Background and Objectives: We provide an initial characterization of e-cigarette use among adult cancer patients., Methods: Data were collected between November 2020 and August 2022 at a comprehensive cancer center., Results: Relatively few (4.59%) of the assessed patients (n = 47,117) reported ever using e-cigarettes. Background and Objectives: Bupropion extended-release (XL; once-daily dosing) has equal efficacy with the sustained-release (SR) formulation (twice-daily dosing) for treating depression, but no studies have compared the two formulations for the treatment of smoking. In a naturalistic open-label study, we compared the effectiveness and the adverse event profiles of XL and SR in treating cancer patients for smoking., Methods: Cancer patients (N = 648) were prescribed bupropion XL (n = 454) or SR (n = 194) alone or in combination with nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) for treating smoking from September 2006 to December 2017. We analyzed 7-day point prevalence abstinence at end-of-treatment (EOT; 3 months postmedication initiation) and evaluated for noninferiority. We also analyzed the adverse event profile differences between the medications., Results: There were no significant differences in abstinent rates at EOT between bupropion XL and SR when using intent-to-treat models, regardless of concomitant NRT. XL demonstrated noninferiority in treatment efficacy compared to SR when excluding those on combined treatment with NRT. Further, there were no significant differences in spontaneously reported adverse events between XL and SR., Conclusions: Our data did not reveal a difference between bupropion XL and SR formulations in terms of effectiveness or adverse event profiles among cancer patients prescribed bupropion alone or in combination with NRTs to quit smoking., Scientific Significance: In this first published direct comparison of their effectiveness and adverse event profiles, we found that bupropion XL is likely therapeutically equivalent to bupropion SR when treating smoking among cancer patients, and produces similar side effects., (© 2022 American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.)

Background and Objective: Tobacco and cannabis are frequently used in combination and cannabis co-use may lead to poor tobacco cessation outcomes. Therefore, it is important to explore if cannabis co-use is associated with a reduced likelihood of achieving successful tobacco abstinence among treatment-seeking tobacco smokers. The present study examined whether current cannabis use moderated tobacco cessation outcomes after 12 weeks of pharmacological treatment (varenicline vs. nicotine patch vs. placebo) with adjunctive behavioral counseling., Methods: Treatment-seeking tobacco smokers (N = 1,246) were enrolled in an intent-to-treat study, of which 220 were current cannabis users. Individuals were randomly assigned to 12 weeks of placebo (placebo pill plus placebo patch), nicotine patch (active patch plus placebo pill), or varenicline (active pill plus placebo patch), plus behavioral counseling. The primary endpoint was biochemically verified 7-day point prevalence abstinence at the end of treatment., Results: Controlling for rate of nicotine metabolism, treatment arm, age, sex, alcohol, and level of nicotine dependence, cannabis users were as successful at achieving biochemically verified 7-day point prevalence abstinence compared to tobacco-only smokers., Conclusions and Scientific Significance: Findings suggest that cannabis use does not hinder the ability to quit tobacco smoking. Future tobacco cessation studies should employ prospective, longitudinal designs investigating cannabis co-use over time and at different severity levels. Black and White smokers may experience aspects of nicotine dependence, including craving, differently. This study used a naturalistic technique, ecological momentary assessment (EMA), to explore differences in craving, mood, expectancy, and smoking enjoyment between Black and White smokers. Participants carried personal digital assistants (PDAs) programmed to obtain multiple daily assessments. Black smokers reported higher craving after smoking and at random assessment times and higher cigarette enjoyment. No differences were found in mood or expectancy. Racial differences in psychological factors related to smoking are explored in the contexts of genetic, sociological, and psychophysiological distinctions. This study investigated DSM-IV depressive disorders as predictors of smoking cessation and reduction in 81 pregnant smokers participating in a smoking cessation trial. Thirty-two percent of the sample met criteria for current dysthymia, major depressive disorder in partial remission, or minor depression. There was no significant reduction in smoking among women with or without current depressive disorders. Unexpectedly, as compared to women without depressive disorders, women with dysthymia significantly increased the mean number of cigarettes smoked (from 8 to 23 cigarettes per day during the 2 to 30 days post-targeted quit date period) and were smoking significantly more cigarettes at 30 days. A main effect approaching significance suggested that women with current depressive disorders were less likely to be abstinent than women without current depressive disorders (OR = 6.3; 3.9% vs. 12.7% at 30 days post-targeted quit date; 0% vs. 6.2% at 30 days post-partum). Results add to previous findings indicating a correlation between depressive symptoms and continued smoking in pregnant women. Further investigation of mood-focused smoking cessation interventions may be warranted.
