Soil acidity is a crop production problem of increasing concern in acid red soil. The potential of biochar as a soil amendment/for soil acid management in agricultural fields is a recently recognized yet underutilized technology. Related evidence is currently limited to short-term indoor experiments with one-time BC applications and no crop cultivation, yet the degree to which soil acidity may be impacted by the biochar aging process on long-time scale remains unclear. To evaluate the effects of successive seasonal applications of rice straw-derived biochar (BC) on acidity and fertility of soil, a five-year outdoor column trial was conducted using wheat-millet rotated acidic upland soils from the south of China. BC was applied to the top 0–15 cm of soil at the rates of 0 (BC0), 2.25 (BCL), and 22.5 (BCM) Mg ha−1 with an identical dose of NPK fertilizers at the beginning of each crop season. Our results showed that the wheat-millet biomass yield gradually decreased over five rotation cycles in BC0 without BC application. In contrast, after five rotations, BCM led to an increase in the total wheat/millet grain yield by 138%, and the straw yield increased by 253% compared to the control. The cumulative above-ground nutrient uptake of P, K, Ca, Na, and Mg in BCM also increased by 139%, 171%, 129%, 182%, and 71%, respectively, compared to that in the control. This positive effect was attributed to the increase in soil pH (3.29 units), cation exchange capacity (5.66 cmol kg−1), soil available P (241%), K (513%), Ca (245%), Mg (265%), exchange base (3.36 cmol kg−1), base saturation percentage (65.7%), and decrease in the exchangeable acidity, especially exchangeable Al3+ content (<0.1 cmol kg−1). Our results demonstrated that rice straw-derived BC application to soil at 22.5 t ha−1 was found to be highly consistent in decreasing soil acidity and reducing soluble and exchangeable Al3+, indicating its higher ameliorating capacity in the south of China in the long run. Nitrogen (N) availability is generally a limiting factor in highly acidic soil, which could be improved by amending these soils with alkaline materials. Soil extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) plays an important role in N transformation; a current knowledge gap is how this occurs in acidic soils amended with alkaline material. The present 45-day incubation experiment was designed to examine the effects of different amounts of alkaline materials (urea and/or calcium–silicon–magnesium–potassium fertilizer (CSMP)) on N transformation. The results show that soil pH significantly increased after the CSMP amendment (1.2 units) and increased soil net N mineralization (Rmin), net nitrification (Rnit) rates, and net ammonification (Ramo) rates. CSMP amendment changed the different soil EEA but with differing or opposing effects, e.g., Rnit was positively correlated with the activities of L-leucine aminopeptidase, β-xylosidase, α-glucosidase, and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase but negatively correlated with β-1, 4-glucosidase and β-cellobiosidase. A machine learning analysis indicated that the best predictor for Rmin and Ramo was soil pH, and for Rnit, it was nitrate. The results of the present study improve our understanding of N availability in acidic soils amended with materials to control soil pH. In Ultisols and Oxisols, potassium (K) in the soil solution is leached from the rhizosphere before it interacts with soil colloids, or exchanged with other cations at the exchange sites of the soils because of the abundance of kaolinite clay minerals. These soils are highly weathered, low in organic matter, and low in pH, but high aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) ions. Hence, K becomes unavailable for plants, and this compromises crop production and farmers' profitability. The pH neutralizing effects of sago (Metroxylon sagu) bark ash and the ability of charcoal to chelate Al and Fe could be utilized to improve soil pH, reduce soil acidity, and improve K availability. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of amending muriate of potash (MOP) with charcoal and sago bark ash on selected soil chemical properties in a tropical acid soil (Typic Paleudults) over 90 days in a laboratory incubation. The proportions of charcoal and sago bark ash were varied at 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%, but the MOP was fixed at 100% of the recommended rate. Selected soil chemical properties before and after incubation were determined using standard procedures. Results revealed that co-application of the soil amendments with MOP increased soil-exchangeable K compared with conventional practice. Moreover, amending the acid soil with charcoal and sago bark ash positively enhanced the availability of other base cations and soil cation exchange capacity (CEC). This was possible because the amendments increased soil pH and reduced exchangeable acidity, exchangeable Al3+, and exchangeable Fe2+. However, there was no significant improvement in water-soluble K (WSK) in the soil with or without charcoal and sago bark over the 90 days laboratory study. The findings of this study suggested that increasing soil pH could potentially improve soil K sorption capacity. Thus, the optimum rates of charcoal and sago bark ash to increase K availability were found to be 80% charcoal with 80% sago bark ash, 60% charcoal with 60% sago bark ash, and 80% charcoal with 40% sago bark ash, because these rates improved soil-exchangeable K+ and CEC significantly, besides minimizing soil-exchangeable acidity. The highly weathered, acidic tropical soils are generally less fertile because of their low pH, high exchangeable acidity, and Al, Fe, and Mn saturations. Using soil amendments to solve the aforementioned problems is essential. To this end, Calciprill and sodium silicate are worth considering because of their high neutralizing value and dissolution to suppress exchangeable acidity and Al, Fe, and Mn hydrolysis, while at the same time increasing soil pH to improve the availability of inorganic N, available P, exchangeable base cations, and Effective Cation Exchange Capacity (ECEC). An incubation study was conducted to determine the right combination of Calciprill and sodium silicate to reduce exchangeable acidity and Al and Fe hydrolysis to improve inorganic N, available P, exchangeable base cations availability, and ECEC. Bekenu series (Typic Paleudults) was incubated with a combined use of Calciprill at 80%, 90%, and 100% Ca saturations and sodium silicate at 90, 105, 120, 135, and 150 kg ha−1 for 40, 80, and 120 days, respectively. The laboratory incubation study was carried out using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with triplicates to determine the aforementioned treatment effects of the combined use of Calciprill and sodium silicate on soil pH, exchangeable, Al, inorganic N, available P, electrical conductivity, exchangeable cations (K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, and Mn), and ECEC using standard procedures. Soils with both amendments significantly increased soil inorganic N, available P, electrical conductivity, exchangeable base cations (K, Ca, Mg, and Na), and ECEC. This was because the amendments increased soil pH by suppressing exchangeable acidity. Moreover, they transformed Al, Fe, and Mn ions into insoluble compounds such as Al and Fe hydroxides and Mn oxides because of their high inherent exchangeable cations, especially Ca and Na. This suggests that the combined use of Calciprill and sodium silicate can enhance soil productivity. The most suitable combination is 7.80 g Calciprill and 9.26 g sodium silicate (C3S5) per one kilogram soil. Additionally, the findings provide fundamental information for future greenhouse and field trials to determine the effects of the suitable combination of the amendments uncovered by this present study on soil health and crop productivity. Phosphorus (P) is a vital soil macronutrient required by plants for optimum growth and development. However, its availability is limited because of fixation. The phosphorus fixation reaction is pH dependent. In acid soils, the predominance of aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) oxides in both crystalline and amorphous forms reduces the solubility of soil inorganic P through fixation on positively charged surfaces and formation of insoluble Al and Fe precipitates. In alkaline soils, P readily reacts with calcium (Ca) to form sparingly soluble calcium phosphates. As a result, a large proportion of applied P may become chemically bound, whereas only a small fraction of soil P remains in the soil solution and available for plant uptake. To date, there is little information available on the use of charcoal with a highly negative charge and wood ash with high alkalinity to minimise P fixation in acid soils. Thus, this study examined the potential of the combined use of charcoal and wood ash to unlock P fixation in acid soils. Numerous studies have been conducted to identify effective approaches to improve P availability through the use of different types of soil amendments, regardless of whether P is organically or inorganically present. For example, to mitigate P fixation in acid soils, amendments such as compost and zeolite are used to reduce P sorption sites. These amendments have also been used to increase P uptake and crop productivity in P deficient acid soils by reducing soil acidity and the toxicity of Al and Fe. It is believed that long-term application of charcoal and sago bark ash can positively change the physical and chemical properties of soils. These improvements do not only reduce P fixation in acid soils, but they also promote an effective utilisation of nutrients through timely release of nutrients for maximum crop production. This paper reviews the use of charcoal and wood ash in acid soils as adsorbents to improve N availability at the same time improving their soil fertility and crop productivity. Soil acidification poses a major challenge in agricultural sustainability and it is serious in highly weathered soils such as Ultisols and Oxisols which are noted for nutrient deficiency and Al and Fe ions toxicities. Understanding sorption mechanisms and isotherms is important for the improvement of soil N availability particularly inorganic N. However, understanding the sorption mechanisms in relation to charcoal and wood ash as absorbents in the literature is difficult because the soil amendments vary depending on their raw materials or sources of origin. Therefore, one of the objectives of this review is to provide recent research findings and theory development on the role of charcoal and wood ash in agriculture. Furthermore, this review focuses on how charcoal and wood ash improve N availability through physical, chemical and biological processes in mineral acidic soils. Soil acidity is a major problem when it comes to improving crop productivity and nutrient uptake. This experiment was therefore conducted at a farmer's field—Nalitabari Upazila under AEZ 22 (northern and eastern Piedmont plains) to evaluate the effects of lime and organic manure (OM) amendment on crop productivity and nutrient uptake of the wheat–mungbean–T. Aman cropping pattern in acidic soils of northern and eastern Piedmont plains. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. There were nine treatments applied, varying doses of lime (dololime at the rate of 1 and 2 t ha−1), OM (cow dung at the rate of 5 t ha−1, poultry manure at the rate of 3 t ha−1) and a lime–OM combination to the first crop; T. Aman and its residual effects were evaluated in the succeeding second crop, wheat, and the third crop, mungbean. Results demonstrate that application of lime and organic manure to soil had significant effects on the first crop. However, the effects of lime and organic manure were more pronounced in the second and third crops. The increase in grain yield over control ranged from 0.24 to 13.44% in BINA dhan7. However, it varied from 10.14 to 54.38% in BARI Gom30 and 40 to 161.67% in BARI Mung6. The straw yields of the crops also followed a similar trend. The N, P, K, and S uptake by grain and straw of T. Aman, wheat, and mungbean were influenced significantly by the combined application of lime and organic manure. Sole or combined application of lime and manure amendment significantly improved nutrient availability and soil quality. Therefore, application of lime in combination with manure can be practiced for uplifting the crop productivity and improving soil quality in acidic Piedmont soils of northern and eastern Piedmont plains. Intensive land use including cultivation may result in soil degradation. Restoring natural conditions or utility values called reclamation usually requires prior improvement of soil properties by using fertilizers or soil amendments. Special attention is paid to biochar, as it can improve soil physical and chemical properties. Therefore, amendment is potentially useful for preparation of degraded soil for future vegetation. In pot experiments, we studied the effect of wheat straw biochar (5% v/w) (soil with biochar (S + BC)), two rates of mineral fertilizer (no fertilizer as a control set (SC) and single initial dose of fertilizer (S + NPK)), and combination of biochar and fertilizer (S + B C + NPK) on sandy soil properties and grass growth. Biochar significantly increased soil pH, total organic carbon content (TOC), and volumetric water content (VWC, +24% after one week of measurements). However, dry mass of grass shoots was lower in S + BC than in SC (−38%). It was also observed that, in fertilizer, applied sets high concentrations of salts caused crust formation, surface cracking, and overdrying. Considering the results, biochar may be useful for increasing sandy substrate fertility, providing proper conditions for revegetation during reclamation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus bacterium, associated with Huanglongbing (HLB) disease of citrus trees, moves downward in the phloem and infects the roots soon after transmission by the Asian Citrus Psyllid (Diaphorina citri) vector into shoots. Before canopy symptoms appear, 30–50% of the roots are damaged. Without aggressive management to reduce abiotic and biotic stress, root loss increases to 70–80%. An extensive survey of HLB-affected groves in central and south-central Florida indicated that a greater decline in fibrous root health as well as a greater expression of HLB symptoms is observed where irrigation water is high in bicarbonates (>100 mg L−1) and soil pH is >6.5. Over three seasons of survey, acidification of irrigation water in the central and south-central citrus growing regions of Florida reduced the decline in root density associated with HLB. Irrigation water treatment with sulfuric acid and soil amendment with elemental sulfur for 36 months to establish a soil pH range from 4.0 to 7.0 increased root growth, soil nutrient availability, and the uptake of Ca, Mg, Mn, and Zn in response to a gradual reduction in soil pH in young and mature Valencia orange groves on Swingle citrumelo rootstock.
