Polycrystalline sample of EuCu2As2 has been studied by magnetization and Raman scattering measurements. The magnetization result shows that the ground state is antiferromagnetic in the absence of external magnetic field while there is a delicate balance between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions in a narrow temperature range below 15K in the presence of field. Raman scattering experiments on the corresponding high temperature phase reveals distinct peaks with the most intense one at 235 cm−1. The temperature variation of the peak shape and position has been studied and is ascribed to anharmonic behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Casimir force results from the modification of the electromagnetic zero point energy which pervades all of space as predicted by quantum field theory. It depends on the conductivity, dielectric properties and shape of the metal boundaries. For example while the Casimir force is attractive between two flat metal plates it can be repulsive between two hemispheres. In order to measure such material and boundary dependences of the Casimir force, precision measurements of the force and the separation between the two surfaces is necessary. We will discuss experimental techniques to perform such precision measurements of the Casimir force. The Casimir force results from the alteration by boundaries of the zero point electromagnetic energy. We have used the atomic force microscope to make precision measurements of the Casimir force between a large gold coated sphere and a flat plate. The complete dielectric spectrum of the metal is used in the comparison of theory to the experiment. The average statistical precision is around 1% of the forces measured at the closest separation.
