High-loading Pt/C catalysts play an important role in the practical application of metal-air batteries and fuel cells because of their superior activity, high conductivity, and commercial availability. It is well known that high loadings always lead to the agglomeration of Pt nanoparticles, resulting in a loss of catalytic activity and stability; thus, it still remains a challenge to prepare high-loading Pt/C catalysts with high dispersion and small particle sizes. Here, we introduce a surfactant-assisted microwave discharge method to prepare high-loading (40 wt %) Pt/C electrocatalysts with ultrafine particle sizes (∼3.19 nm) and good dispersion. Benefitting from the high-temperature property and reducibility of carbon-induced-arc, the surfactant and Pt precursors undergo rapid decomposition, reduction, and carbonization, generating the structure of Pt@C on carbon black. The carbon derived from the surfactant can not only inhibit the agglomeration of Pt nanoparticles but also prevent the Pt core from toxication, ensuring high activity and stability of the high-loading Pt/C catalyst. When evaluated in the oxygen reduction reaction, the as-prepared Pt/C catalyst demonstrates a comparable activity and better methanol resistance to commercial Pt/C.

Optical manipulation of metal nanowires offers a promising route to building optoelectronic nanosystems, which remains a challenge because of their strong absorption or scattering properties. Here, precise optical manipulation of a single Ag nanowire, including capture, translation, rotation, immobilization, and release, was readily achieved within a large operation range of 100 μm by a single unpolarized Gaussian beam based on an optical scattering force. Besides, the optical forces and torques exerted on the Ag nanowires under different conditions were quantitatively analyzed and calculated by simulation to give insight into the manipulation mechanism. This proposed scattering-force-based optical manipulation method also has great position and orientation stability with a capture stiffness of 1.2 pN/μm and an orientation standard deviation of 0.3°. More surprisingly, it is independent of both laser polarization and the metal material, shape, and size and is a universal and promising strategy for the manipulation and assembly of nontransparent structures in mesoscopic/Mie sizes.

Controlling the morphology of the metal-organic framework (MOF) for nanosheets is beneficial for understanding their crystal growth kinetics and useful for extending these MOF nanosheets to advanced applications, in particular for gas separation and device integration. However, synthesizing MOF nanosheets with uniform thickness or desirable size still remains challenging. Herein, we provide a crystal dissolution-growth strategy for fabricating dispersible porphyrin MOF nanosheets with lateral dimensions and nanometer thickness. A morphological transition (bulk crystals-nanosheets-bulk crystals) in Zn-TCPP was observed when controlling the crystal growth kinetics by adjusting the reaction parameters (temperature and acidity). These findings encouraged the synthesis of other types of nanosheets (Cu-TCPP, Zn-TCPP (Pd), and Cu-BDC nanosheets). Zn-TCPP (Pd) nanosheets were applied in field-effect transistors and exhibited photoresponse characteristics. This work demonstrates a new strategy for obtaining MOF nanosheets and casts a new light upon fabricating two-dimensional inorganic-organic hybrid materials with controlled thickness.

Supported metal nanoparticles (MNPs) have exhibited superior catalytic performance in various heterogeneous catalysis applications, which is usually influenced or even determined by the physicochemical properties of their porous supports. It is well acknowledged that understanding the regulation mechanism of supports is an important prerequisite to predict the catalytic performance of supported MNPs as well as the development of advanced catalysts. Here, we demonstrated that different transition-metal clusters (from Group IIIB to Group IIB) within metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) could accurately regulate the surface electronic status of supported platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs), and the Pt/MOF composites showed a periodic activity trend in hydrogenation of 1-hexene. A strong correlation was found between the catalytic activity of Pt/MOF composites and the number of electrons in their outmost d orbitals of the transition-metal species, suggesting that the latter could play the role of prediction descriptor. Furthermore, this descriptor can be extended to predict the hydrogenation activity of more Pt/MOF composites and provide an important guiding principle for the design of supported MNPs catalysts.

In nature, biochemical reactions often take place in confined spaces, as typically exemplified by cells. As numerous cellular reactors can be integrated to maintain the living system, researchers have made constant efforts to construct cell-like structures for achieving similar transformations in vitro. Micro/nano reactors engineered by polymers and colloids are becoming popular and being applied in many fields, especially there has been an increasing trend toward constructing metal-organic framework (MOF) micro/nano reactors with the thriving of MOF nanotechnologies. Because of the uniform pores of MOFs, the transmission of substances can be regulated more accurately. Along with properties of large specific surface area, functional diversity and precise control of the particle size, MOFs are also ideal platforms for building distinct microenvironments for biological substances. Compared with traditional polymersomes and colloidosomes, the unique characteristics of MOFs render them potent micro/nano reactor shell materials, mimicking cells for applications in enzymatic catalysis, sensing, nanotherapy, vaccine, biodegradation, etc. This review highlights recent signs of progress on the design of MOF micro/nano reactors and their applications in biology, discusses the existing problems, and prospects their promising properties for smarter multifunctional applications.

Although there are plenty of merits for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, their undesired shuttle effect and insulated nature are hindering the practical applications. Here, a conductive metal-organic framework (MOF)-modified separator has been designed and fabricated through a facile filtration method to address the issues. Specifically, its intrinsic microporous structure, hydrophilic polar property, and conductive feature could make it easy to contact with and trap polysulfides and boost the kinetics of electrochemical reactions. Both the physical and chemical properties of the as-prepared separator are beneficial to alleviating the shuttle effect and enhancing the rate capability. Accordingly, the electrochemical performance of the battery with a MOF-modified separator was significantly improved.

Here, a facile strategy is reported to efficiently hybridize metal nanoparticles (MNPs) with typical metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) of ZIF-8 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-8), which employs bovine serum albumin (BSA, a serum albumin protein derived from cows) as the amphiphilic stabilizer to increase the affinity of MNP toward MOFs. For instance, the as-synthesized PdNPs/ZIF-8 composites with diameter from 100 to 200 nm always maintain well-defined crystalline structure, and the PdNPs with small size of ∼2 nm are well-dispersed in the crystal of MOFs without serious aggregations due to the BSA stabilizer. In Suzuki cross-coupling reactions of aryl halide, the PdNPs/ZIF-8 as catalysts have exhibited high activity and satisfied reusability owing to the use of BSA stabilizer as well as the fixing of MOFs matrixes. In addition, the strategy also can be extended to synthesize other kinds of MNPs/MOFs hybrid composites with tunable particle size, which brings more opportunity for functional MOFs hybrid materials.
