David L. Waltz (1943-2012), was director, Center for Computational Learning Systems (CCLS), Columbia University, and a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence. Waltz served as Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) president from 1997 to 1999, was a Fellow of AAAI and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), a senior member of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and former chair of the ACM Special Interest Group on Artificial Intelligence (SIGART). Prior to joining CCLS, he was president of the NEC Research Institute in Princeton, and from 1984-1993 was director of Advanced Information Systems at Thinking Machines Corporation and a professor of computer science at Brandeis University. The Workshop on Connectionist-Symbolic Integration: From Unified to Hybrid Approaches was held on 19 to 20 August 1995 in Montreal, Canada, in conjunction with the Fourteenth International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence. The focus of the workshop was on learning and architectures that feature hybrid representations and support hybrid learning. The general consensus was that hybrid connectionist-symbolic models constitute a promising avenue to the development of more robust, more powerful, and more versatile architectures for both cognitive modeling and intelligent systems.

The Workshop on Integrating Neural and Symbolic Processes (the Cognitive Dimension), sponsored by the American Association for Artificial Intelligence, was held on 16 July 1992 at the San Jose Convention Center, San Jose, California. The workshop addressed the cognitive aspects of integrating neural and symbolic processes through the comparison, the categorization, and the examination of existing and new approaches. The workshop attracted a large audience from both academia and industry. The presentation of 16 papers, 3 invited talks, and a summary panel, as well as open discussions, helped to shed much new light on technical issues and future directions in this area.
