Leaf spot, a major apple disease, manifests in diverse symptoms. In this study, the pathogen was isolated from diseased 'Yanfu 3' apple leaves in Yantai, Shandong Province, and identified as Neopestalotiopsis clavispora through morphological observation, molecular identification, and multi-gene (ITS, TEF1α, and TUB2) phylogenetic analysis. Three isolates (YTNK01, YTNK02, and YTNK03) were selected for pathogenicity tests to verify Koch's postulates. To our knowledge, this is the first report of N. clavispora being responsible for apple leaf spots in China, and the disease has been named 'apple Neopestalotiopsis leaf spot'. Additionally, N. clavispora was found to infect crabapple, sweet cherry, grape, peach, and pear under laboratory conditions, indicating that these fruit trees may be potential hosts for N. clavispora in the field. The in vitro toxicity of ten fungicides to the pathogen was assessed using the mycelial growth rate method. All ten fungicides were effective in inhibiting the growth of N. clavispora. Among them, those based on pylocyanonitrile, propiconazole, pyraclostrobin, tebuconazole, diphenoxazole, and osthole showed higher toxicity to N. clavispora, with EC50 values of 0.11, 0.41, 0.47, 1.32, 1.85, and 3.82 µg/mL, respectively. These fungicides could be used as alternatives to prevent this disease in production. Overall, these findings provide valuable insights into the characteristics of N. clavispora causing apple leaf spot and are crucial for developing effective management strategies. Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) is a perennial fruit tree, and the fruit of kiwifruit is economically and nutritionally important worldwide. To date, approximately 23 species of kiwifruit viruses have been reported worldwide. As for the detection method for kiwifruit viruses, previous reports mostly used the single RT-PCR detection method. In the detection of kiwifruit viruses, multiplex RT-PCR has the advantages of being fast, reliable and inexpensive. In this study, a stable, efficient and reliable multiplex RT-PCR method for the detection of the five most common kiwifruit viruses was established. The concentrations of Mg2+ and HS-Taq and the annealing temperature in the multiplex PCR system were optimized. The results indicate that the optimal annealing temperature was 56 °C; the optimal concentration of added Mg2+ was 2 mM; and the optimal concentration of HS-Taq was 1.0 U/μL. The stability of the optimized multiplex RT-PCR system was verified by field sample testing, and the results showed that the multiplex RT-PCR system was stable, efficient and reliable. An excess of selenium (Se) can cause toxicity to plants. Treatment with melatonin (MT) can alleviate the stress conditions in plants. Limited research exists on the impact of MT on Se stress and uptake in fruit trees. To address Se stress and enhance Se accumulation in Cyphomandra betacea Sendt. (Solanum betaceum Cav.), the effects of exogenous MT (50–200 µmol L−1) on C. betacea growth and Se accumulation under Se stress were studied. MT increased the biomass, photosynthetic pigments levels, and peroxidase activity of C. betacea under Se stress. Only at concentrations of 150 and 200 µmol L−1 did MT increase superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, as well as soluble protein content in C. betacea leaves. MT treatment also boosted the Se content and bioconcentration factor of C. betacea under Se stress while reducing the translocation factor. The dose of MT was directly related to the Se content, and the highest levels of Se in roots and shoots were observed at 150 µmol L−1, which was an increase of 114% and 60%, respectively, compared with the control. In addition, correlation, principal component, cluster, grey, and path analyses revealed a strong correlation between root Se content and shoot biomass with the shoot Se content. Therefore, MT treatment can mitigate Se stress and enhance Se uptake in C. betacea, and the most effective dose of MT is 150 µmol L−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of precision agriculture requires unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect diverse data, such as RGB images, 3D point clouds, and hyperspectral images. Recently, convolutional networks have made remarkable progress in downstream visual tasks, while often disregarding the trade-off between accuracy and speed in UAV-based segmentation tasks. The study aims to provide further valuable insights using an efficient model named Taoism-Net. The findings include the following: (1) Prescription maps in agricultural UAVs requires pixel-level precise segmentation, with many focusing solely on accuracy at the expense of real-time processing capabilities, being incapable of satisfying the expectations of practical tasks. (2) Taoism-Net is a refreshingly segmented model, overcoming the challenges of complexity in deep learning, based on minimalist design, which is used to generate prescription maps through pixel level classification mapping of geodetic coordinates (the lychee tree aerial dataset in Guangdong is used for experiments). (3) Compared with mainstream lightweight models or mature segmentation algorithms, Taoism-Net achieves significant improvements, including an improvement of at least 4.8% in mIoU, and manifested a superior performance in the accuracy–latency curve. (4) "The greatest truths are concise" is a saying widely spread by ancient Taoism, indicating that the most fundamental approach is reflected through the utmost minimalism; moreover, Taoism-Net expects to a build bridge between academic research and industrial deployment, for example, UAVs in precision agriculture. In an unmanned orchard, various tasks such as seeding, irrigation, health monitoring, and harvesting of crops are carried out by unmanned vehicles. These vehicles need to be able to distinguish which objects are fruit trees and which are not, rather than relying on human guidance. To address this need, this study proposes an efficient and robust method for fruit tree detection in orchard point cloud maps. Feature extraction is performed on the 3D point cloud to form a two-dimensional feature vector containing three-dimensional information of the point cloud and the tree target is detected through the customized deep learning network. The impact of various feature extraction methods such as average height, density, PCA, VFH, and CVFH on the detection accuracy of the network is compared in this study. The most effective feature extraction method for the detection of tree point cloud objects is determined. The ECA attention module and the EVC feature pyramid structure are introduced into the YOLOv8 network. The experimental results show that the deep learning network improves the precision, recall, and mean average precision by 1.5%, 0.9%, and 1.2%, respectively. The proposed framework is deployed in unmanned orchards for field testing. The experimental results demonstrate that the framework can accurately identify tree targets in orchard point cloud maps, meeting the requirements for constructing semantic orchard maps. Accurate nitrogen fertilizer management determines the yield and quality of fruit trees, but there is a lack of multispectral UAV-based nitrogen fertilizer monitoring technology for orchards. Therefore, in this study, a field experiment was conducted by UAV to acquire multispectral images of an apple orchard with dwarf stocks and dense planting in southern Xinjiang and to estimate the nitrogen content of canopy leaves of apple trees by using three machine learning methods. The three inversion methods were partial least squares regression (PLSR), ridge regression (RR), and random forest regression (RFR). The results showed that the RF model could significantly improve the accuracy of estimating the leaf nitrogen content of the apple tree canopy, and the validation set of the four periods of apple trees ranged from 0.670 to 0.797 for R2, 0.838 mg L−1 to 4.403 mg L−1 for RMSE, and 1.74 to 2.222 for RPD, among which the RF model of the pre-fruit expansion stage of the 2023 season had the highest accuracy. This paper shows that the apple tree leaf nitrogen content estimation model based on multispectral UAV images constructed by using the RF machine learning method can timely and accurately diagnose the growth condition of apple trees, provide technical support for precise nitrogen fertilizer management in orchards, and provide a certain scientific basis for tree crop growth. The lack of high-spectral and high-resolution remote sensing data is impeding the differentiation of various fruit tree species that share comparable spectral and spatial features, especially for evergreen broadleaf trees in tropical and subtropical areas. Here, we propose a novel decision tree approach to map the spatial distribution of fruit trees at a 10 m spatial resolution based on the growth stage features extracted from Sentinel-1A (S-1A) time-series synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. This novel method was applied to map the spatial distribution of fruit trees in Maoming City, which is known for its vast cultivation of fruit trees, such as litchi, citrus, and longan. The results showed that the key to extracting information on the distribution of fruit trees lies in the fact that the fruit ripening and expansion period attenuates the information on the vegetation of fruit trees, a characteristic of the reproductive period. Under VH polarization, different fruit tree growth stage traits were more separable and easier to distinguish. The optimal features, such as H v (high valley value of the 14 May, 26 May, and 7 June SAR data), T b (difference between the 7 June and 14 January SAR data), Cr (high valley value of the 13 July, 25 July, and 6 August SAR data), and L o (high valley value of the 23 September, 17 October, and 11 November SAR data), were constructed based on the optimal window. The thresholds for these features were set to 1, 1, 1.5, and 1, respectively. The classification model can effectively distinguish different fruit trees and extract distribution information with overall accuracy (OA) of 90.34% and a Kappa coefficient of 0.84. Optimal fruit production from many tree crops relies on the transfer of cross-pollen between trees of different cultivars rather than the transfer of self-pollen between trees of the same cultivar. However, many orchards are established with wide blocks of single cultivars, which can result in high percentages of self-fertilised fruit and sub-optimal yield and quality. We aimed to determine whether outcrossing rates and yield of Hass avocado fruit decline with increasing distance from polliniser trees of cultivar Shepard and whether selfed fruit are smaller than outcrossed fruit. Outcrossing rates declined from 49% at six trees (40 m) from a block of Shepard trees to 30% at thirty trees (160 m) from a block of Shepard trees. Tree yield across this distance declined by 44% as a result of a 69% decline in the number of outcrossed fruit per tree, without a significant decline in the number of selfed fruit per tree. Outcrossed Hass fruit were 12% heavier than selfed Hass fruit, with 3% greater diameter and 5% greater length. Orchard thinning can avoid biennial bearing and improve fruit quality, which is a necessary agronomic section in orchard management. The existing methods of artificial fruit thinning and chemical spraying are no longer suitable for the development of modern agriculture. With the continuous acceleration of the construction process of modern orchards, blossom thinning mechanization has become an inevitable trend in the development of the orchard flower and fruit management. Based on relevant reports in the past 20 years, the paper discusses the current level of development of mechanized blossom thinning technologies and equipment in orchards from three aspects: mechanism research, machine development, and intelligent upgrading. Firstly, for thinning mechanism research, three directions were investigated: the rope flexible hitting force, thinning agronomic requirements, and the fruit tree growth model between thinning and fruit yields. Secondly, for marketable machine developments, two types of machines were investigated: the hand-held thinner and tractor-mounted thinner. The hand-held thinner is mainly suitable for traditional old orchards with a messy canopy structure, especially in the interior and top of the canopy. The tractor-mounted thinner is mainly suitable for orchards with the same crown structure, such as the hedge type, trunk type, and V-type. Thirdly, for equipment intelligent upgrading, the research of the intelligent detection algorithm for inflorescence on the fruit tree was investigated, for species including the apple, pear, citrus, grape, litchi, mango, and apricot. Finally, combining the advantages and disadvantages of the research, the authors propose thoughts and prospects, which can provide a reference for the design and applications of orchard mechanized blossom thinning. Bud dormancy enables deciduous fruit trees to endure unfavorable conditions during winter, and considerably impacts growth and reproduction in spring. We investigated acid invertase activities during dormancy release until bud break under natural (orchard) conditions in two consecutive years. Our aim was to relate the activity patterns to the developmental progression and to air temperature, which is a major factor influencing the developmental processes at that stage. The enzyme assays were performed on extracts from leaf buds of the cultivar Idared, sampled from early March to April in the years 2020 and 2021. The air temperature was continually monitored during the observation periods. cwINV activity showed a trend of slight increase at the earlier developmental stages and sharply increased during bud break in both years. cwINV is known to contribute to organ sink strength. Its up-regulation may, therefore, be related to the increasing developmental demand for carbohydrates in apple leaf buds during dormancy release until bud break. vacINV activity was relatively constant at the earlier stages and also showed a pronounced increase in activity during bud break in both years. However, in both years, we observed drops in vacINV activity following cold spells. vacINV activity has been associated with growth via cell elongation through the regulation of cell turgor and may, thus, be involved in bud break. Therefore, we suggest that the down-regulation of vacINV activity as a consequence of cold spells might contribute to a delay in bud break to protect young leaf tissues from exposure to cold stress conditions. Girdling is an important means of improving the yield and quality of jujube trees, but this measure can easily cause injury, or even death, to jujube trees. A technology for increasing yield and improving quality, based on local thermal damage of jujube bark, is proposed to address a series of issues in current jujube-tree-girdling technology. First, we measured the thermophysical parameters of jujube bark and established a heat-transfer model for jujube bark. Then, in order to investigate the impact of local thermal damage on jujube-tree yield and fruit quality, local heating experiments were conducted on jujube-tree bark, using the heat-transfer model. The experimental results indicated that heating the jujube bark at a certain temperature for an appropriate time can effectively improve the yield and quality of jujube fruit. Compared with traditional girdling techniques, this method has less impact on the health of jujube trees and does not form permanent wounds on them. The imbalance of the soil microbiome is a primary indicator of ARD (apple replant disease). Biofumigation is a treatment that enables the restoration of microbiome balance. This study involved an analysis of the taxonomic and functional diversity of bacterial communities in replanted soil (ARD), in replanted soils with forecrops of French marigold (Tagetes patula L.), white mustard (Sinapis alba), and oilseed radish (Raphanus sativus var. oleifera), and in agricultural soil. The biofumigation treatment with phytosanitary plants changed the structure and abundance of the replanted soil microbiome in a fruit tree nursery. The count of operational taxonomic units (OTU) of the Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Patescibacteria, Chloroflexi, and Verrucomicrobiota phyla increased, whereas the count of the Firmicutes, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota phyla decreased. Biofumigation caused an increase in the content of some dominant bacterial genera, such as Flavobacterium, Massila, Sphingomonas, Arenimonas, and Devosia, in the replanted soil. Their presence in the soil may improve the growth of plants, induce their systemic resistance, and thus improve the production properties of soil with ARD. The accurate and rapid acquisition of fruit tree canopy parameters is fundamental for achieving precision operations in orchard robotics, including accurate spraying and precise fertilization. In response to the issue of inaccurate citrus tree canopy segmentation in complex orchard backgrounds, this paper proposes an improved DeepLabv3+ model for fruit tree canopy segmentation, facilitating canopy parameter calculation. The model takes the RGB-D (Red, Green, Blue, Depth) image segmented canopy foreground as input, introducing Dilated Spatial Convolution in Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling to reduce computational load and integrating Convolutional Block Attention Module and Coordinate Attention for enhanced edge feature extraction. MobileNetV3-Small is utilized as the backbone network, making the model suitable for embedded platforms. A citrus tree canopy image dataset was collected from two orchards in distinct regions. Data from Orchard A was divided into training, validation, and test set A, while data from Orchard B was designated as test set B, collectively employed for model training and testing. The model achieves a detection speed of 32.69 FPS on Jetson Xavier NX, which is six times faster than the traditional DeepLabv3+. On test set A, the mIoU is 95.62%, and on test set B, the mIoU is 92.29%, showing a 1.12% improvement over the traditional DeepLabv3+. These results demonstrate the outstanding performance of the improved DeepLabv3+ model in segmenting fruit tree canopies under different conditions, thus enabling precise spraying by orchard spraying robots. The fruit agribusiness sector is one of the most dynamic in Colombia. Within this sector, avocado and mango are of great importance, both in terms of area planted and volume exported. Increasing the productivity, quality, and postharvest life of these fruits is a priority, due to the high losses that occur in the preharvest and postharvest stages. One current alternative to achieve this are biostimulants, which have the potential to improve the productivity and quality of fruit. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the preharvest application of two biostimulants on the yield and quality of avocados and mangos. The study was carried out in production systems for cv. Hass avocado (traditional and organic) and cv. Keitt mango (traditional). In each system, two treatments were evaluated: conventional and conventional + biostimulant. Under field conditions, yield and quality variables such as weight, number of fruits, visual appearance, and size were determined. In postharvest, the fruits obtained from preharvest treatments were subjected to two storage conditions (6 and 20 °C) during the ripening process. Postharvest quality variables such as respiration, ethylene rates, weight loss, color index, firmness, total soluble solids, and titratable acidity were evaluated. The results indicated that the use of biostimulants caused a significant increase (p ≤ 0.05) in the yield, number of fruits, and preharvest quality parameters of size and weight, without negatively affecting the postharvest quality of the fruits. The biostimulant increases the total weight of fruits in organic and conventional avocado by ~55 and 25%, respectively, while in mango, this figure increased by ~23%. Although mulching is a widely used agronomic practice, its effects on the rhizosphere remain poorly understood. Here, we employed amplicon and transcriptomic sequencing to investigate variations in a grapevine rhizosphere system under mulch treatment (rice straw + felt + plastic film). Analyzing 16S and intergenic spacer (ITS) rRNA sequences indicated that the Shannon and Simpson indices of the bacterial and fungal communities increased markedly under mulch treatment. The bacterial and fungal compositions varied significantly between the control and mulch treatments. Mulching enriched for potentially beneficial microbes that confer disease resistance to plants or participate in nitrogen metabolism (Kaistobacter, Ammoniphilus, Lysobacter, Ammoniphilus, Alicyclobacillus, Aquicella, Nitrospira, Chaetomium, and Microascus), whereas more potentially pathogenic microbes (Fusarium and Gibberella) were detected in the control. Moreover, certain bacteria and fungi exhibited different correlations with the root transcriptome functions of the MEBlue module. The complexity of the bacterial and fungal co-occurrence networks increased with higher node numbers, positive and negative links after mulching. Following mulching, the rhizosphere showed elevated pH, organic matter, and catalase activities, and decreased sucrase and cellulase and β-glucosidase activities. Our results provide comprehensive data showing how a grapevine rhizosphere system responded to mulching treatment and shed important insight into mulching practices for fruit trees. 13C discrimination (Δ13C) has been used in research as an indicator of water availability in crops; however, few data are available concerning fruit trees. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of irrigation on the Δ13C values of apple leaves. We assumed that Δ13C would increase with irrigation intensity. The Δ13C of apple trees (Malus domestica) cv. 'Red Jonaprince' was determined in the years 2019–2022. Leaf samples were collected in spring, in June, at the beginning of the irrigation campaign, and in autumn, in September, following the harvest. The irrigation doses were applied to replenish the water consumption, 0% (ET0), 50% (ET50), 75% (ET75), and 100% (ET100), of the calculated evapotranspiration (ET) levels. In November, the leaves collected from different positions on the shoots were sampled, assuming the Δ13C signature would reflect the changes occurring in the water supply during their growth. The irrigation rates had a significant effect on the Δ13C of the leaves when the data for the spring and summer months were pooled. On average, Δ13C increased from 20.77‰ and 20.73‰ for ET0 and ET50, respectively, to 20.80‰ and 20.95‰ for ET75 and ET100, respectively. When the data obtained for the spring and summer months were analysed separately, the effect of irrigation was weak (p < 0.043). The Δ13C value was always higher for treatment ET100 than treatment ET0, for individual experimental years and terms; however, the differences were minor and mostly insignificant. The leaf position had a strong significant effect on Δ13C; the values gradually decreased from the leaves growing from two-years-old branches (22.50‰) to the youngest leaves growing at the top of the current year's shoots (21.07‰). This order was similar for all the experimental years. The results of the experiment suggest that 13C discrimination in apples is affected not only by water availability during growth, but also by the use of C absorbed in previous years. Bacterial canker, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae and pv. morsprunorum, is one of the most important diseases of stone fruit trees (Prunus spp.). The pathogen infects buds, flowers, fruitlets, leaves and shoots, from which the disease spreads to the branches, boughs and trunks, causing necrosis and cankers. The efficacy of different chemical and biological products for the control of bacterial canker on stone fruit trees was tested in 2018–2021. The experiments were conducted in sour cherry, plum and sweet cherry orchards in central Poland. Foliar application of the tested preparations was performed three times a season. The biological efficacy of the tested products in the control of bacterial canker was evaluated on sour cherry on the basis of infected leaves and fruits and on plum and sweet cherry on the basis of infected leaves. The highest efficacy was observed for products containing various forms of copper—copper oxide, copper oxychloride and copper hydroxide—as well as fertilizers with copper gluconate and the fungicide Luna Care 71.6 WG (fluopyram and fosetyl-Al). However, the biological preparations were significantly less effective. The canopy volume of fruit trees is an important input for the precise and varying application of pesticides in orchards. The fixed mesh division method is mostly used to calculate canopy volumes with variable target-oriented spraying. To reduce the influence of the working speed on the detection accuracy under a fixed mesh width division, the cuboid accumulation of divided areas (CADAs), which is a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) online detection method for a fruit tree canopy volume based on dynamic mesh division, is proposed in this paper. In the method, the area is divided according to the number of unilateral nozzles of the sprayer in the canopy height direction of the fruit tree, and the mesh width is dynamically adjusted according to the change in the working speed in the moving direction of the sprayer. To verify the accuracy and applicability of the method, the simulation canopy and peach tree canopy detection experiments were carried out. The test results show that the CADA method can be used to calculate the contour and volume of the canopy. However, detection errors easily occur at the edge of the canopy, resulting in a detection error of 8.33% for the simulated canopy volume. The CADA method has a good detection accuracy under different moving speeds and fruit tree canopy sizes. At a speed of 1 m/s, the detection accuracy of the canopy volume reaches 99.18%. Compared with the existing canopy volume calculation methods based on the alpha-shape algorithm and canopy meshing-profile characterization (CMPC), the detection accuracy of the CADA method is 2.73% and 7.22% better, respectively. This method can not only reduce the influence of the moving speed on the detection accuracy of the canopy volume, but also improve the detection accuracy. The introduction of the cultivation of millets (Panicum miliaceum and Setaria italica) along Iberia's Mediterranean zone appears to stem from different origins which themselves hinged on their own specific historical developments. The earliest traces in the northeast, presumably of trans-Pyrenean origin, were brought to light in Bronze Age contexts (13th century BC) in Western Catalonia, notably in the Cinca River Valley. The different species of millets from southern and eastern Iberia, by contrast, come from later 10th–8th century BC contexts under Phoenician influence. Their expansion can be linked to the cultivation of fruit trees (vineyards and others) throughout the 9th–7th centuries BC. The cultivation of millets into the intermediate geographical zone between these two areas is difficult to characterise as it is not possible to identify either a northern or southern in-fluence. In any case, different types of millet saw a wide expansion from the 7th century BC onwards, especially in settlements in the hinterland of the colony of Emporion. In dryland agroecosystems, intercropping fruit trees with legumes is often an important option for maintaining and improving soil N quality and fertility. The relationships of fine root length density (FRLD), soil water content (SWC), and soil NO3−-N content (SNC) in agroforestry systems is essential for optimal orchard management. Our objective was to understand the temporal and spatial dynamics of FRLD, SWC, and SNC in an apple–soybean intercropping system and competition between species for ecological niches. We established an orchard with soybean and apple, including monoculture apple (MA), monoculture soybean (MS), and apple–soybean intercrop (AS) treatments. We collected data on the distribution of FRLD, SWC, SNC, and productivity under the MA, AS, and MS from 2020 to 2021. This study showed that AS had more FRLD compared to MA, and intercropping apple (IA) FRLD increased at 20–60 cm soil depth at 50 and 100 cm from the tree and decreased at 0–40 cm soil depth at 150 and 200 cm from the tree. Intercropping increased the SWC of the system and decreased the SNC, and the effect of intercropping was concentrated in the soybean cover area. The competition between apple and soybean reached its maximum at soybean seed filling stage, with competition occurring mainly at 100 cm from the tree and at 0–20 cm soil depth. Intercropping affected soybean growth and also reduced soybean yield with a land equivalent ratio = 1.45. By understanding the dynamics of subsoil resources in the apple–soybean intercropping system and interspecific competition, we can provide a theoretical basis for exploring the potential of sustainable intensification of agroforestry systems. Olive agro-ecosystems in southern Italy have been heavily damaged due to Xylella fastidiosa subsp. pauca (Xfp). Replacing the Xfp-infected olive-growing areas with economically viable fruit tree species is thought to be a practical control measure. A land suitability analysis can provide an appropriate evaluation of a crop's suitability in these areas. We evaluate the suitability of almond (Prunus dulcis B.), fig (Ficus carica L.), hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.), kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis P.), pistachio (Pistacia vera L.), and pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) as fruit tree species immune/resistant to Xfp to be planted within the Xfp-infected olive-growing areas in the Apulia region to compensate for economic and environmental losses. Climate and soil data were used to carry out the land suitability analysis. We combined information for each parameter to obtain the overall suitability maps for the six proposed fruit tree crops using GIS (Geographic Information System). The analysis showed that the Xfp-infected olive-growing areas are suitable for the plantation of most of the proposed fruit tree crops, with different suitability levels as the climate and soil conditions vary among the study areas. In particular, large olive-growing areas are suitable for the cultivation of pomegranate (268,886 ha), fig (103,975 ha), and almond (70,537 ha), followed by kiwifruit (43,018 ha) and pistachio (40,583 ha). Hazelnut, with just 2744 ha of suitable land, was the species with fewer suitable areas in these semi-arid environments. This is the first study to provide practical containment measures against the diffusion of Xfp in southern Italy. Our results can help in the selection of the right immune/resistant tree species for replanting in Xfp-infected zones, therefore providing guidelines within the decision-making process to encourage the planting of some underrepresented fruit tree crops with viable economic values as well. Flowering in temperate fruit trees depends on the temperatures during the previous months; chill is required to overcome endodormancy, and then heat exposure is needed. These agroclimatic requirements are cultivar-specific and determine their adaptability to the growing area and their response to climate change. We aim to estimate the agroclimatic requirements of 16 traditional cultivars of European pears grown in Zaragoza (Spain). We used Partial Least Squares regression analysis to relate 20-year records of flowering dates to the temperatures of the 8 previous months. This approach allowed us to establish the chilling and forcing periods, through which we quantified temperatures with three models for chill accumulation (Chilling Hours, Utah model, and Dynamic model) and one model for heat accumulation (Growing Degree Hours). The results indicated very little difference in the chilling and forcing periods. Chill requirements ranged from 43.9 to 49.2 Chill Portions; from 1027 to 1163 Chilling Units; and from 719 to 774 Chilling Hours. Heat requirements ranged from 6514 to 7509 Growing Degree Hours. Flowering dates were mainly determined by the temperatures during the chilling period. Air-assisted sprayers are widely employed in orchards, but inappropriate spray parameters can lead to large droplet losses, pesticide waste, and environmental pollution. To investigate the factors affecting the droplet loss of an air-assisted sprayer behind canopies, a two-factor, five-level full experiment was conducted in an actual orchard, where the two factors were the power gradient and foliage area volume density (FAVD). In addition, the location of the sampling point was also considered in the data analysis, including horizontal distance, forward distance, and height. The results show that all factors significantly affected droplet coverage (p-value < 0.01). The droplet coverage showed an increase and then a decrease with an increasing power gradient, and the maximum coverage was measured at power gradient P3 (forward speed: 0.49 m/s, spray pressure: 0.30 MPa, and spray flow rate: 7.13 L/min) or P4 (forward speed: 0.58 m/s, spray pressure: 0.35 MPa, and spray flow rate: 8.44 L/min). The effect of FAVD on droplet coverage had obvious regularity, and this regularity did not change with the power gradient. At different positions behind canopies, the droplet coverage had great differences. The droplet coverage gradually decreases with increasing horizontal distance and height, while increasing with forward distance. Pears are among the most economically important fruits in the world that are grown in all temperate zones. Pyrus communis L., 'Pyrodwarf®(S)' rootstock is one of the gene sources used to improve fruit productivity, rootstock resistance, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Traditional propagation of P. communis L. is time-consuming and limited by a short growing season and harsh winter conditions. Therefore, in vitro propagation is a suitable alternative. Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) and woody plant medium (WPM) supplemented with different concentrations of 6-benzyladenine (BA) and kinetin (Kin), individually or in combination, were used for in vitro shoot proliferation. Nodal segments were used as explants. MS medium augmented with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) or indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was then used for rooting of microshoots. A combination of 2 mg·L−1 BA and 1 mg·L−1 Kin in MS medium resulted in a significant improvement in shoot proliferation. This combination produced the highest number of shoots (4.352 per explant) and leaves (10.02 per explant). The longest shoots (4.045 cm) were obtained in WPM enriched with 1 mg·L−1 BA. However, these shoots were not suitable for multiplication and rooting steps. The largest number of roots (5.50 per microshoot) was obtained on MS medium augmented with IAA at 1 mg·L−1. The produced plantlets were cultivated in pots filled with perlite and cocopeat (in a ratio of 1:3) and acclimatized gradually in a greenhouse, recording an even 90% survival rate. The complete netting of orchards is one strategy to protect fruit trees from pest and pathogen damage by reducing insect movement. When the cultivated trees were derived from genetic engineering (GE), reduced pollinator movement may also reduce outcrossing to cultivated or wild non-GE trees. We report on a field study over four years in a plot of apple tress supplied with insect side nets and covered with hail nets that were closed from shortly before flowering to harvest. A reduced number of arthropods in general, and large bees in particular, were recorded inside the netted plot compared with outside. However, wild bees colonized the plot before the net was closed and built up populations inside. An additional experiment demonstrated that small bees were able to cross the hail net. While the nets were effective in excluding large bees as active pollen vectors, the proportion of small bees acting as such remained unquantified. Furthermore, a companion study showed occasional cross-pollination events through the netting. For the field release of GE apple trees, acceptable levels of outcrossing thus need to be defined. Girdling is an important means of improving the yield and quality of jujube trees, but this measure can easily cause injury, or even death, to jujube trees. A technology for increasing yield and improving quality, based on local thermal damage of jujube bark, is proposed to address a series of issues in current jujube-tree-girdling technology. First, we measured the thermophysical parameters of jujube bark and established a heat-transfer model for jujube bark. Then, in order to investigate the impact of local thermal damage on jujube-tree yield and fruit quality, local heating experiments were conducted on jujube-tree bark, using the heat-transfer model. The experimental results indicated that heating the jujube bark at a certain temperature for an appropriate time can effectively improve the yield and quality of jujube fruit. Compared with traditional girdling techniques, this method has less impact on the health of jujube trees and does not form permanent wounds on them. The research results provide new ideas for exploring sustainable yield-increase methods for fruit trees.

Delineating chilling and forcing periods is one of the challenging topics in understanding how temperatures drive the timing of budburst and bloom in fruit tree species. Here, we investigated this question on olive trees, using flowering data collected over six years on 331 cultivars in the worldwide collection of Marrakech, Morocco. Using a Partial Least Squares approach on a long-term phenology (29 years) of 'Picholine Marocaine' cultivar, we showed that the relevance of delineating the chilling and forcing periods depends more on the variability of inter-annual temperatures than on the long-term datasets. In fact, chilling and forcing periods are similar between those delineated by using datasets of 29 years and those of only 6 years (2014–2019). We demonstrated that the variability of inter-annual temperatures is the main factor explaining this pattern. We then used the datasets of six years to assess the chill and heat requirements of 285 cultivars. We classified Mediterranean olive cultivars into four groups according to their chill requirements. Our results, using the Kriging interpolation method, indicated that flowering dates of most of these cultivars (92%) were governed by both chilling and forcing temperatures. Cosmopolitan agricultural herbivorous pests are provided with a wide range of potential hosts. Therefore, they have high carrying capacity, and can cause extremely severe damage in agroecosystems. Understanding the ecological mechanisms of their population dynamics, especially as they relate to large-scale meteorological variations and geographical landscape influences, can help us to reveal how they became such important pests. The oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta, is a typical example of a significant pest distributed on a large scale, which is capable of damaging fruit trees of economic value such as peach, apple, pear, etc. This pest not only occurs in China, but exists on all continents except Antarctica. In order to prevent major pests and diseases, a system of plant protection has been established gradually in peach orchards within the Modern Agro-industry Technology Research System in China (CARS) since 2009. In the system, we collected the monitoring data of G. molesta by using pheromone traps at 17 experimental stations, and then used the corresponding climate data (temperature and precipitation) to explore the link between climate factors using mixed models. The results show that both monthly mean temperature and precipitation had a significant positive correlation with the occurrence of G. molesta. Therefore, global warming with higher levels of precipitation may favor G. molesta, allowing it to outperform other potential pests at the population level in peach orchards, on a large scale. Automatic navigation (AN) is an essential component to ensure the safety of pesticide application in orchards, whereas precision variable-rate spraying (PVS) serves as an indispensable technology for reducing the application of pesticides and protecting the environment. At present, AN and PVS are not closely combined. In this case, a single three-dimension (3D) light detection and ranging (LIDAR) sensor is hereby adopted to sense the information of fruit trees around the robot and determine the region of interest (ROI). Moreover, two-dimensional (2D) processing is conducted over the point clouds within the ROI to obtain the center-of-mass coordinates of fruit trees, and determine the vertical distance of the robot to the center line of the fruit tree row (FTR) based on the FTR on both sides using the Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) algorithm. Then, the robot is controlled to drive along the center line of the FTR. At the same time, the speed and position of the robot are determined by the encoder and inertial measurement unit (IMU), and the IMU corrects the information collected from the zoned canopy of the fruit trees. The results present a lateral deviation (LD) of less than 22 cm and a course deviation (CD) of less than 4.02° during AN. Compared with the traditional spraying (TS), the PVS applies 32.46%, 44.34% and 58.14% less pesticide application, air drift and ground loss, respectively. With the spraying effect guaranteed, the single 3D LIDAR, the encoder and IMU realize the AN and PVS of the robot, reduce the volume of pesticide application, ground loss and air drift, and effectively control the pollution caused by pesticides to the environment. Pear is an important fruit tree in China, and the Hexi area is the main pear-planting area in Gansu Province. Tree shapes have different effects on photosynthesis that influence fruit quality and development. Thus, in the current study, five tree shapes of Zaosu pear, including the Y-shaped, trunk, single-arm, double-arm, and spindle tree shapes, were selected, and their effects on photosynthesis and fruit quality were investigated. The thickness and length of shoot branches were highest in the single-, double-arm, and spindle tree shapes. The level of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) varied by tree shape; from highest to lowest, the order was double-arm > single-arm > spindle > Y-shaped > trunk tree shapes. Leaf area and chlorophyll content were highest in the single- and double-arm tree shapes, with higher increases in the net photosynthetic rate to light intensity (Pn-PAR), the net photosynthetic rate to CO2 (Pn-CO2), the relative variable fluorescence (Vj), PSII maximum photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm), and the light energy absorbed per unit reaction centre (ABS/RC). For fruit quality, the fruit shape index, fruit colour parameters, and content of soluble solids increased significantly in the single- and double-arm tree shapes, while the content of total acids, malic acid, and citric acid in the single- and double-arm tree shapes was lower than in the other tree shapes. All these results demonstrated that the single- and double-arm tree shapes are well ventilated and light-transmitting, which can promote fruit growth and quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water deficits affect the capacity of leaves to transport water, a process that is related to the obstruction of air in the xylem (embolism). The tolerance to this process has been negatively associated with water-transport efficiency at the xylem level across species, suggesting a tradeoff between hydraulic efficiency and safety. But there is a lack of observation at higher integration levels, i.e., organs. This study aimed to evaluate this tradeoff across six fruit tree species with a wide range of water-stress tolerance: pomegranate, olive, fig tree, mandarin, avocado, and vine. Efficiency was represented by the maximum foliar hydraulic conductance (Kmax) and stomatal conductance, whereas hydraulic security by water potential in which the leaf loses 50% of its water-transport capacity (P50), and at the point of loss of leaf turgor (Ψtlp). Results suggest that the compensation is weak or null at the foliar level. We observed that species with higher hydraulic efficiency tend to be more tolerant to leaf dehydration (higher hydraulic safety), except mandarin, which had lower Kmax and relatively higher P50. Morphological traits associated with carbon investment dynamic (leaf mass per area and petiole density) were highly correlated to water-stress tolerance across fruit tree species. Nitrogen is one of the essential elements for fruit tree growth. Therefore, a 15N tracing experiment was conducted to investigate the characteristics of nitrogen uptake and distribution in young pear trees. The experiment included: groups A and B, fertilized with 15 g unlabeled and 5 g labeled N per tree in the spring of 2017; and group C, fertilized with 20 g unlabeled N per tree in the spring of 2017 and 25 g unlabeled and 5 g labeled N per tree in the spring of 2018. Results indicated that new organs grew vigorously before June, and about 50% of the fertilizer nitrogen was concentrated in leaves. From June to November, the growth rate of storage organs was faster than that of new organs, and fertilizer nitrogen was mainly stored in the shoots, trunk, and roots. During the defoliation period, about 84% of the leaf fertilizer nitrogen was mobilized to the shoots, trunk, and roots. There was significant correlation between current fertilizer nitrogen and the dry mass weight of each organ after the completion of the nitrogen cycling of a whole year; the correlation coefficient was 0.98. Fertilizer nitrogen use efficiency increased with the ages of the pear trees. Therefore, nitrogen fertilizer rate should be formulated according to the tree growth characteristics and increased with the ages of the young pear trees; topdressing fertilizer should be applied in summer to ensure trunk and root development. Soil sickness syndrome in Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm.f.) Nakai) affects the growth of the tree and decreases fruit yield. This study investigated the growth-inhibitory activity in Japanese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia (Burm.f.) Nakai) using the rhizosphere soil assay method to elucidate the characteristics of growth-inhibitory substances in Japanese pears. As a result, the root bark had the highest growth inhibitory activity during the growing season of the Japanese pear. For comparative analysis, the growth-inhibitory activities of Japanese apricots (Prunus mume Sieb. Et Zucc.) and figs (Ficus carica L.) were also investigated. Similar to the Japanese pear, the root bark of Japanese apricots and figs had a higher inhibition rate than the root pith. Like Japanese apricots and figs, it was inferred that the growth inhibitory substances accumulate in the bark of the Japanese pear. Furthermore, soil sickness syndrome in Japanese pear saplings did not occur when a fragment of Japanese pear shoots or thick roots was mixed with non-pear soil (soil with no history of Japanese pear cultivation). Based on these findings, it is considered that the condition of soil sickness in Japanese pear is caused by the accumulation of phenolic compounds such as arbutin, which is accumulated in the bark of the tree, secreted from the roots, and subsequently builds up in the soil. Additionally, the degree of occurrence of soil sickness syndrome depending on the rootstock was clarified. It was observed that the rate of growth inhibition was significantly higher in Pyrus betulifolia (Birchleaf pear) than in Pyrus pyrifolia (Japanese pear). Even when Japanese pear trees were planted in soils with no history of Japanese pear cultivation, the initial growth of P. betulifolia was 1.4 times that of P. pyrifolia. It is suggested that P. betulifolia is weak against soil sickness, but is excellent at initial growth itself. Plant grafting is a maneuver humans learned from nature and has been practiced since ancient times. The technique has long been applied for efficient propagation as well as for the modification of the traits of interest, such as stress tolerance, tree size, and fruit quality. Since grafting can enhance the environmental tolerance and disease resistance of a plant, its techniques are now used not only in tree species but also among vegetables. Despite such wide advantages of grafting, however, the potential cause behind a compatible graft establishment (scion-rootstock connection) is yet to be fully understood. As compared to succulent herbaceous plants, woody plants often take a longer time for the graft-take and the plants may exhibit incompatible/unsuccessful graft-establishment symptoms within a period ranging from months to years. In this review, we discuss factors involved in a successful/compatible graft establishment along with bottlenecks of our understanding and future perspectives in a simplified manner- particularly focusing on incompatible graft formation on fruit trees based on earlier studies in the field. This work studied the sensitivity of the postharvest period of early maturing nectarine trees (Prunus persica L. Batsch, cv. Flariba) to water stresses. Along with a well-irrigated treatment (T-0), three water deficit treatments (by withholding irrigation) were applied: T-1: early postharvest (June–July), T-2: late postharvest (August–September), and T-3: the whole postharvest period (June–September). Soil water content (θv) and midday stem water potential (Ψstem) were measured throughout the study. During winter dormancy, L-arginine, starch, and phosphorus content in the roots were analyzed. Yield, fruit quality, and metabolites were determined at harvest. Ψstem reached −1.7 and −2.3 MPa at the end of the early and late postharvest periods, respectively. Total yield and number of fruits per tree were significantly reduced in all deficit treatments with respect to T-0, while no significant differences were observed in physicochemical fruit quality. The T-2 treatment showed the highest percentage of cracked fruits. Significantly, lower values of L-arginine and phosphorus were observed in the roots of T-2 trees, with respect to T-0, while they were similar in T-1 trees. Although the early postharvest stage is key for the application of RDI strategies, our results indicated that the late postharvest period was also a sensitive period to severe drought, as the accumulation of winter root reserves (L-arginine and phosphorus) was reduced, which limited yield. In 1990, new Phytophthora strains, later recognized as a new species, Phytophthora sansomeana, were found to cause Phytophthora root rot (PRR) in soybean in addition to P. sojae. The emergence and spread of a second pathogen causing PRR poses a significant threat to soybean production. While genetic resistance to P. sojae has been developed and widely deployed as a management tool, these varieties appear largely ineffective at controlling P. sansomeana, which has a broad host-range and can infect and survive on non-leguminous hosts including fir trees, Rosaceous fruit trees, maize, and several herbaceous weeds. This contributes potential for broad distributions worldwide across both agricultural and natural ecosystems. Despite having been studied since the 1980s under a variety of informal designations, little is known about the epidemiology, host-interactions, and management of this emergent pathogen. Due to the lack of management options, increased frequency of first reports in new geographic areas, and the overall limited body of knowledge surrounding this novel pathogen, P. sansomeana warrants more research attention from both biological and disease management perspectives. The aim of this review is to summarize the hosts, distribution, pathogenicity, and current management strategies of P. sansomeana and to provide a concise record of where it has been studied under other informal designations. Bacterial spot, which is the main disease occurring in passion fruit trees, is caused by the bacterium Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. passiflorae, leading to large annual losses in passion fruit crops. This study aims to find extracts and/or bioactive compounds of endophytic fungi of noni (Morinda citrifolia) to treat bacterial spot in passion fruit trees. Nine fungi isolated from a specimen of M. citrifolia from the Brazilian Amazon are studied. The fungus Guignardia mangiferae NF17 shows the best inhibition results and is selected for the isolation of its secondary metabolites by chromatography techniques. The isolated compounds Sydowinol (S1) and Sydowinin A (S2) are identified by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Compounds S1 and S2, as well as the acetonitrile extract from the biomass of G. mangiferae NF17, are tested against four strains of X. axonopodis pv. passiflorae obtained from plants infected by bacterial spot, and which inhibited bacterial growth up to the lowest concentration tested (3.125 µg/mL). This study reports, for the first time, the antibacterial activity against X. axonopodis pv. passiflorae by the compounds Sydowinol and Sydowinin A. The technology of producing fruits containing an increased amount of elements essential for the health of the human body, including silicon, has become very important in recent years. Due to the popularity of apple tree cultivation in Europe, appropriate research has been undertaken. The aim of the experiment was to determine the advisability of foliar silicon nutrition in apple tree cultivation. Apple cultivars 'Gala Schniga', 'Ligol' and 'Topaz' were studied and treated with three different doses of silicon (100, 200, 300 mg SiO2·L−1). The treatments were performed five times during tree growth in the third year of cultivation from early June to late July. Foliar application of silicon did not improve the evaluated tree growth parameters. It significantly influenced, in the highest analysed concentration, a better fruit yield (12%), a higher yield coefficient, depending on the concentration, from 16 to 18%, a better fruit quality (weight and size) and a more extensive red blush. The considered cultivars differed in the growth and yield of trees in the third year of cultivation. 'Topaz' grew strongest and 'Ligol' yielded the best. The highest yield coefficient was found for the Topaz' cultivar. The fruit of 'Topaz' had the biggest blush and 'Gala Schniga' the biggest sugar content. Macro- and micro-nutrient nutritional status of trees were no better, except for iron and copper in leaves, and at some concentrations of applied silicon also zinc and copper in fruit. Selenicereus megalanthus is a native fruit tree with broad phenotypic variations that has not been characterized. The objective of this research was to morphoagronomically evaluate yellow pitahaya genotypes in open fields and under cover in the municipality of Miraflores, Boyacá. A diagnostic census of the productive system was carried out. The morphoagronomic characterization used a completely random design with qualitative and quantitative descriptors for fruits and cladodes taken in situ and analyzed with frequency, descriptive, multivariate, conglomerate, and sperm correlation analyses. The pitahaya production system was based on empirical practices carried out by farmers. The weight of the largest fruit in open fields was 219.04 g on average; the average was 186.48 g with the covered system. The open-field systems had the largest genotypes in all the dimensions (length and width). The covered systems had the highest number of fruits per cladode (3.70) and the longest cladodes in the entire study (121.24 cm). Both production systems showed similar values for titratable acidity (0.20), and the soluble solids values were slightly higher in the open-field system than in the covered system (15.20 and 14.66 °Brix, respectively), desirable characteristics for the market. Genotypes 7 (under cover) and 3 (open field) presented outstanding morphological and agronomic characteristics. Under specific conditions, the fruit on citrus trees will split open. The damaged fruit is unmarketable and provides a habitat for fungal and insect pests that can reproduce and then damage currently marketable fruit. Losses of 30 to over 50 percent of the crop are possible with some cultivars. This is a physiological disorder that starts with nutrient imbalances at flowering that result in mechanically weak areas in the rind. These rupture if interior parts of the fruit expand faster than the peel can stretch. The disconnect between problem initiation and symptom expression provides many challenges to experimental designs and interpretation. Consequently, no solution has been found despite over a century of research into the problem. This is also a problem for growers because they can only see the problem after it is too late to correct. Our goal is to define the problem and highlight successes and failures in finding a solution. Pathogen infection has greatly reduced crop production. As the symptoms of diseases usually appear when the plants are infected severely, rapid identification approaches are required to monitor plant diseases at early the infection stage and optimize control strategies. Hyperspectral imaging, as a fast and nondestructive sensing technology, has achieved remarkable results in plant disease identification. Various models have been developed for disease identification in different plants such as arable crops, vegetables, fruit trees, etc. In these models, important algorithms, such as the vegetation index and machine learning classification and methods have played significant roles in the detection and early warning of disease. In this paper, the principle of hyperspectral imaging technology and common spectral characteristics of plant disease symptoms are discussed. We reviewed the impact mechanism of pathogen infection on the photo response and spectrum features of the plants, the data processing tools and algorithms of the hyperspectral information of pathogen-infected plants, and the application prospect of hyperspectral imaging technology for the identification of plant diseases. Water is a limited resource in arid and semi-arid regions, as is the case in the Mediterranean Basin, where demographic and climatic conditions make it ideal for growing fruits and vegetables, but a greater volume of water is required. Deficit irrigation strategies have proven to be successful in optimizing available water without pernicious impact on yield and harvest quality, but it is essential to control the water stress of the crop. The direct measurement of crop water status is currently performed using midday stem water potential, which is costly in terms of time and labor; therefore, indirect methods are needed for automatic monitoring of crop water stress. In this study, we present a novel approach to indirectly estimate the water stress of 15-year-old mature sweet cherry trees from a time series of soil water status and meteorological variables by using Machine Learning methods (Random Forest and Support Vector Machine). Time information was accounted for by integrating soil and meteorological measurements within arbitrary periods of 3, 6 and 10 days. Supervised binary classification and regression approaches were applied. The binary classification approach allowed for the definition of a model that alerts the farmer when a dangerous crop water stress episode is about to happen a day in advance. Performance metrics F2 and recall of up to 0.735 and 0.769, respectively, were obtained. With the regression approach a R2 of up to 0.817 was achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DNA methylation of three cultivars, each of the fruit tree species pear, plum and apple, was analyzed by the methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphism (MSAP) marker. All three fruit tree cultivars were found to contain apparently lower levels of methylation at the 5′-CCGG sites than all other plant species, such as rice and wheat, studied by the same method. Sequencing of the representative loci isolated from the MSAP profiles indicated that both protein-coding genes and transposable elements (TEs) were involved in low methylation. Gel blotting using isolated MSAP fragments and fragment mixtures representing two major types of TEs (copia- and gypsy-like) as hybridization probes confirmed the unexpected low DNA methylation levels at the 5′-CCGG sites in these three fruit tree genomes. Our results suggest that the three asexually propagated perennial fruit trees may indeed contain unusual lower levels of DNA methylation, especially in TEs at the 5′-CCGG sites. Additionally, our results may also suggest that the often used MSAP marker, which targets only one kind of specific methylation-sensitive sites recognized by a pair of isoschizomers (e.g., 5′-CCGG by HpaII/MspI), is not always representative of other cytosine sites (e.g., CHH) or CG sites other than those of 5′-CCGGs in some plant species. This study aimed to investigate the presence of beneficial microorganisms in the micropropagation of Pyrus communis rootstocks through the isolation, identification, and selection of auxin-producing bacteria. The selected microorganisms were also inoculated in vitro to evaluate their effect on the plant rooting process and their behavior during the acclimatization phase. The results showed the presence of endophytic microorganisms in plant tissue cultures of the 'OH×F87′ and 'PDW' selections. A low diversity was observed in the population of microorganisms isolated from the in vitro culture of the 'OH×F87'and 'PDW' selections, with a predominance of the genera Acinetobacter, Bacillus, and Buttiauxella. The selection of promoting microorganisms was performed based on the auxin production test, in which 30.36% of the microorganisms tested positive. In the in vitro inoculation, it was possible to observe the promotion of growth and emission of roots in the pear rootstocks, from the inoculation with bacteria identified as capable of producing auxin. This process can be used to replace the inclusion of synthetic auxin in the productive chain of woody fruit trees propagated by vegetative means, such as pears. None of the bacterial isolates was notably more promising, but the general similarity of treatments containing the A. septicus and A. ursingii strains, with the synthetic auxin treatment, suggests the possibility of its use on a large scale allowing the adoption of the cheaper method. of rooting. This work opens the door for further research using new, more promising microbial isolates, and also for lower-cost microorganism cultivation techniques, such as low-cost media obtained from agro-industrial residues. The effective quantification of deposition rate is of vital importance in optimizing the application performance and the utilization of pesticides; meanwhile, the canopies of fruit tree orchards are large, with dense branches and leaves shading each other, making it difficult to quantify spraying efficiency. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a facile methodology for assessing the performance of different spraying techniques in terms of distribution and utilization rate in orchards. To evaluate spraying efficacy in orchards, a canopy segmentation method was developed in to be able to determine the spray deposition rate. The distribution and deposition rate of spray liquid applied using three kinds of orchard sprayer were measured in a pear orchard and a peach orchard. The test results showed that the trailer sprayer had the highest deposition rates, with values of 31.54% and 56.92% on peach and pear trees, respectively. The deposition rates of the mounted sprayer in the peach and pear canopies were 21.75% and 40.61%, and the rates of the hand-held sprayer were 25.19% and 29.97%, respectively. The spray gun had the best droplet distribution uniformity, with CVs of the spray in the peach and pear canopies of 20.54% and 25.06%, respectively. The CVs in the peach and pear canopies were 35.98% and 26.54% for the trailer sprayer, and the CVs of the mounted sprayer were 92.52% and 94.90%, respectively. The canopy segmentation method could effectively be used to calculate the deposition rate and drioplet distribution in orchard application, while a great deal of time was consumed by counting the number of leaves in the different areas of the fruit tree canopies. Therefore, research on the density of branches and leaves in fruit tree canopies should be carried out in order to improve the efficiency of fruit tree canopy information extraction. Pollination is essential for the production of most fruit and nut crops, yet it is often a limiting factor for both yield and product quality. Mechanical pollination (MP) systems offer the potential to increase productivity of a broad range of horticultural fruit and nut crops, and to manage the risk of reliance on current insect pollination services. To date, commercial MP systems have been developed for only a few crops (e.g., kiwifruit and date palm), suggesting that innovation in the use of MP systems has been stymied. Here, we review published and 'grey' literature to investigate the feasibility of MP systems of economically important tree fruit and nut crops. This review found that, whilst MP systems are a commercial reality for a wider range of fruit crops (e.g., sweet cherry) than nut crops (e.g., almond), promising results have been achieved at the experimental scale. Further we identified that the key barriers for progressing MP systems more widely include knowledge gaps in pollination biology, particularly of emerging fruit and nut species that are grown outside their native distributions, and access to proprietorial knowledge gained by commercial operators. What continues to remain unclear is detailed knowledge of the commercial development of MP systems and therefore, the opportunities to apply this knowledge to other tree crops where effective pollination limits yield and quality. In many fruit trees, the thinning of buds, flowers, or fruits is used to increase the leaf area-to-fruit ratio (LA:F) and reduce competition for carbohydrates. Meanwhile, calcium (Ca) sprays during fruit development are also used to increase fruit quality and postharvest storage. Such practices have been recommended to increase fruit firmness and reduce fruit cracking in sweet cherries. To understand the effects of foliar Ca sprays and crop load reductions in the combination 'Lapins'/'Colt', trained as the Kym Green Bush, a factorial experiment to determine the interactions between both managements was established in the Central Valley of Chile during the 2018/2019 growing season. Two levels of crop load (CL) were established—thinned (50% crop load) and unthinned (100% crop load) during Stage I of fruit development (31 days after full bloom, DAFB). Three timings of foliar applications of CaCl2 (TFA; 0.8%) were evaluated: early 26 DAFB, later 39 DAFB, or late 62 DAFB. Natural fruit contents and concentrations of Ca were determined on unsprayed control trees. Fruit from the thinned trees were significantly larger and heavier and had a higher titratable acidity than unthinned trees did. Significant interactions between TFA and CL were observed for SSC, without a clear trend. Thinned trees were less affected by pedicel detachment, browning, and fruit decay after 45 d of storage (0 °C). In unthinned trees, a foliar CaCl2 spray at Stage I allowed a higher fruit firmness than CaCl2 sprays at Stage II and III of fruit development. The CaCl2 applications at 39 or 62 DAFB reduced the incidence of cracking in thinned trees. Natural Ca concentrations decreased during fruit development, indicating a cessation of Ca import and a dilution by subsequent growth. Our results suggest that the early reduction of crop load has positive effects on fruit quality and condition during storage, and early Ca sprays (Stage I) improve fruit textural properties, even under high crop loads. Pears are among the most economically important fruits in the world that are grown in all temperate zones. Pyrus communis L., ‘Pyrodwarf®(S)’ rootstock is one of the gene sources used to improve fruit productivity, rootstock resistance, and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. Traditional propagation of P. communis L. is time-consuming and limited by a short growing season and harsh winter conditions. Therefore, in vitro propagation is a suitable alternative. Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) and woody plant medium (WPM) supplemented with different concentrations of 6-benzyladenine (BA) and kinetin (Kin), individually or in combination, were used for in vitro shoot proliferation. Nodal segments were used as explants. MS medium augmented with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) or indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was then used for rooting of microshoots. A combination of 2 mg·L−1 BA and 1 mg·L−1 Kin in MS medium resulted in a significant improvement in shoot proliferation. This combination produced the highest number of shoots (4.352 per explant) and leaves (10.02 per explant). The longest shoots (4.045 cm) were obtained in WPM enriched with 1 mg·L−1 BA. However, these shoots were not suitable for multiplication and rooting steps. The largest number of roots (5.50 per microshoot) was obtained on MS medium augmented with IAA at 1 mg·L−1. The produced plantlets were cultivated in pots filled with perlite and cocopeat (in a ratio of 1:3) and acclimatized gradually in a greenhouse, recording an even 90% survival rate.
