The title complex [systematic name: 1-(4-bromo­benzyl)pyridinium bis­(1,2-dicyano­ethyl­ene-1,2-dithiolato)­cuprate(III)], (C12H11BrN)[Cu(C4N2S2)2], is isostructural with 1-(4-bromo­benz­yl)pyridinium bis­(maleonitrile­dithiol­ato)nickelate(III) [Ren, Meng, Song, Hu, Lu & Chen (2002). In the title salt (C7H11N2)2[Cu(C4N2S2)2], the Cu2+ ion is coordinated by four S atoms of two 1,2-dicyano­ethene-1,2-dithiol­ate (or maleonitrile­dithiol­ate, mnt2−) ligands in an approximate square-planar geometry. The Cu atom is located on an inversion centre. Strong hydrogen-bonding inter­actions between the pyridinium proton and the CN groups of the mnt2− ligand link anions and cations into a one-dimensional chain structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The title compound, (C12H11BrN)[Pt(C4N2S2)2], is a new polymorphic modification, viz. the β-phase; the α-phase has been published recently [Ren et al. (2004). Inorg. Chem. 43, 2569–2576]. In the β-phase, the anions and cations form segregated columnar stacks along the a axis, which is similar to the α-phase. Compared with the α-phase, the significant structural differences in the β-phase relate to the mol­ecular conformation of the cation and the stacking architecture of both anions and cations.
