The article presents the life and works of Ellen H. Richards. Richards who is the first female in public health in the U.S. in the 1800s, and pioneer in the field of home economics, was born on December 3, 1842, in Massachusetts. She was the first woman in America to be admitted to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and earn the degree in chemistry. From 1884 to her death she held the position of instructor in sanitary chemistry laboratory at MIT that conduct water analysis.

Atherothrombotic main infarction (ABI) accounted for the majority of the 152 strokes in 5209 people in 16 years of follow-up in the Framingham Heart Disease epidemiology Study. Hypertension (systolic and diastolic) was the major risk factor in ABI, but findings indicate that cardiac abnormalities increase the risk of ABI over and above a blood pressure effect. The article evaluates the appointment and telephone methods of following women who have been treated because of exposure to gonorrhea at the Boston City Hospital in Massachusetts. About 60 percent of 70 the women have returned for a second examination under the appointment method. With the telephone method, about 90.5 percent of the women have called for the results of their cultures and were given an appointment to return to the clinic. The authors stress that having the patients telephone for the results of their cultures seems to improve the efficiency of managing women who are treated.
