Timely information about the need to thin forests is vital in forest management to maintain a healthy forest while maximizing income. Currently, very-high-spatial-resolution remote sensing data can provide crucial assistance to experts when evaluating the maturity of thinnings. Nevertheless, this task is still predominantly carried out in the field and demands extensive resources. This paper presents a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) to detect the necessity and urgency of carrying out thinnings using only remote sensing data. The approach uses very-high-spatial-resolution RGB and near-infrared orthophotos; a canopy height model (CHM); a digital terrain model (DTM); the slope; and reference data, which, in this case, originate from spruce-dominated forests in the Austrian Alps. After tuning, the model achieves an F1 score of 82.23% on our test data, which indicates that the model is usable in a practical setting. We conclude that DCNNs are capable of detecting the need to carry out thinnings in forests. In contrast, attempts to assess the urgency of the need for thinnings with DCNNs proved to be unsuccessful. However, additional data, such as age or yield class, have the potential to improve the results. Our investigation into the influence of each individual input feature shows that orthophotos appear to contain the most relevant information for detecting the need for thinning. Image understanding plays a pivotal role in various computer vision tasks, such as extraction of essential features from images, object detection, and segmentation. At a higher level of granularity, both semantic and instance segmentation are necessary for fully grasping a scene. In recent times, the concept of panoptic segmentation has emerged as a field of study that unifies semantic and instance segmentation. This article sheds light on the pivotal role of panoptic segmentation as a visualization tool for understanding scene components, including object detection, categorization, and precise localization of scene elements. Advancements in achieving panoptic segmentation and suggested improvements to the predicted outputs through a top-down approach are discussed. Furthermore, datasets relevant to both scene recognition and panoptic segmentation are explored to facilitate a comparative analysis. Deep learning (DL) has made significant advances in computer vision with the advent of vision transformers (ViTs). Unlike convolutional neural networks (CNNs), ViTs use self-attention to extract both local and global features from image data, and then apply residual connections to feed these features directly into a fully networked multilayer perceptron head. In hospitals, hematologists prepare peripheral blood smears (PBSs) and read them under a medical microscope to detect abnormalities in blood counts such as leukemia. However, this task is time-consuming and prone to human error. This study investigated the transfer learning process of the Google ViT and ImageNet CNNs to automate the reading of PBSs. The study used two online PBS datasets, PBC and BCCD, and transferred them into balanced datasets to investigate the influence of data amount and noise immunity on both neural networks. The PBC results showed that the Google ViT is an excellent DL neural solution for data scarcity. The BCCD results showed that the Google ViT is superior to ImageNet CNNs in dealing with unclean, noisy image data because it is able to extract both global and local features and use residual connections, despite the additional time and computational overhead. QR codes (short for Quick Response codes) were originally developed for use in the automotive industry to track factory inventories and logistics, but their popularity has expanded significantly in the past few years due to the widespread applications of smartphones and mobile phone cameras. QR codes can be used for a variety of purposes, including tracking inventory, advertising, electronic ticketing, and mobile payments. Although they are convenient and widely used to store and share information, their accessibility also means they might be forged easily. Digital forensics can be used to recognize direct links of printed documents, including QR codes, which is important for the investigation of forged documents and the prosecution of forgers. The process involves using optical mechanisms to identify the relationship between source printers and the duplicates. Techniques regarding computer vision and machine learning, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), can be implemented to study and summarize statistical features in order to improve identification accuracy. This study implemented AlexNet, DenseNet201, GoogleNet, MobileNetv2, ResNet, VGG16, and other Pretrained CNN models for evaluating their abilities to predict the source printer of QR codes with a high level of accuracy. Among them, the customized CNN model demonstrated better results in identifying printed sources of grayscale and color QR codes with less computational power and training time. In the manuscript, the issue of detecting and segmenting out pavement defects on highway roads is addressed. Specifically, computer vision (CV) methods are developed and applied to the problem based on deep learning of convolutional neural networks (ConvNets). A novel neural network structure is considered, based on a pipeline of three ConvNets and endowed with the capacity for context awareness, which improves grid-based search for defects on orthoframes by considering the surrounding image content—an approach, which essentially draws inspiration from how humans tend to solve the task of image segmentation. Also, methods for assessing the quality of segmentation are discussed. The contribution also describes the complete procedure of working with pavement defects in an industrial setting, involving the workcycle of defect annotation, ConvNet training and validation. Posture detection targets toward providing assessments for the monitoring of the health and welfare of humans have been of great interest to researchers from different disciplines. The use of computer vision systems for posture recognition might result in useful improvements in healthy aging and support for elderly people in their daily activities in the field of health care. Computer vision and pattern recognition communities are particularly interested in fall automated recognition. Human sensing and artificial intelligence have both paid great attention to human posture detection (HPD). The health status of elderly people can be remotely monitored using human posture detection, which can distinguish between positions such as standing, sitting, and walking. The most recent research identified posture using both deep learning (DL) and conventional machine learning (ML) classifiers. However, these techniques do not effectively identify the postures and overfits of the model overfits. Therefore, this study suggested a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) framework to examine and classify human posture in health monitoring systems. This study proposes a feature selection technique, DCNN, and a machine learning technique to assess the previously mentioned problems. The InceptionV3 DCNN model is hybridized with SVM ML and its performance is compared. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed system is validated with other transfer learning (TL) techniques such as InceptionV3, DenseNet121, and ResNet50. This study uses the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)-based feature selection to enhance the feature vector. The study also used various techniques, such as data augmentation, dropout, and early stop, to overcome the problem of model overfitting. The performance of this DCNN framework is tested using benchmark Silhouettes of human posture and classification accuracy, loss, and AUC value of 95.42%, 0.01, and 99.35% are attained, respectively.
