- Abstract
Joseph H. Hammer, recipient of the Psi Chi/APA Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award, is cited for an outstanding research paper whose findings provide important evidence regarding the promise of a male-sensitive approach to mental health marketing and empirically support the inclusion of theory-driven enhancements in group-targeted mental health campaign efforts. The paper was titled "Men's help-seeking for depression: The efficacy of a male-sensitive brochure about therapy." Hammer's findings suggest that certain male-tailored approaches may improve depressed men's attitudes and reduce self-stigma of seeking help. - Abstract
Apart from economics, the human sciences have not generally been rewarded with high honors from the world community. Psychology has been awarded the distinction of a Nobel Prize only when it has served a role in explicating human behavior in relation to economics. Yet psychological science has played no small part in the work of a number of Nobel Prize winners. This section addresses a selection of that work. Some of the winners of the Nobel Prize in the field of psychology are briefly reviewed. In addition, this selection introduces the papers in this issue.

AWARDS , *MEDICAL research , *PSYCHOLOGY - Abstract
The Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award is sponsored jointly by Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, and the APA. The award is presented annually to the psychology graduate student who submits the best research paper that was published or presented at a national, regional, or state psychological association conference during the past calendar year. The Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award was established in 1979. The award was established to recognize young researchers at the beginning of their professional lives and to commemorate both the 50th anniversary of Psi Chi and the 100th anniversary of psychology as a science (dating from the founding of Wundt's laboratory). It was named for Dr. Edwin B. Newman, the first national president of Psi Chi (1929) and one of its founders. He was a prolific researcher and a long-time chair of the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. Newman was a member of APA's Board of Directors, served as recording secretary of the board from 1962 to 1967, and was parliamentarian for the APA Council of Representatives for many years. He served both Psi Chi and APA in a distinguished manner for half a century. The APA/Psi Chi Edwin B. Newman Graduate Research Award is given jointly by APA and Psi Chi. For an outstanding research paper examining the syndemic theory of health disparities among bisexual adolescents, using national data to model patterns of co-occurrence across sexual risk, substance use, and victimization. Results identified six distinctive subpopulations--Low Risk, Alcohol Use, Peer-Victimization, Sexually Active, Syndemic, and Risk-taking-- which covaried differentially with demographics and suicidality. His paper, titled 'Syndemic Behavioral Risk and Suicidality Among Bisexual Adolescents: A Latent Class Analysis,' and coauthored by Drs. Tania Israel and Karen Nylund-Gibson, was the basis for Dr. Andrew (Andy) Young Choi's selection as the recipient of this research award. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Award for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy is given to a psychologist who has made a distinguished empirical and/or theoretical contribution to research in public policy, either through a single extraordinary achievement or a lifetime of work. This contribution may consist of such factors as research leading others to view specific national policies differently; research demonstrating the importance of the application of psychological methods and theory to public policy; or research clarifying the ways in which scientific knowledge of human behavior informs public policy. The 2020 recipients of the APA Awards for Distinguished Contributions to Research in Public Policy were selected by the 2019 Committee on Psychology in the Public Interest Awards. For over 40 years, Gary Wells has led the scientific study of eyewitness identifications, system problems, and solutions. In 1998, at the request of the U.S. attorney general, Wells joined a Department of Justice working group of police, prosecutors, and researchers, which produced a transformative Guide for Law Enforcement. Wells is also lead author of an APA Division 41 white paper, the first in its history. This white paper was revised and published in 2020. Over the years, Wells has worked tirelessly with policymakers, practitioners, and news media to advocate for the kinds of reforms that prevent wrongful convictions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AWARDS , *OCCUPATIONAL achievement , *MEDICAL research , *CULTURAL pluralism , *SOCIAL psychology , *TRANSCULTURAL medical care - Abstract
Presents an obituary for Harry C. Triandis (1926 –2019). Harry Charalambos Triandis, universally acknowledged as the father of cross-cultural social psychology as well as a leader of industrial/organizational and attitude research, passed away at his retirement home in Carlsbad, California, on June 1, 2019, in his 93rd year. Harry’s academic career began in Montreal, Canada, where he enrolled in the Engineering Program at McGill University. Triandis received his master's degree in commerce from the University of Toronto, and then earned his doctorate in social psychology from Cornell University. He then joined the faculty at the University of Illinois where he remained until retirement in 1997. Early on, Harry realized that cross-cultural research had to employ different methods if the results were to be valid. Valid cross-cultural research, he reasoned, required the involvement of colleagues from the cultures being studied at every step in the process, including instrument design, hypothesis specification and analyses, joint publication, and so on. Thanks to Harry’s untiring efforts to demonstrate their effectiveness, they have become standard procedure in cultural research. Harry was a prolific author, publishing over 200 papers, book chapters, and books. His work has been translated into Chinese, Farsi, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish and spans 60 years (1955–2015). Harry also pursued three other major funded programs of research. The first led to the publication Variations in Black and White Perceptions of the Social Environment in 1976. In his second program of research, he examined differences between Hispanic and Anglo culture in the context of social concerns about integrating the Hispanic community in the 1980s. His last research program culminated in his book on self-deception that was published in 2009. Harry received numerous accolades and awards for his contributions to cross-cultural and social psychology, some including Award for Distinguished Contributions to International Psychology (1994) and the Otto Klineberg Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues to name a few. Harry served as president of six associations or societies of psychology, and his colleagues and students unanimously endorse his status as a world class scholar, but also a world class human being who will be deeply missed in the field of psychology. Warren was born on October 18, 1977, in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. In addition to the intellectual stimulation she received at home, Warren's education was dramatically affected by frequent travel adventures as a youth. As she matured, she was struck by the ways in which cultural and environmental conditions affect the psychological well-being of individuals, groups, and even whole societies. Warren's interest in psychology and issues of cultural diversity took academic shape when she was an undergraduate at Mac alester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where she majored in psychology and Spanish.

AWARDS , *PSYCHOLOGY , *SPECIAL days - Abstract
[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
