The effect of an increased Russian presence in the international salmon market on Alaskan fishers is evaluated using a 101-equation international supply and demand model of world salmon markets. A scenario involving Russian exports to Japan, the EC, Australia and New Zealand shows that increased Russian exports will have a negative impact on the Alaskan salmon industry. Simulation shows that a mere 20% increase in Russian pink salmon in Japan will translate into a 25% decrease in Alaskan pink salmon revenues.

Wholesale and ex-vessel prices of Alaska king crab in 1991 dropped mainly because of the industry's market structure where the US' role was that of a dominant supplier to Japanese consumers. This is explained by models of price formation and allocation for the US and Japanese markets. The models, however, may not be valid in the near future in the light of Russia's emerging king crab industry and unconventional Japanese buying behavior.

A study was conducted on the agricultural conditions in Russia. Russia can establish a highly-developed agricultural base only through the attainment of political and economic stability. Furthermore, the region must learn to do away with its central command planning system and undertake the neccessary reforms to promote privatization of state property. The realization of such reforms depends greatly, however, upon international support specifically on farm assistance and technology transfer.
