Abstract

The primary energy of the ultra-high energy cosmic rays(UHECR) are measured with the number of fluorescence photons which are detected with fluorescence detectors(FD) in the Telescope Array experiment(TA). Howevery since there is large uncertinty as 19% in the measurement of the energy scale, the most important theme is improvement of the energy calibration. The electron light source(ELS) is a small electron linear accelerator for new energy calibration. The ELS is located 100 m far from the FD station, and injects electron beam which is accelerated to 40 MeV energy into the sky. We can calibrate the FD energy scale by detection the air shower directly which is generated by the electron beam. The ELS was developed in KEK Japan, and moved to the TA site in March 2009. We started the beam operation in September 2010, in consequence we detected the air shower which was generated by electron beam in the air. The output kinetic energy of the electron beam was 41.1 MeV, we adjusted the output charge from 40 to 140 pC/pulse. We expect that we can improve the uncertinty of the energy scale to about 10% with the ELS, futhermore ELS will be a very useful apparatus for R&D of future UHECR observation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The High Resolution Fly’s Eye (HiRes) observatory has been collecting Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) data since 1997. The experiment observes cosmic ray air showers via the air fluorescence technique and consists of two observatory sites separated by 12.6 km in the western Utah desert. The two stations can each measure the cosmic rays in monocular mode. In addition, the data from the two stations can also be combined to form a stereo measurement of the air showers. The experiment measures such properties as the energy spectrum, chemical composition, and p-air cross-section of these cosmic rays. It also searches for point sources and other anisotropy. The spectrum is measured above ∼3 × 1017 eV and shows significant structure including the “ankle” and a steep fall off which is consistent with the expectation of the GZK. threshold. The spectrum is inconsistent with a continuing spectrum at the 5σ level. The composition is measured using the Xmax technique. It was found to be predominantly light and unchanging over the range from 1018 to 3 × 1019 eV. Finally, several different styles of searches for anisotropy in the data were performed. Abstract

The MIT Bates 1 GeV electron scattering facility has recently completed a demanding set of parity violating experiments on the proton and the deuteron. These experiments required a polarized electron beam of unprecedented quality and high average currents. The facility has invested heavily in infrastructure for producing polarized beams and measuring beam polarization. This infrastructure includes a test beam set-up, a transmission polarimeter at 20 MeV, a laser back-scattering Compton polarimeter and a Siberian Snake. The polarized source group is also actively pursuing laser systems and photocathodes that could deliver high polarization, high peak current and moderate average current beams to meet the needs of the physics programs at Bates in the coming years. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

The neutron-proton bremsstrahlung process (np→npγ) provides a unique and sensitive probe of meson exchange currents in the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The differential cross section for this process is being measured at LANSCE. A liquid hydrogen target is exposed to the intense, pulsed neutron beam from the WNR facility, and the scattered neutrons and recoil protons are observed in coincidence at angles between 20° and 36° on opposite sides of the beam. Measurement of the neutron and proton energies allows full kinematic reconstruction of each event. The resulting angular distributions of the bremsstrahlung photons will be compared with the predictions of a theoretical calculation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The radiative neutron capture process plays an important role in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) models. Recent measurements of the deuterium abundance in high-redshift hydrogen clouds have allowed a precise comparison of the light elemental abundances with BBN-model predictions. These measurements have also demonstrated the need for more precise cross section data. In particular there are very few measurements of the np?d? cross section in the energy region of interest to BBN, none of which cover the important energy range of 50-400keV. Measurements of this cross section are bing undertaken at the WNR facility of the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We analyze the relationship between the evolution of simple population processes and the rate of emigration of individuals. An external monitoring scheme is defined by counting the number leaving the population in fixed time intervals. This is the analogue of photon counting in quantum optics. It is a reasonable measurement in many situations of interest and also has the merit of being analytically tractable. The formalism we develop is used to investigate the statistical and correlation properties of two stochastic population models that give rise to identical first order probability densities. The first is the birth-death- immigration process for which many well-known results can be found in the literature. The second is based on a population sustained by multiple immigration. This model is a generalization of the pair process investigated previously [1]. It can be used to generate populations with a range of equilibrium densities including those with power law tails to be described in a companion paper. Here we show that, in the case of a geometric distribution of multiples, the equilibrium density is negative binomial and higher order joint statistical properties must be used to distinguish the model from the conventional birth-death-immigration process. Formulae characterizing the integrated counting statistics of the two models are derived and it is shown how they may be exploited to achieve this objective. © 2003 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
