The scarcity of reliable methods for synthesizing chiral gem‐diarylmethine borons limits their applications. Herein, we report a method for highly enantioselective dirhodium‐catalyzed B−H bond insertion reactions with diaryl diazomethanes as carbene precursors. These reactions afforded chiral gem‐diarylmethine borane compounds in high yield (up to 99 % yield), high activity (turnover numbers up to 14 300), high enantioselectivity (up to 99 % ee) and showed unprecedented broad functional group tolerance. The borane compounds synthesized by this method could be efficiently transformed into diaryl methanol, diaryl methyl amine, and triaryl methane derivatives with good stereospecificity. Mechanistic studies suggested that the borane adduct coordinated to the rhodium catalyst and thus interfered with decomposition of the diazomethane, and that insertion of a rhodium carbene (generated from the diaryl diazomethane) into the B−H bond was most likely the rate‐determining step. Herein, we report a KIO4‐mediated, sustainable and chemoselective approach for the one‐pot C(sp2)−H bond hydroxymethylation or methylenation of imidazo‐heteroarenes with formaldehyde, generated in situ via the oxidative cleavage of ethylene glycol or glycerol (renewable reagents) through the Malaprade reaction. In the presence of ethylene glycol, a series of 3‐hydroxymethyl‐imidazo‐heteroarenes was obtained in good to excellent yields. These compounds are important intermediates to access pharmaceutical drugs, e.g. Zolpidem. Furthermore, by using glycerol, bis(imidazo[1,2‐a]pyridin‐3‐yl)methane derivatives were selectively obtained in good to excellent yields. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A promising strategy to break through the selectivity‐conversion limit of direct methane conversion to achieve high yields is the protection of methanol via esterification to a more stable methyl ester. We present an aerobic methane‐to‐methyl‐ester approach that utilizes a highly dispersed, cobalt‐containing solid catalyst, along with significantly more favorable reaction conditions compared to existing homogeneously‐catalyzed approaches (e.g. diluted acid, O2 oxidant, moderate temperature and pressure). The trifluoroacetic acid medium is diluted (<25 wt %) with an inert fluorous co‐solvent that can be recovered after the separation of the methyl trifluoroacetate via liquid–liquid extraction at ambient conditions. Silica‐supported cobalt catalysts are highly active in this system, with competitive yields and turnovers in comparison to known aerobic transition metal‐based catalytic systems. Fluorine incorporation into organic molecules is expected to lower the pKa of neighboring functionality via its strong electron‐withdrawing effect, and this strategy has been widely exploited in diverse disciplines. Herein, we report a striking anomalous α‐fluorine substitution effect on the α‐Csp3‐H acidity. We have experimentally measured the pKa values of a series of popular nucleophilic monofluoromethylating reagents α‐fluoro(phenylsulfonyl)methane derivatives as well as their C‐H analogues by Bordwell's overlapping indicator method in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. Contrary to expectations, we found that α‐fluorine substituent does not generally enhance but rather weaken the α‐Csp3‐H acidity of most (phenylsulfonyl)methane derivatives. DFT computations reproduce and provide insight into the anomalous α‐fluorine effect. A correlation was identified between the C‐H pKa of (phenylsulfonyl)methane derivatives and Mayr's nucleophilicity parameter (N) of the corresponding carbanions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: An unprecedented MnI‐catalyzed (2‐indolyl)methylation of heteroarenes is reported. This method makes use of an aromatizing cascade strategy to install a (2‐indolyl)methyl group into target molecules, thereby leading to the expedient synthesis of previously challenging and important unsymmetrical diheteroarylmethanes, in particular bis(2‐indolyl)methanes. The proposed cascade process comprises the reorganization of multiple bonds with controlled regioselectivity and high atom economy and can be performed on a gram‐scale. Furthermore, a metal‐free C−H propargylation is observed. The diverse application of this method is also demonstrated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a self-assembled template that consists of tetraphenylmethane derivatives and adopts a periodic lateral arrangement on a Au(111) surface with acetyl groups sticking out of the molecular film. By using the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope, these acetyl groups can be removed in a spatially controlled way without significantly affecting the remaining molecular assembly. The chemically modified molecules can be readily distinguished from the original ones such that information can be engraved in the molecular film. Both the modified nature of an individual molecule and the order of the molecular film are shown to persist at room temperature. The mesh size of this molecular graph paper can be tuned by varying the length of the molecular spacer so that writing and reading information on the nanoscale with variable letter sizes becomes possible.
