An aspect of recent developments in crystal growth technologies is the control of electric conductive fluids by magnetic fields. Recently it was shown by [4] and [3] that boundary control of crystal melts was not very successful. In this paper we consider a coupled model consisting of the mass, momentum and energy balance for the melt and a global induction equation. This extensive modeling is a very good base for the crystal melt control by certain magnetic fields. We develop and discuss the mathematical model and the numerical solution method and demonstrate some simulation results for the twodimensional and three-dimensional case. Finally on this basis an outlook for a possible benefit of the considered mathematical model and its numerical solution for a flow/melt control is given. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effects of outflow boundary conditions are investigated on subsonic external flows in the transitional regime. Calculations have been performed for two-dimensional flows over a finite flat plate using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method, concentrating on Knudsen numbers of 0.02 and higher. At the outflow boundaries, the incoming molecules are determined by using a model which adjusts the outflow boundary conditions according to the local rarefaction assuming equilibrium. The results show sensitivity to the model at low Mach numbers but as the speed increases the sensitivity decreases. The effects of domain size, sample size and doing the extrapolations from the adjacent boundary cells rather than following the streamline trajectories are shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Scattering and absorption of light by flat nanosize silver strips are investigated using new efficient model. It is based on the generalized boundary conditions imposed on the strip median lines and leads to the singular and hypersingular integral equations discretized using quadrature formulas of interpolation type. This algorithm has guaranteed convergence and controlled accuracy of computations. It enables fast simulation of structures consisting of many noble-metal strips. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
