Summary: The sera of 766 diabetics and 730 blood donors have been tested for Australia surface antigen (HBsAg). Subjects with a history of an episode of jaundice were excluded from both groups. The two groups did not differ as to the frequency with which HBsAg was found: 1.64% in blood donors, 1.56% in diabetics.

Summary: Osmotic resistance of leukocytes has been studied with the Storti-Pederzini method in 30 young healthy subjects and in 30 diabetics of the juvenile insulin-dependent type with variable duration of the disease and variable degrees of metabolic control. Reduced osmotic resistance, above all in the polymorphonuclear cells, has been found in diabetics. This finding did not appear to correlate with the duration of diabetes or with blood glucose level. This reduced osmotic resistance of polymorphonuclear leukocytes of diabetic patients might contribute to the deficiency in leukocyte migration and phagocytosis observed by some authors in diabetics.

Summary: Glucose tolerance is considered to decrease with ageing. In order to assess the role of insulin and growth hormone (GH) in this process, insulin and GH response to arginine infusion were evaluated in 42 subjects with a normal glucose tolerance test, divided according to age into three groups (20–39, 40–59 and 60–80 years). In 6 subjects of each age group, insulin response to oral glucose was also evaluated. Blood glucose levels following the two stimuli were higher in older subjects. Insulin response tended towards higher values in older subjects. GH secretion did not vary in the three age groups. These data indicate that the deterioration of glucose tolerance is not due to diminished insulin secretion or to enhanced GH secretion. The cause of the higher glucose levels in response to arginine in the elderly remains to clarified.

Summary: A case of diabetic ketoacidosis with onset a few days after the start of treatment with a sequential estrogen-progestogen combination is reported. Up to the onset of symptoms, the patient had only taken the estrogen (mestranol). Ketoacidosis presented itself with symptoms of appendicitis and peritonitis; at surgery only hyperemia of the peritoneum was observed.

Summary: The authors studied the relationship between age, year of onset of the disease and sex in 1,428 diabetic subjects. The whole population of the province of La Spezia was used for comparison. As for the M/F ratio, differences of homogeneousness were not observed between the diabetics examined and the population of the province. When the series was subdivided according to the year in which diabetes was diagnosed, it was found that from the five-year period 1950–1954 to the five-year period 1965–1969 the M/F ratio had changed from 0.47 to 0.96. Statistically, this is equivalent to an exponential function.

Riassunto Vengono presentati i risultati ottenuti in 72 diabetici con una nuova sulfanilurea ipoglicemizzante, la glibenclamide. Nel corso di un'esperimentazione durata due anni il farmaco è parso avere un'elevata attività ipoglicemizzante ed esser privo di ogni tossicità acuta e cronica.

Riassunto In 176 soggetti anziani sani, di età superiore ai 60 anni e, per confronto, in 86 soggetti sani di età al di sotto dei 40 anni, sono stati studiati iltest di tolleranza al glucosio per via venosa, iltest alla tolbutamide, iltest di sensibilità all'insulina e l'attività insulinosimile nel siero. Negli anziani è stata osservata una diminuzione dell'assimilazione del glucosio, della risposta alla tolbutamide e della sensibilità all'insulina. L'attività insulinosimile del siero degli anziani è apparsa minore che nei soggetti giovani sia a digiuno, che dopo stimolo glucidico.

Riassunto Viene descritto un caso di atassia di Friedreich associata con diabete mellito occorso in una ragazza di 15 anni. La sintomatologia atassica era insorta a 14 mesi, mentre il diabete ebbe inizio all'età di 14 anni. Dai dati clinici e da quanto viene riferito dalla letteratura medica gli AA. traggono la conclusione che l'associazione delle due malattie abbia una base genetica.

Riassunto Viene descritto un caso di grave poliradicoloneurite diabetica che non aveva tratto alcun miglioramento da un lungo trattamento con vitamina B1 e B12 ad alti dosaggi. Esso giunse a guarigione somministrando insulina direttamente nello speco vertebrale.

Riassunto Viene descritto un caso di tentato suicidio con glibenclamide (250 mg, pari a circa 35 mg/kg) in una donna non diabetica di 16 anni. Dopo rapido risveglio dal coma, permase tendenza spontanea all'ipoglicemia per circa 4 giorni. Dopo 112 h, una prova di carico orale con glucosio metteva in evidenza ridotta tolleranza glicidica e scarsa risposta insulinemica. Dopo 17 giorni, un nuovo test al glucosio dimostrava notevole incremento insulinemico con modeste variazioni glicemiche, come se le cellule B fossero rimaste iperreattive allo stimolo glicidico.
