- Abstract
Variable head sizes of paper roll will influence the stability of paper feeding device and hence the printing quality. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the printing quality by improving the stability of paper feeding device based on dynamic analysis on the phenomenon of variable head sizes of paper roll. It is found through dynamic analysis that the effect of variable head sizes on the support force of bearings is nearly five times that of the case when such effect does not exist. Vibration performance analysis of paper feeding device using finite element analysis obtains the natural frequencies of the first 6 orders for paper carriage and their dominant vibrational modes. This provides theoretical basis for the improvement of paper feeding device.

- Abstract
Composite soils have been extensively used in civil engineering applications, especially in slopes, embankment dam and landfills. This paper aims to investigate effect of paper reinforcement inclusion on compaction characteristic of composite soil (i.e. clay composite). A series of laboratory tests performed to assess reinforcement effect on optimum water content and maximum dry unit weight of composite soils. Clay was selected as soil part of the composite and paper was used as reinforcement. The paper reinforcement parameters differed from one test to another, as paper length varied from 15 mm to 40mm and paper content were selected as 5% and 10%. For each test, compaction curved derived and the results were compared. The results proved that inclusion of paper affected compaction behaviour of samples so that increasing in paper content and length caused increasing in Optimum Moisture Content (OMC) and slightly decreased maximum dry unit weight.

- Abstract
Offset paper properties have great influence on the quality of print matter. Eleven offset paper samples were printed by IGT printability tester, then the density and L*a*b values of printed samples were measured. The relationship between paper properties and optical density or color gamut of paper printed was studied. The results show that main density increases with the increased ink quantity before the main density reaches saturation, the saturation density becomes greater with increased ink absorbency. When the smoothness is larger, lower ink quantity is needed for reaching saturation density, and larger color gamut is obtained. This study will provide references for the paper making and printing enterprises.

Yang, Zhi Yuan, Shi, Hai Zhen, and Tang, Yan Jun
- Abstract
In this paper, Old Corrugated Container (OCC) was used as the raw material for making paper. The layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly process of creating highly structured thin films was adopted to modify the surface of OCC fibres. Poly dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) have been used to build up polyelectrolyte multilayers on OCC fibres under a certain condition. Zeta potential analyzer was used to monitor the dynamic adsorption of PDADMAC and HEC with different amount on OCC fibers. Strength measurements of the sheets including tensile index and bursting index were also determined, showing a significant improvement in physical strength with the increase of adsorbed layer number. Compared with not being processed sheets, tensile index and bursting index of sheets from treated fibre with polyelectrolyte multilayers were raised by 36.65% and 49.50%, respectively. Furthermore, filtration time analysis of OCC fibre suspension showed that the built up of PDADMAC and HEC on OCC fibres could improve the fiber-fiber joint strength of joints from polymer-treated fibers, which made the filtration time decline from 30 s to 10.6 s. In addition, SEM was introduced to observe the morphology of the PDADMAC/HEC multilayers. The images revealed that the surface of OCC fibres structured a film like plastic, which could be ascribed to the adsorption layer of polyelectrolyte.

- Abstract
The paper pulp compression molding material is one of the most commonly used materials in packing industry. Their mechanical properties attract attentions from professional visitors and researchers. It is a difficult work to test the mechanical properties as the paper pulps are thin, anisotropic and sometimes wet. To spray ink spots with the surface of the specimens is not allowed either. The digit image frequency correlation method (DIFC) is presented in the paper, the information carrier of the displacement is the nature texture on the tested surface. Image acquiring and analysis are accomplished by the CCD camera and computer. From the displacement field strain distributions were obtained and the mechanical properties of the paper pulp compression molding material were evaluated. The test system is simple and the sensitivity is adjustable. DIFC is approved a suitable test method for paper pulp compression molding material.

- Abstract
In is paper precipitated silica is used in coated paper coating. It shows that the effect of different silica on properties of pigment dispersion is different. The dosage of silica influences the properties of pigment dispersion too. The viscosity of coating is higher than the corresponding pigment dispersion. The higher the viscosity of pigment dispersion is, the higher the corresponding viscosity of coating is. The more the dosage of silica is and the littler the particle size of silica is, the larger water retention value of coating is. When the precipitated silica is used in coated paper coating, the viscosity of coating is increasing. If precipitated silica coat paper, the whiteness of coated paper increases by 1%-2%

- Abstract
This study shows a optimization usage of SA and PAE on enhancing both wet and dry strength of paper. The influence of the dosage of PAE and the viscosity of SA on the binary system for strengthening of paper have been studied and compared with paper which use PAE alone as a wet strength additive. A optimization ratio of PAE/SA was obtained, and with this ratio unchanged the amount of PAE/SA and initial of pH of the pulp has been tested. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used as a assistant method to observe those influence. The results showes that PAE/SA binary strengthening system for paper has a better property than that of PAE alone as a wet strength additive. The optimal viscosity of SA is about 350 mPa•S and the optimal ratio of PAE and SA is 3:2 and the addition of PAE and SA are 0.75% and 0.5% respectively. SEM analyses confirm that the film-forming property of PAE is accelerated by SA and it is also noticeable that the PAE/SA film can stick to the suface of fibres uniformly in the aqueous pulp slurry environment. The reaserch on the effects of the slurries at different pH to the wet and dry tensile strength prove that PAE/SA strength system is more suitable for neutral and alkaline papermaking conditions.

- Abstract
The physical structure and chemical properties of coating layer have an important influence on transferring and setting of the printing ink. In this study, the effect of pigment on coating layer structure and surface properties was investigated. The surface topography was explored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The findings indicated that the pigment affected the pore size, depth and distribution of the coated paper surface. The conclusions were drawn that coating could improve coating surface topography and calcium carbonate pigment compared with kaolin pigment was not good to the paper surface properties, which resulted in high roughness, low paper gloss, high ink absorption and low paper surface efficiency.

- Abstract
n this paper, the effect of the charge of hydrophilic and lipophilic nanosized TiO
2 on the optical properties and printability of coated paper was investigated. The parameters including brightness, opacity, surface strength and sizing degree were used to evaluate the optical properties and printability of coated paper. The effects of hydrophilic and lipophilic TiO2 on the properties of coated paper were discussed. It was shown that the optical properties and printability of coated paper increase persistently with the change of nanosized TiO2 charged from 5% to 15%. Once the charge of nanosized TiO2 was over 15%, the main properties of coated paper took on a downward tendency. The properties of coated paper were related to the surface properties of nanosized TiO2 samples. It was found that the lipophilicity of nanosized TiO2 sample played a more important role in the improvement of the coated paper properties, which was believed to be based on the fact that lipophilic nanosized TiO2 could be well compatible with the binders used in the paper coating.- Published
