Canine mammary tumors (CMTs) represent a prevalent malignancy in female dogs. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical regulators of gene expression and are implicated in various cancer types, including CMTs. This study aimed to investigate the altered miRNA expression patterns in CMTs and their potential role in tumorigenesis. We analyzed miRNA profiles in a cohort of CMT samples and matched normal tissues using a custom canine panel microarray slide (Agilent technology). The bioinformatics analysis overlapped the altered miRNA signature in CMT with human breast cancer miRNA (TCGA patient cohort). The biological significance of this altered miRNA signature was evaluated using Ingenuity Pathway Analysis. Our results revealed a distinctive miRNA expression signature associated with CMTs compared to normal mammary tissues, and when overlapped with human breast cancer miRNA data (TCGA cohort), we identified a common signature composed of one overexpressed transcript and eight downregulated transcripts. In conclusion, our study provides comprehensive insights into the altered miRNA expression patterns in CMTs, shedding light on their potential contribution to the pathogenesis of these tumors. Further investigation into the specific roles of these dysregulated miRNAs is warranted to elucidate their precise involvement in CMT progression and to explore their therapeutic implications. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of pomegranate juice consumption on bone histomorphometric parameters using an animal model. The animals (rats) were divided into 7 experimental groups. The groups differed in the concentration of pomegranate juice administered. The control group received only water, the other groups were supplied with commercial or freshly squeezed pomegranate juice at concentrations of 10%, 25% and 50%. To study the structure of the proximal end of the tibia, a Skyscan 1174 X-ray microtomography device, equipped with a 1.3Mp FW VDS camera, was used. The proximal end (metaphysis) of the left tibia was examined. The following bone tissue parameters were analysed: bone mineral density (BMD) (mm3), the number of trabeculae (Tb.N) (mm-1), trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) (mm) and trabecular thickness (Tb. Th) (mm), BS/BV(mm-1). It was found that 25% pomegranate juice, both freshly squeezed and commercial, significantly increased bone density (BMD), increased trabecular thickness (Tb.TH), and reduced the distance between trabeculae (Tb.SP) compared to the control group and groups receiving juice at other concentrations. The highest BMD, the thickest trabeculae and the smallest distance between trabeculae were observed after the application of fresh 25% pomegranate juice. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of dried ostrich meat in the diet on the hematological blood parameters using the rat model. The study was carried out on 72 six‐week‐old male Wistar rats divided into 2 groups: rats fed for a month standard diet (SD) with iron level of 200 ppm and rats fed diet with 5ppm of iron (FeD) (n=36 rats in each group). Afterwards this period animals were classified as non- and iron deficient based on hemoglobin values and either of the 2 groups was further divided into 4 groups of 9 animals: receiving the SD, SD with ostrich meat, FeD or FeD with ostrich meat. Blood samples were collected to determine hematological parameters i.e. red blood cells (RBC), the hemoglobin (HGB), ferritin level and hematocrit (HCT). The ferritin and HCT levels in rats suffering from iron deficiency receiving SD with ostrich meat were significantly higher at the end of the experiment as compared to the beginning of it (91.90 ng/mL vs. 59.60 ng/mL (p=0.005) and 46.82 vs. 34.41% (p=0.05). Thus, ostrich meat may be a good source of heme iron and can be used as a supplement in diet of individuals with iron deficiencies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to estimate the influence of the different levels of Cu, Zn, and Mn nanoparticles provided in the diet on the activity of glycosidases in turkey meat. An experiment was carried out on 144 Hybrid Converter turkey hens. The birds were divided into groups fed with the standard- and nanoparticle-supplementation of different levels of copper (Cu 20, 10, 2 mg/kg), zinc (Zn 100, 50, 10 ppm), and manganese (Mn 100, 50, 10 ppm), covering respectively 100, 50, and 10% of the physiological demands for those minerals in the diet. The largest changes in glycosidases activity in both the breast and thigh muscles were found after the use of 10% Zn and Cu additive in the form of nanoparticles. The use of a 10% dose of Mn nanoparticles in turkey feeding caused the inhibition of glycosidase activity in the breast muscle. Changes in glycosidase activity in the turkey hens' thigh and breast muscle after supplementation of Zn, Cu and Mn as nanoparticles can be an indicator of muscle metabolism levels. Comparative oncology represents an important tool in cancer research and drug development. After the sequencing of the canine genome, many similarities between canine and human tumors have been noticed in what concerns physiological and pathological conditions, including tumorigenesis and many clinical aspects. Breast cancer is a complex and heterogeneous group of mammary neoplastic diseases, thus, it is important to find suitable animal models for new biomarker discovery and therapeutic strategies. From histopathological to molecular level, many similarities between canine and human breast cancers show that dogs can be reliable models for this pathology, and can improve the therapeutic options. In this review, we synthesized the most recent studies that demonstrate the homologies between dogs and humans in terms of mammary cancer development and progression.
