The rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 caused the COVID-19 pandemic and accelerated vaccine development to prevent the spread of the virus and control the disease. Given the sustained high infectivity and evolution of SARS-CoV-2, there is an ongoing interest in developing COVID-19 serology tests to monitor population-level immunity. To address this critical need, we designed a paper-based multiplexed vertical flow assay (xVFA) using five structural proteins of SARS-CoV-2, detecting IgG and IgM antibodies to monitor changes in COVID-19 immunity levels. Our platform not only tracked longitudinal immunity levels but also categorized COVID-19 immunity into three groups: protected, unprotected, and infected, based on the levels of IgG and IgM antibodies. We operated two xVFAs in parallel to detect IgG and IgM antibodies using a total of 40 μL of human serum sample in <20 min per test. After the assay, images of the paper-based sensor panel were captured using a mobile phone-based custom-designed optical reader and then processed by a neural network-based serodiagnostic algorithm. The serodiagnostic algorithm was trained with 120 measurements/tests and 30 serum samples from 7 randomly selected individuals and was blindly tested with 31 serum samples from 8 different individuals, collected before vaccination as well as after vaccination or infection, achieving an accuracy of 89.5%. The competitive performance of the xVFA, along with its portability, cost-effectiveness, and rapid operation, makes it a promising computational point-of-care (POC) serology test for monitoring COVID-19 immunity, aiding in timely decisions on the administration of booster vaccines and general public health policies to protect vulnerable populations.

In the Fourth Industrial Revolution, as the connection between objects and people becomes increasingly important, interest in wearable optoelectronic device-based medical diagnosis is on the rise. Pulse oximetry sensors based on a fiber platform, which is the smallest unit of clothing, could be considered an attractive candidate for this application. In this study, red and green quantum-dot light-emitting fibers (QDLEFs) based on a 250 μm-diameter 1-dimensional fiber were successfully implemented, achieving high current efficiencies of approximately 22.46 mW/sr/A and 23.6 mW/sr/A and narrow full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of about 33 nm, respectively. In addition, its omnidirectional flexibility was confirmed through a vertical and lateral bending test with 0.92% strain. By employing a transparent and flexible elastomer, a wearable pulse oximeter incorporating QDLEFs was successfully demonstrated for oxygen saturation level (SpO 2 ) monitoring on finger and wrist. It was demonstrated to be washable, and could be operated for up to about 18 h. Due to the elastomer and bottom emission, it exhibited excellent wear resistance characteristics in a 50 cycle reciprocating test conducted at about 2180.43 kPa with 220-grit abrasive paper sheet. A theoretical investigation based on modified photon diffusion analysis (MPDA) modeling also determined that using narrow FWHM light sources, such as QDLEFs, improves the resolution and accuracy of SpO 2 monitoring. Accordingly, the proposed QDLEF showed distinguished potential as an all-in-one clothing type pulse oximetry.

Quantitative phase imaging enables precise and label-free characterizations of individual nano-objects within a large volume, without a priori knowledge of the sample or imaging system. While emerging common path implementations are simple enough to promise a broad dissemination, their phase sensitivity still falls short of precisely estimating the mass or polarizability of vesicles, viruses, or nanoparticles in single-shot acquisitions. In this paper, we revisit the Zernike filtering concept, originally crafted for intensity-only detectors, with the aim of adapting it to wavefront imaging. We demonstrate, through numerical simulation and experiments based on high-resolution wavefront sensing, that a simple Fourier-plane add-on can significantly enhance phase sensitivity for subdiffraction objects─achieving over an order of magnitude increase (×12)─while allowing the quantitative retrieval of both intensity and phase. This advancement allows for more precise nano-object detection and metrology.

Donor-based qubits in silicon, manufactured using scanning tunneling microscope (STM) lithography, provide a promising route to realizing full-scale quantum computing architectures. This is due to the precision of donor placement, long coherence times, and scalability of the silicon material platform. The properties of multiatom quantum dot qubits, however, depend on the exact number and location of the donor atoms within the quantum dots. In this work, we develop machine learning techniques that allow accurate and real-time prediction of the donor number at the qubit site during STM patterning. Machine learning image recognition is used to determine the probability distribution of donor numbers at the qubit site directly from STM images during device manufacturing. Models in excess of 90% accuracy are found to be consistently achieved by mitigating overfitting through reduced model complexity, image preprocessing, data augmentation, and examination of the intermediate layers of the convolutional neural networks. The results presented in this paper constitute an important milestone in automating the manufacture of atom-based qubits for computation and sensing applications.

Medical mineralogy explores the interactions between natural minerals and living organisms such as cells, tissues, and organs and develops therapeutic and diagnostic applications in drug delivery, medical devices, and healthcare materials. Many minerals (especially clays) have been recognized for pharmacological activities and therapeutic potential. Halloysite clay (Chinese medicine name: Chishizhi), manifested as one-dimensional aluminum silicate nanotubes (halloysite nanotubes, HNTs), has gained applications in hemostasis, wound repair, gastrointestinal diseases, tissue engineering, detection and sensing, cosmetics, and daily chemicals formulations. Various biomedical applications of HNTs are derived from hollow tubular structures, high mechanical strength, good biocompatibility, bioactivity, and unique surface characteristics. This natural nanomaterial is safe, abundantly available, and may be processed with environmentally safe green chemistry methods. This review describes the structure and physicochemical properties of HNTs relative to bioactivity. We discuss surface area, porosity and surface defects, hydrophilicity, heterogeneity and charge of external and internal surfaces, as well as biosafety. The paper provides comprehensive guidance for the development of this tubule nanoclay and its advanced biomedical applications for clinical diagnosis and therapy.

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs), especially those containing nickel (Ni), are increasingly recognized for their potential in photo(-/)electrocatalytic water oxidation due to the abundant availability of Ni, their corrosion resistance, and their minimal toxicity. This review provides a comprehensive examination of Ni-based LDHs in electrocatalytic (EC), photocatalytic (PC), and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) water oxidation processes. The review delves into the operational principles, highlighting similarities and distinctions as well as the benefits and limitations associated with each method of water oxidation. It includes a detailed discussion on the synthesis of monolayer, ultrathin, and bulk Ni-based LDHs, focusing on the merits and drawbacks inherent to each synthesis approach. Regarding the EC oxygen evolution reaction (OER), strategies to improve catalytic performance and insights into the structural evolution of Ni-based LDHs during the electrocatalytic process are summarized. Furthermore, the review extensively covers the advancements in Ni-based LDHs for PEC OER, including an analysis of semiconductors paired with Ni-based LDHs to form photoanodes, with a focus on their enhanced activity, stability, and underlying mechanisms facilitated by LDHs. The review concludes by addressing the challenges and prospects in the development of innovative Ni-based LDH catalysts for practical applications. The comprehensive insights provided in this paper will not only stimulate further research but also engage the scientific community, thus driving the field of photo(-/)electrocatalytic water oxidation forward.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have significant potential for applications in portable electric vehicles and intermittent renewable energy storage due to their relatively low cost. Currently, hard carbon (HC) materials are considered commercially viable anode materials for SIBs due to their advantages, including larger capacity, low cost, low operating voltage, and inimitable microstructure. Among these materials, renewable biomass-derived hard carbon anodes are commonly used in SIBs. However, the reports about biomass hard carbon from basic research to industrial applications are very rare. In this paper, we focus on the research progress of biomass-derived hard carbon materials from the following perspectives: (1) sodium storage mechanisms in hard carbon; (2) optimization strategies for hard carbon materials encompassing design, synthesis, heteroatom doping, material compounding, electrolyte modulation, and presodiation; (3) classification of different biomass-derived hard carbon materials based on precursor source, a comparison of their properties, and a discussion on the effects of different biomass sources on hard carbon material properties; (4) challenges and strategies for practical of biomass-derived hard carbon anode in SIBs; and (5) an overview of the current industrialization of biomass-derived hard carbon anodes. Finally, we present the challenges, strategies, and prospects for the future development of biomass-derived hard carbon materials.

In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have been widely recognized as an ideal platform for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). Given their rich structural phases, phase transformation in 2D TMDCs is an efficient strategy to tailor their SERS performance. In this paper, we present the great SERS performance of multilayer 2M-WS 2 and then investigate the effect of its phase transformation on SERS performance. It is observed that multilayer 2M-WS 2 nanosheets undergo a thermally induced single-crystal phase transition from 2M-WS 2 to 2H-WS 2 upon thermal annealing or laser treatment. Distinguishing from the commercially available pure 2H-WS 2 (P-2H-WS 2 ), 2H-WS 2 obtained by annealing and laser treatment still retain SERS properties comparable to those of 2M-WS 2 , among which the detection limits for CV molecules (10 -8 M) are 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of P-2H-WS 2 and the Raman intensity enhancements are ∼10-37 times higher. In contrast to the charge transfer (CT) mechanism governed by the Fermi level in metallic-phase 2M-WS 2 , 2H-WS 2 obtained by phase transition exhibits accelerated CT facilitated by the bandgap reduction and reorganization resulting from the abundance of vacancies. This study introduces an interesting perspective and potential avenue for enhancing SERS through metal-to-semiconductor phase transitions in 2D TMDCs materials.

This paper reports how CdSe core-only nanoplatelets (NPLs) coupled with plasmonic Al nanoparticle lattices can exhibit exciton-polariton lasing. By improving a procedure to synthesize monodisperse 4-monolayer CdSe NPLs, we could resolve polariton decay dynamics and pathways. Experiment and theory confirmed that the system is in the strong coupling regime based on anticrossings in the dispersion diagrams and magnitude of the Rabi-splitting values. Notably, polariton lasing is observed only for cavity lattice periodicities that exhibit specific dispersive characteristics that enable polariton accumulation. The threshold of polariton lasing is 25-fold lower than the reported photon lasing values from CdSe NPLs in similar cavity designs. This open-cavity platform offers a simple approach to control exciton polaritons anticipated to benefit quantum information processing, optoelectronics, and chemical reactions.

Defect engineering and nitrogen doping being effective strategies for modulating the surface chemical state of the carbon matrix have been widely explored to promote the catalytic activity in the territory of electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices. However, the controllable synthesis of carbon material with high-density specific defects and high nitrogen doping is still full of challenges. Here, we first synthesize one-dimensional necklace-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanochains (N-CNCs) with abundant defects on carbon fiber paper (CFP) by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. The resultant nanostructures are a bunch of interconnected carbon spheres with a hollow structure at the internode and present the complete one-dimensional nanochain configuration. Specifically, the N-CNCs with a corrugated surface possesses high content of sp 3 defects (31.2%) and nitrogen (23.6 at %). Combining finite element analysis and experimental results, it reveals that the robust shear field generated by etching gas releasing from thermal decomposition of melamine in situ modulates the CVD process via changing the size and force environment of the metal catalyst droplets for formation of N-CNCs. Benefiting from the high ratio of sp 3 /sp 2 and nitrogen doped on the surface, the N-CNCs@CFP displays a superior electrocatalytic performance for CO 2 RR, delivering CO Faradaic efficiency of 95.9% and a current density of 23.2 mA cm -2 at -0.86 V vs RHE. This work provides promising synthesis strategy and some inspirations for construction of ultradense and specific defects coupling with nitrogen doping sites into carbon materials to achieve high-efficiency electrocatalysis applications.

In recent years, steady progress has been made in synthesizing and characterizing engineered nanoparticles, resulting in several approved drugs and multiple promising candidates in clinical trials. Regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency released important guidance documents facilitating nanoparticle-based drug product development, particularly in the context of liposomes and lipid-based carriers. Even with the progress achieved, it is clear that many barriers must still be overcome to accelerate translation into the clinic. At the recent conference workshop "Mechanisms and Barriers in Nanomedicine" in May 2023 in Colorado, U.S.A., leading experts discussed the formulation, physiological, immunological, regulatory, clinical, and educational barriers. This position paper invites open, unrestricted, nonproprietary discussion among senior faculty, young investigators, and students to trigger ideas and concepts to move the field forward.

In nature, chirality transfer refines biomolecules across all size scales, bestowing them with a myriad of sophisticated functions. Despite recent advances in replicating chirality transfer with biotic or abiotic building blocks, a molecular understanding of the underlying mechanism of chirality transfer remains a daunting challenge. In this paper, the coassembly of two types of glycopeptide molecules differing in capability of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds enabled the involvement of discontinuous hydrogen bond, which allowed for a nanoscale chirality transfer from glycopeptide molecules to chiral micelles, yet inhibited the micrometer scale chirality transfer toward helix formation, leading to an achiral transfer from chiral micelles to planar monolayer. Upon stacking the monolayer into a bilayer, the nonsuperimposable front and back faces of the chiral micelles involved in the monolayer ribbons lead to the opposite rotation of two layers toward increasing the continuity of H-bonds. The resultant continuity triggered the symmetry breaking of stacked bilayers and thus reactivated the micrometer-scale chirality transfer toward the final helix. This work delineates a promising step toward a better understanding and replicating the naturally occurring chirality transfer events and will be instructive to future chiral material design.

Since the discovery of ferromagnetic nanoparticles Fe 3 O 4 that exhibit enzyme-like activity in 2007, the research on nanoenzymes has made significant progress. With the in-depth study of various nanoenzymes and the rapid development of related nanotechnology, nanoenzymes have emerged as a promising alternative to natural enzymes. Within nanozymes, there is a category of metal-based single-atom nanozymes that has been rapidly developed due to low cast, convenient preparation, long storage, less immunogenicity, and especially higher efficiency. More importantly, single-atom nanozymes possess the capacity to scavenge reactive oxygen species through various mechanisms, which is beneficial in the tissue repair process. Herein, this paper systemically highlights the types of metal single-atom nanozymes, their catalytic mechanisms, and their recent applications in tissue repair. The existing challenges are identified and the prospects of future research on nanozymes composed of metallic nanomaterials are proposed. We hope this review will illuminate the potential of single-atom nanozymes in tissue repair, encouraging their sequential clinical translation.

In this paper, N-doped TiO 2 mixed crystals are prepared via direct calcination of TiN for highly selective oxidation of CH 4 to HCHO at room temperature. The structures of the prepared TiO 2 samples are characterized to be N-doped TiO 2 of anatase and rutile mixed crystals. The crystal structures of TiO 2 samples are determined by XRD spectra and Raman spectra, while N doping is demonstrated by TEM mapping, ONH inorganic element analysis, and high-resolution XPS results. Significantly, the production rate of HCHO is as high as 23.5 mmol·g -1 ·h -1 with a selectivity over 90%. Mechanism studies reveal that H 2 O is the main oxygen source and acts through the formation of ·OH. DFT calculations indicate that the construction of a mixed crystal structure and N-doping modification mainly act by increasing the adsorption capacity of H 2 O. An efficient photocatalyst was prepared by us to convert CH 4 to HCHO with high yield and selectivity, greatly promoting the development of the photocatalytic CH 4 conversion study.

In this paper, we investigate how the dielectric constant, ϵ, of an electrolyte solvent influences the current rectification characteristics of bipolar nanopores. It is well recognized that bipolar nanopores with two oppositely charged regions rectify current when exposed to an alternating electric potential difference. Here, we consider dilute electrolytes with NaCl only and with a mixture of NaCl and charged nanoparticles. These systems are studied using two levels of description, all-atom explicit water molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and coarse-grained implicit solvent MD simulations. The charge density and electric potential profiles and current-voltage relationship predicted by the implicit solvent simulations with ϵ = 11.3 show good agreement with the predictions from the explicit water simulations. Under nonequilibrium conditions, the predictions of the implicit solvent simulations with a dielectric constant closer to the one of bulk water are significantly different from the predictions obtained with the explicit water model. These findings are closely aligned with experimental data on the dielectric constant of water when confined to nanometric spaces, which suggests that ϵ decreases significantly compared to its value in the bulk. Moreover, the largest electric current rectification is observed in systems containing nanoparticles when ϵ = 78.8. Using enhanced sampling, we have shown that this larger rectification arises from the presence of a significantly deeper minimum in the free energy of the system with a larger ϵ, and when a negative voltage bias is applied. Since implicit solvent models and mean-field continuum theories are often used to design Janus membranes based on bipolar nanopores, this work highlights the importance of properly accounting for the effects of confinement on the dielectric constant of the electrolyte solvent. The results presented here indicate that the dielectric constant in implicit solvent simulations may be used as an adjustable parameter to approximately account for the effects of nanometric confinement on aqueous electrolyte solvents.

This paper describes how branch lengths of anisotropic nanoparticles can affect interactions between grafted ligands and cell-membrane receptors. Using live-cell, single-particle tracking, we found that DNA aptamer-gold nanostar nanoconstructs with longer branches showed improved binding efficacy to human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) on cancer cell membranes. Inhibiting nanoconstruct-HER2 binding promoted nonspecific interactions, which increased the rotational speed of long-branched nanoconstructs but did not affect that of short-branched constructs. Bivariate analysis of the rotational and translational dynamics showed that longer branch lengths increased the ratio of targeting to nontargeting interactions. We also found that longer branches increased the nanoconstruct-cell interaction times before internalization and decreased intracellular trafficking velocities. Differences in binding efficacy revealed by single-particle dynamics can be attributed to the distinct protein corona distributions on short- and long-branched nanoconstructs, as validated by transmission electron microscopy. Minimal protein adsorption at the high positive curvature tips of long-branched nanoconstructs facilitated binding of DNA aptamer ligands to HER2. Our study reveals the significance of nanoparticle branch length in regulating local chemical environment and interactions with live cells at the single-particle level.

The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is the core component of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which is the place where the reaction occurrence, the multiphase material transfer and the energy conversion, and the development of MEA with high activity and long stability are crucial for the practical application of PEMFCs. Currently, efforts are devoted to developing the regulation of MEA nanostructure engineering, which is believed to have advantages in improving catalyst utilization, maximizing three-phase boundaries, enhancing mass transport, and improving operational stability. This work reviews recent research progress on platinum group metal (PGM) and PGM-free catalysts with multidimensional nanostructures, catalyst layers (CLs), and nano-MEAs for PEMFCs, emphasizing the importance of structure-function relationships, aiming to guide the further development of the performance for PEMFCs. Then the design strategy of the MEA interface is summarized systematically. In addition, the application of in situ and operational characterization techniques to adequately identify current density distributions, hot spots, and water management visualization of MEAs is also discussed. Finally, the limitations of nanostructured MEA research are discussed and future promising research directions are proposed. This paper aims to provide valuable insights into the fundamental science and technical engineering of efficient MEA interfaces for PEMFCs.

E-skins, capable of responding to mechanical stimuli, hold significant potential in the field of robot haptics. However, it is a challenge to obtain e-skins with both high sensitivity and mechanical stability. Here, we present a bioinspired piezoresistive sensor with hierarchical structures based on polyaniline/polystyrene core-shell nanoparticles polymerized on air-laid paper. The combination of laser-etched reusable templates and sensitive materials that can be rapidly synthesized enables large-scale production. Benefiting from the substantially enlarged deformation of the hierarchical structure, the developed piezoresistive electronics exhibit a decent sensitivity of 21.67 kPa -1 and a subtle detection limit of 3.4 Pa. Moreover, an isolation layer is introduced to enhance the interface stability of the e-skin, with a fracture limit of 66.34 N/m. Furthermore, the e-skin can be seamlessly integrated onto gloves without any detachment issues. With the assistance of deep learning, it achieves a 98% accuracy rate in object recognition. We anticipate that this strategy will render e-skin with more robust interfaces and heightened sensing capabilities, offering a favorable pathway for large-scale production.

The utilization of carbon-based fibers as a fundamental constituent holds strong appeal for diverse materials and devices. However, the poor fiber graphitic structure resulting from the heat treatment of atactic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) precursors often leads to a modest performance of carbon-based fibers. This paper takes electrospun carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as the research object and provides a seed-assisted graphitization strategy to improve the fiber graphitic structures. The typical melamine/cyanuric acid self-assembly precursor of graphitic carbon nitride is applied as supramolecular seeds in CNFs and demonstrates significant promotion of fiber graphitization, while it decomposes at elevated temperatures. Further studies show that the higher carbon content contributes to the better heat resistance of seeds; thus, nanoscale 2,6-diaminopyridine/cyanuric acid and 2,4,6-triaminopyrimidine/barbituric acid supramolecular seeds are developed. Both systems can be uniformly distributed in PAN precursors through in situ self-assembly and withstand high-temperature carbonization without severe pyrolysis. The dispersed seeds contribute to the formation of fibrillar PAN crystals and promote their conversion to ordered graphitic domains through nucleation and templating roles. The obtained CNFs exhibit increased crystallinity and graphitization degree with improved orientation and refined size of fiber crystals. As a result, the strength, modulus, and elongation at break of CNFs are comprehensively enhanced.

The development of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism is driven not only by the interest of low-dimensional physics but also by potential applications in high-density miniaturized spintronic devices. However, 2D materials possessing a ferromagnetic order with a relatively high Curie temperature ( T ) are rare. In this paper, the evidence of ferromagnetism in monolayer FeCl c ) are rare. In this paper, the evidence of ferromagnetism in monolayer FeCl 2 on Au(111) surfaces, as well as the interlayer antiferromagnetic coupling of bilayer FeCl 2 , is characterized by using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy. A Curie temperature ( T c ) of ∼147 K is revealed for monolayer FeCl 2 , based on our static magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements. Furthermore, temperature-dependent magnetization dynamics is investigated by the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. A transition from one- to two-step demagnetization occurs as the lattice temperature approaches T c , which supports the Elliott-Yafet spin relaxation mechanism. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms governing ultrafast magnetization in 2D ferromagnetic materials.

Noble-metal nanocrystals have emerged as essential electrode materials for catalytic oxidation of organic small molecule fuels in direct liquid fuel cells (DLFCs). However, for large-scale commercialization of DLFCs, adopting cost-effective techniques and optimizing their structures using advanced matrices are crucial. Notably, noble metal-decorated porous carbon nanoarchitectures exhibit exceptional electrocatalytic performances owing to their three-dimensional cross-linked porous networks, large accessible surface areas, homogeneous dispersion (of noble metals), reliable structural stability, and outstanding electrical conductivity. Consequently, they can be utilized to develop next-generation anode catalysts for DLFCs. Considering the recent expeditious advancements in this field, this comprehensive review provides an overview of the current progress in noble metal-decorated porous carbon nanoarchitectures. This paper meticulously outlines the associated synthetic strategies, precise microstructure regulation techniques, and their application in electrooxidation of small organic molecules. Furthermore, the review highlights the research challenges and future opportunities in this prospective research field, offering valuable insights for both researchers and industry experts.

Water-induced electricity harvesting has gained much significance for energy sustainability. Bio-based hydrovoltaic materials increase the attractiveness of this strategy. Although promising, it faces a challenge due to its reliance on fresh water and its inherently low power output. Herein, the energy from alkalinity-gradient power generation demonstrated the feasibility of reuse of alkaline wastewater to develop an all-wood-based water-induced electric generator (WEG) based on ion concentration gradients. The intermittent water droplets bring about uneven distribution of electrolyte and endow delignified wood with the difference of ion concentration along aligned cellulose nanochannels, thus supplying electrical power. The practice of using alkali reservoirs, including industrial wastewater, further contributes to electricity generation. The cubic WEG with a side length of 2 cm can produce an ultrahigh open-circuit voltage of about 1.1 V and a short-circuit current of up to 320 μA. A power output of 6.75 μW cm -2 is correspondingly realized. Series-connected WEGs can be used as an energy source for commercial electronics and self-powered systems. Our design provides a double value proposition, allowing for sustainable energy generation and wastewater reuse.

Molecular electronics promises the ultimate level of miniaturization of computers and other machines as organic molecules are the smallest known physical objects with nontrivial structure and function. But despite the plethora of molecular switches, memories, and motors developed during the almost 50-years long history of molecular electronics, mass production of molecular computers is still an elusive goal. This is mostly due to the lack of scalable nanofabrication methods capable of rapidly producing complex structures (similar to silicon chips or living cells) with atomic precision and a small number of defects. Living nature solves this problem by using linear polymer templates encoding large volumes of structural information into sequence of hydrogen bonded end groups which can be efficiently replicated and which can drive assembly of other molecular components into complex supramolecular structures. In this paper, we propose a nanofabrication method based on a class of photosensitive polymers inspired by these natural principles, which can operate in concert with UV photolithography used for fabrication of current microelectronic processors. We believe that such a method will enable a smooth transition from silicon toward molecular nanoelectronics and photonics. To demonstrate its feasibility, we performed a computational screening of candidate molecules that can selectively bind and therefore allow the deterministic assembly of molecular components. In the process, we unearthed trends and design principles applicable beyond the immediate scope of our proposed nanofabrication method, e.g., to biologically relevant DNA analogues and molecular recognition within hydrogen-bonded systems.

InP-based colloidal nanocrystals are being developed as an alternative to cadmium-based materials. However, their optical properties have not been widely studied. In this paper, the fundamental magneto-optical properties of InP/ZnSe/ZnS nanocrystals are investigated at cryogenic temperatures. Ensemble measurements using two-photon excitation spectroscopy revealed the band-edge hole state to have 1 S h symmetry, resolving some controversy on this issue. Single nanocrystal microphotoluminescence measurements provided increased spectral resolution that facilitated direct detection of the lowest energy confined acoustic phonon mode at 0.9 meV, which is several times smaller than the previously reported values for similar nanocrystals. Zeeman splitting of narrow spectral lines in a magnetic field indicated a bright trion emission. A simple trion model was used to identify a positive trion charge. Furthermore, the Zeeman split spectra allowed the direct measurement of both the electron and hole g -factors, which match existing theoretical predictions.

Ion-sieve adsorbents are effective materials in practical applications for extracting liquid lithium. However, it is greatly suppressed in adsorption capacity and selectivity (Li/Mg) under natural near-neutral conditions of seawater or salt lakes, due to the interference of in situ released H + and Mg 2+ impurity. This paper proposes an adsorbent with a microenvironment-modulating function as a solution. The introduction of quaternary ammonium groups into the carrier accelerates the migration of H + , while preventing the diffusion of Mg 2+ by electrostatic repulsion. Besides, it can also prestore OH - , effectively consuming the generated hydrogen ions in situ . Based on the rational design, the alkali consumption of the microenvironment-modulating strategy is dramatically reduced to 1/144 of the traditional alkali-adding method. Additionally, adsorption performance is significantly promoted under natural pH conditions, with a maximum 33 times higher separation factor (selectivity) and 4 times higher adsorption capacity than commercial ion-sieve adsorbents. This development indicates the feasibility of using microenvironment modulation for effective lithium extraction and inspires the development of next-generation high-performance adsorbents.

To achieve a highly realistic robot, closely mimicking human skin in terms of materials and functionality is essential. This paper presents an all-protein silk fibroin bionic skin (SFBS) that emulates both fast-adapting (FA) and slow-adapting (SA) receptors. The mechanically different silk film and hydrogel, which exhibited skin-like properties, such as stretchability (>140%), elasticity, low modulus (<10 kPa), biocompatibility, and degradability, were prepared through mesoscopic reconstruction engineering to mimic the epidermis and dermis. Our SFBS, incorporating SA and FA sensors, demonstrated a highly sensitive (1.083 kPa -1 ) static pressure sensing performance ( in vitro and in vivo ), showed the ability to sense high-frequency vibrations (50-400 Hz), could discriminate materials and sliding, and could even identify the fine morphological differences between objects. As proof of concept, an SFBS-integrated rehabilitation glove was synthesized, which could help stroke patients regain sensory feedback. In conclusion, this work provides a practical approach for developing skin equivalents, prostheses, and smart robots.

Recent advances in scanning probe microscopy methodology have enabled the measurement of tip-sample interactions with picometer accuracy in all three spatial dimensions, thereby providing a detailed site-specific and distance-dependent picture of the related properties. This paper explores the degree of detail and accuracy that can be achieved in locally quantifying probe-molecule interaction forces and energies for adsorbed molecules. Toward this end, cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc), a promising CO 2 reduction catalyst, was studied on Ag(111) as a model system using low-temperature, ultrahigh vacuum noncontact atomic force microscopy. Data were recorded as a function of distance from the surface, from which detailed three-dimensional maps of the molecule's interaction with the tip for normal and lateral forces as well as the tip-molecule interaction potential were constructed. The data were collected with a CO molecule at the tip apex, which enabled a detailed visualization of the atomic structure. Determination of the tip-substrate interaction as a function of distance allowed isolation of the molecule-tip interactions; when analyzing these in terms of a Lennard-Jones-type potential, the atomically resolved equilibrium interaction energies between the CO tethered to the tip and the CoPc molecule could be recovered. Interaction energies peaked at less than 160 meV, indicating a physisorption interaction. As expected, the interaction was weakest at the aromatic hydrogens around the periphery of the molecule and strongest surrounding the metal center. The interaction, however, did not peak directly above the Co atom but rather in pockets surrounding it.

Microwave thermotherapy (MWT) has shown great potential in cancer treatment due to its deep tissue penetration and minimally invasive nature. However, the poor microwave absorption (MA) properties of the microwave thermal sensitizer in the medical frequency band significantly limit the thermal effect of MWT and then weaken the therapeutic efficacy. In this paper, a Ni-based multilayer heterointerface nanomissile of MOFs-Ni-Ru@COFs (MNRC) with improved MA performance in the desired frequency band via introducing magnetic loss and dielectric loss is developed for MWT-based treatment. The loading of the Ni nanoparticle in MNRC mediates the magnetic loss, introducing the MA in the medical frequency band. The heterointerface formed in the MNRC by nanoengineering induces significant interfacial polarization, increasing the dielectric loss and then enhancing the generated MA performance. Moreover, MNRC with the strong MA performance in the desired frequency range not only enhances the MW thermal effect of MWT but also facilitates the electron and energy transfer, generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) at tumor sites to mediate microwave dynamic therapy (MDT). The strategy of strengthening the MA performance of the sensitizer in the medical frequency band to improve MWT-MDT provides a direction for expanding the clinical application of MWT in tumor treatment.

The photoemission of surface plasmon decay-produced hot electrons is usually of very low efficiencies, hindering the practical utilization of such nonequilibrium charge carriers in harvesting photons with less energy than the semiconductor band gap for more efficient solar energy collection and photodetection. However, it has been demonstrated that the photoemission efficiency of small metal clusters increases as the particle size decreases. Recent studies have also shown that the photoemission efficiency of surface plasmon-yielded hot carriers can be intrinsically improved through proper material construction. In this paper, we report that the photoemission efficiency of hot electrons on the Au nanodisk-cluster complex/TiO 2 interface can be dramatically enhanced under optical nanoantenna-sensitizer design. Such an enhancement is dominantly attributed to three factors. First, the large plasmonic nanodisk antennas provide a significantly enhanced optical near field, which largely increases light absorption in the small Au clusters that are acting as hot electron injection sensitizers. Second, the sub-3 nm size of the Au clusters facilitates the collection of delocalized spreading charges by the semiconductor. Third, the hybrid interface and molecule-like energy level of the Au cluster result in a much longer lifetime of excited electrons. Our results provide a promising approach for the effective harvesting of solar energy with plasmonic antenna-sensitizer complexes.

As a promising alternative to the von Neumann architecture, in-memory computing holds the promise of delivering a high computing capacity while consuming low power. In this paper, we show that the ferroelectric reconfigurable transistor can serve as a versatile logic-in-memory unit that can perform logic operations and data storage concurrently. When functioning as memory, a ferroelectric reconfigurable transistor can implement content-addressable memory (CAM) with a 1-transistor-per-bit density. With the switchable polarity of the ferroelectric reconfigurable transistor, XOR/XNOR-like matching operation in CAM is realized in a single transistor, which can offer a significant improvement in area and energy efficiency compared to conventional CAMs. NAND- and NOR-arrays of CAMs are also demonstrated, which enable multibit matching in a single reading operation. In addition, the NOR array of CAM cells effectively measures the Hamming distance between the input query and the stored entries. When functioning as a logic element, a ferroelectric reconfigurable transistor can be switched between n- and p-type modes. Utilizing the switchable polarity of these ferroelectric Schottky barrier transistors, we demonstrate reconfigurable logic gates with NAND/NOR dual functions, whose input-output mapping can be transformed in real time without changing the layout, and the configuration is nonvolatile.

The development of green, renewable energy conversion and storage systems is an urgent task to address the energy crisis and environmental issues in the future. To achieve high performance, stable, and safe operation of energy conversion and storage systems, energy materials need to be modified and fabricated through rationalization. Among various modification and fabrication strategies, ion beam technology has been widely used to introduce various defects/dopants into energy materials and fabricate various nanostructures, where the structure, composition, and property of prefabricated materials can be further accurately tailored to achieve better performance. In this paper, we review the recent progress in the application of ion beam technology in material modification and fabrication, focusing on nanostructured energy materials for energy conversion and storage including photo- (electro-) water splitting, batteries (solar cells, fuel cells, and metal-ion batteries), supercapacitors, thermoelectrics, and hydrogen storage. This review first provides a brief basic overview of ion beam technology and describes the classification and technological advantages of ion beam technology in the modification and fabrication of materials. Then, modification of energy materials by ion beams is reviewed mainly concerning doping and defect introduction. Fabrication of energy materials is also discussed mainly in terms of heterojunctions, nanoparticles, nanocavities, and other nanostructures. In particular, we emphasize the advantages of ion beam technology in improving the performance of energy materials. Finally, we point out our understanding of challenges and future perspectives in applying ion beam technology for the modification and fabrication of energy materials.

Intrauterine adhesions (IUA) refer to adhesions within the uterine cavity and cervix caused by injuries from uterine surgery. They are a significant cause of female infertility. Exosomes derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play an active role in the treatment of IUA. However, the mechanism by which they reduce fibrosis in the damaged endometrium remains unclear. In this paper, we demonstrate that exosomes derived from placental mesenchymal stem cells (PMSCs) can restore uterine functions and improve the fertility rate of injured animals. This is achieved by promoting cell proliferation, increasing endometrial thickness, and reversing fibrosis. Regarding the molecular mechanism behind these therapeutic effects, we identify three specific miRNAs, namely, miR-125b-5p, miR-30c-5p, and miR-23a-3p, enriched in PMSC-exosomes, as the key players in the treatment of IUA. Specifically, miR-125b-5p/miR-30c-5p and miR-23a-3p inhibit the expression of smad2 and smad3 by targeting their 3'-untranslated regions, resulting in the downregulation of the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)/smad signaling pathway and the reversal of fibrosis. Notably, the safety of PMSC-exosomes in intrauterine treatment was also been confirmed. In conclusion, we illustrate that exosomes derived from PMSCs possess the capability to repair endometrial damage and enhance fertility in injured animals by regulating the TGF-β/smad pathway via miR-125b-5p, miR-30c-5p, and miR-23a-3p. This provides insights into the precision treatment of IUA through exosome-based cell-free therapy.

Many systems have been designed for the detection of SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19. SARS-CoV-2 is readily transmitted, resulting in the rapid spread of disease in human populations. Frequent testing at the point of care (POC) is a key aspect for controlling outbreaks caused by SARS-CoV-2 and other emerging pathogens, as the early identification of infected individuals can then be followed by appropriate measures of isolation or treatment, maximizing the chances of recovery and preventing infectious spread. Diagnostic tools used for high-frequency testing should be inexpensive, provide a rapid diagnostic response without sophisticated equipment, and be amenable to manufacturing on a large scale. The application of these devices should enable large-scale data collection, help control viral transmission, and prevent disease propagation. Here we review functional nanomaterial-based optical and electrochemical biosensors for accessible POC testing for COVID-19. These biosensors incorporate nanomaterials coupled with paper-based analytical devices and other inexpensive substrates, traditional lateral flow technology (antigen and antibody immunoassays), and innovative biosensing methods. We critically discuss the advantages and disadvantages of nanobiosensor-based approaches compared to widely used technologies such as PCR, ELISA, and LAMP. Moreover, we delineate the main technological, (bio)chemical, translational, and regulatory challenges associated with developing functional and reliable biosensors, which have prevented their translation into the clinic. Finally, we highlight how nanobiosensors, given their unique advantages over existing diagnostic tests, may help in future pandemics.

The manual identification and in situ correction of the state of the scanning probe tip is one of the most time-consuming and tedious processes in atomic-resolution scanning probe microscopy. This is due to the random nature of the probe tip on the atomic level, and the requirement for a human operator to compare the probe quality via manual inspection of the topographical images after any change in the probe. Previous attempts to automate the classification of the scanning probe state have focused on the use of machine learning techniques, but the training of these models relies on large, labeled data sets for each surface being studied. These data sets are extremely time-consuming to create and are not always available, especially when considering a new substrate or adsorbate system. In this paper, we show that the problem of tip classification from a topographical image can be solved by using only a single image of the surface along with a small amount of prior knowledge of the appearance of the system in question with a method utilizing template matching (TM). We find that by using these TM methods, comparable accuracy and precision can be achieved to values obtained with the use of machine learning. We demonstrate the efficacy of this technique by training a machine learning-based classifier and comparing the classifications with the TM classifier for two prototypical silicon-based surfaces. We also apply the TM classifier to a number of other systems where supervised machine learning-based training was not possible due to the nature of the training data sets. Finally, the applicability of the TM method to surfaces used in the literature, which have been classified using machine learning-based methods, is considered.

Inspired by natural hierarchical self-assembly of proteins and peptides, amino acids, as the basic building units, have been shown to self-assemble to form highly ordered structures through supramolecular interactions. The fabrication of functional biomaterials comprised of extremely simple biomolecules has gained increasing interest due to the advantages of biocompatibility, easy functionalization, and structural modularity. In particular, amino acid based assemblies have shown attractive physical characteristics for various bionanotechnology applications. Herein, we propose a review paper to summarize the design strategies as well as research advances of amino acid based supramolecular assemblies as smart functional materials. We first briefly introduce bioinspired reductionist design strategies and assembly mechanism for amino acid based molecular assembly materials through noncovalent interactions in condensed states, including self-assembly, metal ion mediated coordination assembly, and coassembly. In the following part, we provide an overview of the properties and functions of amino acid based materials toward applications in nanotechnology and biomedicine. Finally, we give an overview of the remaining challenges and future perspectives on the fabrication of amino acid based supramolecular biomaterials with desired properties. We believe that this review will promote the prosperous development of innovative bioinspired functional materials formed by minimalistic building blocks.

This paper presents a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation into the antiviral properties of nanostructured surfaces and explains the underlying virucidal mechanism. We used reactive ion etching to fabricate silicon (Si) surfaces featuring an array of sharp nanospikes with an approximate tip diameter of 2 nm and a height of 290 nm. The nanospike surfaces exhibited a 1.5 log reduction in infectivity of human parainfluenza virus type 3 (hPIV-3) after 6 h, a substantially enhanced efficiency, compared to that of smooth Si. Theoretical modeling of the virus-nanospike interactions determined the virucidal action of the nanostructured substrata to be associated with the ability of the sharp nanofeatures to effectively penetrate the viral envelope, resulting in the loss of viral infectivity. Our research highlights the significance of the potential application of nanostructured surfaces in combating the spread of viruses and bacteria. Notably, our study provides valuable insights into the design and optimization of antiviral surfaces with a particular emphasis on the crucial role played by sharp nanofeatures in maximizing their effectiveness.
