Abstract

The Bates Large Acceptance Spectrometer Toroid (BLAST) is a detector designed to study the spindependent electromagnetic response of few-body nuclei at momentum transfers up to 1 (GeV/c)² at the MIT/Bates Linear Accelerator Center's South Hall Ring (SHR). The BLAST detector consists of an eight-sector copper coil array producing a toroidal magnetic field, instrumented with two opposing wedge-shaped sectors of wire chambers, scintillation detectors, Cerenkov counters, neutron detectors, a lead-glass forward calorimeter, and recoil detectors. The ability of BLAST to carry out multi-particle detection over a large solid angle from polarized internal targets will provide an unprecedented and unique opportunity to study simultaneously the spin structure of the few-body nuclear ground states, the reaction mechanisms, and the nucleon form factors. Presently, BLAST is under construction and it is on schedule to be done in summer 2001. A status of the project is presented as well as highlights of the scientific program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Sensitivity to the quadrupole transition form factors (C2 and E2) of the N-Δ excitation can be obtained by measuring double-polarization electromagnetic observables in the Δ-region. Such measurements have been carried out with the internal target facility at NIKHEF. Radiative corrections are an important ingredient of the data interpretation. They need to be evaluated carefully, taking into account their spin-dependence, in order to compare the data to theoretical models of pion electroproduction. From these comparisons the E2/M1 and C2/M1 ratios can be extracted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report on the results of studies of the longitudinal electron polarization in the AmPS storage ring at NIKHEF. The ring was operated using a partial Siberian snake at the first magic energy, and a full Siberian snake between 440 MeV and 720 MeV. We have investigated the effect of high beam currents in the ring, and found that some of the electron polarization is lost if the beam current becomes larger than approx. 120 mA. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Recent studies of neutrino oscillations have established the existence of finite neutrino masses and mixing between generations of neutrinos [1]. The combined results from studies of atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, reactor antineutrinos and neutrinos produced at accelerators paint an intriguing picture that clearly requires modification of the standard model of particle physics. These results also provide clear motivation for future neutrino oscillation experiments as well as searches for direct neutrino mass and nuclear double-beta decay. I will discuss the program of new neutrino oscillation experiments aimed at completing our knowledge of the neutrino mixing matrix.

Abstract

A study of the properties of the Bs meson decays has been done using a full Monte Carlo simulation of the CMS detector. The CMS pixel detector allows a precise measurement of the Bs decay vertices which are displaced from the proton‐proton interaction point. This facilitates a time dependent analysis of the angular correlations between the Bs decay products. In particular, the decay Bs→(J/ψ)φ→μ+μ−K+K− enables measurements of the width difference between heavy and light mass eigenstates. Furthermore, it permits a measurement of the CP violating phase φs which is sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model.
