magnetic field ( H eff ) in "PNZT/(Co/Pt) 5 " was studied. It is comparable to that achieved in bulk composites and will induce magnetization switching under strong electric fields. Multiferroic composite thin films with large breakdown strength will provide a useful platform for enabling integrated multiferroic devices.

Much has been learned about the protein coronae and their biological implications within the context of nanomedicine and nanotoxicology. However, no data is available about the protein coronae associated with nanoparticles undergoing spontaneous surface-energy minimization, a common phenomenon during the synthesis and shelf life of nanomaterials. Accordingly, here we employed gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) possessing the three initial states of spiky, midspiky, and spherical shapes and determined their acquisition of human plasma protein coronae with label-free mass spectrometry. The AuNPs collected coronal proteins that were different in abundance, physicochemical parameters, and interactive biological network. The size and structure of the coronal proteins matched the morphology of the AuNPs, where small globular proteins and large fibrillar proteins were enriched on spiky AuNPs, while large proteins were abundant on spherical AuNPs. Furthermore, the AuNPs induced endothelial leakiness to different degrees, which was partially negated by their protein coronae as revealed by confocal fluorescence microscopy, in vitro and ex vivo transwell assays, and signaling pathway assays. This study has filled a knowledge void concerning the dynamic protein corona of nanoparticles possessing an evolving morphology and shed light on their implication for future nanomedicine harnessing the paracellular pathway.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage systems due to the abundance and wide distribution of sodium resources. Various solutions have been successfully applied to revolve the large-ion-size-induced battery issues at the mid-to-low current density range. However, the fast-charging properties of SIBs are still in high demand to accommodate the increasing energy needs at large to grid scales. Herein, a core-shell Co 2 VO 4 /carbon composite anode is designed to tackle the fast-charging problem of SIBs. The synergetic effect from the stable spinel structure of Co 2 VO 4 , the size of the nanospheres, and the carbon shell provide enhanced Na + ion diffusion and electron transfer rates and outstanding electrochemical performance. With an ultrahigh current density of 5 A g -1 , the Co 2 VO 4 @C anode achieved a capacity of 135.1 mAh g -1 and a >98% capacity retention after 2000 cycles through a pseudocapacitive dominant process. This study provides insights for SIB fast-charging material design and other battery systems such as lithium-ion batteries.

At present, 100 000+ metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been synthesized, and it is challenging to identity the best candidate for a specific application. In this study, MOFs are rapidly screened via a hierarchical approach for propane/propylene (C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 ) separation. First, the adsorption capacity and selectivity of C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 mixture in "Computation-Ready, Experimental" (CoRE) MOFs are predicted via a molecular simulation (MS) method. The relationships between separation metrics and structural factors are established, and top-performing CoRE MOFs are identified. Then, machine learning (ML) models are trained and developed upon the CoRE MOFs using pore size, pore geometry, and framework chemistry as feature descriptors. By introducing binned pore size distributions and geometric descriptors, the accuracy of ML models is substantially improved. The feature importance of the descriptors is physically interpreted by the Gini impurities and Shapley Additive Explanations. Subsequently, the ML models are used to rapidly screen experimental "Cambridge Structural Database" (CSD) MOFs and hypothetical MOFs for C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 separation. In the CSD MOFs, the out-of-sample predictions are found to agree well with simulation results, demonstrating the excellent transferability of the ML models from the CoRE to CSD MOFs. Moreover, nine CSD MOFs are identified to possess separation performance superior to top-performing CoRE MOFs. Finally, the similarity and diversity among experimental and hypothetical MOFs are visualized and compared by the t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE) feature projections. Remarkably, the CoRE and CSD MOFs are revealed to share a close similarity in both chemical and geometric feature spaces. By synergizing MS and ML, the hierarchical approach developed in this study would advance the rapid screening of MOFs across different databases toward industrially important separation processes.

The oxygen evolution reaction has become the bottleneck of electrochemical water splitting for its sluggish kinetics. Developing high-efficiency and low-cost non-noble-metal oxide electrocatalysts is crucial but challenging for industrial application. Herein, superhydrophilic/superaerophobic hierarchical nanoneedle/microflower arrays of Ce-substituted Co 3 O 4 (Ce x Co 3- x O 4 ) in situ grown on the nickel foam are successfully constructed. The hierarchical architecture and superhydrophilic/superaerophobic interface can be facilely regulated by controlling the introduction of Ce into Co 3 O 4 . The unique feature of hierarchical architecture and superhydrophilic/superaerophobic interface is in favor of electrolyte penetration and bubbles release. In addition, the presence of oxygen vacancy and Ce endows the catalyst with enhanced intrinsic activity. Benefiting from these advantages, the optimized Ce 0.12 Co 2.88 O 4 catalyst shows a superior electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with an overpotential of 282 mV at 20 mA cm -2 , and a Tafel slope of 81.4 mV dec -1 . The turnover frequency of 0.0279 s -1 for Ce 0.12 Co 2.88 O 4 is 9.3 times larger than that for Co 3 O 4 at an overpotential of 350 mV. Moreover, the optimized Ce 0.12 Co 2.88 O 4 catalyst shows a robust long-term stability in alkaline media.

Alloyed green-emitting CdZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) demonstrate potential applications in solid-state lighting and displays owing to their various advantages, such as high color purity, light conversion efficiency, and color rendering index. However, their applications in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are limited by their poor photostabilities on blue-emitting gallium nitride (GaN) LED chips. In this study, the effect of the specific surface area (SSA) in the coating layers on the photostabilities of QDs was investigated. SSA was adjusted by controlling the proportions of dense aluminum oxide (AlO X ) layers and porous silica dioxide (SiO 2 ) layers to fabricate QD protective layers via a catalyst-free sol-gel method. The results showed that the synthesized AlO X possessing the lowest SSA among the synthesis protective layers presented the best QD photostabilities on the LED chips. Moreover, they exhibited a 9.9-fold increase in the operational lifetime ( T 80 ) compared to that of pristine QDs. In addition, the QD-based WLED achieved an excellent display performance with a wide color gamut (115%) of the National Television System Committee (NTSC) color gamut standard. This approach offers a promising strategy for enhancing the QD photostabilities for applications in solid-state lighting and displays by coating the protective layers on the QD surface.

Analysis of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is regarded as a useful diagnostic index to monitor tumor development and guide precision medicine. Although the immunoassay is a common strategy for CTC identification and heterogeneity characterization, it is challenged by poor reaction efficiency and laborious manipulations in microdevices, which hinder the sensitivity, throughput, simplification, and applicability. To meet the need for rapid, sensitive, and simple CTC analysis, we developed an efficient CTC detection system by integrating a 3D printed off-chip multisource reagent platform, a bubble retainer, and a single CTC capture microchip, which can achieve CTC capture and identification within 90 min. Compared with traditional CTC identification methods, this system decreases immunostaining time and antibody consumption by 90% and performs the on-chip immunoassay in a fully automated manner. Using this system, CTCs from the peripheral blood of 19 patients with various cancers were captured, detected, and compared with clinical data. The system shows great potential for early screening, real-time monitoring, and precision medicine for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). With the advantages of automation, stability, economy, and user-friendly operation, the proposed system is promising for clinical scenarios.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major cause of dementia characterized by the overexpression of transmembrane amyloid precursor protein and its neurotoxic byproduct amyloid beta (Aβ). A small peptide of considerable hydrophobicity, Aβ is aggregation prone catalyzed by the presence of cell membranes, among other environmental factors. Accordingly, current AD mitigation strategies often aim at breaking down the Aβ-membrane communication, yet no data is available concerning the cohesive interplay of the three key entities of the cell membrane, Aβ, and its inhibitor. Using a lipophilic Laurdan dye and confocal fluorescence microscopy, we observed cell membrane perturbation and actin reorganization induced by Aβ oligomers but not by Aβ monomers or amyloid fibrils. We further revealed recovery of membrane fluidity by ultrasmall MoS 2 quantum dots, also shown in this study as a potent inhibitor of Aβ amyloid aggregation. Using discrete molecular dynamics simulations, we uncovered the binding of MoS 2 and Aβ monomers as mediated by hydrophilic interactions between the quantum dots and the peptide N-terminus. In contrast, Aβ oligomers and fibrils were surface-coated by the ultrasmall quantum dots in distinct testudo-like, reverse protein-corona formations to prevent their further association with the cell membrane and adverse effects downstream. This study offers a crucial new insight and a viable strategy for regulating the amyloid aggregation and membrane-axis of AD pathology with multifunctional nanomedicine.

Oxygen vacancy plays an important role in catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO), but the inherent drawback of its thermodynamic instability causes the deactivation of catalysts. Hence, improving the thermodynamic stability of oxygen vacancy is a crux during HCHO oxidation. Here, a novel and simple nitrogen doping of MnO 2 /C catalyst is designed for HCHO oxidation at room temperature. The surface lattice oxygen of MnO 2 will be activated by nitrogen-doping, which acts as active sites for HCHO oxidation and solves the thermodynamic instability issue of oxygen vacancy. Furthermore, carbon is doped with nitrogen to promote electron transfer and accelerate the HCHO oxidation process. Therefore, the catalytic activity and stability of the catalyst can be significantly promoted, which can completely remove ∼1 ppm HCHO in the tank within 3 h, and remains highly active after 5 cycles at room temperature (RH = 55%). In addition, the excellent removal performance over the prepared catalyst is also attributed to abundant surface oxygen species, amorphous crystallinity, and low reduction temperature. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectrometry (DRIFTS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the reaction mechanism of HCHO. This strategy provides crucial enlightenment for designing novel Mn-based catalysts for application in the HCHO oxidation field.
