BaSnO3 has been studied for photovoltaic application for many decades in addition to its popular dielectric studies. However, a complete investigation of its remarkable optical properties may groom this novel perovskite as multipurpose system covering wide variety of optical and electrical applications. In this regard, few studies have been dedicated to investigate its photoluminescence properties. In this work nanocubes of BaSnO3 were prepared in simple solid-state reaction. X-ray diffraction studies, field emission scanning electron microscopic studies and energy dispersive X-ray studies confirmed its structural purity, cube like morphology and proper composition respectively. The optical band gap of this system was studied in detail to determine its band gap which was found to be in UV range. The samples were then excited with UV photons to study its luminescence response. The persistent nature of its luminescence response was confirmed from time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) study which showed that the as synthesized samples were able to emit persistent blue radiation for duration∼1.4 microseconds indicating its future application in emerging LED sector. Using the UV excitation phenomenon, the sample was subjected to undergo water disinfection test to remove methylene blue. A moderate degradation performance with degradation rate constant ∼0.02 min−1 was observed for the sample which uncovers potential multifunctional nature of this novel perovskite.

Nanoceramic hydroxides are important functional materials which hold enormous potential to host important applications. Here we report synthesis and characterization of nano magnesium hydroxide. These hydroxides are synthesized by a very simple and inexpensive aqueous chemical route using two different precursors. The structural, morphological, optical and vibrational properties of the powders were evaluated by conventional characterization techniques and were compared with each other. The morphology having porous nanostructure assemblies with vacant channels as seen here may provide high surface area eventually offering themselves for future technological applications.

We report the fabrication of Cu2SnS3 (CTS) thin films by a non-vacuum and low cost spray pyrolysis technique. Annealing of the as-deposited film in the sulphur atmosphere produces highly stoichiometric, granular and crystalline CTS phase. The CTS thin films shows direct optical band gap of 1.58 eV with high absorption coefficient of 105 cm−1. Hall measurement shows the carrier concentration of the order of 1021 cm-3 and a favourable resistivity of 10-3 Ω cm. A solar cell architecture of Glass/FTO/CTS/CdS/Al:ZnO/Al was fabricated and its current-voltage characteristic shows an open circuit voltage, short circuit current density and fill-factor of 12.6 mV, 20.2 µA/cm2 and 26% respectively. A further improvement in the solar cell parameters is underway.

CdTe being a direct band gap semiconductor, is mostly used in photovoltaics. Here we present, the synthesis of CdTe thin film on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate potentiostatically using 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Bmim][Ac]) ionic liquid (IL) bath at 90 °C. Major advantages of using electrodeposition involves process simplicity, large scalability & economic viability. Some of the benefits offered by IL electrolytic bath are low vapour pressure, wide electrochemical window, and good ionic mobility. Cd(CH3COO)2 (anhydrous) and TeO2 were used as the source precursors. The IL electrolytic bath temperature was kept at 90 °C for deposition, owing to the limited solubility of TeO2 in [Bmim][Ac] IL at room temperature. Cathodic electrodeposition was carried out using a three electrode cell setup at a constant potential of -1.20 V vs. platinum (Pt) wire. The CdTe/FTO thin film were annealed in argon (Ar) atmosphere. Optical study of nanostructured CdTe film were done using UV-Vis-IR and Raman spectroscopy. Raman analysis confirms the formation of CdTe having surface optics (SO) mode at 160.6 cm−1 and transverse optics (TO) mode at 140.5 cm−1. Elemental Te peaks at 123, 140.5 and 268 cm−1 were also observed. The optical band gap of Ar annealed CdTe thin film were found to be 1.47 eV (absorbance band edge ∼ 846 nm). The optimization of deposition parameters using acetate-based IL electrolytic bath to get nearly stoichiometric CdTe thin film is currently being explored.

In this work, we consider the relativistic generalization of the theory of Brownian motion for the (1+1) dimensional case, which is again consistent with Einstein’s special theory of relativity and reduces to standard Brownian motion in the Newtonian limit. All the generalizations are made considering Special theory of relativity into account. The particle under consideration has a velocity close to the speed of light and is a free Brownian particle suspended in a heat bath. With this generalization the velocity probability density functions are also obtained using Ito, Stratonovich and Hanggi-Klimontovich approach of pre-point, mid-point and post-point discretization rule. Subsequently, in our work, we have obtained the relativistic Langevin equations in the presence of an electromagnetic field. Finally, taking a special case of a constant vector potential and a constant electric field into account the Langevin equations are solved for the momentum and subsequently the velocity of the particle. Using a similar approach to the Fokker-planck equations of motion, the velocity distributions are also obtained in the presence of a constant vector potential and are plotted, which shows essential deviations from the one obtained without a potential. Our constant potential model can be realized in an optical potential.

Cu2SnS3 thin films were electrodeposited on F:SnO2/Glass substrates at room temperature by using aqueous solution. Copper and tin were first electrodeposited from single bath and post annealed in the presence of sulphur atmosphere to obtain the Cu2SnS3 phase. The Cu2SnS3 phase with preferred orientation along the (112) crystal direction grows to greater extent by the post annealing of the film. Raman analysis confirms the monoclinic crystal structure of Cu2SnS3 with principle mode of vibration as A1 (symmetric breathing mode) corresponding to the band at 291 cm−1. It also reveals the benign coexistence of orthorhombic Cu3SnS4 and Cu2SnS7 phases. Optical properties of the film show direct band gap of 1.25 eV with a high absorption coefficient of the order of 104 cm−1 in the visible region. Photo activity of the electrodeposited film was established in two electrode photoelectro-chemical cell, where an open circuit voltage of 91.6 mV and a short circuit current density of 10.6 µA/cm2 were recorded. Fabrication of Cu2SnS3 thin film heterojunction solar cell is underway.

This report investigates the alternative buffer material as Zn(O,S) for chalcogenide Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) solar cell application. Using the band gap tailoring (band bowing) properties of Zn(O,S) system, performance of CZTS solar cell is explore in the present study. Reducing the band offsets with the hetero-junction partners plays a deterministic role in the performance of the device using Zn(O,S) as buffer layer. The experimental performance of the device with the CZTS/Zn(O,S) film developed by Spray pyrolysis method and analyze using J-V characterization in dark and illuminated configuration. Device with the best achievable performance shows Voc of 150 mV and Jsc of 0.47 mA/cm2 has been presented with the possibility of application in the energy harvesting.

We report the electrical transport properties of ternary half Heusler, LaPdSb, crystallizing in a ZrBeSi-type hexagonal structure. This compound is known to exhibit Pauli paramagnetic behavior. In consistent with the magnetic properties, temperature dependence of resistivity, ρ(T), shows a pronounced curvature with positive temperature coefficient. At low temperature, ρ(T) varies as T2 suggesting the contribution of spin fluctuation scattering. Another noteworthy observation is the presence of a plateau in ρ(T) below 10 K, which is reminiscent of the characteristic behavior of compensated semimetals such as WTe2 and LaSb. The magnetoresistance (MR) is large, positive and non-saturating with a dominant linear MR contribution, probably originating from the linear band dispersion.

Here, we have synthesized CVD-graphene from camphor by using atmospheric pressure (AP)-CVD system on Cu foil. We have studied the effect of growth temperature and camphor concentration by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy. The domain size of the graphene is increasing with an increase in the temperature and camphor quantity. The complete coverage of graphene on the Cu foil achieved at 1020 °C. Higher camphor quantity leads to growth of multilayer graphene. The graphene is transferred by PMMA-assisted method onto the glass substrate. Some aspects of the microscopic structure and dynamics in molten NaF are presented by first principles MD simulations. From distribution plots of NaF inter-ionic distances, F-Na-F angles and local coordination numbers of the melt structure have been studied. The analysis of coordination numbers shows that most of the Na or F are surrounded by four to five ions of opposite polarity. This is different from their solid state form, where octahedral environment is expected for each ion. The dynamical properties of molten NaF are investigated through the self-intermediate scattering function I(Q,t). The calculated I(Q,t) compares well with the experimental one obtained through Fourier transformation. The power spectrum of the velocity autocorrelation function from the MD simulation allows to obtain partial density of states of molten NaF, which links diffusive motions with the vibrational density of states. The short, medium and long time motion of molten NaF is discussed on the basis of these calculations.

Iridates have recently attracted growing interest because of their potential for realizing various interesting phases like interaction driven Mott-type insulator and magnetically driven Slater-type. In this paper, we present the magnetic and electrical transport properties of polycrystalline Sr2IrO4 synthesized by solid state reaction route. We find a ferromagnetic transition at 240 K. The Curie-Weiss law behavior hold good above the magnetic transition temperature TMag = 240 K with a small effective paramagnetic magnetic moment μeff = 0.25 µB/f.u. and a Curie-Weiss temperature, θCW = +100 K. Zero field cooled (ZFC) magnetization shows a gradual dcrease below 150 K, while same for field cooled (FC) below 50 K. Interestingly, below temperatures, ⁓ 10 K, a sharp increase in ZFC and FC magnetization can be seen. A temperature dependent resistivity reveals insulating behavior followed by power law mechanism. The sintering of sample in air leads to the very low value of resistivity is likely related to Sr or oxygen vacancies.

In this paper we discuss synthesis of polycrystalline Y2Ir2O7 by solid state reaction route. XRD analysis shows deviation from stoichiometry which is also confirmed by SEM-EDX analysis. SEM analysis indicates average particle size ranging from 100 nm to 800 µm. EDX analysis gives clear evidence for deviation of stoichiometry of the product. Magnetic analysis is indicating effect of stoichiometry and showing ferromagnetic interaction unlike antiferromagnetic feature. Electrical resistivity is showing similar behavior as reported earlier and reveals no effect of different size of grains or grain boundaries from room temperature to 125 K.

The present study reports a simple, fast and cost effective precipitation technique for synthesis of pure α-PbO powder. Lead monoxide powder with tetragonal structure was synthesized chemically at an elevated temperature using lead acetate and sodium hydroxide solution bath. XRD powder diffraction was used to find the structural properties as well as phase transition from alpha to beta. Study revealed that synthesized PbO powder was crystalline with tetragonal symmetry, having an average crystallite size of 70 nm and lattice constants; a=3.97A, b=3.97A, and c=5.02A. Phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic structure was studied by comparing the XRD data of the annealed samples in the temperature range from 200 °C to 600 °C. UV-Visible spectroscopy was used to find out the optical properties of prepared PbO powder. The film is deposited at 1Pa showing self-buckled (surface peels off) effect as it is exposed to ambient air at atmospheric pressure whereas at 5 Pa, the film shows no such effect. The spectroscopic (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)) analysis suggests that the presence of nitride layer is not the prime cause but the surface oxidation playing a major role for the self-buckling effect. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) confirms the formation of a crystalline Cu3N phase of the film. In this work, we have deposited Cu2O film on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate by electrodeposition. Pure CuO phase has been obtained by annealing the electrodeposited Cu2O film at optimized temperature (500°C) for two hours in air. Copper(I) oxide films showed good photo response with a current density of 0.54mA/cm2 at 0 V vs RHE. It is evident from UV-Visible spectroscopic analysis that the bandgap of Cu(I) and Cu(II) oxides differs from each other resulting in significant change in photo current for these two phases, observed in the PEC study. However CuO film showed better stability as compared to Cu2O film.

Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) is one of the most promising light absorber materials for photovoltaic and photo-electrochemical applications. We synthesized CZTS thin films on a F:SnO2 and soda lime glass substrates by very simple, cost effective and highly scalable spray pyrolysis technique. The films were post treated by rapid thermal processing route of sulfurization to enhance the stoichiometry and crystallinity of the film. The structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties of RTP sulfurized films were studied. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern revealed the formation of tetragonal CZTS phase, which confirmed by Raman analysis with a major peak at 336 cm−1 without the presence of the principle vibration mode of any other secondary phases, such as Cu2SnS3, CuxS(x=1.8,2) etc. The sulfurized film exhibited increased crystallinity and better stoichiometry. The optical and electrical data reveal the direct optical band gap, bulk carrier concentration and resistivity of 1.5 eV, 2.28×1018 cm−3 and 1.21 Ω/cm2, respectively. Finally the photoactivity of CZTS thin films was tested by forming photoelectrochemical cell in 0.1M Na2S2O3 electrolyte (pH=7.72), showing a cathodic photocurrent of nearly 20 µA/cm2 at 0V RHE.

We report the synthesis of photoactive lead monoxide thin films on fluorine doped tin oxide substrate by cost effective spray pyrolysis technique using aqueous solution of lead acetate trihydrate. Influence of substrate temperature on the structural and optical properties of thin films was studied. Polymorph of lead monoxide, litharge (α-PbO), was obtained when the substrate temperature was kept constant at 360 °C. XRD analysis revealed that the deposits were tetragonal structured with preferred orientation along 002 plane. Band gap value was found to be 1.93ev from diffuse reflectance spectra.

Deep eutectic solvents are multi-component mixtures that have freezing point lower than their individual components. Mixture of acetamide+ lithium nitrate in the molar ratio 78:22 and acetamide+ lithium perchlorate in the molar ratio 81:19 are found to form deep eutectic solvents with melting point lower than the room temperature. It is known that the depression in freezing point is due to the hydrogen bond breaking ability of anions in the system. Quasielastic neutron scattering experiments on these systems were carried out to study the dynamics of acetamide molecules which may be influenced by this hydrogen bond breaking phenomena. The motion of acetamide molecules is modeled using jump diffusion mechanism to demonstrate continuous breaking and reforming hydrogen bonds in the solvent. Using the jump diffusion model, it is inferred that the jump lengths of acetamide molecules are better approximated by a Gaussian distribution. This article reports on the gold nanoparticle (Au-NP) induced absorption enhancement in the hydrothermally grown titanium dioxide nanorods (TiO2-NRs). The localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and transfer of electron from Au-NPs attached to the TiO2-NR have been related to their photocatalytic response. The photocurrent enhancement observed in the studies of IPCE has been explained on the basis of electrons in the conduction band of TiO2−NR. The electrons from the Au-NP to the conduction band of TiO2-NR with respect to the wavelength of the incident spectrum shows an increase in efficiency over pristine TiO2-NRs sample. Further, to investigate the role of Au-NP, an absorption spectra with its incident wavelength shows an increase in the visible spectrum in the present study. This provides an explanation for the response to the absorption of the wide bandgap semiconductor oxide which gives an opportunity to develop a hybrid structure on the transparent substrates. The better response of Au-NPs/TiO2-NRs system can be used in photocatalytic processes.
