In the Tillaberi region of Niger, 20 soldiers and one civilian were killed in an ambush on June 25th. The soldiers were attacked by a heavily armed coalition of assailants while carrying out a security sweep near Tassia village. The region has been a center of conflict, with rebels linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group waging an insurgency for almost a decade. Niger's army responded to the attack by killing over 100 terrorists in air and ground operations. The country has faced an upsurge in militant attacks since a coup in July 2023, mainly targeting defense and security forces in the Tillaberi region. Additionally, scores of Boko Haram jihadists and their relatives surrendered to the Mixed Multinational Force in Niger and Cameroon, and IS claimed responsibility for a prison break in the Tillaberi region.
