Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) has become an invaluable core technique in numerous geodetic applications. SLR measurements to passive spherical satellites essentially contribute to the determination of geocenter coordinates and global scale in the International Terrestrial Reference Frame (ITRF) realizations. In addition, SLR measurements to active satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) are up to now mostly used for an independent validation of orbit solutions, usually derived by microwave tracking techniques based on Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) or Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS). This allows for the analysis of systematic orbit errors (e.g., originating from poorly known non-gravitational perturbations or sensor offsets) not only in the radial direction (key to satellite altimetry missions), but in three dimensions. Major obstacles to reach the millimeter accuracy and stability goals of 0.1 mm / y (at decadal time scales) of the Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) are station-satellite measurement biases and on-ground/board coordinate offsets. Among the observatories of the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS) a large diversity of measurement qualities exists, and the calibration of station-dependent errors is now necessary to further exploit SLR data for present and future climate-driven needs. We demonstrate that the analysis of SLR data to active LEO satellites equipped with DORIS or GNSS receivers is a promising means to characterize SLR biases and their stability. Using two independent selections of Earth observation missions in LEOs (consisting of six altimetry, three magnetic field and two gravity field satellites) with three different analysis software packages (Bernese, ZOOM, Napeos), we estimate SLR range biases for all involved tracking stations on a yearly basis. We find that for many of the stations independently estimated sets of biases agree on a few-mm level and that the inclusion of satellites from multiple missions allows rendering the bias estimation more robust and in particular less prone to geographically correlated orbit errors. This shows that microwave-derived orbits of active LEO satellites, nowadays of very high quality due to numerous advances in modeling and analysis techniques, can serve as interesting sources for SLR station calibration in demanding climate applications. The Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers equipped on the Haiyang-2D (HY-2D) satellite is capable of tracking the signals of both the third generation of BeiDou satellite navigation System (BDS-3) and the Global Positioning System (GPS), which make it feasible to assess the performance of real-time orbit determination (RTOD) for the HY-2D using onboard GNSS observations. In this study, the achievable accuracy and convergence time of RTOD for the HY-2D using onboard BDS-3 and GPS observations are analyzed. Benefiting from the binary-offset-carrier (BOC) modulation, the BDS-3 C1X signal includes less noise than the GPS C1C signal, which has the same signal frequency and chipping rate. The root mean squares (RMS) of the noises of C1X and C1C code measurements are 0.579 m and 1.636 m, respectively. Thanks to a ten-times higher chipping rate, the code measurements of BDS-3 C5P, GPS C1W and C2W are less noisy. The RMS of code noises of BDS-3 C5P, GPS C1W, and C2W are 0.044 m, 0.386 m, and 0.272 m, respectively. For the HY-2D orbit, the three-dimensional (3D) and radial accuracies can reach 31.8 cm and 7.5 cm with only BDS-3 observations, around 50 % better than the corresponding accuracies with GPS. Better performance of the BDS-3 in RTOD for the HY-2D is attributed to the high quality of its broadcast ephemeris. When random parameters are used to absorb ephemeris errors, substantial improvement is seen in the accuracy of HY-2D orbit with either BDS-3 or GPS. The 3D RMS of HY-2D orbit errors with BDS-3 and GPS are enhanced to 23.1 cm and 33.6 cm, and the RMS of the radial components are improved to 6.1 cm and 13.3 cm, respectively. The convergence time is 41.6 and 75.5 min for the RTOD with BDS-3 and GPS, while it is reduced to 39.2 and 27.4 min after the broadcast ephemeris errors are absorbed by random parameters. Overall, the achievable accuracy of RTOD with BDS-3 reaches decimeter level, which is even better than that with GPS, making real-time navigation using onboard BDS-3 observations a feasible choice for future remote sensing missions. We study the effects of space weather on the ionosphere and low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites’ orbital trajectory in equatorial, low- and mid-latitude (EQL, LLT and MLT) regions during (and around) the notable storms of October/November, 2003. We briefly review space weather effects on the thermosphere and ionosphere to demonstrate that such effects are also latitude-dependent and well established. Following the review we simulate the trend in variation of satellite’s orbital radius ( r ), mean height ( h ) and orbit decay rate ( ODR ) during 15 October–14 November 2003 in EQL, LLT and MLT. Nominal atmospheric drag on LEO satellite is usually enhanced by space weather or solar-induced variations in thermospheric temperature and density profile. To separate nominal orbit decay from solar-induced accelerated orbit decay, we compute r , h and ODR in three regimes viz. (i) excluding solar indices (or effect), where r = r 0 , h = h 0 and ODR = ODR 0 (ii) with mean value of solar indices for the interval, where r = r m , h = h m and ODR = ODR m and (iii) with actual daily values of solar indices for the interval ( r , h and ODR ). For a typical LEO satellite at h  = 450 km, we show that the total decay in r during the period is about 4.20 km, 3.90 km and 3.20 km in EQL, LLT and MLT respectively; the respective nominal decay ( r 0 ) is 0.40 km, 0.34 km and 0.22 km, while solar-induced orbital decay ( r m ) is about 3.80 km, 3.55 km and 2.95 km. h also varied in like manner. The respective nominal ODR 0 is about 13.5 m/day, 11.2 m/day and 7.2 m/day, while solar-induced ODR m is about 124.3 m/day, 116.9 m/day and 97.3 m/day. We also show that severe geomagnetic storms can increase ODR by up to 117% (from daily mean value). However, the extent of space weather effects on LEO Satellite’s trajectory significantly depends on the ballistic co-efficient and orbit of the satellite, and phase of solar cycles, intensity and duration of driving (or influencing) solar event. Abstract: In this paper we present the results of the comparison of the retrieved electron density profiles of the Ionospheric Radio Occultation (IRO) experiment on board CHAMP (CHAllenging Minisatellite Payload), with the ground ionosonde profiles for the Polar Regions. IRO retrieved electron density profiles from CHAMP are compared with Canadian Advanced Digital Ionosonde (CADI) measurements at two vertical sounding stations well within the Polar Cap, Eureka (geog. 80°13′ N; 86°11′ W) and Resolute Bay (geog. 74°41′ N; 94°54′ W). We compared the ionospheric parameters such as the peak electron density of the F-layer (NmF2) and the peak height of the F-layer (hmF2) for a 3-year period, 2004–2006. CHAMP derived NmF2 shows reasonable agreement with the ionosonde retrieved NmF2 for both the stations (0.76 and 0.71 correlation coefficient, for Eureka and Resolute Bay, respectively) whereas the hmF2 agreement is not that acceptable (0.25 and 0.37 correlation coefficient, respectively). The hmF2 from vertical sounding showed less spread than the CHAMP hmF2. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
