Manipulation of infrared emissivity, which is closely related to surface structure and optical parameters of materials, is a crucial approach for realizing dynamic thermal management. In this study, we design a metamaterial consisting of an array of aluminum disks embedded on a surface of a stretchable elastomeric substrate. Mechanical stretching-induced deformation allows dynamic modification of the surface structure and equivalent optical parameters, thus enabling dynamic control of the emissivity. By utilizing the elastomer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the substrate, the microstructure interdisk gap can be altered by stretching the PDMS. Through theoretical calculations, the plausibility of this approach is explained by the excitation of plasmon resonance and the variation in the exposed area of highly absorbent PDMS, and the optimal structures for tuning the infrared emissivity are revealed to be 6 μm in diameter and 100 nm in height. Based on this design, we prepare samples with periods of 7 and 7.9 μm and experimentally demonstrate that a change in the period can cause a change in the emissivity and thus tunability in thermal control performance. The temperature difference between the two samples reaches 44.1 °C at a heating power of 0.28 W/cm 2 for both samples. Furthermore, we construct a stretching platform that enables in situ mechanical stretching to realize dynamic changes in emissivity. The integral infrared emissivity of the sample increases from 0.32 to 0.5 at a biaxial tensile strain of 13%, achieving a 56% modulation rate of the integral infrared emissivity. The material is expected to enable dynamic thermal management.

The selective electrocatalytic reduction of nitrobenzene (NB) to aniline demands a desirable cathodic catalyst to overcome the challenges of the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), a higher overpotential, and a lower selectivity. Here, we deposit Co-doped 1T MoS 2 on Ti mesh by the solvothermal method with different doping percentages of Co as x % Co-MoS 2 (where x = 3, 5, 8, 10, and 12%). Because of the lowest overpotential, lower charge-transfer resistance, strong suppression of the competing HER, and higher electrochemical surface area, 8% Co-MoS 2 achieves 94% selectivity of aniline with 54% faradaic efficiency. The reduction process follows first-order dynamics with a reaction coefficient of 0.5 h -1 . Besides, 8% Co-MoS 2 is highly stable and retains 81% selectivity even after 8 cycles. Mechanistic studies showed that the selective and exothermic adsorption of the nitro group at x % Co-MoS 2 leads to a higher rate of NB reduction and higher selectivity of aniline. The aniline product is successfully removed from the solution by polymerization at FTO. This study signifies the impact of doping metal atoms in tuning the electronic arrangement of 1T-MoS 2 for the facilitation of organic transformations.

Despite the attractive thermoelectric properties in single crystals, the fabrication of high-performance polycrystalline SnSe by a cost-effective strategy remains challenging. In this study, we prepare the undoped SnSe ceramic with remarkable thermoelectric efficiency by the combination of a cold sintering process (CSP) and thermal annealing. The high sintering pressure during CSP induces not only highly oriented grains but also a high concentration of lattice dislocations and stacking faults, which leads to large lattice strain that can shorten the phonon relaxation time. Meanwhile, the thermal annealing breaks the highly resistive SnO x layers at grain boundaries, which improves the electrical conductivity and power factor. In addition, the grain growth during annealing further turns the broken SnO x layers into nanoparticles, which further lowers the thermal conductivity by enhanced scattering. As a result, a peak ZT of 1.3 at 890 K and a high average ZT of 0.69 are achieved in the polycrystalline SnSe, suggesting great potential in mid-temperature power generation. This work may pave the way for the mass production of SnSe-based ceramics for thermoelectric devices.

Mild photothermal therapy (mPTT), which circumvents the limitations of conventional photothermal therapy, is emerging and exhibits remarkable potential in clinical applications. Nevertheless, mPTT is not able to efficiently eradicate tumors because its therapeutic efficacy is dramatically diminished by stress-induced heat shock proteins (HSP). Herein, a core-shell structured Au@Pd (AP) bimetallic nanozyme was fabricated for reactive oxygen species (ROS) augmentation-induced mPTT. The nanocatalytic AP nanozymes with photothermal conversion performance harbor multienzymatic (catalase, oxidase, and peroxidase) activities to induce ROS storm formation. The generated ROS could suppress the heat-defense response of tumor cells by cleaving HSP. Overall, our work highlights a ROS-regulating strategy to counteract hyperthermia-associated resistance in mPTT.

In photothermal treatments (PTTs), normal tissues around cancerous tumors get injured by excessive heat, whereas damaged cancer cells are easily restored by stress-induced heat shock proteins (HSPs) at low temperatures. Therefore, to achieve a unique tumor microenvironment (TME), it is imperative to increase PTT efficiency and reduce normal tissue injury by adopting appropriate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid peroxides (LPO) cross-linked with HSPs. In the present research, a potential strategy for mild photothermal treatments (mPTTs) was proposed by initiating localized catalytic chemical reactions in TME based on Pd nanozyme-modified hydrogenated TiO 2 (H-TiO 2 @Pd). In vitro and in vivo evaluations demonstrated that H-TiO 2 @Pd had good peroxidase-like activities (POD), glutathione oxidase-like activities (GSHOx), and photodynamic properties and also satisfactory biocompatibility for 4T1 cells. Localized catalytic chemical reactions in H-TiO 2 @Pd significantly depleted GSH to downregulate the protein expression of GPX4 and promoted the accumulation of LPO and ROS, which consumed HSP70 or inhibited its function in 4T1 cells. Hence, the as-constructed low-temperature photothermal therapeutic platform based on Pd nanozyme-modified H-TiO 2 can be a promising candidate to develop a safe and effective mPTT for cancer treatments.

For years, most of the advanced polycrystalline thermoelectric (TE) materials are fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) in the research field, mainly because of its high processing efficiency. However, issues like high energy consumption and an expensive apparatus have prevented the application of this strategy in industry. Herein, taking PbTe 0.94 Se 0.06 (PTS) as a typical n-type mid-temperature material, we demonstrate that the cold sintering process (CSP) can serve as a green and cost-effective technology for preparing advanced TE materials. By selecting the solvothermal precursors as liquid sintering aids, the CSP-densified PTS shows a maximum figure of merit of 0.96 at 700 K, which is on par with, if not better than, the reported similar materials prepared by SPS. This remarkable performance is ascribed to the distinct densification procedure in the CSP: (1) the ultralow temperature alleviates the precipitation of Pb, which preserves the high carrier concentration of PTS; (2) the transient liquid phase forms intimate grain boundaries comparable to the high-temperature sintered one, leading to a high carrier mobility; (3) the dissolution-precipitation process greatly restrains the coarsening of precipitates, which effectively suppresses the bipolar effect and lattice thermal conductivity due to enhanced scattering. We believe that these results can greatly encourage the application of CSP in the future development of TE materials.

The electrocatalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline normally faces high overpotential and poor selectivity because of its six-electron redox nature. Herein, a Ag nanoparticles/laser-induced-graphene (LIG) heterointerface was fabricated on polyimide films and employed as an electrode material for an efficient nitrobenzene reduction reaction (NBRR) via a one-step laser direct writing technology. The first-principles calculations reveal that Ag/LIG shows the lowest activation barriers for the NBRR, which could be attributed to the optimum adsorption of the H atom realized by the appropriate interaction between Ag/LIG heterointerfaces and nitrobenzene. As a result, the overpotential of the NBRR is reduced by 217 mV after silver loading, and Ag/LIG shows a high aniline selectivity of 93%. Furthermore, an electrochemical reduction of nitrobenzene in tandem with an electrochemical oxidative polymerization of aniline was designed to serve as an alternative method to remove nitrobenzene from the aqueous solution. This strategy highlights the significance of heterointerfaces for efficient electrocatalysts, which may stimulate the development of novel electrocatalysts to boost the electrocatalytic activity.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have exhibited tremendous potential among the various secondary batteries benefitting from their large energy density, low expense, and enhanced security. However, the commercial use for Li-S batteries is immensely limited by the insulation of S, noticeable volume expansion from S to Li 2 S 2 /Li 2 S, and the undesired shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides (LiPs). Herein, a composite sulfur host has been prepared by in situ incorporations of cobalt nanoparticles (NPs) into nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon spheres (Co/N-PCSs) through the composite micelle assembly strategy. The resultant functional Co/N-PCSs not only possess uniform spherical morphology with large open mesopores, high surface area, and pore volume but also have small Co NPs homogeneously inlaid into the pore walls of carbon frameworks. Both the experimental and theoretical calculation results demonstrate that the formed cobalt NPs can efficiently accelerate the lithium-ion diffusion reaction and greatly entrap the soluble intermediate LiPs. Benefiting from the well-designed structure, the Co/N-PCSs@S cathode with a S loading of 73.82 wt % delivers superior electrochemical performance, including long cycling stability (60% for the residual capacity at 1 A g -1 within 300 cycles) and excellent rate performance (∼512 mAh g -1 at 6 A g -1 ). This design strategy of implanting metal NPs in mesoporous carbon can be inspiring in energy storage applications.

The low powder factor (PF) of polycrystalline oxide perovskites induced by the resistive grain boundaries or known as double Schottky barrier (DSB) greatly restricts their thermoelectric performance in application. Here, a general protocol including (i) powder and (ii) bulk reduction in H 2 /Ar forming gas is demonstrated to break the DSB in La and Nb codoped SrTiO 3 . While the powder reduction guarantees a high carrier concentration by fully stimulating the donor doping effect, the bulk reduction effectively lowers the DSB by influencing the point defects at grain boundaries, which is proved by the combination of cathode luminescence spectra and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy in transmission electron microscopy. The Hall mobility can approach 10 cm 2 V -1 s -1 after two-step reduction, which is similar to the level of single crystals. However, the Seebeck coefficient is not compromised, giving rise to high PF values up to 1.70 mW m -1 K -1 under proper reduction strength. Meanwhile, the reduction process also promotes mild precipitation of Nb nanoparticles, thus effectively lowering the lattice thermal conductivity by scattering phonons. As a result, a remarkable figure of merit reaching 0.4 at 700 K is obtained, which validates the two-step reduction as a reliable strategy toward "electron crystal-phonon glass" behavior in SrTiO 3 -based perovskites.

The NaTi 2 (PO 4 ) 3 (NTP) anode materials exhibit high Na + diffusion dynamics; carbon-based materials can effectively improve its limited electronic conductivity. However, the low Na + diffusion of NTP/C composite materials from inhomogeneous carbon mixing or uncontrollable carbon coating cannot keep up with fast electron transfer, leading to undesirable electrochemical performances. Herein, a uniform and controllable carbon layer is designed on the self-supported-coated NTP nanorod arrays with binder-free (NTP@C NR) to improve Na + and electron kinetics simultaneously. As a result, the NTP@C NR electrodes possess initial coulombic efficiency (ICE = 97%), good rate capabilities (89.1 mA h g -1 at 100 C), and stability with ≈78.4% of capacity retention rate at even 30 C over 1200 cycles. The sodium-ion capacitors with NTP@C NR as an anode and commercially activated carbon as a cathode exhibit ∼9180.0 W kg -1 of power density at 10 A g -1 and super high retention of ≈94.5% at 1 A g -1 over 7000 cycles. This work will help balance transport kinetics between the ion and electron for materials applied in storage devices.

Graphene aerogel (GA) possessing good electrical conductivity and low weight has been widely considered as a promising candidate for high-performance microwave-absorbing (MA) materials. However, simultaneous realization of high reflection loss (RL), low thickness, and light weight remains very challenging for GA because of the trade-off between impedance match and attenuation ability. Herein, through use of (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane as a surface modifier and cross-linker, the GA materials with precisely controlled density are fabricated via a unique solvothermal protocol of zero-volume shrinkage. The density-controlled GA (4.5 mg·cm -3 ) exhibits a remarkable minimum RL (RL min ) of -50 dB at a thickness of 1.14 mm in the K-band, owing to the optimized dielectric properties. Moreover, even higher attenuation ability without sacrificed impedance match is obtained by incorporating magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @C microspheres into the density-controlled GA. Superior MA performance involving unprecedented RL min of -54.0 dB and qualified bandwidth covering 80% of the K-band has been achieved in the superlight Fe 3 O 4 @C/GA composite at a thickness less than 1 mm, which is highly desirable for MA material applied in mobile devices.

Design of nanoparticles (NPs) for biomedical applications requires a thorough understanding of cascades of nano-bio interactions at different interfaces. Here, we take into account the cascading effect of NP functionalization on interactions with target cell membranes by determining coatings of biomolecules in biological media. Cell culture experiments show that NPs with more hydrophobic surfaces are heavily ingested by cells in both the A549 and HEK293 cell lines. However, before reaching the target cell, both the identity and amount of recruited biomolecules can be influenced by the pristine NPs' hydrophobicity. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations show that hydrophobic NPs acquire coatings of more biomolecules, which may conceal the properties of the as-engineered NPs and impact the targeting specificity. Based on these results, we propose an amphiphilic ligand coating on NPs. DPD simulations reveal the design principle, following which the amphiphilic ligands first curl in solvent to reduce the surface hydrophobicity, thus suppressing the assemblage of biomolecules. Upon attaching to the membrane, the curled ligands extend and rearrange to gain contacts with lipid tails, thus dragging NPs into the membrane for translocation. Three NP-membrane interaction states are identified that are found to depend on the NP size and membrane surface tension. These results can provide useful guidelines to fabricate ligand-coated NPs for practical use in targeted drug delivery, and motivate further studies of nano-bio-interactions with more consideration of cascading effects.

Copper sulfide has been regarded as a promising thermoelectric material with relatively high thermoelectric performance and abundant resource. Large-scale synthesis and low-cost production of high-performance thermoelectric materials are keys to widespread application of thermoelectric technology. Here, Cu 2- x S particles encapsulated in a thin carbon shell are fabricated by a scalable wet chemical method (19.7 g/batch). The synthesized particles go through the crystal-phase transition from orthorhombic to tetragonal during high-temperature annealing and sintering. After the phase transition, electrical conductivity of this composite (Cu 2- x S@C) increases by approximately 50% compared to that of the pure Cu 2- x S sample, and can be attibuted to an increase in carrier concentration. Phonon scattering interface formation and superionic phase of Cu 2- x S@C results in very low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.22 W m -1 K -1 , and maximum thermoelectric figure of merit ( ZT) of 1.04 at 773 K, which is excellent for thermoelectric performance in pure-phase copper sulfide produced via chemical synthesis. This discovery sets the stage for the use of facile wet chemical synthesis methods for large-scale transition-metal chalcogenide thermoelectric material production.

Ceramic composites with good electrical conductivity and high strength that can provide electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding are highly desirable for the applications in harsh environment. In this study, lightweight, highly conductive, and strong mullite composites incorporated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) are successfully fabricated by spark plasma sintering at merely 1200 °C using the core-shell structured γ-Al 2 O 3 @SiO 2 powder as a precursor. The transient viscous sintering induced by the γ-Al 2 O 3 @SiO 2 precursor not only prohibits the reaction between mullite and rGO by greatly reducing the sintering temperature, but also induces a highly anisotropic structure in the rGO/mullite composite, leading to an extremely high in-plane electrical conductivity (696 S m -1 for only 0.89 vol % of rGO) and magnitude lower cross-plane electrical conductivity in the composites. As a result, very large loss tangent and EMI shielding effectiveness (>32 dB) can be achieved in the whole K band with extremely low rGO loading (less than 1 vol %), which is beneficial to maintain a good mechanical performance in ceramic matrix composites. Accordingly, the rGO/mullite composites show greatly improved strength and toughness when the rGO content is not high, which enables them to be applied as highly efficient EMI shielding materials while providing excellent mechanical performance.
