Biofertilizers with phosphate-solubilizing microorganism (PSM) inoculations have been suggested to diminish the limitation of phosphorus (P) deficiency in plants. However, their applications in agriculture are restricted due to the inconstant effects of various PSMs. Proper carriers for the inoculations may overcome this shortcoming and improve PSMs' effectiveness. The objective of this study was to investigate whether straw compost, a type of organic material, can act as a carrier for improving the efficiencies of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria and fungi named Acinetobacter sp. and Aspergillus niger, respectively, in soils. We monitored the growth and cellular physiological responses of one type of model plants, named perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), under four soil treatments, including non-fertilization, PSM inoculation alone, straw compost addition alone, and the combined applications of both PSMs and straw compost. We found the combined treatments significantly improved the growth by 14.7% for shoot height and 79.7% for shoot weight, respectively, on average. P and potassium (K) uptakes of ryegrass were also increased by 102.5% and 65.3%, respectively, after the application of both PSMs and straw compost. Furthermore, physiological properties, such as photosynthetic efficiency and P-transportation capacity, of ryegrass were also significantly improved under combined treatments when compared to other treatments, regardless of the types of PSM included. The piecewise structural equation model further indicated that PSM inoculation and straw compost input are synergistically contributing to the nutrient uptake of ryegrass through many direct and indirect ways. We propose that straw compost is a good carrier material for PSMs' survival and would improve their plant growth promotion ability in soil. The premixtures flufenacet plus diflufenican and flufenacet plus diflufenican plus metribuzin are two herbicides recently registered in Greece for weed control in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with application early post-emergence to the crop (1st–3rd leaf growth stage). To evaluate the selectivity of these new herbicides, pot experiments were conducted by applying flufenacet plus diflufenican at 240 + 120 g ai ha−1 and flufenacet plus diflufenican plus metribuzin at 119.7 + 119.7 + 44.8 g ai ha−1 to bread wheat and barley, at 1st (BBCH-11), 2nd (BBCH-12) and 3rd (BBCH-13) leaf growth stage. The efficacy of the herbicides at the above-mentioned rates in pre-emergence application was also tested on three ALS/ACCase herbicide-resistant populations of Lolium rigidum Gaudin in comparison with the pre-emergence herbicides prosulfocarb and chlorotoluron plus diflufenican at 3200 g ai ha−1 and 1380 + 92 g ai ha−1, respectively. The results revealed decreased selectivity of both premixtures when applied at BBCH-11 for both winter cereals, with flufenacet plus diflufenican being less selective compared to flufenacet plus diflufenican plus metribuzin. Both herbicides highly controlled the three herbicide-resistant L. rigidum populations. The results indicated that both premixtures are effective chemical options for the management of herbicide resistant L. rigidum. The co-allocation of photovoltaic arrays with crops presents a promising strategy to mitigate the conflict between photovoltaics and agricultural land. However, there is a notable lack of quantitative research on the impact of agrivoltaic system on land quality in fragile areas. In this study, peanuts (Arachis hypogaea) and ryegrass (Lolium perenne) were cultivated in photovoltaic array in the dry–hot valley of southwest China, with an off-site native land serving as the control. Sixteen soil physicochemical and biochemical parameters were measured in the gap and under-panel and control area. Results demonstrated that the agrivoltaic system significantly enhanced soil moisture, organic carbon, nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium nutrients, microbial biomass, and urease activity. It also led to varying degrees of increase in soil pH and electrical conductivity, along with reduced soil sucrase and phosphatase activity. In comparison to the control, the agrivoltaic system notably improved soil quality and multifunctionality. Specially, gap cultivation had a more pronounced positive impact on soil quality than under-panel cultivation, and the cultivation of peanuts had a greater effect on soil quality and multifunctionality improvement than ryegrass. This study provides fundamental data to support the improvement of land quality in photovoltaic developed regions, and to alleviate the conflict between photovoltaics and agricultural land. Precise information about carbohydrates and proteins in relation to their utilization in the rumen is useful for the breeding purposes of perennial ryegrass cultivars used for animal nutrition. The objective of the current study was to evaluate 20 diploid perennial ryegrass accessions from the intermediary heading stage. The ruminal kinetics of different carbohydrate and protein fractions of grasses and legumes are important for forage breeding programs. The Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS) was used to provide such information. Accession-based variation can be observed after considering dynamic degradation processes. Variation among the 20 accessions was observed. Ruminally digested (RDC) and undigested (UDC) carbohydrate and ruminally degraded (RDP) and undegraded (UDP) protein contents, total carbohydrate and total protein contents, and carbohydrate and protein fractions for the first cut and annual averages show significant differences. Although the variation was smaller for the protein fractions, the calculated usable protein content (uCP, sum of UDP and amount of synthesized microbial protein in the rumen) in the small intestine is mainly influenced by decreasing the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and increasing the sugar content among cultivars. Carbohydrate and protein fractionation is suitable for characterizing perennial grass accessions as it uses parameters relevant to ruminant nutrition, allowing a step forward in forage plant breeding for forage quality. To conclude, using parameters related to ruminal degradation kinetics should favor the selection of accessions with higher amounts of ruminally digested carbohydrates (RDC). Autumn grazing management aims to accumulate herbage for defoliation prior to a decrease in growth rates for the extension of the grazing season. The current study investigated the impact of building different target herbage masses (THMs) in autumn and imposing one of three different defoliation dates (DDs) between mid-October and late November on light transmitted to the base of the sward, free leaf lamina (FLL), leaf stage and internode elongation. Four THMs (low, medium, high and very high) and three DDs (DD1—15 October, DD2—7 November and DD3—21 November) were assigned to a 4 × 3 split plot design over two years. Light transmitted to the base of the sward was greatest in the low THM and decreased in all other THMs. Internode elongation increased in tillers in the medium to the very high THMs. Defoliation of the medium, high and, in particular, the very high THMs earlier in autumn reduced the effect of decreased light transmission on internode elongation. This study highlights that, as light transmitted to the base of the sward decreases, internode elongation increases, and this could negatively impact sward structure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between phosphorus (P) availability and water restriction was explored in this study, focusing on its impact on phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) and water use efficiency (WUE) in various bromegrass (Bromus spp.) genotypes. Under controlled conditions, five bromegrass genotypes, as well as one ryegrass (Lolium perenne) cultivar, were compared by subjecting them to two P levels and two watering regimes. It was determined that combining water and phosphorus limitations led to reduced plant productivity. Initially, the ryegrass outperformed the bromegrass, but this result declined over time, while bromegrass exhibited consistent stability. Notably, under P and water stress, enhanced root development was observed in bromegrass compared to that in ryegrass. Distinct patterns of PUE and WUE allowed for the categorization of bromegrass genotypes into three groups. Genotype 3457 emerged as the most efficient, scoring 20 out of 24, while Pro 94-49 A achieved a score of only 10 out of 24. This study suggests that the drought resilience of bromegrass may be linked to increased root growth during the early vegetative stages, which potentially facilitates improved P acquisition. However, further validation through long-term field experiments is needed. The essential oil (EO) of Thymbra capitata has been demonstrated to possess herbicidal activity and could be used as an alternative to synthetic herbicides with reduced persistence in soil and new mode of action. Nevertheless, it is necessary to determine the adequate doses for its use, the proper way for its application and the best phenological stage of weeds and crops in which the EO should be applied to obtain maximum efficacy against weeds without compromising crop production. In this work, T. capitata EO was tested at three different concentrations against weeds grown from a citrus orchard soil seedbank untreated with herbicides and against three important weed species grown in substrate to determine the efficacy of the concentrations on different weed species. All experiments were carried out under greenhouse conditions. To find out the best way for applying the EO, it was applied by irrigation and by spraying on the targeted weeds, and to verify the influence of timing, it was tested on Lolium rigidum at two different phenological stages and on wheat at a later phenological stage than weeds. The highest concentration tested (12 µL·mL−1) showed the best performance to control weeds. The more effective mode of application was by spraying on dicotyledons and by irrigation on monocotyledons at the earliest phenological stage. T. capitata EO was phytotoxic for wheat. The widespread practice of using high doses of nitrogen to increase unit area yield in annual ryegrass introduces ecological and economic problems. This research was carried out over two years and aimed to determine the potential forage yield and quality of annual ryegrass by applying manure, humic acid, and low doses of nitrogen fertilizer, within the framework of sustainable forage crop cultivation. The study was carried out from 2020 to 2022 with three replications according to the randomized block split plots experimental design. According to the study results, the highest values were achieved with combinations that included manure application, and even higher values were observed when manure was applied along with low doses of humic acid and nitrogen. The M20 + H20 + N100 treatment yielded the highest fresh yield, dry matter, and crude protein. The treatments with manure, humic acid, and nitrogen fertilizer had varying effects on the ADF and NDF content of annual ryegrass, resulting in fluctuating values. In conclusion, 20 t manure, 20 L humic acid, and 100 kg ha−1 N application can be suggested for sustainable and higher dry matter production with good quality for annual ryegrass cultivation under semi-humid climatic conditions. The Quick Wash (QW) treatment extracts phosphorus (P) from manure and municipal sludge (MS), producing an organic acidified by-product with adequate nitrogen (N):P ratio to meet crop N requirements. Yet, data on crop response to N using QW by-products are lacking. We evaluated the response of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and potential N leaching in sandy soil to N applications using raw wastes, their corresponding QW by-products, and ammonium sulfate (AMS) fertilizer. Treatments included a control (no amendment added), raw and acid-washed chicken litter, dairy and swine manure, MS, and AMS at 100, 200, and 400 kg N ha−1. We found no significant differences in annual ryegrass yield and N uptake between the raw and acidified organic QW by-products. However, ryegrass produced 4–30% more biomass with AMS than organic amendments. The total residual soil inorganic N under AMS treatments ranged between 6.3 and 67.9 mg pot−1 and accounted for 5–17% of the total N applied, but it was <1% for all the organic amendments. We found no differences in soil N leaching between raw and acid-washed forms of each organic soil amendment. Our results indicated that acidified organic QW by-products can improve environmental quality by substantially reducing the amount of applied P with no penalties for crop yield losses compared to raw manure and MS. Perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) is a commonly grown pasture species in temperate agriculture, mainly serving as a primary energy source for dairy cows. However, its limited persistence often leads to missed production potential and early resowing, especially in countries that experience summer drought, e.g., Australia and New Zealand. Therefore, understanding the factors influencing perennial ryegrass pasture persistence is crucial for sustainable land management and climate resilience in pasture-based animal production systems. Significant gaps in knowledge exist regarding the factors influencing pasture persistence, as the number of conducted studies in this area remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing the expression of persistence in perennial ryegrass populations using airborne and ground-based sensors. A field experiment was conducted in the southwest region of Victoria, Australia, involving ten commercial perennial ryegrass cultivar–endophyte combinations in two different populations. Persistence was evaluated using sensor-based and conventional pasture measurements over two consecutive autumns. The results revealed significant fixed effects of cultivar, endophyte, and environment and their interactions on persistence traits of perennial ryegrass. Cultivars Alto, Samson, and One50 exhibited high levels of persistence when infected with novel endophyte strains. Furthermore, prolonged environmental stresses were found to drive directional selection within pasture populations. The findings emphasise the importance of selecting appropriate cultivar–endophyte combinations and early detection of signs of poor persistence to optimise sward longevity and financial returns from pasture-based animal production systems. Fly ash (FA) is promising for environmental remediation, but how to modify the FA with high remediation efficiency through an environmentally friendly and low-cost modification method is scare. A modified FA (MFA) was prepared through a one-step hydrothermal modification with Ca(OH)2 and KH2PO4. Results indicated that irregular agglomerates occurred on the surface of the MFA and that the specific surface area increased by 1.94 times compared to that of FA. Compared to FA, glassy compositions in MFA were destroyed and amorphous Si/Al and alkaline aluminosilicate gels were formed. The soil application of 0.2–0.6% MFA significantly increased soil pH by 0.23–0.86 units compared to FA and decreased available lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) by 25–97.1% and 13.5–75%, respectively. MFA significantly decreased exchangeable Pb and Cu by 12.5–32% and 11.4–35.2%, respectively, compared to FA. This may be due to the high pH and specific surface area of MFA, which promoted to the formation of amorphous Si/Al, metal–phosphate precipitation, and complexation with functional groups. In addition, MFA slightly increased the biomass of shoots and roots and decreased the uptake of Pb and Cu by ryegrass. Extended waterlogging (WL) conditions in heavily manured soils can change soil phosphorus (P) dynamics. We assessed the effects of soil moisture regimes (field capacity (FC) and WL) and P rates on (i) dry matter (DM) yield and P offtake of ryegrass, (ii) changes in soil Fe3+, Fe2+, and soil P, and (iii) risk of P leaching. The treatments were tested in a four-month greenhouse experiment using intact soil columns and annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum). The DM yield and P offtake were lower under WL compared with FC. The concentration of Fe3+ was 1984 mg kg−1 (0–30 cm) under FC, but 1213 mg kg−1 at 0–5 cm and 2024 mg kg−1 at 25–30 cm depth under WL. The concentration of Fe2+ was 244 mg kg−1 (0–30 cm) under FC, but 2897 at 0–5 cm and 687 mg kg−1 at 25–30 cm under WL. The water extractable P (Pw) was 12.7 mg kg−1 at 0–5 cm and 9.5 mg kg−1 at 25–30 cm under FC, but 8.6 mg kg−1 at 0–5 cm and 10.5 mg kg−1 at 25–30 cm under WL. The P saturation index (PSI) was 27.2% at 0–5 cm and 17.4% at 25–30 cm under FC, but averaged 11.9% at 0–30 cm under WL. We can conclude that extended WL associated with flooding creates reducing conditions in the soil, thus decreasing the concentration of Fe3+, but increasing the concentrations of Fe2+ and the solubility of P which can exacerbate the risk of P loss with runoff and leaching. Intercropping perennial legumes with trees can reduce Nitrogen (N) losses, due to the high amount of N accumulated in stable forms in the soil and permanent soil cover during the whole year. Although N cycling improvement in mature agroforestry systems (AFS) was well documented, there is a lack of knowledge regarding systems in transition to AF. In this work, we studied the association of two perennial forage crops, namely ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and sulla (Hedysarum coronarium L.), with 1-year old poplars, to evaluate: (i) the agronomic performance of sulla and ryegrass with vs. without intercropped poplar trees; (ii) the N-fixing ability of sulla in association with trees; (iii) the N transfer effect from sulla and growth promoting effect on poplar; and finally (iv) the nitrate leaching reduction due to the presence of poplar trees associated to forage crops. The layout was arranged in a two-factor randomized complete blocks design (RCB) with three replicates. The first factor tested (crop species) implied two different swards, namely sulla and ryegrass. The second factor (cropping system) included two different systems: PAST i.e., a pastoral system without trees, and SIPAST, i.e., a silvo-pastoral system with one poplar tree row beside the sward. Sulla resulted more productive than ryegrass when associated with trees (+35%). No clear trend was observed about the tree influence on N-fixation in sulla, but the amount of N fixed resulted higher in in sulla grown in the SIPAST near the trees (+35%). Poplar plants, even in the first year after planting, resulted effective yet in reducing the nitrate flux from the crops towards ditches. Further investigations are needed to study other swards in young AF and better understand the N dynamics; in particular, it could be worth to assess the nutrient flux in the soil solution. Three perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) populations (R1, R2, and R3) with suspected resistance (R) to acetolactate synthase (ALS) or acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) herbicides were collected from wheat (Triticum aestivum) fields in northwestern Greece to study the underlying mechanisms of resistance and their impact on growth rate and competitive ability against wheat. Preemergence and postemergence plant dose–response assays showed that the R1 population was cross-resistant to the ALS inhibitors chlorsulfuron, mesosulfuron + iodosulfuron, and pyroxsulam, but susceptible (S) to imazamox. However, all populations were susceptible to the ACCase inhibitors clodinafop-propargyl, clethodim, diclofop-methyl, and pinoxaden. The analysis of the ALS gene sequence revealed a substitution of Pro197 by His or Leu in the ALS enzyme in L. perenne, which is reported for the first time in this weed and indicates a potential mechanism of target site-mediated resistance. The R1 population grown in the absence or presence of wheat competition displayed similar aboveground biomass and tiller number trends, and therefore similar estimated growth rates. In addition, the aboveground biomass of wheat was similarly reduced by both the R1 and S populations, supporting the evidence of their similar competitive ability against wheat. Soil microorganisms play a vital role in increasing the availability of phosphorus (P) for plants through mineralization of organic P and solubilization of precipitated P compounds. In this two-year study, we analyzed several P-solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) of the genus Bacillus and their consortiums for the ability to release soluble P from apatite concentrates of various grinding degrees using ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) as a model plant. The effects were accessed by analyzing plant growth and nutrient assimilation. The greatest effect on root system development and plant biomass accumulation (dry weight) was observed for the apatite concentrate of standard grinding in combination with Bacillus megaterium BI14 and Bacillus subtilis BI2 and Bacillus velezensis BS89 strains. Although the introduction of apatite concentrates led to an increase in the content of total strontium in soil, the levels of strontium did not exceed the maximum allowable concentration, and the accumulation of mobile strontium by plants was unchanged; importantly, the use of tested PSMs led to a decrease in the strontium content in the green biomass of ryegrass. Our results indicate that biologized apatite concentrates in combination with PSMs represent promising fertilizers that can provide a source of soluble P to be readily assimilated by plants. The current guidelines of waste management are aimed at the recovery and recycling of biowaste while respecting the protection of human health and the environment. The recent European legislation on fertilizers provides for the use of digestates derived from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). The objectives of this study were to verify the fertilizing effect of three types of OFMSW digestates on the ryegrass culture comparing mineral fertilization and to evaluate the nitrogen lost to leaching in soil diversely fertilized following simulated rainfall. The ryegrass was grown in pots. The soil was fertilized with mineral fertilizer or OFMSW digestates. For each treatment, five mowing procedures were performed on the crop, and the ryegrass biomass production and nitrogen concentration were determined from the ryegrass samples. During the experiment, six rains were simulated, and the leached nitrogen was analyzed. The results showed that: (i) the fertilizing effect of OFMSW digestates on nitrogen nutrition of ryegrass was similar to ammonium sulphate fertilization, confirming the agronomic validity of these by-products to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers; (ii) soil fertilization with OFMSW digestates had a positive effect limiting nitrogen loss due to leaching compared to mineral fertilization, highlighting the soil-improving properties of these by-products, in particular of the composted digestate. Herbicide resistance is an important weed management issue. Glyphosate is the most dominant herbicide, which controls a broad spectrum of weeds, including grasses such as Lolium rigidum. Lolium rigidum is a major weed of winter crops in Australia that is developing glyphosate resistance in increasing numbers of populations and has been observed growing throughout summer in recent years. Three L. rigidum populations, one summer-emerging glyphosate-resistant (GR), one winter-emerging glyphosate-susceptible (GS), and one winter-emerging population with unknown resistance status (CC04), were analyzed for target-site resistance to glyphosate after confirming their resistance or susceptibility to glyphosate in a dose–response experiment. Population GR was obtained from plants that emerged in summer and contained plants that survived all rates of glyphosate applied (0 to 4560 g a.e. ha−1). It was found to be 6.1 and 4.4 times more resistant than population GS across two experiments. Population CC04 was identified as susceptible. Plants from each population were analyzed for the presence of target-site mutations in the conserved region of the EPSPS gene; however, no mutations were identified that could cause resistance, suggesting non-target-site resistance in population GR. The effectiveness of alternative herbicides was also analyzed for each population. Paraquat was the most effective herbicide, with 0% survival across all populations. The ACCase-inhibiting herbicide clethodim was also highly effective (0 to 8% survival across populations). Other ACCase-inhibiting herbicides, propaquizafop, haloxyfop, and pinoxaden, were effective at controlling the two susceptible populations, CC04 and GS (0 to 36% and 0 to 20% survival, respectively), but were only moderately effective for controlling GR (28 to 51% survival). Paraquat and clethodim may be alternative options for controlling GR populations of L. rigidum and could be effective for use in management programs to slow the development of GR populations. Biochar is known to be a promising material for the treatment of contaminants in wastewater and soil. In this research, wastewater samples collected at the tertiary stage from a WWTP located in the North Bohemia region of Czechia and containing 20 pharmaceutical contaminants were treated with the same biochar (wood and maize cob feedstocks, pyrolysis temperature of 470 °C), but of different doses (0.1 g L−1, 0.25 g L−1, 0.5 g L−1). In this case study, we aimed to verify the impacts of biochar application and/or concentration on the sorption of pharmaceuticals in water. The treated water was later used for irrigating planted (ryegrass taken as the plant model) and unplanted agricultural soils in a pot experiment. Soils and ryegrass samples were examined again for potential pharmaceutical existence, and the soil microbial activities were determined through fluorescein diacetate hydrolytic activities (FDHA). Results showed that most pharmaceuticals concentrations were significantly, but not totally, reduced from the wastewater upon biochar addition. Contaminants such as 3-hydroxycarbamazepine and metoprolol were entirely removed from the wastewater after 0.25 g L−1, whilst bezafibrate did not decline even at 0.5 g L−1. Moreover, the concentrations of pharmaceuticals in ryegrass biomass and soils were dominantly below detection limits or at very low doses. Finally, there were no significant differences in the microbial activities of the soils. This implicates that biochar could be approached as a good substrate for eliminating pharmaceuticals from wastewaters used for agricultural irrigation; however, more similar studies need to be carried out. Weeds are a major impediment to crop and pasture production and profitability in Australian farming systems, and knowledge of their occurrence is vital in devising weed management solutions. This study examined the relationships between weed and crop species from observations made during surveys of randomly selected fields in grain and/or pasture production. Between 2013 and 2017, 996 fields across New South Wales (NSW) were surveyed to record the occurrence and density of weed species. Annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) (69% of fields), wild oats (Avena spp.) (60%), and sowthistle (Sonchus oleraceus) (34%) were the most common species identified, with a total of 65 weed species recorded to be occurring in NSW cropping fields. Densities of occurring weeds were low, at one plant per square metre or less. Multiple species of wild oats were recorded, with their occurrence varying between survey regions; for example, Avena sterilis subsp. ludoviciana was more prevalent in the north and Avena fatua in the south. Differences in weed species occurrence were noted between this survey and those previously conducted in NSW, with marked increases in annual ryegrass and sowthistle, and this is attributed to the change in crop production practices between survey periods. The study of variable distribution patterns of weed species across cropping systems allows for informed decision-making regarding weed management research and development planning. Incorporating plantain with perennial ryegrass and white clover (RGWC) can improve the quality and quantity of grazing pastures; however, the sowing rate could affect the persistence of plantain, pasture yield, and nutritive value in different seasons. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of increasing sowing rates of plantain when established with RGWC on the dry matter (DM) yield, botanical composition, nutritive value, and bioactive compounds of the pasture over the first two years after sowing; and to determine the relationship between plantain content and nutritive characteristics in different seasons. The pasture treatments were RGWC, RGWC + low plantain rate (PLL), RGWC + medium plantain rate (PLM), and RGWC + high plantain rate (PLH). The results showed that annual DM yield was similar between treatments. The average plantain content (including leaves and reproductive stem) was 32, 44, and 48% in PLL, PLM, and PLH, respectively. The plantain composition increased in the first 15 months, then declined rapidly to about 20–30% at day 705 after sowing. Compared with RGWC, the plantain-RGWC pastures (PLL, PLM, PLH) had a higher content of organic matter digestibility (OMD), ash, starch, non-structural carbohydrates (NSC), P, S, Ca, Mg, Na, Cl, Zn, B, Co, aucubin, acteoside, and catalpol, while they contained a lower composition of DM%, acid detergent fibre (ADF), neutral detergent fibre (NDF), crude fat (CF), Fe, and Mn. These differences were linearly associated with the content of plantain leaves in the pasture and were higher in summer and autumn than in spring. In conclusion, incorporating plantain into the RGWC pasture can improve herbage nutritive quality, thus potentially increasing farm productivity and environmental benefits. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of grazing Lolium perenne (Lp) and Bromus valdivianus (Bv) on the average daily weight gain (ADG) and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) of Holstein Friesian heifers. Thirty heifers strip-grazed two pasture treatments (Lp and Bv) under a randomized complete block design (n = 3). Nutrient concentration and pasture intake were determined. Urine samples were taken, and the total volume of urine and microbial growth were estimated. Retained nitrogen (N), N intake, N excreted in feces and urine and the nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) were calculated. Lolium perenne showed greater WSC and ME but lower NDF than Bv, whereas crude and soluble protein were unaffected. There were no effects of species on ADG or feed conversion, and DMI was not affected by grass species, or the synthesis of microbial protein and purine derivatives. Ammonia in the rumen, urinary N and total N excreted were greater for heifers grazing Bv. In conclusion, the consumption of forage species did not alter the ADG or NUE of grazing heifers, but N partitioning was modified for heifers grazing Bv, due to the lower WSC/CP ratio compared with Lp. Salicylic acid (SA) is a plant growth regulator that can enhance the abiotic stress tolerance of plants; however, the physiological mechanisms are not yet fully understood. The objective of this study was to examine whether exogenous SA could enhance the salt tolerance of perennial ryegrass (Loliumperenne L.; PRG) and investigate the physiological underlying mechanisms. SA was applied to the foliage of PRG at five concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 mM). The SA-treated grass was grown under either control (0 mM NaCl) or salt stress (250 mM NaCl) conditions for 24 d. The SA treatments reduced the leaf electrolyte leakage (EL), malonaldehyde (MDA), and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content by 36%, 41%, and 40%, respectively, relative to the control under salt stress as measured at 24 d. The SA treatments also alleviated the decline in the leaf photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (gs), nitrate activity (NR), turfgrass quality (TQ) ratings, and chlorophyll (Chl) content under salt stress. In addition, exogenous SA increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and peroxidase (POD) as well as the expression levels of the Cyt Cu/ZnSOD, FeSOD, APX, CAT, and POD genes under salt stress. The results of this study suggested that the foliar application of SA at 0.25 and 0.5 mM may enhance photosynthesis and antioxidant defense systems and thus improve tolerance to salt stress in perennial ryegrass. Early adopter-farmers form a living lab of farms that have a great deal of hidden knowledge about the cultivation of cover crops (CCs). Understanding of how early adopters use and value CCs provides valuable knowhow to be shared with other farmers. This study gathered information about the most common under-sown CCs in Finland. A structured survey was used to collect farmers' experiences considering CCs' regional suitability, growth, competition, and impacts on soil and cash crop yields. The respondents were both conventional and organic farmers who cultivated CCs in 2020. One thousand one hundred and thirty farmers answered the survey. Four hundred and ten times they shared knowhow about the use of under-sown CCs. They were mostly familiar with clovers, ryegrasses, and timothy as CCs. They answered 27 specific statements on CC (a Likert scale, five answer choices). Farmers' experiences were well in line with the understanding gained from field experiments. Farmers had experienced positive impacts of CCs on soil health. Organic farmers were slightly more positive than conventional farmers. This is attributable to a longer period of having CCs in organic farms, and general differences in means to control weeds and manage crop nutrition. Gained experience with common species used in grassland mixtures had strengthened farmers' trust in their use of CCs. Farmers having high cereal areas are an important target group for sharing the early adopters' experiences, as cereal farmers were more challenged to use even common CCs. Future research and on-farm experiments should focus on CCs with other cash crops instead of cereals (grain legumes, rapeseed, and other minor crops). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In transition areas, cool season turfgrasses are overseeded in autumn to maintain the high quality of dormant warm season turfgrasses, while in spring several agronomic methods (scalping, coring, topdressing, verticutting, irrigation, and targeted fertilization) or chemical desiccation are adopted to remove the cool season turfgrasses from the stand. To reduce chemical applications, several methods of "thermal weeding" have been experimented with, but little is known about these methods in zoysiagrass (Zoysia spp. Willd) spring transition. A study was conducted at the University of Pisa, Italy, on Manila grass (Zoysia matrella (L.) Merr., cv "Diamond") (Zm) overseeded with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) (Lp) with the aim of comparing different methods of cool season grass suppression (scalping and hot foam) and different application rates of nitrogen. To assess treatment effect, green cover, turf quality, turf color, shoot density, and some vegetation indices (GLI, DGCI and NDVI) were determined. An average green cover of at least 90% was obtained on all plots seven weeks after the treatments. While scalping had minor effects on turf appearance and on polystand composition, hot foam had a stronger effect on turf color, green cover, and turf quality in the weeks following application. Once it had recovered from the hot foam treatments, the turf had a greater number of Zm shoots and a relevant reduction of Lp shoots. Carbon (C) cycling is crucial to agroecosystem functioning. Important determinants for the belowground C flow are soil food webs, with microorganisms and microfaunal grazers, i.e., nematodes, as key biota. The present study investigates the incorporation of plant-derived C into the nematode micro-food web under two different cropping systems, grassland (ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.)) and agroforest (willow (Salix schwerinii Wolf and Salix viminalis L)). To quantify the C flux from the plant into the soil micro-food web, grass and willow were pulse-labeled with 13CO2 and the incorporation of 13C into the nematode trophic groups was monitored 3, 7, 14 and 28 days after labeling. The natural stable isotope signals (13C/12C, 15N/14N) were analyzed to determine the structure of the nematode micro-food web. The natural isotopic δ15N signal revealed different trophic levels for omnivores and predators in grassland and agroforest soils. The incorporation of plant C into nematode tissue was detectable three days after 13CO2 labeling with the highest and fastest C allocation in plant feeders in grassland, and in fungal feeders in agroforest soil. C flux dynamics between the aboveground vegetation and belowground micro-food web varied with cropping system. This demonstrates that crop-specific translocation of C affects the multitrophic interactions in the root environment, which in turn can alter soil nutrient cycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of cultivar, nitrogen (N) rate, and biostimulant application on the chemical composition of the aboveground biomass of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). A small-area field experiment was established in the Agricultural Experiment Station in Tomaszkowo (53°42′40.8″ N 20°26′04.7″ E, north-eastern Poland). The experiment had a split-plot design with three replications, and the experimental variables were as follows: (i) perennial ryegrass cultivar: Bajka and Baronka, (ii) N fertilizer rate: 0, 120, 240 kg N ha−1, (iii) application of biostimulants: Blatt Boden-Foliar (BB-F) and Blatt Boden-Foliar + Blatt Boden-Multical (BB-F + BB-M). This study demonstrated that the tetraploid cultivar Baronka had a more desirable chemical composition than the diploid cultivar Bajka. The biomass of cv. Baronka had a higher content of CP, CF, and K, and it was characterized by higher leaf greenness (SPAD) values. Nitrogen fertilization considerably increased the content of CP, P, and K, and leaf greenness (SPAD) values in both cultivars, and the noted increase was higher when N was applied at 240 kg ha−1. The N fertilizer rate of 120 kg ha−1 led to a significant decrease in the average Ca content of plants, whereas the N fertilizer rate of 240 kg ha−1 had no significant effect on Ca concentration. The tested biostimulants significantly affected the chemical composition of perennial ryegrass biomass, and their influence was greater when they were applied in combination. The foliar application of Blatt Boden-Foliar and Blatt Boden-Multical increased the content of CP, P, and chlorophyll in perennial ryegrass leaves, whereas it decreased the accumulation of CF, K, and Ca in plants. The analyzed biostimulants had a positive effect on the chemical composition of perennial ryegrass biomass. This is an important practical consideration because high-quality green fodder for livestock can be produced while minimizing the use of mineral fertilizers and adverse environmental impacts. Repeated applications of the same herbicide(s), which are characterized by the same mode of action, increase selection pressure, which in turn favours the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds. Glufosinate is a broad-spectrum non-selective herbicide being used for weed control for many years around the world. Rigid ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaud.) is an economically important grass weed in Greece. Recent complaints by growers about control failure of rigid ryegrass with glufosinate require further investigation and have been the basis of this study. The objectives of this study were to confirm the existence of glufosinate-resistant L. rigidum in Greece and evaluate the effect of L. rigidum growth stage on glufosinate efficacy. Twenty populations of rigid ryegrass from Greece were sampled from five regions, and whole plant dose-response studies were conducted for five populations under controlled conditions with eight rates of glufosinate (0.0, 0.098, 0.187, 0.375, 0.75, 1.5, 3.0, and 6.0 kg a.i. ha-1). Glufosinate resistance was confirmed in three out of five populations with the level of resistance ranging from three-to seven-fold compared with the susceptible populations based on above-ground biomass reduction. Results also revealed that the level of glufosinate-resistance of rigid ryegrass was dependent on the growth stage at which it was applied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 'Grazing Utilization' sub-index within the Pasture Profit Index identifies perennial ryegrass varieties with high grazing efficiency. Grazing efficiency is assessed in plot trials conducted over a number of years. The objective of this study was to investigate the repeatability of variety grazing efficiency. Correlations were derived between variety performance in separate evaluation years and between variety performances in separate trials. Grazing efficiency was found to be moderately repeatable, with correlation values ranging from 0.47 to 0.86 between years and ranging from 0.51 to 0.84 between trials. The results will provide commercial seed companies with increased confidence when developing variety mixes intended for intensive grazing. Municipal wastewater is a valuable source of phosphorus (P) for the production of fertilizing products, such as microalgae (MA), crab carapace material (CCM), P salt produced by chemical leaching of sludge (P salt CL), and sewage sludge ash produced by pyrolysis and the incineration of sludge (SSA PI). This study compares the P availability of these fertilizing products in three planting substrates (S1, S2, and S3) during a four-month growth period of perennial ryegrass. The unfertilized control in substrate S3 had a high and available P that masked the effect of the added fertilizing products. The P salt CL fertilizer exhibited the lowest shoot dry matter in the alkaline S2 substrate. Still, it can be used as a good source of P in both acidic and alkaline substrates, given that its shoot P content was among the highest in all substrates tested. The organic-rich fertilizing products, MA and CCM, are better suited for acidic substrates since a pronounced reduction in the shoot yield and P content was seen in the alkaline S2 substrate. In contrast, for the SSA PI fertilizer, the very small differences in shoot dry matter and P content in S1 compared to S2 indicated that it is suitable for both acidic and alkaline substrates. Four months were needed to observe the maximum shoot yields treated with these P fertilizing products. Considering that the substrate solution P (using Rhizons) for the P salt CL and MA fertilizers proved to be similar to shoot P uptake, Rhizon extraction could be used for assessing P bioavailability. The chemical composition of novel products indicated their potential to deliver not only P, but also other nutrients to plants. However, concentrations of inorganic contaminants in all products, except CCM, pointed out a possibility to pollute the environment by applying these fertilizers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Perennial ryegrass (PRG) is an important forage grown on dairy farms in temperate regions globally, including south-eastern Australia. A forage value index (FVI) providing information on the seasonal production of commercially available PRG cultivars is currently available. Despite the importance of the nutritive value of pasture in dairy farm systems, the nutritive characteristics of PRG cultivars are not currently included in the FVI as they are not routinely measured in cultivar evaluation trials. This study investigated differences between cultivar functional groups (diploid and tetraploid). It also examined differences between individual cultivars within seasons at four locations in south-eastern Australia and examined how trial location affects cultivar ranking. Samples were collected from existing cultivar evaluation trials over a 3-year period and analysed for nutritive characteristics. There were differences (p < 0.05) between diploids and tetraploids for metabolisable energy (ME) and neutral detergent fibre (NDF) in each season at each location with a few exceptions in summer and autumn. Crude protein (CP) differed between functional groups in some seasons at some sites. Spearman rank correlations within season were strong for ME between trial locations (r = 0.78–0.96), moderate to high for NDF (0.51–0.86) and variable for CP (−0.69–0.56). These findings provide guidance on methods for implementing nutritive value testing in cultivar evaluation trials and support the imminent inclusion of ME in the Australian FVI. The ranking of cultivars for ME was more consistent across trial sites compared to NDF and CP, suggesting the latter two traits, in particular CP, are more sensitive to environmental influences. Based on these results, we do not recommend the inclusion of CP as an individual trait in the Australian FVI. A significantly larger dataset and further research on the genotype by environment interactions would be needed to reconsider this. Lolium spp. are troublesome weeds mainly found in winter cereal crops worldwide, including Europe. In recent years resistant mechanisms have been evolved to several important herbicides. In this study we investigated the mechanisms responsible for conferring glyphosate resistance in some Lolium spp. populations. A holistic approach was used, based on dose-response experiments, determination of shikimic acid concentration in plant leaf tissue, as well as molecular analyses. More specifically, in three Lolium spp. populations the existence of a mutation in the Pro-106 codon of the 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3 phosphate synthase (EPSPS) gene was investigated as well as the relative transcript levels of four ABC-transporter genes were monitored at three time points after glyphosate application. The results demonstrated that glyphosate resistance is a multifactor phenomenon. Relative transcript levels of the ABC-transporter genes were abundant at very early time points after glyphosate treatments. Dose-response experiments and shikimate analyses were in accordance with the findings of the quantitative PCR (qPCR) analyses. We suggest that relative expression ratio of ABC-transporter genes can be a useful tool to rapidly identify Lolium spp. populations resistant to glyphosate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

High doses of nitrogen (N) fertiliser input on permanent pastures are crucial in terms of N surplus and N losses. Quantitative analyses of the response of plant functional traits (PFT) driving crop growth rate (CGR) under low N input are lacking in frequently defoliated pastures. This study aimed to understand the significance of PFTs for productivity and N uptake in permanent grasslands by measuring dynamics in tiller density (TD), tiller weight (TW), leaf weight ratio (LWR), leaf area index (LAI), specific leaf area (SLA), as well as leaf N content per unit mass (LNCm) and per unit area (LNCa) in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne)-dominated pastures, in a simulated rotational grazing approach over two consecutive growing seasons. Annual N application rates were 0, 140 and 280 kg N ha−1. The phenological development of perennial ryegrass was the main driver of CGR, N uptake and most PFTs. The effect of N application rate on PFTs varied during the season. N application rate showed the greatest effect on TD, LAI and, to a lesser extent, on SLA and LNCm. The results of this study highlight the importance of TD and its role in driving CGR and N uptake in frequently defoliated permanent pastures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Periodic and repeated water scarcity has become an increasing concern on grasslands, causing not only to a reduction in productivity but also negative alterations in the carbon balance. The objective of this work was to comprehensively investigate some physiological performance traits of forage grasses, their roots morphometric features and distribution of biomass under simulated water deficit applied in different terms over a period of study. Plants were exposed to water shortage for 21 days, and then grown in optimal substrate moisture conditions. The gas exchange parameters and the main traits of root system architecture of three grass forage species and their cultivars were analyzed: Festulolium braunii (Richt.) A. Camus, cvs. Felopa and Sulino, Lolium perenne L., cvs. Bajka and Gagat and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. cvs. Odys and Rahela. Rapid decrease in the values of parameters related to the gas exchange process in grasses in the following days of water shortage was noticed. Water use efficiency (WUE) value was low in drought conditions due to increased transpiration of plants and was associated with a low C:N ratio in shoots. No obvious, positive effect of previously experienced drought stress on survival of tested grass species after another stress was observed. Cutting of plants after drought period most probably underlied the lack of memory and also additional factor weakened plant regrowth. When the drought was applied for the second time in spring during intensive plant growth, higher biomass allocation to the roots was observed. It was associated with the reduction of plant dry biomass, a decrease of carbon accumulation and the C:N ratio in the shoots. Due to the drought applied for the second time in summer, some biometric features of the roots were strongly and positively correlated with WUE, which is an important feature from the point of view of yield optimization and moisture use by plants. Soil–plant interactions affecting nitrous oxide (N2O) are not well-understood, and experimental data are scarce. Therefore, a greenhouse experiment was conducted in a 3 × 3 full factorial design, comprising three mineral N fertilizer rates (0, 150 and 300 kg N ha−1) applied to monoculture swards and a binary mixture of Plantago lanceolata and Lolium perenne. The parameters measured included daily N2O emissions, aboveground (AG) and belowground biomass (BG), N and C yields, as well as leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) activity in the soil as an indicator for soil microbial activity. Nitrous oxide emission and LAP were measured using the static chamber method and fluorimetric microplate assays, respectively. Cumulative N2O emissions were about two times higher for P. lanceolata than L. perenne monoculture swards or the mixture (p < 0.05). The binary mixtures also showed the highest N use efficiency and LAP activity, which significantly (p < 0.05) correlated with the C concentration in the belowground biomass. Plantago lanceolata was generally ineffective at reducing N2O emissions, probably due to the young age of the swards. Among the biological factors, N2O emission was significantly associated with biomass productivity, belowground C yield, belowground N use efficiency and soil microbial activity. Thus, the results suggested belowground resource allocation dynamics as a possible means by which swards impacted N2O emission from the soils. With global warming, high temperature stress has become a main threat to the growth of cool-season turfgrasses, including perennial ryegrass. As one of the conserved plant microRNA families, miR408s are known to play roles in various abiotic stresses, including cold, drought, salinity, and oxidative stress, but no report, thus far, was found for heat. Here, perennial ryegrass plants overexpressing rice Os-miR408 were used to investigate the role of miR408 in plant heat tolerance. Both wild type (WT) and miR408 transgenic perennial ryegrass plants (TG) were subjected to short-term heat stress at 38 °C for 72 h (experiment 1) or at 42 °C for 48 h (experiment 2), and then let recover for 7 days at optimum temperature. Morphological changes and physiological parameters, including antioxidative responses of TG and WT plants, were compared. The results showed that miR408 downregulated the expression of two putative target genes, PLASTOCYANIN and LAC3. Additionally, overexpression of Os-miR408 improved thermo-tolerance of perennial ryegrass, demonstrated by lower leaf lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage, and higher relative water content after both 38 and 42 °C heat stresses. In addition, the enhanced thermotolerance of TG plants could be associated with its morphological changes (e.g., narrower leaves, smaller tiller angles) and elevated antioxidative capacity. This study is the first that experimentally reported a positive role of miR408 in plant tolerance to heat stress, which provided useful information for further understanding the mechanism by which miR408 improved plant high-temperature tolerance, and offered a potential genetic resource for breeding heat-resistant cool-season turfgrass in the future. Barley grass (Hordeum spp.) is a short-lived annual weed which competes with preferred crop and pasture species and frequently contaminates wool and carcasses, and irritates the ears, eyes and noses of sheep. Barley grass, annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum L.) and wild radish (Raphanus raphanistrum L.) are annual winter crop weeds which reduce grain yield through competition. In three consecutive years (2015 to 2017) cereal, legume and cereal/legume forage crops were grown and harvested in early October, late October or early November consistent with an early silage harvest (ES), late silage harvest (LS) or hay cut (H). A spring wheat cultivar was sown over each site in the following year (2016 to 2018). Weed density was recorded during the forage crop and wheat phases. Forage crop weed populations varied between years. Late paddock preparation for sowing in 2015 effectively eradicated barley grass from all forage crops; however, the competitiveness of legume and cereal/legume crops against annual ryegrass was reduced. In contrast, legume and cereal/legume mixtures tended to have higher barley grass densities than cereal crops in 2016 and 2017, when paddock preparation was earlier. Cutting in October 2015 reduced annual ryegrass and wild radish populations in 2016 wheat by 92.0% and 86.7%, respectively. In 2017 and 2018, regrowth and subsequent seed set following cutting appeared to negate cutting time effects for all crop and crop/legume combinations. Late paddock preparation, an early October forage harvest and effective regrowth control provided the best opportunity for barley grass, annual ryegrass and wild radish control in a single year. Population models are particularly helpful for understanding long-term changes in the weed dynamics associated with integrated weed management (IWM) strategies. IWM practices for controlling L. rigidum are of high importance, mainly due to its widespread resistance that precludes chemical control as a single management method. The objective of this contribution is to simulate different IWM scenarios with special emphasis on the impact of different levels of barley sowing densities on L. rigidum control. To this effect, a weed–crop population model for both L. rigidum and barley life cycles was developed. Our results point out: (i) the necessity of achieving high control efficiencies (>99%), (ii) that the increase of twice the standard sowing density of barley resulted in a reduction of 23.7% of the weed density, (iii) non-herbicide-based individual methods, such as delayed sowing and weed seed removal at harvest, proved to be inefficient for reducing drastically weed population, (iv) the implementation of at least three control tactics (seed removal, delay sowing and herbicides) is required for weed infestation eradication independently of the sowing rate, and (v) the effect of an increase in the sowing density is diluted as a more demanding weed control is reached. Future research should aim to disentangle the effect of different weed resistance levels on L. rigidum population dynamics and the required efficiencies for more sustainable IWM programs. Cultivation of Miscanthus x giganteus L. (Mis) with annual harvest of biomass could provide an additional C source for farmers. To test the potential of Mis-C for immobilizing inorganic N from slurry or manure and as a C source for soil organic matter build-up in comparison to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) straw (WS), a greenhouse experiment was performed. Pot experiments with ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were set up to investigate the N dynamics of two organic fertilisers based on Mis at Campus Klein-Altendorf, Germany. The two fertilisers, a mixture of cattle slurry and Mis as well as cattle manure from Mis-bedding material resulted in a slightly higher N immobilisation. Especially at the 1st and 2nd harvest, they were partly significantly different compared with the WS treatments. The fertilisers based on Mis resulted in a slightly higher microbial biomass C and microbial biomass N and thus can be identified as an additional C source to prevent nitrogen losses and for the build-up of soil organic matter (SOM) in the long-term. Bromus valdivianus Phil. (Bv) is a water stress-tolerant species, but its competitiveness in a diverse pasture may depend on defoliation management and soil moisture levels. This glasshouse study examined the effect of three defoliation frequencies, based on accumulated growing degree days (AGDD) (250, 500, and 1000 AGDD), and two soil water levels (80–85% of field capacity (FC) and 20–25% FC) on Bv growth as monoculture and as a mixture with Lolium perenne L. (Lp). The treatments were applied in a completely randomised block design with four blocks. The above-ground biomass of Bv was lower in the mixture than in the monoculture (p ≤ 0.001). The Bv plants in the mixture defoliated more infrequently (1000 AGDD) showed an increase in root biomass under 20–25% FC compared to 80–85% FC, with no differences measured between soil water levels in the monoculture. Total root length was highest in the mixture with the combination of infrequent defoliation and 20–25% FC. Conversely, frequent defoliation treatments resulted in reduced water-soluble carbohydrate reserves in the tiller bases of plants (p ≤ 0.001), as they allocated assimilates mainly to foliage growth. These results provide evidence that B. valdivianus can increase its competitiveness relative to Lp through the enhancement of the root growth and the energy reserve in the tiller base under drought conditions and infrequent defoliation in a mixture. Accumulating herbage mass to facilitate the extension of the grazing season in autumn is commonly practised. The objective of the current study was to investigate the effect of accumulating varying target herbage masses (THM) in autumn and imposing different defoliation dates (DD), on herbage mass, sward quality and water-soluble carbohydrates in autumn and the subsequent spring. A 4 × 3 factorial split plot design was assigned with four THM (Low ≈ 500 kg·DM·ha−1, Medium ≈ 1500 kg·DM·ha−1, High ≈ 2000 kg·DM·ha−1 and Very high ≈ 3000 kg·DM·ha−1) and three DD (DD1—15 October, DD2—7 November and DD3—21 November), across two years. Measurements were carried out at each DD and in spring. Differences in sward quality were found between each THM on different DD. Sward quality reduced from DD2 to DD3 in the high THM (−13 g·kg−1 DM CP, p < 0.001). The very high THM had the lowest sward quality from DD1 (206 g·kg−1 DM CP, p < 0.001 and 787 g·kg−1 DM DMD, p < 0.05). Climate change calls for novel approaches to include environmental effects in future breeding programs for forage crops. A set of ryegrasses (Lolium) varieties was evaluated in multiple European environments for crown rust (Puccinia coronata f. sp. lolii) and stem rust (P. graminis f. sp. graminicola) resistance. Additive Main Effect and Multiplicative Interaction (AMMI) analysis revealed significant genotype (G) and environment (E) effects as well as the interaction of both factors (G × E). Genotypes plus Genotype-by-Environment interaction (GGE) analysis grouped the tested environments in multiple mega-environments for both traits suggesting the presence of an environmental effect on the ryegrasses performances. The best performing varieties in the given mega-environments showed high resistance to crown as well as stem rust, and overall, tetraploid varieties performed better than diploid. Furthermore, we modeled G × E using a marker x environment interaction (M × E) model to predict the performance of varieties tested in some years but not in others. Our results showed that despite the limited number of varieties, the high number of observations allowed us to predict both traits' performances with high accuracy. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of compost produced with agricultural residues and oat-based biochar, iron oxide and halloysite nanoparticles as additives of the process of composting on soil chemical properties, nutrient status and growth of ryegrass Lolium perenne L. For this, a 90-day mesocosm experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions. Bare soil and a basal fertilization treatment were compared to soils amended with nonadditive compost (NA compost), compost supplied with oat-based biochar (Bioch compost), iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe compost), and halloysite nanoparticles (Ha compost). Compost supplied with nanoparticles and biochar combined were also considered. The incorporation of compost with or without additives increased the content of total C and N in soil, with N diminishing (total and mineral forms) and C/N modifications after 90 days. The addition of compost and co-composted treatments also increased the total contents of main nutrients such as Ca, K, P and S. Furthermore, the supply of additives into composting did not increase the concentration of trace toxic elements. At the end of the experiment, plant biomass increased by the addition of the different organic amendments, with the highest shoot biomass in soils amended with compost supplied with nanoparticles. These results suggest that the addition of compost based on agricultural residues with additives such as halloysite or biochar improves chemical properties and nutritional status of soil that favor and increase plant growth of Lollium perenne stablished in soils from the Mediterranean Region. The thermal time, expressed in accumulated growing degree-days (AGDD), was used as a predictor to describe and simulate the independent growth of two pasture crops, Lolium perenne L. and Bromus valdivianus Phil. Two sinusoidal models (four-parameter Logistic and Gompertz) were applied to the growth variables (total leaf blade length per tiller—LBL, and accumulated herbage mass—AHM). The nutritive value of pastures was predicted and modeled using regression equations (linear and quadratic), depending on each nutrient. Data for modeling were collected from a two-year study, in which LBL, AHM, and nutritive value variables for L. perenne and B. valdivianus pastures were measured at three-day intervals. Defoliation was determined according to the AGDD, such that the swards were defoliated at 90, 180, 270, 360, and 450 AGDD. The Logistic and Gompertz models presented similar values for the growth rate (GR) parameters, superior asymptote (Asup), inferior asymptote (Ainf), and point of maximum growth (Pmax). In both species, the maximum growth was 260 AGDD. The GR was similar for both species in different seasons of the year, but the maximum AHM varied, with B. valdivianus presenting a higher value (+1500 kg DM ha−1) than L. perenne during the spring. The regressions accurately described the nutritive value, demonstrating a positive linear relationship between the AGDD and concentrations of neutral and acid detergent fiber (NDF, ADF), an inverse linear relationship with crude protein (CP), and a quadratic relationship with metabolizable energy (ME) and water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentration. This study examines the effectiveness of a model called LINGRA-N-Plus to simulate the interaction of climate, soil and management on the green leaf and total dry matter yields of ryegrass in England and Wales. The LINGRA-N-Plus model includes modifications of the LINGRA-N model such as temperature- and moisture-dependent soil nitrogen mineralization and differential partitioning to leaves and stems with thermal time from the last harvest. The resulting model was calibrated against the green leaf and total grass yields from a harvest interval x nitrogen application experiment described by Wilman et al. (1976). When the LINGRA-N-Plus model was validated against total grass yields from nitrogen experiments at ten sites described by Morrison et al. (1980), its modelling efficiency improved greatly compared to the original LINGRA-N. High predicted yields, at zero nitrogen application, were related to soils with a high initial nitrogen content. The lowest predicted yields occurred at sites with low rainfall and shallow rooting depth; mitigating the effect of drought at such sites increased yields by up to 4 t ha−1. The results highlight the usefulness of grass models, such as LINGRA-N-Plus, to explore the combined effects of climate, soil, and management, like nitrogen application, and harvest intervals on grass productivity. Construction and demolition fines (C&D-fines) and green waste compost (GWC) are two commonly generated urban waste materials that represent repositories of geochemical value. Here technosols were produced from volumetric mixtures of these materials ranging from 0–100% C&D-fines, with the remaining proportion comprised of GWC. Agronomic assessment was carried out by way of pot and rhizobox plant growth experiments with ryegrass, barley and pea to determine germination, plant mass and rooting behaviours. Geochemical and mineralogical evaluation was achieved by soil pore water solution measurements combined with X-ray powder diffraction analyses respectively, to characterise the technosols and their distinct deviations from a reference agricultural geogenic soil (soil). The results demonstrated that germination, growth and root mass/surface area of vegetation were up to 80-fold greater after 30-days in the technosol composed of equal volumes of the two materials (50% C&D-fines: 50% GWC) compared to the soil. High concentrations of Ca and Mg in pore waters (550–800 mg·L−1) were dominant features of the technosols, in contrast to the soil (<50 mg·L−1), resulting from gypsum and calcite enrichment of the C&D-fines. In contrast, the GWC represented a source of soluble K (450–1000·mg·L−1). Highly elevated Ca concentrations in extended leaching tests of the C&D-fines reflected ongoing gypsum dissolution, whereas soluble Mg and K were rapidly depleted from the GWC. In summary, short-term performance of the technosols as plant growth substrates was strong despite their geochemical and mineralogical distinction from soil. Gleaning additional geochemical value from combining urban wastes in this way is potentially suited to myriad scenarios where geogenic soils are contaminated, sealed or otherwise absent. To cope with the growing population, there is a growing demand for more land to be rendered cultivable. A complex soil created by applying soft rocks into sandy soil can be cultivated. However, the strong water-retaining ability and extreme poverty in nutrients of this complex soil has a negative effect on plant growth. To solve this problem, a complex of microbes and bacterial manure (BM) was added to the complex soil. The soil column culture test was used to detect the influence of BM application on soil bulk-density and infiltration parameters, and a pot experiment was conducted to evaluate its effect on the physical and chemical properties of soil, and ryegrass growth. The addition of 0.15% of BM to the complex soil decreased soil bulk-density, and increased the wetting front migration distance and soil hydraulic conductivity. The BM application also increased soil enzyme activities, which increased the available nitrogen and phosphorus content. As a result, BM increased the ryegrass root and shoot biomass. Overall, this study indicates that BM could be used as an eco-friendly sandy soil conditioner for improving the quality of complex soils, thereby, sustaining agricultural production in arid and semi-arid regions. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of cultivar, nitrogen (N) rate and harvest time on the content of water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), crude protein (CP) and the WSC:CP ratio in the aboveground biomass of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). A small-area field experiment was conducted in the Agricultural Experiment Station in Tomaszkowo (53°42′40.8″ N 20°26′04.7″ E, north-eastern Poland). Data were presented for three years of full utilization (2013–2015). The experimental factors were as follows: (i) perennial ryegrass cultivar: Bajka and Baronka, (ii) N rate (kg ha−1): 0, 120, and 240, and (iii) harvest time: 8.00–10.00 a.m., 12.00–2.00 p.m., and 4.00–6.00 p.m. The tetraploid cultivar Baronka had higher WSC content and lower CP content on a dry matter (DM) basis than the diploid cultivar Bajka (by approx. 3% on average). An increase in N fertilizer rate to 240 kg ha−1 contributed to a decrease in WSC concentrations by 23% in cv. Bajka and by 19% in cv. Baronka, and to an increase in the CP content of aboveground biomass by 32% and 23%, respectively. Both cultivars accumulated significantly higher WSC amounts when biomass was harvested at noon and in the afternoon than in the morning. The CP content of biomass was also affected by harvest time, and it was higher in cv. Bajka when harvesting was carried out at 12.00–2.00 p.m. and 4.00–6.00 p.m., and in cv. Baronka when harvesting was carried out at 4.00–6.00 p.m. The WSC:CP ratio in the biomass of the analyzed cultivars was within the optimal range for ruminants, and it was higher in cv. Baronka (1:1.11). Nitrogen applied at 240 kg ha−1 had a negative influence on the WSC:CP ratio, decreasing its value by around 36% (relative to the rate of 120 kg N ha−1) and around 35% (relative to the unfertilized treatment). Increasing environmental pollution causes the search for new methods of purification. Currently, the remediation potential of nanoparticles is increasingly being studied. Unfortunately, there is still a lack of data on the impact of these compounds on living organisms, including plants. This study was designed to test the effects of nanoFER 25 and nanoFER 25S iron on Lolium westerwoldicum Breakw. After cultivation of plants in a soil contaminated with nanoparticles, the biometric parameters, content of polyphenols, flavonoids, chlorophyll changes, carotenoids, anthocyanins, superoxide dismutase, catalase and pyrogallol peroxidase were studied. The conducted experiment showed that nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is slightly taken from the soil to the plants. The iron passes to the root but there is no further transport up the plant. The content of polyphenols and flavonoids in aboveground parts of plants decreases with a simultaneous increase in roots compared to the control sample. The chlorophyll content in the leaves is strongly related to the concentration of the contaminant. Similarly, the enzyme activity of the antioxidant system in the whole plant is strongly related to the concentration of the pollutant. The amount of vegetable pigments in the leaves increases for low concentrations of contamination and then decreases at higher levels of contamination. The species belonging to the genus Echinochloa represent the main weeds in rice fields worldwide. Heavy soils are especially appropriate for this crop that is often grown in monoculture. A drought period in 2012 impeded farmers from sowing rice in some parts of the region of Aragon (northeastern Spain) and, unusually, they seeded alternative crops such as winter cereal, fescue (Festuca arundinacea), ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and lucerne (Medicago sativa). A total of 20 fields were selected, in which rice had been grown in monocrop until 2011 and several crop sequences were established afterwards; weed vegetation was recorded in spring, summer and autumn 2014-16 to find out if the crop rotations reduced weed infestations. Winter cereal and fescue were the crops with the highest soil cover; ryegrass and lucerne had difficulties in installation probably due to the heavy soil textures. Echinochloa spp. plants were found in the winter cereal stubble after having grown fescue for the previous two years and rice before that; in the forage fields, small plants of earing Echinochloa spp. adapted to mowing were detected. Recommendations for Integrated Weed Management that arise from the observations are ploughing the winter cereal stubble before seed shed of the emerged Echinochloa plants, assuring a high density of the forage crops, and efficient herbicide control in rice fields. Remote sensing-based evapotranspiration (ET) models with various levels of sophistication have emerged recently with the possibilities of user-defined model calibrations. Their application for water resources management and climate studies from regional to global scale has been rapidly increasing, which makes it important to validate field scale ET in a complex crop assemblage before operational use. Based on in situ flux-tower measurements by the eddy-covariance (EC) system, this study tested three single-source energy balance models for estimating daily ET from fennel/maize/ryegrass-clover cropland rotations in a Mediterranean context in southern Italy. The sensitivity of three user-friendly ET models (SEBS, QWaterModel, and METRIC-EEFlux) with reference to the EC system over a center pivot irrigated cropland is discussed in detail. Results in terms of statistical indicators revealed that SEBS and METRIC-EEFlux showed reasonable agreements with measured ET (r2 = 0.59SEBS, RMSE = 0.71 mm day−1; r2 = 0.65METRIC, RMSE = 1.13 mm day−1) in terms of trends and magnitudes. At 30 m spatial resolution, both models were able to capture the in-field variations only during the maize development stage. The presence of spurious scan lines due to sensor defects in Landsat L7 ETM+ can contribute to the qualities of the METRIC-Efflux's ET product. In our observation, the QWaterModel did not perform well and showed the weakest congruency (r2 = 0.08QWaterModel) with ground-based ET estimates. In a nutshell, the study evaluated these automated remote sensing-based ET estimations and suggested improvements in the context of a generic approach used in their underlying algorithm for robust ET retrievals in rotational cropland ecosystems.
