This article examines Francisco P. Ramírez’s editorial practice of altering reprint poems culled from periodicals, books, and anthologies from across the Hispanophone world and reprinted in Southern California. By isolating El Clamor Público’s poems, mapping their potential citational provenance and place of publication, and comparing reproductions to originals, I show how Ramírez’s reprint practices shaped authorship and genre in his paper. I propose Ramírez’s reprint practices are important examples of the print culture norm of editing reprint poems to centralize the reading public’s interests and experiences. Ramírez’s reprint practices made the poems more understandable to and relevant for a California audience while at the same time facilitating an intellectual and cultural sense of belonging that resists the reproduction of knowledge and aesthetics from a non-California epistemology. The article presents a reprint of the article "The Scribbler," by Charles Brockden Brown, which appeared in the 1822 issue of "Ladies' Literary Cabinet." This paper marks the beginning and the end of the career of Brown, which is published after his death through his first biographer William Dunlop. The text version of "Ladies' Literary Cabinet" varies from that of Dunlop, which is divided into serial installments, telling the story of misfortunes of Scribbler, a representation of a poor young man.

The article presents views concerning the teaching of antebellum literature with periodicals in the U.S. It considers the role of periodicals by exploring the relationship between literature and politics. According to the article, writings from periodicals are invaluable in helping students to see the world from a contemporary perspective. However, it states that using periodicals to consider fundamental questions about authorship, politics, readership and publication will raise concerns about the multiple connections between art and life.

Although diaries and periodicals appear to be distinct genres with opposing functions and relationships with audience, this essay argues that serial diary fiction reveals the important intersections between the genres. "Susy L--'s Diary," a popular serialized diary novel, exemplifies how both genres take advantage of their fragmented structures to create a sense of intimacy with readers. The fact that the phrase "The Author of Susy L--'s Diary" was employed as an authorial pseudonym for almost twenty-five years furthers my contention that this novel sheds new light on the ways in which periodicals created and sustained relationships with their readership. This article proposes a nineteenth-century term, “fugitive verses,” as a conceptual framework for grappling with the textual and authorial fluidity of newspaper poetry, a genre that simultaneously reflected the stability of literary conventions and refracted those conventions through the exchange, selection, and seriality that defined newspaper networks. The term “fugitive” shifted from referring to poems published to mark one specific occasion in time to those that demonstrate the serial, circulatory, and recursive temporality of newspaper publication and readership. Fugitive poems are fluid, adaptable for new contexts and audiences. They blend the literary with the informational, as the poems’ texts and authorship narratives interweave to appeal to readers. Like other species of newspaper texts, fugitive verses were preserved through circulation, and through dynamic interplays among the networks of writers, editors, and readers who composed, recomposed, excerpted, and remediated them in both newspapers and closely related media, such as scrapbooks. The article explores how magazine contributions nurtured authorial reputation in late 18th century America. It is said that scholars have viewed magazines from a perspective of cultural isolation, to which they were fundamental to the development of literary culture in the post-Revolutionary era. It examines two cases of aspiring literati which include that of Richard B. Davis and that of Benjamin Bridge. Moreover, Davis and Bridge highlights the impact of locality and proximity to literary networks in determining the importance of their periodical publications. Lastly, it asserts that presentation works were more influential in determining authorial reputation than any individual work by an author.
