Employing elevated CO2 (eCO2), similar to increasing atmospheric CO2 in a greenhouse, is a common practice used to increase vegetable crop yields. However, the responses of nutrient availability, nutrient uptake and use efficiency in leafy vegetables to eCO2 remain largely unknown. The plant biomass production, nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) contents, nutrient uptake, and soil enzymatic activities of three Brassica chinensis varieties of ‘Longpangqing’, ‘Heimeiren’ and ‘Qingjiangbai’ were thus assessed under ambient CO2 (C0, 420/470 ppm, day/night) and eCO2 (C1, C0 + 33.3%C0; C2, C0 + 66.7%C0; and C3, C0 + 100%C0) for 4 months. Biomass production was significantly enhanced in these three tested B. chinensis varieties along with eCO2 gradients, with the highest biomass production under C3. Moreover, the eCO2 significantly increased plant N and K uptake, P and K use efficiency, soil saccharase, urease, and phosphatase activities, but decreased plant P content, soil available N and K, and catalase activity. Under eCO2, ‘Qingjiangbai’ exhibited higher biomass production and P and K uptake, without a decrease in soil available N and P. Consequently, more external fertilizer supplementation (especially N, followed by K) is required to maintain or promote Brassica chinensis yield under eCO2, while these management strategies must be carefully considered for different crop varieties.

The traditional manure management strategy, based on crop N needs, results in accumulation of phosphorus (P) in soil due to the imbalance of N/P ratio between crop requirement and manure supply. This study was conducted from 2004 to 2013 to evaluate the effects of P-based liquid and solid swine manure (LMP and SMP, for P-based liquid and solid swine manure, respectively) application, in comparison with N-based application (LMN and SMN, for N-based liquid and solid swine manure, respectively), on crop yield and soil residual P under corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean (Glycine max L.) rotation in a Brookston clay loam soil of the Lake Erie basin, ON, Canada. Chemical fertilizer P (CFP) and non-P treatments were included as controls (CK). For liquid manure treatments, corn yield for LMN showed a lower annual corn yield (7.82 Mg ha−1) than LMP (9.36 Mg ha−1), and their differences were even statistically significant at p < 0.05 in some cropping years. The annual corn yield of LMP was also higher than those of SMP (7.45 Mg ha−1) and SMN (7.41 Mg ha−1), even the CFP (8.61 Mg ha−1), although the corresponding yield differences were not significant (p < 0.05) in some cropping years. For soybean, the plots with P application produced an average of 0.98 Mg ha−1 greater annual yields than CK. No significant differences were found between CFP and manure treatments. The annual corn yield of SMN was close to that of the CK (7.19 Mg ha−1). The grain P removal (GPR) of SMN (18.6 kg ha−1) for soybean was significantly higher than that of the other treatments. The above-ground-P uptake (AGPU) in SMN, for both corn and soybean, was significantly higher than that of the other five treatments. The soil test P (STP) presented clear stratification, concentrating in the top 30 cm soil depth after 10 years of application. The contents of STP with LMN and SMN increased from 7.1 mg P kg−1 to 12.4 and 45.5 mg P kg−1, respectively. The sum of STP mass (0–30 cm) with LMP (31.6 kg ha−1) was largely identical to that with CFP (30.1 kg ha−1); however, with SMN (173.7 kg ha−1), it was significantly higher than the rest of the treatments. Manure P source availability coefficients were averaged at 1.06 and 1.07 for LMP and SMP, respectively. The addition of phosphorus-based liquid or solid swine manure can overcome the drawback of traditional N-based applications by potentially reducing the adverse impact on water quality while sustaining crop agronomic production.

New shoots (including newly formed leaves and twigs) and fruits of citrus tree are key organs for present yield formation and flower differentiation in the next season, but the relationship between yield fluctuation and accumulations of major nutrients in new shoots and fruits of citrus tree is still unclear. Thus, to quantify the biomass and mineral nutrient accumulation in new shoots and fruits of citrus trees under varied yield levels has essential significance for rational fertilization and pruning management for citrus orchards. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to investigate the accumulation of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg), and the distribution of biomass in new shoots and fruits of citrus trees under low, medium and high-yield levels in each of eight orchards located in Chongqing, China. The results showed that substantial variation of fruit yield was observed in all eight orchards with an average yield of 15.0 (low), 30.9 (medium) and 60.1 (high) kg/plant. The averaged biomass of new shoots ranged from 1.59 to 2.51 kg/plant, which was significantly and positively correlated with fruit yield. Nutrient accumulation in leaves was generally highest among new organs, while more than half of N (52.70–71.4%), P (66.5–80.4%) and K (68.9–85.9%) accumulated in fruit. Fruit yields closely correlated with total amounts of major nutrients in new shoots. Furthermore, the nutrient requirements per unit of newly developed shoots and fruits were gradually decreased with increased yield, but the removed nutrients per ton of fresh fruit were almost stable, indicating that more nutrients were distributed into fruit tissues. Taken together, these findings are valuable for optimizing nutrient and pruning management in citrus orchards in China and other similar countries.

Few studies have examined if perennial leguminous cover crops are able to transfer nitrogen (N) via common mycorrhizal networks (CMNs) to neighboring fruit trees; the gradient of such N transfer could affect the N nutrition of both plants. Using separated three-column chambers to grow plants in a greenhouse, 99 atom% 15N as (15NH4)2SO4 was applied to leaves of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) and 15N was then traced in neighboring citrus (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) seedlings interconnected by an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF, Rhizophagus intraradices). A range of 66.85–68.74% mycorrhizal colonization in white clover (mycorrhizal and/or Rhizobium trifolii inoculated) and 19.29–23.41% in citrus (non-mycorrhizal inoculated) was observed after 12 months of AMF inoculation in the white clover, indicating a successful CMN linkage was established between these two plant species. This CMN establishment resulted in significant increases in biomass, N accumulation, and 15N content of citrus when accompanied with nodulated and mycorrhizal fungus colonized white clover. N transfer from white clover to citrus was significantly greater under nodulation plus mycorrhization (46.23 mg N per pot, 1.71% of N transferred) than under non-inoculated control (4.36 mg N per pot, 0.21% of N transferred), and higher than sole mycorrhization (36.34 mg N per pot, 1.42% of N transferred). The percentage of N in citrus derived from white clover under nodulated/mycorrhization was 1.83–1.93%, and was highest in leaves (3.31%), moderate in stems (2.47%), and lowest in roots (0.41%) of citrus. In summary, results from this experiment demonstrated that nearly 2.0% of N transferred from white clover to citrus via CMN. Further studies are needed to quantify N transfer between white clover and citrus by other routes, including soil or root exudation pathways.

Estimating balanced nutrient requirements for a watermelon plantation is essential to increase its fruit yield and nutrient use efficiency. This is vital for China, which produces 60% of world’s watermelons with excessive fertilizer application. Therefore, datasets between 2000 and 2019 from field experiments in major watermelon producing regions across China were collected to assess relationships between fruit yield and nutrient uptake, and to estimate nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) requirements for a target yield using a modified Quantitative Evaluation of the Fertility of Tropical Soils (QUEFTS) model. The results showed that the QUEFTS model predicted a linear increase in fruit yield to 60–70% of the total potential yield when balanced amounts of N, P, and K nutrients were absorbed. To produce 1000 kg of watermelon, 2.11 kg N, 0.27 kg P, and 2.69 kg K were required in shoot, and the corresponding internal efficiencies (IE) were 475, 3682, and 372 kg fruit per kg of N, P, and K, respectively. The modified QUEFTS model also simulated a balanced N, P, and K removal by fruit (accounting for 50.9%, 58.2%, and 66.4% of these nutrient accumulations in shoots, respectively). Field validation experiments further verified that the modified QUEFTS model could be used for estimating balanced nutrient requirements. Results from this study can provide practical guidance on fertilizer recommendations for improving fruit yield while preventing excessive or deficient nutrient supplies in China’s watermelon plantations.
