Abstract

New experimental results were obtained with relativistic exotic nuclei produced via uranium projectile fragmentation and projectile fission at the in-flight separator FRS. 60 neutron-rich isotopes have been discovered in the element range from Nd to Ac and their production cross sections have been measured. In other experimental campaigns the fragments were separated in flight and injected into the storage-cooler ring ESR for accurate mass- and lifetime measurements. New mass values have been measured for 33 nuclides in the element range from Pt to U circulating in the ESR. The systematic error has been reduced to about 10 keV which was possible by a new evaluation method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The half-lives of excited isomeric states observed in 195Au, 201Tl and 215Rn are reported for the first time. Delayed γ-rays were correlated with nuclei produced in the projectile fragmentation of relativistic 238U ions, unambiguously identified in terms of their atomic number (Z) and mass-to-charge ratio (A/Q) after traversing an in-flight separator. The observation of a long-lived isomeric state in 195Au with t1/2 = 16-4+8 μs is presented. Two shorter-lived isomeric states were detected in 201Tl and 215Rn with t1/2 = 95-21+39 and 57-12+21 ns respectively. In total 24 isomeric states were identified in different nuclei from Pt to Rn (A ∼ 200) during the current study, the majority of which were previously reported. The wealth of spectroscopic data provides the opportunity to determine the isomeric ratios over a wide range of Z, A and angular momentum (I [barred_aitch]) of the reaction products. In particular, high-spin states with I >= 18 [barred_aitch] provide a robust test of theoretical models of fragmentation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Advanced nuclear structure models predict the presence of the shell closures N = 14, 16 in neutron-rich O isotopes rather than N = 20. Spectroscopic investigations performed at the neutron drip line have recently confirmed such predictions showing that the 24O is a doubly magic nucleus (Z = 8, N = 16). Predictions within the shell model calculation for the 23,24O ground state have been confirmed measuring their spectroscopic factors. Abstract

The two-proton radioactivity of the previously unknown 19Mg ground-state is observed by tracking the decay products in-flight. The trajectories of the 2p-decay products, 17Ne+p+p, have been measured by using tracking micro-strip detectors which allowed to reconstruct the 2p-decay vertices and fragment correlations. The half-life of 19Mg deduced from the measured vertex distribution is 4.0(15) ps in the system of 19Mg. The Q-value of the 2p-decay of the 19Mg ground-state inferred from the measured p-p-17Ne correlations is 0.75(5) MeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The possibility that big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) may produce nontrivial amounts of 6Li is under study since the recent observations of this element in old halo stars. However, the interpretation of these observations needs a precise knowledge of the reaction rate of D(α, γ)6Li which, at present, is extremely uncertain (a factor of 20) at the energies of astrophysical interest (Ecm ≤ 300 keV). This uncertainty originates from difficulties in both theoretical estimates and experimental determinations of the D(α, γ)6Li capture reaction cross section. New measurements of the cross section of D(α, γ)6Li reaction using Coulomb dissociation of 6Li at 150 A MeV have been performed recently at GSI. Abstract

The population of metastable states produced in relativistic-energy fragmentation of a 238U beam has been measured. For states with high angular momentum, I=17h and I=21.5h, a higher population than expected has been observed, with the discrepancy increasing with angular momentum. By considering two sources for the angular momentum, related to single-particle and collective motions, a much improved description of the experimental results can be obtained. Abstract

The ground state structure of the near drip-line 23O nucleus and neutron-rich 17,21O isotopes has been investigated at GSI via exclusive measurements of one-neutron Coulomb breakup reactions with a Pb target using secondary beams of the corresponding projectiles at 400–600 MeV/u. Differential cross sections for electromagnetic dissociation have been measured and compared with the calculated ones in a direct breakup model. The cross section dσ/dE* (excitation energy E*), further differentiated according to the observed (excited) states of the remaining nucleus, provides spectroscopic information on the ground state of these nuclei. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

One-nucleon removal reactions at relativistic energies have been used as spectroscopic tool to obtain information about the ground state properties of several neutron-rich isotopes in the sd-shell. Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the emerging fragments after one-nucleon removal cross-sections were measured. The relative contributions of the remaining fragments in their ground and excited states have been determined from measurements of γ rays in coincidence with the longitudinal momentum distributions. The interesting case of 23O will be directly address. The interpretation of our experimental results in the framework of a simple theoretical model will favours a spin and parity assignment of 1/2+ for the 23O ground state in agreement with shell model predictions. © 2004 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In an experiment performed at the GSI Fragment Separator the decay of 45Fe has been investigated. Five 45Fe atoms were implanted in a silicon telescope mounted inside a high-efficiency NaI detector. The implantation events were correlated with radioactive decay signals. One of them was consistent with the β decay of 45Fe accompanied by the emission of a 10 MeV proton. In each of the four other decay events, a signal corresponding to the emission of 1.1 ± 0.1 MeV particle(s) was recorded with no coincident signals in the NaI detector. This observation represents the first evidence for the two-proton ground state decay of 45Fe. Abstract

In experiments at the FRS of GSI and at the SISSI-LISE3 facility of GANIL, the decay of the proton drip-line nucleus [sup 45]Fe has been studied after projectile fragmentation of a [sup 58]Ni primary beam. Fragment-implantation events have been correlated with radioactive decay events in silicon telescopes on an event-by-event basis. The decay-energy spectrum of [sup 45]Fe implants shows a distinct peak consistent with a two-proton ground-state decay of [sup 45]Fe. None of the events in the peak were found to be in coincidence with γ radiation or with β particles which were searched for in the telescope-surrounding detectors. The decay energy for [sup 45]Fe agrees nicely with several theoretical predictions for two-proton emission. These predictions strongly support the observed decay to be a simultaneous two-proton ground-state decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Using the FRS at GSI, the longitudinal momentum distributions of the emerging fragments after breakup and the one-nucleon removal cross-sections were measured. The relative contributions of the remaining fragments ([sup 7]Be and [sup 22]O) in their ground and excited states have been determined from measurements of γ rays in coincidence with the longitudinal momentum distributions. In the [sup 8]B case, the experimental breakup data on two different targets (C and Pb) allow a determination of the weight of the [sup 7]Be[sup *] component in the [sup 8]B ground state wave function as (13.3±2.2) %. These results are discussed in the context of a theoretical three-body model. Abstract

Neutron deficient nuclei near [sup 100]Sn have been produced by projectile fragmentation of a 1 A-GeV [sup 112]Sn beam in a beryllium target. The fragments were separated in the magnetic spectrometer FRS at GSI, Darmstadt. The unambiguously identified ions were stopped in a highly segmented silicon strip detector stack which was designed to measure the halflives and the total energy of emitted particles with very low background and high efficiency. We were able to study [sup 102]Sn in decay spectroscopy for the first time and establish a decay scheme for the daughter nuclide [sup 102]In. With the measurement of the halflife and the Q-value the Gamov-Teller strength could be deduced. Additionally the Q-value of [sup 98]Cd was measured with high precision and we obtained the halflives of [sup 101]Sn, [sup 103]Sn and [sup 100]In and the absolute branching ratio of beta-delayed proton emission of [sup 101]Sn. We report halflives of rp-process waiting point nuclei between [sup 80]Zr and [sup 92,93]Pd and the observation of very fast decays for the heaviest odd-odd N=Z nuclei, [sup 90]Rh, [sup 94]Ag and [sup 98]In, in agreement with superallowed Fermi transitions. In addition halflives of [sup 75]Sr, [sup 77]Y, [sup 79]Zr, [sup 83]Mo, [sup 87]Tc, [sup 91,92,93]Rh and [sup 99]In were measured. Finally, with our highly efficient identification system we were able to identify two new nuclei, [sup 76]Y and [sup 78]Zr, close to the proton dripline. © 2002 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

We present a new method for precise mass measurements of short-lived hot nuclei. These nuclei were produced via projectile fragmentation, separated with the FRS and injected into the storage ring ESR being operated in the isochronous mode. The revolution time of the ions is measured with a time-of-flight detector sensitive to single particles. This new method allows access to exotic nuclei with half-lives in the microsecond region. We report on first results from this novel method obtained with measurements on neutron-deficient fragments of a chromium primary beam with half-lives down to 50 ms. Abstract

Schottky Mass Spectrometry turned out to be an excellent tool for systematic nuclear mass measurements. The newly developed data acquisition system [1] which yields several advantages for the data analysis, was used for the first time in Nov. 1997. Instead of online Fourier transformation as in former measurements [2,3] the signal is now digitized with a sampling rate of 640 kHz (16 bits of resolution) and stored as time-captures. With a continuous data rate of 1.2MB/s nearly 1TB of raw data were stored. The Fast Fourier Transformation offline analysis allows the study of the dynamical behavior of the stored ions in the ESR including cooling forces and decay. Abstract

The Rare Isotope Spectroscopic INvestigation at GSI (RISING) project is a major pan-European collaboration. Its physics aims are the studies of exotic nuclear matter with abnormal proton-to-neutron ratios compared with naturally occurring isotopes. RISING combines the FRagment Separator (FRS) which allows relativistic energies and projectile fragmentation reactions with EUROBALL Ge Cluster detectors for $\gamma$ spectroscopic research. The RISING setup can be used in two different configurations. Either the nuclei of interest are investigated after being stopped or the heavy ions hit a secondary target at relativistic energies and the thereby occurring excitations are studied. For the latter case, MINIBALL Ge detectors and the HECTOR array are used in addition. Example achievements of the Fast Beam setup are presented and compared to various shell model calculations, while for the Stopped Beam setup initial results are shown.
