In this study, S2− ions were found to enhance the fluorescence of cysteine-capped Cu nanoclusters (Cu NCs). High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) measurements, zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements demonstrated that the S2− ion-induced aggregation of the Cu NCs contributed to the fluorescence enhancement of the dispersed Cu NCs. Based on these findings, a highly selective fluorescent probe was developed for the determination of H2S using the S2− ion-enhanced fluorescence of the as-prepared Cu NCs. The relative fluorescence intensity was proportional to the concentration of S2− in the range from 0.2 to 50 μM. The detection limit (S/N = 3) was 42 nM. The proposed method has been successfully applied to determine H2S produced from toys called “Fart Bomb” with recoveries of 97.6–101.8%. The results of the proposed method were in good agreement with those determined by a standard methylene blue method. This work is not only of importance for a better understanding of the aggregation induced emission (AIE) properties of the Cu NCs but also of great potential to find extensive biological applications for H2S. We report a novel approach for preparation of networked gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) using reactive oxygen species (i.e., peroxymonocarbonate, HCO4−) as a novel reducing agent, along with nonionic fluorosurfactant (FSN) assistance. The formation mechanism of the networked AuNPs is demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), UV-visible spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurement and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). In this case, HCO4− serves as a reducing agent for the preparation of the networked AuNPs, and further as a strong oxidizing agent attached to the surface of networked AuNPs, which can trigger the strong CL emission from luminol without the addition of H2O2. In addition, FSN can control and stabilize the crystal morphology of the networked AuNPs, and improve the selectivity of the CL detection system for aminothiols. Fluorosurfactant (FSN)-capped gold nanoparticles (GNPs), which exhibit higher stability at a wider pH range and high ionic strength, were utilized for investigating the chemiluminescence (CL) effect on the reaction between high concentration carbonate (∼0.3 M) and peroxynitrous acid. When the pH of the colloidal solution was 10.2 by dropwise addition of 0.05 M NaOH, FSN-capped GNPs offer an enhanced CL intensity. Based on the CL spectra, XPS spectra and the quenching effect of reactive oxygen species, a possible CL mechanism is proposed. The tolerance of FSN-capped GNPs towards salt concentrations (salt proofing effect) within a large pH range is an interesting feature, compared to the other previously reported work on nanoparticles CL systems. The CL intensity is proportional to the concentration of nitrite in the range from 0.1 to 100 μM. The detection limit (S/N = 3) is 0.036 μM and the relative standard deviation (RSD) for seven repeated measurements of 0.5 μM nitrite was 2.4%. HClO/ClO− is the most effective antibacterial active oxygen in neutrophils. However, its excessive existence often leads to the destruction of human physiological mechanisms. In recent years, the developed luminescent probes for the detection of HClO/ClO− are not only conducive to improve the sensitivity and selectivity of HClO/ClO− detection, but also play a crucial role in understanding the biological functions of HClO/ClO−. In addition, luminescent probe-based biological imaging for HClO/ClO− at sub-cellular resolution has become a powerful tool for biopathology and medical diagnostic research. This article reviews a variety of luminescent probes for the detection of HClO/ClO−in vitro and in vivo with different design principles and mechanisms, including fluorescence, phosphorescence, and chemiluminescence. The photophysical/chemical properties and biological applications of these luminescent probes were outlined. Finally, we summarized the merits and demerits of the developed luminescent probes and discussed their challenges and future development trends. It is hoped that this review can provide some inspiration for the development of luminescent probe-based strategies and to promote the further research of biomedical luminescent probes for HClO/ClO−. Plasmonic nanoparticles with special localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characters have been widely applied for optical sensing of various targets. With the combination of single nanoparticle imaging techniques, dynamic information of reactions and biological processes is obtained, facilitating the deep understanding of their principle and design of outstanding nanomaterials. In this review, we summarize the recently adopted optical analysis of diverse analytes based on plasmonic nanoparticles both in homogeneous solution and at the single-nanoparticle level. A brief introduction of LSPR is first discussed. Colorimetric and fluorimetric homogeneous detection examples by using different sensing mechanisms and strategies are provided. Single plasmonic nanoparticle-based analysis is concluded in two aspects: visualization of chemical reactions and understanding of biological processes. The basic sensing mechanisms and performances of these systems are introduced. The exploitation of highly soluble and responsive AIEgens is essential for further expansion of their practical applications. In this study, dipropyltrimethylammonium bromide-substituted TPE (denoted as o-TPEDTA), a homolateral and dicationic AIEgen, was synthesized and applied for the turn-on detection of casein via hydrophobic interactions. The rapid and sensitive detection of casein was achieved using the designed o-TPEDTA probe with the limit of detection of 0.05 μg mL−1. The satisfying selectivity of over 1000-fold concentration of other probably existing chemicals, including amino acids, sugars and salts, was achieved due to the strong binding affinity between o-TPEDTA and casein. The evaluation of casein in milk powder samples with small relative standard deviations was realized using the o-TPEDTA probe. The accuracy of the o-TPEDTA probe-based detection method was validated by the consistency of the casein detection results with those obtained via a national standard casein evaluation approach. Higher multiplexing in droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) can simplify the detection process of ddPCR-based non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and improve its reliability, making it a practical approach in clinical practice. However, a high level of multiplex ddPCR-based NIPT has rarely been reported. In this study, we developed a multiplex ddPCR assay using universal locked nucleic acid (LNA) probes to reliably identify fetal aneuploidies. We first performed statistical analysis based on the Poisson distribution to evaluate the required number of target DNA molecules and the total number of droplets for a ddPCR assay. Next, we designed two sets of primers and probes to quantify cfDNA from chromosomes 21 and 18 and then determined the disease status of a sample. Finally, we evaluated our multiplex ddPCR assay with 60 clinical plasma samples. All of the 60 clinical samples were correctly identified. The uniform dispersion of silica fillers or other neutral fillers in the polymer matrix is significant for fabricating high-performance polymer-based composites. However, there is a long-standing challenge to provide a comprehensive, wide-area and real 3D distribution map to achieve direct visualization for the dispersion state of neutral silica. Herein, we propose a novel strategy for modifying silica fillers with commercial fluorophores to form fluorescent fillers in a standard manner. Through fluorescence imaging technology, we successfully observed the 2D-planar and 3D-spatial dispersion states of silica fillers in the polymer matrix. This success not only provides a visualized evaluation method for the spatial dispersion of an oxide filler, but also offers great potential in the further establishment of industrialized standards for the polymer-based composite industry. Cataluminescence (CTL) is a specific chemiluminescence (CL) occurring on the surface of solid catalysts during heterogeneous catalytic oxidation reactions, and it is still a young technique compared to conventional CL. In recent years, CTL-based sensors have been widely used in the detection of various analytes. We have witnessed many developments in CTL-based sensing systems for the enhancement of sensitivity or selectivity. This review provides a thorough introduction to the history and development of CTL-based sensing systems. We have briefly discussed the working principles for CTL systems and related the influencing factors first. The development of CTL based on these factors and instruments has been subsequently introduced. Several excellent CTL-based sensing systems have been discussed to highlight their practicality for the analysis of complicated environmental samples. The ratio of reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG ratio) is a greater first indication of disease risk than the total concentration of GSH. However, the interferences from thiolated biomolecules, especially cysteine (Cys), make the accurate detection of GSH/GSSG ratio a technical problem. In this work, we successfully used a mixture of quantum dots (QDs) and ZnAl-LDH nanosheets to fabricate a high electrochemiluminescence resonance energy transfer (ERET) efficiency sensor for GSH from the disturbances of amino acids, especially Cys and GSSG. The mechanisms of high ERET efficiency and selectivity were well investigated with spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculation. The results showed that the interaction force between ZnAl-LDH nanosheets and molecules proved a long-range-ordered space and selective transmission for molecules. Gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) have become one of the most popular materials for sensing of analytes of interest in the last decade, mainly because of their ease in preparation and conjugation, stability, biocompatibility, and size-dependent optical properties. We have witnessed many sensitive and selective Au NP based optical systems for the quantitation of metal ions, anions, proteins, and DNA, based on analyte induced changes in their absorption, fluorescence, and scattering. In this tutorial review, we briefly discuss wet chemical approaches for the preparation of Au NPs. Sensing mechanisms and strategies of Au NP based optical systems are provided to show basic concepts in designing sensitive and selective sensing systems. Strategies for signal amplification applied in Au NP based systems are emphasized for the analysis of trace amounts of analytes in real samples. Many excellent Au NP based optical sensing systems are discussed to highlight their practicality for the analysis of complicated biological and environmental samples. As a well-known environmental pollutant but also an important gaseous transmitter, the specific detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is significant in biological systems. In this study, fluorosurfactant functionalized gold nanorods (FSN-AuNRs) have been proposed to act as selective colorimetric nanoprobes for H2S. With the combination of strong gold–S interactions and small FSN bilayer interstices, FSN-AuNRs demonstrate favorable selectivity and sensitivity toward H2S over other anions and small biological molecules. The practical application of the present method in biological H2S detection was validated with human and mouse serum samples. Photonic crystal fibres appear to be an ideal platform for the realisation of novel optofluidic devices and sensors due to their waveguide nature and microstructured architecture. In this paper, we present the fabrication and characterisation of an in-line photonic crystal fibre microfluidic refractometer enabled by a C-shaped fibre. The C-shaped fibre spliced in-between the photonic crystal fibre and the single-mode fibre allows simultaneous in-line optical signal delivery and analyte fluid feeding. Through an arc discharge pre-treatment technique, we successfully achieve selective exploitation of only the central two channels of the photonic crystal fibre for microfluidic sensing. After constructing a Sagnac interferometer, a highly sensitive refractometer with a sensitivity of 8699 nm per RIU was achieved experimentally; this agrees very well with the theoretical value of 8675 nm per RIU. As a demonstration for label-free optical sensing application, the refractometer was used to measure the concentration of NaCl solution with a sensitivity of 15.08 nm/(1 wt%) and a detection limit of 2.3 × 10−3 wt% (23 ppm). A novel and highly sensitive fiber-optic DNA sensor based on a thin-core fiber modal interferometer (TCFMI) is demonstrated by using a layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technology. Poly(ethylenimine) (PEI), poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) were used for the preparation of a polyelectrolyte multilayer film for DNA detection. The film thickness was measured through a surface profilometer. The surface morphologies of (PEI/PAA)4, (PEI/PAA)4.5 and (PEI/PAA)4(PEI/DNA)1 multilayer films were characterized by atomic force microscopy. The fabricated DNA sensors were tested with different types of target ssDNA solutions with a concentration of 1 μM. The results show that the sensitivity of the TCFMI-based ssDNA sensor is 0.27 nm/matched-base at the concentration of 1 μM and can even distinguish the number of matched bases of ssDNA chains.
