The article provides information about the evolution of the "American Journal of Public Health." It is stated that the establishment of the journal has been decided by the American Public Health Association at their meeting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1910. It has been emphasized that the journal is not the first journal in the country that is dedicated to public health because, before its publication, there has been already an existing public health journal tilted "The Sanitarian." Making "The Sanitarian" as the basis for the organization's publication, they have started publishing their proceedings including papers and reports presented at their meetings. Attitudes toward the liberalized abortion law in New York State were assessed among obstetrician-gynecologists in the state. This paper presents findings on various issues and relates them to a number of variables. This paper describes the present position of family health workers who were trained and worked at a neighborhood health center during the past five years. Problems initially anticipated for such workers did not materialize but others have emerged: lack of self-esteem, lack of upward and lateral mobility, inadequate evaluation of the validity of their training and role, and to some extent paternalism. The article presents a discussion of the orientation of mental health professionals toward human services in the U.S. The author in this paper has traced the development of ideology among mental health professionals and has concluded that a more inclusive human service belief system is developing among mental health and other community caregivers. Growing out of the community mental health ideology which gained prominence during the nineteen sixties, the human service orientation is seen as potentially playing a major role in rationalizing and justifying an even more expanded pattern for organizing comprehensive integrated programs of service for the nineteen-seventies.

Hospitalized mental patients are increasingly being discharged into the community. Yet, despite the construction of hundreds of community mental health centers, readmission rates continue to rise. Evaluation is an increasingly important, time-consuming part of the medical care system. Use of explicit criteria in making such judgments has been recommended to promote consistency and fairness. This paper extends the use of criteria to screening so as to reduce the time physicians spend in evaluation. Can criteria be explicit and complete enough so that a suitably trained non-physician can use them with acceptable accuracy?
