Uncontrolled Li plating in graphite electrodes endangers battery life and safety, driving tremendous efforts aiming to eliminate Li plating. Herein we systematically investigate the boundary of Li plating in graphite electrode for safe lithium-ion batteries. The cell exhibits superior safety performance than that with Li dendrites by defining the endurable amount of uniform Li plating in graphite anode. The presence of "dead Li" can be eliminated owing to the uniform distribution of Li plating, and the average Coulombic efficiency for deposited Li during reversible plating/stripping process is decoupled as high as about 99.5 %. Attributing to the limited Li plating with superior Coulombic efficiency, the LiNi0.5 Mn0.3 Co0.2 O2 | graphite cell achieves a high capacity retention of 80.2 % over 500 cycles. This work sheds a different light on further improving the fast-charging capability, low-temperature performance, and energy density of practical lithium-ion batteries.

Silver nanoclusters containing Ag0 atoms protected by amino acids were synthesized and characterized. Chiral superatomic silver nanoclusters [Ag47 L12 (C≡Ct Bu)16 ]BF4 (L=l-/d-valine or l-/d-isoleucine) have been prepared by reducing AgC≡Ct Bu and amino acids (AAs) with NaBH4 . Single crystal X-ray diffraction revealed that these clusters have T symmetry, and the Ag47 metal kernel can be viewed as a tetracapped truncated tetrahedron (Ag17 ) surrounded with six W-shaped Ag5 units. The clusters are homochiral as evidenced by CD measurements. As for the strong CD signals, large contributions are found from the occupied Ag s,p states (superatomic D states) near the Fermi level. Electron counting revealed that these clusters are 18-electron systems, suggesting they are superatomic clusters. The superatomic nature with a 1S2 1P6 1D10 configuration was supported by DFT calculations. This work paves the way of taking AAs as facile chiral induction agents for the synthesis of metal nanoclusters.

Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) has been widely employed to describe the new phase formed between anode and electrolyte in working batteries. Significant advances have been achieved on the structure and composition of SEI as well as on the possible ion transport mechanism. However, the nucleation and growth mechanism of SEI catches little attention, which requires the establishment of isothermal electrochemical crystallization theory. Herein we explore the virgin territory of electrochemically crystallized SEI. By using potentiostatic method to regulate the decomposition of anions, an anion-derived SEI forms on graphite surface at atomic scale. After fitting the cur-rent-time transients with Laviron theory and Avrami formula, we conclude that the formation of anion-derived interface is surface reaction controlled and obeys the two-dimensional (2D) progressive nucleation and growth model. Atomic force microscope (AFM) images emphasize the conclusion, which reveals the mystery of isothermal electrochemical crystallization of SEI.

Intravesical administration of first-line drugs has shown failure in the treatment of bladder cancer owing to the poor tumor retention time of chemotherapeutics. Herein, we report an intracellular hydrolytic condensation (IHC) system to construct long-term retentive nano-drug depots in situ, wherein sustained drug release results in highly efficient suppression of bladder cancer. Briefly, the designed doxorubicin (Dox)-silane conjugates self-assemble into silane-based prodrug nanoparticles, which condense into silicon particle-based nano-drug depots inside tumor cells. Significantly, we demonstrate that the IHC system possesses highly potent antitumor efficacy, which leads to the regression and eradication of large established tumors and simultaneously extends the overall survival of air pouch bladder cancer mice compared with that of mice treated with Dox. The concept of intracellular hydrolytic condensation can be extended via conjugating other chemotherapeutic drugs, which may facilitate rational design of novel nanomedicines for augmentation of chemotherapy.

In situ evolution of electrocatalysts is of paramount importance in defining catalytic reactions. Catalysts for aprotic electrochemistry such as lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are the cornerstone to enhance intrinsically sluggish reaction kinetics but the true active phases are often controversial. Herein, we reveal the electrochemical phase evolution of metal-based pre-catalysts (Co4 N) in working Li-S batteries that renders highly active electrocatalysts (CoSx ). Electrochemical cycling induces the transformation from single-crystalline Co4 N to polycrystalline CoSx that are rich in active sites. This transformation propels all-phase polysulfide-involving reactions. Consequently, Co4 N enables stable operation of high-rate (10 C, 16.7 mA cm-2 ) and electrolyte-starved (4.7 μL mgS-1 ) Li-S batteries. The general concept of electrochemically induced sulfurization is verified by thermodynamic energetics for most of low-valence metal compounds.

High-energy-density Li metal batteries suffer from a short lifespan under practical conditions, such as limited lithium, high loading cathode, and lean electrolytes, owing to the absence of appropriate solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Herein, a sustainable SEI was designed rationally by combining fluorinated co-solvents with sustained-release additives for practical challenges. The intrinsic uniformity of SEI and the constant supplements of building blocks of SEI jointly afford to sustainable SEI. Specific spatial distributions and abundant heterogeneous grain boundaries of LiF, LiNx Oy , and Li2 O effectively regulate uniformity of Li deposition. In a Li metal battery with an ultrathin Li anode (33 μm), a high-loading LiNi0.5 Co0.2 Mn0.3 O2 cathode (4.4 mAh cm-2 ), and lean electrolytes (6.1 g Ah-1 ), 83 % of initial capacity retains after 150 cycles. A pouch cell (3.5 Ah) demonstrated a specific energy of 340 Wh kg-1 for 60 cycles with lean electrolytes (2.3 g Ah-1 ).

High-dielectric solvents were explored for enhancing the sulfur utilization in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, but their applications have been impeded by low stability at the lithium metal anode. Now a radical-directed, lithium-compatible, and strongly polysulfide-solvating high-dielectric electrolyte based on tetramethylurea is presented. Over 200 hours of cycling was realized in Li|Li symmetric cells, showing good compatibility of the tetramethylurea-based electrolyte with lithium metal. The high solubility of short-chain polysulfides, as well as the presence of active S3 .- radicals, enabled pouch cells to deliver a discharge capacity of 1524 mAh g-1 and an energy density of 324 Wh kg-1 . This finding suggests an alternative recipe to ether-based electrolytes for Li-S batteries.

The lithium metal anode is regarded as a promising candidate in next-generation energy storage devices. Lithium nitrate (LiNO3 ) is widely applied as an effective additive in ether electrolyte to increase the interfacial stability in batteries containing lithium metal anodes. However, because of its poor solubility LiNO3 is rarely utilized in the high-voltage window provided by carbonate electrolyte. Dissolution of LiNO3 in carbonate electrolyte is realized through an effective solvation regulation strategy. LiNO3 can be directly dissolved in an ethylene carbonate/diethyl carbonate electrolyte mixture by adding trace amounts of copper fluoride as a dissolution promoter. LiNO3 protects the Li metal anode in a working high-voltage Li metal battery. When a LiNi0.80 Co0.15 Al0.05 O2 cathode is paired with a Li metal anode, an extraordinary capacity retention of 53 % is achieved after 300 cycles (13 % after 200 cycles for LiNO3 -free electrolyte) and a very high average Coulombic efficiency above 99.5 % is achieved at 0.5 C. The solvation chemistry of LiNO3 -containing carbonate electrolyte may sustain high-voltage Li metal anodes operating in corrosive carbonate electrolytes.
