We studied the electronic structure of CaFe2As2 and EuFe2As2 using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy. The Fe 2p and As 3d core-level spectra of these two compounds show unusual features. The valence band spectra exhibit opening of a gap across SDW transitions. In EuFe2As2, the signature of antiferromagnetic transition is manifested via enhancement of Eu 4f intensity and opening of a second gap at the Fermi level. Interestingly, high resolution spectra of CaFe2As2 also reveal signature of a second gap at lower temperatures although no phase transition was observed in this temperature range. We have studied the anisotropic magnetic behavior of the rare earth intermetallic compound Dy6Cr4Al43. This compound crystallizes in the hexagonal symmetry and orders ferromagnetically at 8.3 K as confirmed by the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. A significant anisotropy in the magnetization is observed between the c axis and the ab-plane. The easy axis liesin theab-plane at low temperatures; however it orients itselfalong the c-axis above 170 K as inferred from the susceptibility data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The superconducting host LaRh3B2 displays interesting coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism with 1% Gd3+ substitution. On 20% Gd3+ doping, the high field response is quasi-ferromagnetic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report two new orthorhombic compounds U2Os3Al9 and Ce2Os3Al9 showing signatures of strongly correlated electron behavior. The U-compound orders antiferromagnetically at 7 K inferred from magnetization and heat capacity. The resistivity data reveal a heavy fermion, Kondo like behavior with a negative temperature coefficient below 300 K. However, Ce2Os3Al9 shows Pauli paramagnetic behavior with a magnitude of susceptibility and the electronic heat capacity similar to that of intermediate valent systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
