The construction materials industry has been acclaimed as an enormous economy and is expected to continue to rise in future. Over the past few years, India's urban built environment has been expanding rapidly to accommodate the increasing urban population and to meet the rising aspirations of upscaling standards of living. In addition to new projects, redevelopment works are also prominent amongst the construction activities being undertaken all across our urban areas. The large-scale construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) is generated inadvertently from on-going construction activities with no major sustainable interventions or practices in place ever since. The state of art overview of C&D waste management practices and related legislation in India and select countries abroad provides sufficient opportunity for introducing and promoting circular economy (CE) in C&D waste management. This can be done through direct reuse or by recycling/ repair /refurbishment in different stages of construction projects. Reports on key infrastructure projects suggest project delays and cost over-run due to shortage of fresh stocks of primary construction materials. Promoting design of products or components remanufactured using dismantled or recycled C&D waste would no longer let the C&D waste remain as a threat to sustainable environment. Instead, the industry would get geared up to produce high-quality secondary raw materials that can be fed back into production processes. This will not just reduce the reliance on primary resources for construction materials like stone, sand, etc. but also promote the new business models which will focus on waste prevention and 'turning waste into resources' by effectively and efficiently utilizing C&D waste in a sustainable manner. This will embed circular economy in the system and also make the process more sustainable. Present models for sustainability assessment are primarily based on statistical records of C&D waste quantities and they rarely include all three aspects of sustainability (economic, environmental and social). This paper proposes a conceptual model of efficient C&D waste management strategies considering all the three aspects of sustainability. A conceptual model has been developed using the barriers and motivating factors obtained from literature review for implementation of effective C&D waste management for circular economy. Using existing knowledge of the components of C&D waste management system and the positive or negative relationships between them the proposed conceptual model focuses on strategies, institutional arrangement and economic circularity for managing the C&D waste. The paper highlights the need for an institutional framework and suitable strategies for efficient handling of C&D Waste. The paper concludes with possible future directions and potential policy recommendations for optimizing C&D waste management in India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of tourism worldwide has raised important concerns in studies based on the actions of tourism activities on community and environment. Nowadays, the research directions also focus on the continuous development of the agro-tourism sector. The connection between agro-tourism and sustainable development (SD) requires new frameworks concerning prototypes/patterns. Hence, the current research focuses on the circular economy (CE) agro-tourism sustainable development. The results and discussion presented in the current paper enhance the sustainable use of the resources within this field. Introducing CE concepts in this sector promotes the adoption of the latest sustainability targets in terms of production, consumption, and ethical choices. In addition, the agro-tourism structures offer the opportunity of involving different stakeholders (e.g., tourists and staff) in the implementation of initiatives to improve the levels of sustainability in this sector. The research presents a model of agro-tourism activities based on two case studies located in rural regions (Italy and Romania) aiming to improve the agro-tourism systems best practices towards SD goals under a CE perspective and taking into account the waste, energy, and air pollution sectors. Moreover, this paper underlines the role of the participants involved in agro-tourism by stimulating important awareness and attention within the agro-tourism sector's impact on environmental impact and consequently the local community well-being. In the present changing context, sustainable manufacturing has become an issue of paramount importance where the term sustainability is well integrated with manufacturing process of a firm. It basically deals with designing the manufacturing process in such a way that benefits the industry, community and ecology on a large extent. It eventually aims at increasing the organisations' competitiveness, efficiency and profitability in long run. Research states that the industries and manufacturers need to establish a culture of practicing sustainability in industrial process to remain flourishing in present and future context. There is an increasing shift of consumer and government towards the use of environment friendly products which could benefit the environment, society and economy in a long term. It majorly focuses on complying with environmental regulations, natural resource conservation, and the waste management. These all reasons highlight the significance of sustainable manufacturing for current day's organisations and that's why induce the researchers to conduct research in sustainable manufacturing on key priority. Bibliometric analysis was used to review research on sustainable manufacturing from the year 2000 to 2020. The findings of bibliometric analysis show that research interest in the concerned area is just increased in the period of 2012 to2020 continuously. This study could be significant to those who are planning to enter the field of sustainable manufacturing research, and guide them regarding selection of right journals, and authors to seek the relevant information, gives idea for most cited and studied papers and also the keywords which were often used in the sustainable manufacturing researches. The National recycling programme has been launched in the year 1993 and then re-launched in the year 2000; however, the recycling rate is at a very low level in Malaysia. The solid waste generation has been increasing due to population growth, rapid growth of economy, urbanization and changes in lifestyle. Hence solid waste management is challenging in Malaysia. Currently, most of the solid wastes are disposed in landfills as it is one of the cheaper and easier methods in Malaysia. However, the landfills have reached a maximum and critical level due to high volume of solid waste generation. Meanwhile, most of the landfills are open dumping sites, which has caused environmental pollution. New landfill sites are difficult to identify as they have been rejected by the local community, such as the Bukit Payong landfill. Nevertheless, recycling is the most convenient method to reduce the solid waste disposal in landfills. Many recycling programmes have been conducted to achieve the recycling target, including the mandatory waste segregation at source programme. Many researchers have studied the failure in sustainability of recycling programmes aimed to increase the recycling rate in Malaysia. Therefore, this research paper is based on the conceptual framework findings from the literature review of recycling programmes and aims to develop a recycling programme based on integration approaches of good governance practices, functions of management, and the PDCA concept. The integration approaches of good governance practices, functions of management and PDCA concept will be used in recycling programme formulation. All stakeholders shall be involved in the recycling programmes formulation at each stage of planning, implementation, monitoring, and improvement. The continuous improvement cycle shall be practiced in the recycling programmes for sustainability. The use of waste materials as replacement of natural resources is one of the best approaches to improve sustainability. Paper mill sludge (Hyposludge) is a major economic and environmental problem for the paper and board industry. Most of the wastes sent to dumping sites and landfills. These waste materials could be incorporated in concrete manufacturing as a replacement for cement due to its similar pozzolanic property. From the literature studied it was clear that use of hyposludge in concrete increases compressive strength but on the other hand decreases flexural strength. In order to overcome the decreased flexural strength, fibers could be used. This project involves partial replacement of cement with Hyposludge and also adding steel fibres to improve the flexural strength in M25 grade of concrete mix. The hyposludge replacement percentage was chosen to be 10% and the fibres were added on two different percentages i.e., 0.5% and 1%. The prisms were made and tested for flexural strength. The test showed that 0.5% usage of steel fibres given 7.4% improved flexural strength compared to conventional concrete mix and the 1% fibre proportion showed greater flexural strength of 18.4% higher strength compared to the conventional concrete mix.
