Rubén Darío regularly published his writings over a long time in the newspaper La Nación of Buenos Aires, which had been founded by Bartolomé Mitre in 1870. It was in this paper he published most of the first versions of his prose texts, making it an exceptional source for studying his writing. Based on a thorough review of the newspaper, this work presents a new and extended catalogue of Darío’s articles in the paper. A synthesis of the present state of research on his journalistic texts is followed by a statistical analysis of some relevant formal variables. Finally the criteria used to systematize the catalogue are presented, along with the catalogue itself, which contains 697 entries and explanatory comments.

Semanario Ilustrado (1910-1941), founded by typographers Alberto Sánchez and Abraham Cortés, was born as a magazine to provide illustrations, history, information, literature and varieties to its readers. In the second phase of the magazine (1925-1941), the journal will have changes that will affect the way in which the short story literary genre was published in its pages. This paper will show the way in which El Gráfico became a mass media that reaffirmed the difference between the specialized and commercial circuits of the literary, and contributed to the specialization and modernization of the Colombian short story. The analysis proposed in the current paper will be based on the relations between the press and literature and will be focused on short stories written by Ecco Neli y Pedro Gómez Corena.

Emilio Adolfo Westphalen, a hardly researched author in spite of being an important person in Peruvian and Spanish-American poetry, is known by his work as poet and essay-writer, and he is also known by his labour at head of Las Moradas and Amaru reviews. However, his translations works have been completely unnoticed. This paper, the first which analyzes that, fixes his poetic theory about literary translation. The paper emphasizes also the concomitant nature of literary writing and translation.

EnglishIn July 1898, the French magazine Revue des Revues published an enquete addressed to prominent French intellectuals around the question of whether or not the so-called French spirit existed in their literature and the possibility that this essence could be somehow assimilated by foreign authors. Two months later, writer Ruben Dario joined on his own account this debate, releasing “El espiritu frances”, in the weekly newspaper El Sol del Domingo, published in Buenos Aires. In this article, unknown until this date, the author firmly upheld his Francophilia -what was defined as galicismo mental- or identification with the universal modernity epitomized by France, and his right of belonging to the world literature Republic which had Paris as its capital. The text presented and commented in this paper is another piece of the unfinished textual map embodied by Dario, casting some new light on a particular moment of his relationship with the French “intellectual homeland”, a crucial aspect in both his critical discourse and the constitution of his place as a writer.

“From its beginning, Nueva Visión project (nueva visión magazine, 1951-1957, and Nueva Visión publishing house founded in 1955) set out a modernizing objective based on the synthesis of the arts and the problem of form. It was expressed in the Marxist terms that many of its members, such as Tomás Maldonado, Edgar Bayley, Alfredo Hlito, etc., had elaborated within the framework of concrete art. However, the new ideas from architecture and design, such as functionalism, styling or the concept of industrial design "that problematized the value of use and the value of the product as a commodity", would question left ideas. The influence of Max Bill, moreover, has introduced the need for a critical opening and antidogmatism in both political and aesthetic terms, which focused attention on mathematics. Analyzing the articles of nueva visión, and studing the first catalog of the publishing house, this paper reconstructs the course of left ideas in this modernizing project, cosidering its contradictions, as a way of thinking to what extent political aspects legitimize an artistic project or condition its development

The aim of this paper is to reconstruct and present a cultural controversy between Spain and Argentina in the 1930s and whose main characters were Victoria Ocampo and Guillermo de Torre. After Ocampo was accused of writing in French on account of her vanity and snobbishness, Guillermo de Torre illustrated with her figure the tensions between Spain and America, specifically Argentina, based on the unity of the Castilian language and its difficult universality. On her behalf, Ocampo defended herself in what constitutes a great cultural testimony of the elites in Buenos Aires, that were in tension with the colonialist and supremacist attitude of the peninsular intellectuals.

This paper aims to provide an approach to the discursive procedures displayed in Roa Bastos’s Yo el Supremo. We will analyse, in particular, the tension between dictation and proliferation of meaning in connection with the figure of the dictator. Fil: Melone, Juan Manuel. The figure of the vampire in Hispanic literature is a constant. His stay through the centuries within the letters of the American continent invited to wonder about the place of this gothic archetype in the imaginary of contemporary Latin American writers. This paper aims to study the figure of the vampire tales “Reunión con un círculo rojo” (Julio Cortázar, 1977) “Vlad” (Carlos Fuentes, 2004) and “La máscara del dios vampiro” (Mauricio Molina, 2006). Through analysis of these accounts is carried out an analysis of the representation of the figure of the vampire in contemporary Hispanic literature. Also, the textual strategies used are discussed for each of these authors to translate their vision of the vampire and the significance that the vampire myth has for each of them. Ultimately, postulate possible keys that explain its prominence in contemporary culture.

Cultural relationships between Cuba and the United States have been very productive since the Nineteenth Century. Without hesitation, the proximity of Cuba to the great North Country has been a core generator of senses. According to these issues, this paper proposes tracing Marti interest in American philosophy and literature, a neglected aspect by classical Latino Americanism. In this sense, it plans to relocate the work of Martí in the center of nineteenth-century Western canon, establishing a dialogue between Ralph Emerson, Walt Whitman and Martí. This dialogue allows exploring, complicating and reconsidering the weight that had Anglo-Saxon tradition in the construction of Marti’s literature and thought.

This paper studies the representations that the Colombian literary press of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, disseminated about French literary system. Paris symbolized everything “new” and “harmful”, intellectually and aesthetically. The two faces of the same object was the result of tensions and disputes between different groups of Colombian intellectuals, Who sought to exercise, compared to their opponents, some degree of authority. Paris, as a symbol, was an excuse but above all, a critical tool for Colombian intellectuals and writers of the time.
