Avocado production has boomed worldwide in recent years, and Spain, including the Canary Islands, has been no exception. The number of avocado growers in the region has increased significantly as growers recognize the potential of this crop. However, several species of spider mites (Tetranychidae) pose a risk to this crop, with the genus Oligonychus being the most diverse and having the greatest economic impact. In particular, Oligonychus perseae (Tuttle, Baker and Abbatiello) has been reported as the one mainly responsible for the economic damage in major avocado-producing regions worldwide. In this paper, we aim to present an overview of the studies conducted and the measures implemented to mitigate the impact of O. perseae after its arrival in the Canary Islands. Our objective is to provide a detailed description of the current status of this pest (O. perseae), with special attention to its situation 17 years after its first appearance in avocado crops in the Canary Islands. In doing so, we aim to provide valuable insights and knowledge to understand and manage better the challenges posed by O. perseae in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mediterranean grasslands provide different ecosystems and social and economic services to the Mediterranean basin. Specifically, in Spain, pastures occupy more than 55% of the Spanish surface. Farmers and policymakers need to estimate the Gross Primary Production (GPP) to make sustainable management of these ecosystems and to study the role of grasslands acting as sinks or sources of Carbon in the context of climate change. High-frequency satellites, such as Sentinel-2, have opened the door to study GPP with a higher spatial and lower revisit time (10 m and 5 days). Therefore, the overall objective of this research is to estimate an ecosystem light use efficiency (eLUE) GPP model for a Mediterranean grassland in central Spain using Sentinel-2 NDVI Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), complemented with meteorological information at the field scale for a relatively long period (from January 2018 to July 2020). The GPP models studied in this research were the MODIS GPP product, as well as the four eLUE models built with MODIS or Sentinel-2 NDVI and complemented by the inclusion of minimum temperature (Tmin) and soil water content (SWC). The models were validated through the GPP obtained from an eddy-covariance flux tower located in the study site (GPP_T). Results showed that the MODIS GPP product underestimated the GPP_T of the grassland ecosystem. Besides this, the approach of the eLUE concept was valid for estimating GPP in this Mediterranean grassland ecosystem. In addition, the models showed an improvement using Sentinel-2 NDVI compared to MODIS GPP product and compared to the models that used MODIS NDVI due to its higher spatial and temporal resolution. The inclusion of Tmin and SWC was also a determinant in improving GPP models during winter and summer periods. This work also illustrates how the main wind directions of the study area must be considered to appropriately estimate the footprint of the eddy covariance flux tower. In conclusion, this study is the first step to efficiently estimating the GPP of Mediterranean grasslands using the Sentinel-2 NDVI with complementary meteorological field information to make the management of these ecosystems sustainable. This study aimed to establish sound relationships between soil properties of agricultural land in central Spain and their spectral attributes to contribute to deriving an indicator for sustainable farm management. Sixteen plots, managed under various conditions, eight with traditional tillage and eight with other alternative managements, were selected to gather soil samples representing three predominant soil orders (Leptosols, Cambisols, and Luvisols). Soil sampling was conducted from depths ranging from 0 to 30 cm (0–50; 5–10, 10–20, and 20–30 cm), ensuring a broad spectrum of sample variability across different times and locations. The reflectance of soil 64 soil samples was measured within the range of 400 to 900 nm, and the corresponding concentrations of soil organic carbon and majoritarian minerals, calcium carbonate, quartz, phyllosilicates, K-Feldspar, and plagioclase were determined for each sample. Partial least squares analysis was employed to construct prediction models using a calibration dataset comprising 66% of randomly selected samples. The remaining 33% of samples were utilized for model validation. The prediction models for the measured soil chemical properties yielded R2 values ranging from 0.14 to 0.79. Only SOC and limestone provided accurate prediction models. These findings hold promise for developing a soil health indicator tailored for site-specific crop management. However, the complex composition of soil organic carbon and calcium carbonate in certain soils underscores the importance of careful interpretation and validation of remote sensing data, as well as the need for advanced modeling approaches that can account for the interactions between multiple soil constituents. The use of reclaimed wastewater to irrigate crops is a valuable option due to water scarcity. However, the presence of antibiotics residues that are not removed in the tertiary treatments reaches crop soils when irrigated and it poses a serious concern for human health. Crops rhizosphere is considered a hotspot of antibiotic resistant genes (ARG) being in addition a link to plant phyllosphere and human microbiome. Understanding the structure of the soil microbiota is crucial before applying any bioremediation or biostimulation strategy. The aim of this work was firstly to confirm the presence of antibiotics residues in soil and fruits in two greenhouses at the south of Spain irrigated with reclaimed water. Secondly, to characterize the rhizosphere microbiome of three crops (Capsicum annuum, Cucumis melo and Solanum melongena) cultured in those greenhouses. Finally, a predictive functional analysis was done using PICRUSt2 to figure out the rhizosphere resistome. The presence of residues of antibiotics was confirmed both soil and fruits. Antibiotics absorbed by plants correlated with those on soil. The most abundant resistance gene was the multidrug in all the three crops tested. Compatibility of basidiomycete fungi (i.e., Pleurotus) with soil bacteria could be indicative of their possible use for restoration of agricultural soils polluted with antibiotics. Aubergine (Solanum melongena L.) (Solanaceae) is a widespread crop in the Mediterranean basin. Verticillium dahliae is one of the main soil-borne pathogens affecting the aubergine crop. Its control has traditionally been achieved by soil fumigation with chemical disinfectants. Restrictions on the use of chemical fumigants have led to the search for solutions in genetic resistance using rootstocks. In southeastern Spain, aubergines are grafted for the control of V. dahliae. Two Solanum torvum rootstocks (Hugo F1 and Torpedo) and a Solanum melongena hybrid (Javah F1) were tested against five isolates of V. dahliae obtained from grafted (A1 and A2) and ungrafted (Vd8, Vd17 and Vd66) aubergines compared with the susceptible cultivar Larne F1 under controlled conditions. Isolates from grafted plants infected all three rootstocks, with differences observed in the percentage of plants with symptoms and in the disease symptom severity. Three strains isolated from the ungrafted aubergines (Vd8, Vd17 and Vd66) infected Javah F1 rootstock. The Hugo F1 and Torpedo rootstocks showed a high level of resistance to V. dahliae, while Javah F1 was susceptible to the pathogen. The Hugo F1 and Torpedo rootstocks are suitable for mitigating the effects of Verticillium wilt in Mediterranean aubergine crops. Faba bean (Vicia faba) is a temperate grain legume of major importance for food and feed. Powdery mildews are an important group of diseases in many crops, although in faba bean, it is still considered to be of only minor and local relevance. Here, we report the occurrence of powdery mildew in southern Spain, which was identified through ITS sequencing as Erysiphe trifolii. Resistance screenings allowed the identification of a wide range of responses to the disease, with accessions BPL-710 and ILB-4708 outstanding due to their high levels of resistance. Histological studies showed that the mechanisms of resistance may involve the inhibition of germination and impairment of fungal development, as shown by a limited number of primary and secondary hyphae compared to those of the susceptible accessions. Greenhouse microclimate and crop response of winter cucumber cycles grown in unheated Mediterranean greenhouses with representative combinations of passive heating systems (fixed, plastic screen with and without black mulch; movable thermal screen with black mulch; and double-layer plastic covering with black mulch) were evaluated in Almería, SE Spain. In the first experiment, the black mulch in combination with a movable or fixed screen increased the marketable cucumber yield by 14%, which appears to be mostly attributable to higher substrate temperatures induced by the black mulch in the cold period. Moreover, the black mulch in combination with a fixed screen frequently led to screen water condensation. The use of a movable screen, rather than a fixed one, in combination with a black mulch increased the first-class cucumber yield in the second experiment and reduced the non-marketable one in the first experiment. This might be mainly attributable to the higher incoming shortwave radiation in the cold period. Moreover, the movable screen reduced the risk of water condensation on the screen and the crop. The cucumber in the greenhouse with the double-layer covering and black mulch, compared to that with movable screen and black mulch, received lower daily incoming shortwave radiation, particularly, during the second half of the cycle (mainly due to the formation of water condensation droplets on the lower surface of the external plastic film), which reduced crop yield. Further field research is needed to better quantify the most limiting factor for growth (substrate/soil or air temperature, radiation, or water condensation) in Mediterranean greenhouse crops. In addressing the agricultural challenges posed by climate change, the use of biofertilizers, derived from living organisms, promotes environmentally friendly crop cultivation, and represents an adaptive strategy for sustainable agriculture in the face of climate uncertainty. Careful selection of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) would represent a crucial step in mycorrhizal inoculation, considering the varying levels of compatibility between the AMF and the host plant. This study aimed to assess the impact of two AMF species that are prevalent in citrus soils of south-eastern Spain (Rhizophagus irregularis and Funneliformis mosseae) on the Citrus aurantium seedlings' behavior. Sour-orange plants showed a high mycorrhizal dependence regardless of the specific AMF species. Both R. irregularis and F. mosseae fungi exhibited high colonization percentages, with R. irregularis outperforming F. mosseae in root colonization. Inoculation with both AMF yielded notable growth improvements, but R. irregularis exhibited higher positive effects in the long term. The heightened P nutrition and increased chlorophyll concentration significantly enhanced the performance of AMF-inoculated plants. With F. mosseae, plants showed more pronounced improvements in P nutrition and a stronger correlation of their dry mass with P concentration; however, in general, inoculation with R. irregularis produced a higher sour-orange-plant performance. Both R. irregularis and F. mosseae fungi produced strong positive effects in sour-orange growth, which positioned them as viable biofertilizer options. These results can contribute to enhancing understanding for the development of an improved design of biofertilizers used in regions that are vulnerable to climate change, such as south-eastern Spain.
