On 26 October 2009 Alex Ngong Akok Akol, a young man originally from Sudan, was murdered by a group of Australian youths. This paper will explore the responses of members of the Mading Aweil community of Dinka from Southern Sudan following Alex's murder. Through analysing conversations and experiences in the community in the days following Alex's death, I will consider how his murder impacted on senses of belonging for members of the Sudanese community living in Adelaide. I will argue that for members of the Sudanese community, Alex's murder and subsequent reports by the media, emphasised and exacerbated the lack of belonging many of them already felt in Australia. In addition, incidents in the community at this time called into question not only senses of belonging within the broader Australian community, but also within Sudanese subcommunity groups. Antjie Krog's autobiographical novel A change of tongue presents a diversified conglomerate of different genres and parts. One of the major thematic focal points is the evident aim of the I-narrator/protagonist to reconstitute her identity as a white Afrikaans woman so as to establish her claim to belong, as a 'post-white' African, to the land and its aboriginal people. This paper investigates this intent through an analysis of the depiction of the physicality of the novel's main figures, and especially that of the I-narrator. This analysis, in turn, reveals a significant tendency towards mythicising, which highlights some of the problematic of the text, along with the inner contradictions inherent in the I-narrator's desire to be assimilated unquestionably and legitimately into the new socio-political context of her country. It will be shown that her attempt to re-write her personal white identity into a native African one leads to the individualistic and subjective misrepresentation of an established historical reality and context by mythicising it. This essay is a corrective to disciplinary narratives of the story of democracy. To counter this story, it proposes the vision and imaginaries of democracy enunciated in a particular strand of anticolonial and postcolonial thought in Africa. The essay aims to highlight the precepts, predicates, and norms underlying this anticolonial democratic project which was constructed against a postwar liberal democratic project perceived then to be predicated on an imperial reason.
