This paper explores Grade R teacher expressions of themselves as teachers of numeracy, and as teachers working in the transition phase of schooling, after their participation in a research-informed numeracy-focused professional development (PD) intervention. The Early Number Fun (ENF) programme had 33 teachers from 17 Eastern Cape schools participating monthly over 18 months. Inclusion of Grade R to schooling is relatively new following policy changes in Early Childhood Development. In-service support tends to be subsumed within the Foundation Phase without attention to the specialised nature of Grade R that emphasises learning through play. ENF focused on the development of specialised teacher knowledge to support the development of early number sense through play, particularly with conceptual manipulatives. Data sources include three pre-, during, and post-PD questionnaires. Findings reveal that participation in ENF, and access to multiple research informed numeracy resources, supported teachers in their relationship with numeracy and the teaching thereof. Questionnaire responses indicate greater confidence in themselves as knowledgeable teachers of numeracy and that belonging to the ENF community supported navigation of positive professional identities within the mixed messages of policy. The findings contribute to the community-supported field of Grade R PD research and early numeracy teaching and learning. Education institutions globally, are increasingly driven to integrate innovative technologies in teaching spaces. While many studies have been conducted on e-learning, blended learning and m-learning, only a few studies have concentrated on the STEM preservice teachers' e-readiness for using online multimodal teaching methods in developing economic contexts. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the interplay of experiences, attitudes and technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) self-efficacy as they influence STEM preservice teachers' e-readiness for implementing online multimodal teaching. This paper employed a descriptive online survey method and a stratified random sampling technique to collect data from 204 final-year STEM preservice teachers on a teacher training programme in South Africa. Statistical tools of confirmatory factor analysis, exploratory factor analysis, bivariate and correlation analysis were employed on the collected data. The results revealed that STEM preservice teachers have positive attitudes towards multimodal online learning. However, STEM preservice teachers do not feel confident in using multimodal online resources in their teaching. In addition, this paper found that experiences of online multimodal teaching impacted on preservice teachers' attitudes and resultantly, STEM preservice teachers' TPACK self-efficacy. The results and discussions inform the design for improvement in online multimodal teaching methods e-readiness and usage by preservice teachers. Recommendations include resource support, alignment of teacher training curricula and development of practicum practices for overall improvement of preservice teachers' experiences. This paper addresses the important question of the nature of the subject matter (content knowledge) that should be a base for a science teacher education curriculum. We present our argument in two parts. Firstly, we report an argument conceptualising the nature of content knowledge for science teaching that we called TerSCK. This is followed by a presentation on the shape of a science teacher education curriculum for developing TerSCK, introduced as a TerSCK-based teacher education curriculum. Our conceptualisation argument is built on a systematic analysis of previous qualitative arguments about the nature of content knowledge for teaching school science subjects. It is influenced by Deng's foundational work critiquing the grip of the doctrine of academic disciplines in theorising content knowledge for teaching, as the base from which teachers pedagogically transform their content knowledge. While acknowledging this criticism, we present the appropriate content knowledge for science teachers (TerSCK) to reflect the complex relationship between the academic and the school science kinds of content knowledge through three of Deng's relational dimensions: logical, epistemological and social dimensions that constitute TerSCK. Drawing on Schwab's curriculum faces, these relational dimensions of TerSCK were translated into a TerSCK-based curriculum comprising five elements: (i) the fundamental concepts of the topic within the discipline; (ii) interconnections between the concepts that make up the fundamental concepts; (iii) tensions from the process of extracting the discipline fundamentals into the school curriculum constraints; (iv) scientific and other modes of inquiry from non-science disciplines; and (v) cultivating social agency. We close our argument by illustrating the implementation of the TerSCK-based curriculum using the organic chemistry topic. Creating awareness of environmental sustainability issues through formal education may be an effective way to help citizens deal with these issues. Teachers, however, have not been sufficiently trained on how to teach with sustainability concerns in mind. For this study, a purposively selected group of six chemistry teachers was exposed to an online professional development intervention (PDI) whose content draws on collective pedagogical content knowledge (cPCK) about the extraction of metals and mining as related to environmental sustainability. This paper reports on a study that explores the transfer of knowledge from cPCK to personal PCK (pPCK), and from pPCK to enacted PCK (ePCK). Data were collected using a pre- and post-PDI questionnaire, interviews and a lesson plan template. These tools were used to capture the teachers' pPCK and ePCK. During the analysis of the data, a validated PCK rubric and a master content representation created by experts were used. The PCK components of knowledge of curricular saliency, student thinking and conceptual teaching strategies constituted the lens through which the researchers investigated the chemistry teachers' PCK. The findings of this study revealed that the intervention enhanced the quality of the teachers' ePCK about extraction of metals, by informing their pPCK. It also showed that despite being exposed to the same intervention, the PCK of all the teachers did not develop to the same extent. Four of the six participants showed a positive gain in the quality of their PCK across all three components, while the other two only showed a positive gain on two of the three components. The differences in PCK development within the context of chemistry teaching were attributed to the presence of amplifiers and filters. The study contributes to both theory and practice, highlighting the need for research-informed continuous professional development of teachers in education for sustainability and suggesting ways to infuse sustainability into their teaching of chemistry. The emphasis on programming and robotics owing to the unfolding of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on the African continent has led the South African National Department of Education to propose a new subject in Grades R to 9. Hence, the training and development of pre-service teachers is crucial so that they can respond to the skills needed in the Digital Age. This preliminary study set out to explore and gauge pre-service teachers' experiences of programming and robotics. Programming is perceived as being difficult and challenging because of its abstract nature. Block-based programming has gained popularity in introducing the novice to programming concepts. This paper presents a case of nine computer science pre-service teachers from a South African university and their experiences of physical computer programming using Scratch for Arduino. Data was collected from unstructured observations during a practical session followed by a semi-structured group interview. The meaningful implementation of physical computing was supported by Rogers's (Freedom to learn: A view of what education might become, Charles Merrill, 1969) experiential learning theory. A prominent finding was that physical programming affords the opportunity to learn electronics and programming simultaneously, making programming relevant and interesting. Programming with Scratch for Arduino takes advantage of the fact that an Arduino is a physical device when paired with Scratch, further making these concepts accessible in a concrete manner. Research findings show that inquiry-based science education has positive effects in improving learning of both science content knowledge and scientific inquiry (SI) skills. As a result, various science curricula, including that of Namibia, recommend the use of an inquiry-based approach in science teaching. However, the implementation of an inquiry-based teaching approach remains a concern in Namibian science classrooms, particularly in poorly resourced schools. This paper reports the outcome of a small-scale interventionist research project which involved three experienced Life Science teachers. The teachers were exposed to an intervention that explicitly focused on supporting them with the pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) needed to facilitate inquiry-based learning in their classrooms. An indigenous technology, the production of a traditional non-alcoholic beverage (oshikundu) was used in the intervention. The Topic-Specific PCK model by Mavhunga and Rollnick provided the analytical framework for this study. Additionally, the principles of classroom inquiry together with the model of inquiry-based science instruction predict–explain–explore–observe–explain were used to scaffold teachers towards the PCK for inquiry-based teaching. Findings from the study revealed that prior to the intervention workshop some science teachers had inadequate PCK for inquiry-based approach. Except for concern over time constraints, the study established that all five components of teachers' PCK of an inquiry-based approach improved after the intervention. Furthermore, teachers recognised and recommended the use of the PEEOE model for inquiry-based science teaching. The process of making oshikundu was established as a suitable resource to conduct practical investigation in poorly resourced schools. This paper presents the findings of a study that explored the link between teachers' views on the challenges to inquiry-based science teaching (IBST) practice in the chemistry classroom and their need for professional development. The study used a multiple case study design and collected data using interviews. Participants were purposively selected. In all, eight chemistry teachers in six schools participated in the study. Five out of six cases we studied reported that the challenges the schools faced impeded the implementation of IBST. These challenges included lack of awareness of the IBST strategy, limited laboratory facilities and equipment, insufficient textbooks and overcrowded classes. In all, the views of teachers from the six cases suggested that, before embarking on the implementation of inquiry-based science teaching, it is vital to first consider a given school's teaching and learning resources, teacher capacity and motivation as essential factors that support the effective implementation of such innovation. Teachers' voices in all six cases also suggested that IBST implementation requires teacher development that focuses on their actual teaching needs and contextual challenges to optimise innovation outcomes. Three relationships between school implementation context and preferred professional development initiatives emerged. Teachers in private schools with or without resources and independent of class sizes require government-initiated and expert-led provision. Teachers at government schools with limited resources and large classes suggest expert-led workshops with a focus on sharing experiences during the workshops and on return to school. Teachers at government schools with previous access to centralised professional development and sufficient school resources (including improvised materials) indicate the need for in-school support from a professional learning community to strengthen the implementation of IBST. While a consensus within the field exists that pre-service teachers need adequate knowledge and skills to become effective teachers in mathematics, less is known about how they understand the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching in elementary education. This paper explores how Malawian pre-service teachers understand the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching in primary schools. Written answers to a questionnaire survey, and data from six individual interviews collected at the beginning of the teacher-training programme will be presented. The analytical framework is based on the practice-based theory of mathematical knowledge for teaching, with a specific focus on the domains of the common, horizon and specialised content knowledge. The data revealed that, while taking theoretical courses, pre-service teaches develop only intuitive but complementary views of what is proposed by the theory, which is even the case with pre-service teachers with some prior teaching experience. Findings provide insights into the development of pre-service teachers' mathematical knowledge for teaching, and suggest that further research is needed on how pre-service teachers articulate their understanding of teaching in practice. The chain of progression from teacher education to qualification to classroom instruction and student engagement, and then to learning and achievement, is not as straightforward as often presented. Societal, political and economic pressures create either a positive climate or a stressful one for both teachers and students. Nevertheless it is safe to say that in a subject like mathematics, the importance of subject matter knowledge cannot be underestimated. Research in this area supports the presumption that formal qualifications in the subject, in this case mathematics, are necessary, as this focused engagement with mathematics provides the foundation for mathematics teaching and learning. The allocation of fully qualified teachers to schools has in the past been uneven, with the supposition that students at higher socio-economic levels are being taught by better qualified teachers. In South Africa the improvement of teacher qualifications has been identified as a core area of action with the relevant policy on teacher education renewed in 2007 and again in 2014. The focus of this paper is to understand the change in patterns of teacher qualifications, and the interrelationship with school contextual variables. The analysis is based on the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data from 2003, 2011 and 2015, where teachers from the TIMSS sample provided contextual information. Descriptive statistics were calculated using the IEA IDB Analyzer. The results show that South Africa has made substantial progress in uplifting teachers' formal qualification levels and in reducing structural inequality within its education system. A new Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) was introduced in South Africa in 2012 to, among others, drive a learner-centred and constructivist approach to practical work in the high school subject Physical Sciences. This study investigates teachers' concerns with the implementation of practical work in Physical Sciences. A survey of 81 high school physical science teachers' concerns was conducted in a school district in South Africa. Participants were selected from 52 schools by means of convenience sampling. The seven stage concerns-based adoption model was used to identify teachers' stages of concern on the practical component of CAPS. The findings indicate that 69% of the participants (n = 47) had management concerns of high significance (p = 0.51), while the collaboration and consequence concerns were only slightly significant (p = 0.96). With regards to CAPS experience, respondents who had been implementing CAPS for less than three years had more personal concerns compared with those who had been executing it for three to four years. Equally, respondents with less experience with CAPS had marginally more management concerns compared with respondents with more experience. These trends were also observed with the collaboration and refocusing concerns suggesting that teachers with less CAPS experience worry more about their ability to manage practical work and to make laboratory activities workable in their contexts. This study focused on the assessment of the structural validity of the 28 item adapted Teacher Assessment for Learning Questionnaire (TAFL-Q) in the Kenyan context. The sample consisted of 180 mathematics teachers drawn from 50 secondary schools. Confirmatory factor analysis was used to confirm the hypothesised two-factor model of the original questionnaire. The analysis resulted in a poor fit to the Kenyan sample (CMIN/DF = 2.643, RMSEA = 0.096, SRMR = 0.085, TLI = 0.653, CFI = 0.680). The factor structure was then explored using principal components analysis with Varimax Kaiser Normalisation rotation. Nine items were eliminated and a final analysis of the remaining 19 items resulted in six factors with a total explained variance of 66%. The emergent factors were further assessed through convergent and discriminant validity and the results were within the acceptable range. The six-factor model also fitted well to the questionnaire data of the Kenyan sample. The findings suggest the need for further development of the teacher assessment for learning instruments that can be applied in measuring the teachers' perceptions in the Kenyan context and sub-Saharan Africa at large. This study investigated the effect of in-service training in the use of the ripple tank equipment on science teachers' pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) about the topic of waves. Three Grade 10 Physical Sciences teachers participated in this qualitative case study. The Refined Consensus Model informed the conceptual framework of this study, considering PCK at a topic level within each of the three realms of PCK. The training exposed teachers to the collective realm of PCK with the intention of developing their personal PCK about the topic. Teachers' personal PCK was explored by means of written Content Representations before as well as after the training. After the training, teachers' enacted PCK was observed and video-recorded while teaching the topic of waves to their learners. Pedagogical reasoning was elicited through video stimulated recall interviews. The post-training interviews also provided insight into participants' general views about the in-service training. The results show that the participants' personal PCK improved and that some of the content and skills taught during in-service training were utilized in the enacted PCK of two of the participants, particularly regarding conceptual teaching strategies. Least improvement occurred for the component of teachers' knowledge of learners' understanding. We found evidence that teachers' beliefs influence their pedagogical reasoning, acting as amplifiers and filters to translate newly acquired personal PCK into enacted PCK: teachers who prioritise hands-on experiences and teaching for understanding as opposed to rote learning are more receptive to training in the use of apparatus. Stoichiometry, which deals with the quantitative aspects of Chemistry, is a topic students find challenging and which teachers struggle to teach. South African students' performance in stoichiometry in the final matriculation examinations has led to calls for the topic to be taught better and highlighted the need for teacher professional development. This served as the rationale for this study to design an instrument to measure the quality of experienced Physical Science teachers' topic-specific pedagogical content knowledge (TSPCK) using a mixed-methods approach. Responses by five teachers to open questions on each of five components of TSPCK were used to generate scenario-based items for the instrument. The validity of the instrument was determined through Rasch analysis of responses of a sample of 31 teachers. Both the validity and reliability of the instrument to measure the quality of TSPCK in stoichiometry were found to be acceptable based on the fit statistics and reliability measures generated from the Rasch analysis.
