The estimation of changes in the diversity and composition of insect communities in transmission areas belonging to different life zones, can indicate differential patterns in transmission and associated reservoir fauna, as well as different epidemiological risk scenarios. An example is leishmaniasis, a parasitosis related to the presence of phlebotomine sandflies of the Lutzomyia genus, which in Córdoba (Colombia) presents transmission areas for cutaneous and visceral forms of leishmaniasis, framed in different life zones - Holdridge (Bs-T, Bh-T, among others). The present study aims to estimate the diversity of entomological inventories carried out in different areas with presence of potential leishmaniasis vectors, in 17 localities of ten municipalities of the department of Córdoba, between May 2015 and November 2016. A total of 1695 phlebotomine sandflies represented in 13 species of the genus Lutzomyia were collected. The most abundant species for the department of Córdoba are Lutzomyia evansi and Lutzomyia gomezi, with 30.44 % and 29.62 %, respectively. The presence of Lutzomyia trapidoi is reported for the first time for the territory of Córdoba. With this study, the knowledge of the diversity of the genus Lutzomyia in terms of abundance distribution, true diversities and species composition in active zones of the department of Córdoba is expanded. One of the most important leishmaniasis foci in Colombia is Los Montes de María, Department of Bolívar, specifically in El Carmen de Bolívar. To date, 19 species of Lutzomyia have been recognized in this department, some with antecedents as vectors of Leishmania spp. This note reports the abundance and diversity of the phlebotomine sandflies fauna in the rural area of El Carmen de Bolívar. Through the use of CDC traps, 1327 females of the genus Lutzomyia were collected between January to November 2018: Lu. evansi (81 %), Lu. panamensis (15.5 %), Lu. gomezi (2.9 %), Lu. dubitans (0.15 %), Lu. aclydifera (0.07 %), Lu. c. cayennensis (0.07 %), Lu. rangeliana (0.07 %) and Lu. serrana (0.07 %). The highest abundance of sandflies occurred in November and the lowest in April, which is consistent with the rainy and dry months, respectively; while in January there was the greatest diversity. In this research, stands out Lu. evansi, Lu. panamensis and Lu. gomezi for their antecedents as vectors of Leishmania in the Department of Bolívar and other regions of the country. We reported the species Lu. aclydifera for the first time for the Caribbean region, hence, this species should be monitored given its vector capacity for Leishmania. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Predator species under field conditions can face different and variable densities of prey species. This work evaluated the functional response of the neotropical lady beetle Eriopis connexa (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) subjected to different densities of the aphids Brevicoryne brassicae and Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae). Thus, predation rates were analyzed of fourth-instar larvae and one-day old adults of the lady beetle preying upon the aphids at constant densities of 20, 40, 50, 60, and 70 aphids with 15 repetitions per density. The aphids were offered on 5 cm leaf discs of each plant host. The handling times and attack rates were 0.03 h-1 and 0.27 h-1 for larvae and 0.03 h-1 and 0.15 h-1 for adults fed B. brassicae and 0.59 h-1 and 0.35 h-1 for larvae and 0.70 h-1 and 0.95 h-1 for adults fed A. craccivora, respectively. Both larva and adult lady beetles increased predation rate as a function of prey density offered, with an estimated maximum number of prey consumed of 30.3 and 31.6 B. brassicae and 36.3 and 34.6 of A. craccivora by larva and adult lady beetles at the highest prey density, respectively. Dentro del género Lutzomyiaalgunas especies son vectores de la enfermedad llamada leishmaniasis, la cual tiene implicaciones en la salud pública, desarrollando diferentes manifestaciones clínicas como leishmaniasis cutánea, visceral y mucocutánea que afectan altamente al ser humano. El objetivo de este estudio fuerealizar un inventario de las especies del género Lutzomyia presentes en seis zonas del departamento del Atlántico. Se implementaron 3 técnicas de capturas tradicionales: trampas CDC entre 18:00-06:00, trampa Shannon entre 19:00-22:00 y búsqueda activa de flebotomíneos con aspiradores bucales en troncos, bases de árboles y otros sitios entre 09:00-11:00 y 16:00-17:30, en seis municipios del departamento del Atlántico, Colombia. Se capturaron diez especies flebotomíneas y se reporta por vez primera para el departamento del Atlántico el hallazgo de Lutzomyia longipalpis y Lutzomyia atroclavata. De las diez especies capturadas, Lutzomyia longipalpistiene antecedentes como vector de Leishmania infantumen Colombia y en otras regiones de Latinoamérica, además es considerada el principal vector de leishmaniasis visceral en las Américas. La especie más abundante y con mayor distribución espacial fue Lu. evansi, principal vector de leishmaniasis visceral en la región Caribe. En conclusión,la riqueza de la fauna flebotomínea del departamento de Atlántico se actualiza a doce especies, con el primer registro de Lu. longipalpisy Lu. atroclavata. También se reporta la fauna flebotomínea por primera vez en localidades del departamento de Atlántico como Campeche, Puerto Colombia, Luruaco, Ponedera y Campo de la Cruz.

The genus Lutzomyia has a variety of species, where some are vectors of the disease called leishmaniasis which has implications for public health developing different clinical manifestations that highly affect humans such as cutaneous, visceral and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. The aim of the study was to update the registry of the Lutzomyia species that are present in six areas of the Atlántico department. Three traditional capture techniques were implemented, with CDC traps implemented from 18:00 to 6:00 o'clock, Shannon traps from 19:00 to 10:00 and active search with mouth aspirators on trunks, tree bases and other rest sites from 09:00 to 11:00 and 16:00 to 17:30, in six municipalities of the Atlántico department, Colombia. Ten phlebotomine species were captured during the present work, from which the finding of Lutzomyia longipalpis and Lutzomyia atroclavata are reported for the first time at the Atlántico department. From the ten species captured, Lutzomyia longipalpis has antecedents as a vector of Leishmania infantum in Colombia and other regions of Latin America. The most abundant species with the greatest spatial distribution was Lu. evansi, which is the main vector of visceral leishmaniasis in the Caribbean region. In conclusion, the richness of phlebotomineal fauna of the department of Atlántico is updated to twelve species, with the first record of Lu. longipalpis and Lu. atroclavata. Phlebotomy fauna is also reported for the first time in localities of the department of Atlántico such as Campeche, Puerto Colombia, Luruaco, Ponedera and Campo de la Cruz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Se estudió la composición faunística de los escarabajos coprófagos en cuatro sitios de muestreo en la zona norte de la Serranía de La Lindosa en el Departamento del Guaviare, evaluando la diversidad y la estructura de los ensamblajes que se compararon con trabajos realizados en otras zonas de la Guyana biogeográfica. Los resultados muestran valores bajos en la diversidad, propios de zonas con baja disponibilidad de recursos y gran exigencia climática y el predominio de especies de hábito de nidificación cavadora sobre especies residentes y rodadoras. La composición de la fauna presenta gran número de especies comunes con otras áreas de la región, similares a las afinidades encontradas para otros taxones que apoyan los nexos de estas serranías colombianas con los escudos guyanés y brasileño.

Faunal composition of the coprophagous beetles was studied in four sampling sites in the northern area from the Serranía de La Lindosa in Guaviare, testing diversity values and structure of the assemblages that were compared with other research done in any other areas of Biogeographical Guyana. The results showed low diversity values, typical of areas with low availability of resources and extreme climatic conditions and showed the predominance of species with nesting digging habit over resident and rolling species. The fauna composition presents a large number of common species with any other areas of the region, as occur as other affinities found for other taxa that support the links of these Colombian mountains to the Guyanese and Brazilian shields. El estudio tuvo como objeto iniciar la investigación de los insectos asociados a fenómenos dedescomposición en una zona alta, específicamente en el municipio de Mosquera (Cundina-marca). Para lograrlo se usó como biomodelo cerdo blanco (Sus scrofa) por su similitud conlos humanos, éste se sacrificó y se dejó al aire libre durante ocho meses. El proceso de des-composición se dividió en cinco fases: fresco (2 días), hinchado (13 días), descomposiciónactiva (15 días), descomposición avanzada (31 días) y restos secos (160 días). Durante esteperiodo se recogieron 3.539 individuos, el 86.69% pertenecientes a Diptera y el 8.36% aColeoptera. Las familias más numerosas de Diptera fueron Muscidae (62.08%) y Calliphoridae(14.44%), mientras que en Coleoptera fueron Silphidae (68.58%) y Staphylinidae (14.86%).Se pudo observar la participación de los géneros Calliphora, Paralucilia y Chloroprocta, estosgéneros no aparecen en zonas bajas y podrían ser propios de zonas altas. No se presentarongrupos exclusivos para cada fase del proceso, aunque la presencia y abundancia de Diptera fuemayor al inicio de la descomposición, mientras que Coleoptera (exceptuando Silphidae) fuemás abundante y activo al final del proceso. La lluvia ocasionó una "regresión" en la sucesiónde insectos. El presente trabajo no constituye una herramienta de carácter legal pero es elprimer trabajo sobre entomología forense realizado en la Sabana de Bogotá y es base paratrabajos posteriores en la zona.

El insecto de la subfamilia Reduviidae, Triatoma dimidiata, es actualmente en Colombia elsegundo vector más importantes en la transmisión de la enfermedad de Chagas luego de laespecie Rhodnius prolixusquien se halla principalmente en viviendas humanas. Este insecto puedehabitar viviendas rústicas, peridomicilios o sitios aledaños a las viviendas o ambientes silvestres,insectos de los cuales se conoce poco sobre su capacidad vectorial y de infestación. Para es-tudiar algunas aspectos de la biología del insecto, se estudiaron 96 individuos a partir de treshembras del ambiente silvestre para el estudio del ciclo de vida, también se estudió la fecun-didad y fertilidad de las mismas. Se analizó la resistencia al ayuno de 10 insectos de cada unode los estadíos ninfales y los patrones de alimentación y deyección para otros 30 insectos decada estadío. Finalmente se evaluaron 80 individuos de los grupos: domicilio, peridomicilio ysilvestre mediante 10 sistemas isoenzimáticos, con el ánimo de canalizar su filogenia Se obtuvouna fertilidad en las hembras de hasta 97.1%, y una fecundidad máxima de hasta 630 huevospor hembra. El ciclo de vida completo tardó en promedio 356.7 días para las hembras y 368.1para los machos. La resistencia al ayuno para el primer estadío obtuvo un mínimo 18 días y unmáximo 66 días de supervivencia; para el segundo estadío un mínimo 110 días y un máximo de174 días y para el tercer estadío el estudio llegó hasta 174 días como mínimo. El primer estadíoestuvo en capacidad de ingerir mayor cantidad de sangre con respecto a los demás, consu-miendo hasta 12.35 veces su peso inicial. Se observó que el 68% de los individuos defecarondurante e inmediatamente luego de abandonar la fuente de alimento, tardándose en promediotodos los estadíos 42.9 minutos. Genéticamente los tres grupos se comportan como si fuesenuna sola población al no encontrarse distancias altas entre ellos. Se observó una reducciónnotable de los individuos heterocigotos, con valores altos del FST de 0.3139 entre los tresgrupos; un valor Nm de 1.47 para los grupos domicilio y peridomicilio, indicando la migraciónde al menos un individuo por generación y unas distancias de 0.033 entre los grupos domicilioy peridomicilio y de 0.115 entre estos y el grupo silvestre. Los resultados difieren ligeramentede Zeledón et al. (1970) en cuanto a los patrones de alimentación, deyección y ciclo de vida.Los individuos de este estudio tardan más tiempo en ingerir sangre, son más voraces e interrumpen su alimentación mayor número de veces. Los insectos de los grupos evaluados se estaríancomportando como si fuesen una sola población con un alto riesgo de infestación dadas suscaracterísticas biológicas para establecerse y reproducirse en un ambiente dado, y una alta ca-pacidad vectorial por el alto porcentaje de individuos que defeca durante la alimentación,porque se alimentan con gran voracidad y encuentran con facilidad la fuente de alimento.

In this work we contribute to the knowledge of the Colombian Chironomid, studying the pupalexuviae found in the river Teusacá particularly, developing illustrated keys and increasing thereference collection, facilitating in this way the research activities in the field as well as inlaboratory. The following species identify the genera. The taxonomic description is developedanalyzing the more important morphologically characteristic of the pupal exuviae (cephalothoraxand abdomen), identification guide and fundamental part of the keys. 626 pupal exuviae wereidentified and it was determined that the chironomid community for the study area in the riverTeusacá, is compounded for 15 genera belonging to 3 subfamilies: Orthocladiinae(9 genera),Chironominae(4 genera) and Tanypodinae(2 genera). The genera with more representatives in the study area were Corynoneura, Parakiefferiellaand Thiennemaniella, making evident the dominanceof the subfamily Orthocladiinaein the three sampling, corroborating the condition of HighMountain of this river. The abundance of the genera Corynoneura, Parakiefferiella, Thiennemaniella,Cricotopus, Orthocladius, Parametriocnemusand Polypedilum, can corroborate their wide distributiononce again in the world environment. During the sampling times they evidence the biggestquantity in individuals, this showing their capacity of adaptation and survival, due to theantropogenic activity that modifies the conditions of the areas sampled; it was confirmed thatduring the rainy periods the population decrease due to the flow increase.
