Simple Summary: In the sorting process of Chinese softshell turtles, it is necessary to classify them based on their weight and accurately identify their plastron and carapace. By applying multiple linear regression analysis for modeling, the relationship between the weight and morphological parameters of Chinese softshell turtles is obtained, which can be used to estimate the weight of turtles well. An improved deep learning object detection network is used to extract the features of the plastron and carapace of the Chinese softshell turtles, achieving excellent detection results. In order to accommodate different computing power in different scenarios, this paper proposes a dual-ended adaptive federated learning framework; in order to adapt to low computing power scenarios, this paper performs lightweighting operations on the mainstream model; and in order to verify the effectiveness of the model, this paper conducts a number of targeted experiments. Compared with AlexNet, VGG, ResNet and GoogLeNet, this model improves the classification accuracy to 96.1%, which is 14.4% better than the baseline model and improves the Recall and Precision by 14.8% and 14.2%, respectively. In addition, by lightening the network, our methods reduce the inference latency and transmission latency by 24.4 ms and 10.5 ms, respectively. Simple Summary: Welfare farming of pigs is a kind of farming method that pays attention to the welfare of animals, which is of great significance to the health and production performance of pigs. The estimation of pig weight based on computer vision can avoid direct contact with pigs, reduce the loss caused by contact or pressure, and ultimately improve the overall breeding efficiency and economic benefits. In this paper, we proposed a new pig weight estimation method based on Mask R-CNN and machine learning methods. Our new method extracted features from a new perspective to solve the problem of illumination and body bending.The experimental results show that our method can accurately predict the weight of pigs. Using computer vision technology to estimate pig live weight is an important method to realize pig welfare. But there are two key issues that affect pigs' weight estimation: one is the uneven illumination, which leads to unclear contour extraction of pigs, and the other is the bending of the pig body, which leads to incorrect pig body information. For the first one, Mask R-CNN was used to extract the contour of the pig, and the obtained mask image was converted into a binary image from which we were able to obtain a more accurate contour image. For the second one, the body length, hip width and the distance from the camera to the pig back were corrected by XGBoost and actual measured information. Then we analyzed the rationality of the extracted features. Three feature combination strategies were used to predict pig weight. In total, 1505 back images of 39 pigs obtained using Azure kinect DK were used in the numerical experiments. The highest prediction accuracy is XGBoost, with an MAE of 0.389, RMSE of 0.576, MAPE of 0.318% and R 2 of 0.995. We also recommend using the Mask R-CNN + RFR method because it has fairly high precision in each strategy. To address this issue, we have made improvements and optimizations based on the Retinaface face recognition model to create a balanced speed-accuracy sheep face recognition model. The optimized model has fewer parameters, simpler computations, faster inference speeds, and higher recognition accuracy, making it well-suited for deployment on resource-constrained edge devices. Therefore, this paper proposes an efficient and fast basic module called Eblock and uses it to build a lightweight sheep face recognition model called SheepFaceNet, which achieves the best balance between speed and accuracy. SheepFaceNet includes two modules: SheepFaceNetDet for detection and SheepFaceNetRec for recognition. SheepFaceNetDet uses Eblock to construct the backbone network to enhance feature extraction capability and efficiency, designs a bidirectional FPN layer (BiFPN) to enhance geometric location ability, and optimizes the network structure, which affects inference speed, to achieve fast and accurate sheep face detection. SheepFaceNetRec uses Eblock to construct the feature extraction network, uses ECA channel attention to improve the effectiveness of feature extraction, and uses multi-scale feature fusion to achieve fast and accurate sheep face recognition. On our self-built sheep face dataset, SheepFaceNet recognized 387 sheep face images per second with an accuracy rate of 97.75%, achieving an advanced balance between speed and accuracy. Simple Summary: Knowing the species and numbers of birds in nature reserves is essential to achieving the goals of bird conservation. However, it still relies on inefficient and inaccurate manual monitoring methods, such as point counts conducted by researchers and ornithologists in the field. To address this difficulty, this paper explores the feasibility of using computer vision technology for wetland bird monitoring. To this end, we build a dataset of manually labeled wetland birds for species detection and implement taxonomic counts of ten wetland bird species using a deep neural network model with multiple improvements. This tool can improve the accuracy and efficiency of monitoring, providing more precise data for scientists, policymakers, and nature reserve managers to take targeted conservation measures in protecting endangered birds and maintaining ecological balance. The algorithm performance evaluation demonstrates that the artificial intelligence method proposed in this paper is a feasible and efficient method for bird monitoring, opening up a new perspective for bird conservation and serving as a reference for the conservation of other animals. To protect birds, it is crucial to identify their species and determine their population across different regions. In this paper, we propose an efficient method for wetland bird monitoring based on object detection and multi-object tracking networks. First, we construct a manually annotated dataset for bird species detection, annotating the entire body and head of each bird separately, comprising 3737 bird images. We also built a new dataset containing 11,139 complete, individual bird images for the multi-object tracking task. Second, we perform comparative experiments using a state-of-the-art batch of object detection networks, and the results demonstrated that the YOLOv7 network, trained with a dataset labeling the entire body of the bird, was the most effective method. To enhance YOLOv7 performance, we added three GAM modules on the head side of the YOLOv7 to minimize information diffusion and amplify global interaction representations and utilized Alpha-IoU loss to achieve more accurate bounding box regression. The experimental results revealed that the improved method offers greater accuracy, with mAP@0.5 improving to 0.951 and mAP@0.5:0.95 improving to 0.815. Then, we send the detection information to DeepSORT for bird tracking and classification counting. Finally, we use the area counting method to count according to the species of birds to obtain information about flock distribution. Simple Summary: Constructing a contactless pig mass estimation method through computer vision technology can help us to adjust our pig breeding program to improve production efficiency. Due to the complexity of the actual production environment, there are few reports on pig mass estimation in an unconstrained environment. In this study, we constructed a pig mass estimate model based on deep learning without constraint. The experimental results proved that the pig body mass estimation model constructed in this paper can quickly and accurately obtain the body mass of pigs. Lately, contactless pig body mass estimation methods based on computer vision technology have gained attention thanks to their potential to improve animal welfare and ensure breeders' safety. Nonetheless, current methods require pigs to be restrained in a confinement pen, and no study has been conducted in an unconstrained environment. In this study, we develop a pig mass estimation model based on deep learning, capable of estimating body mass without constraints. Our model comprises a Mask R-CNN-based pig instance segmentation algorithm, a Keypoint R-CNN-based pig keypoint detection algorithm and an improved ResNet-based pig mass estimation algorithm that includes multi-branch convolution, depthwise convolution, and an inverted bottleneck to improve accuracy. We constructed a dataset for this study using images and body mass data from 117 pigs. Simple Summary: The aim of this study was to improve the hatching efficiency of duck eggs by automatically assessing the hatching characteristics of early hatching eggs. The timely and accurate detection of fertile and infertile eggs is an important research topic in the breeder egg hatching industry. Detecting infertile eggs early in the hatching process not only improves the hatching efficiency of duck eggs, but also brings benefits to hatching companies. In recent years, the rapid development of deep learning and computer vision technology has brought us new ideas. We propose a lightweight multi-target detection method based on deep learning to evaluate the hatching characteristics of duck eggs. The results show that the method could meet the requirements for accuracy and real-time detection in industrial production. Since it is difficult to accurately identify the fertilization and infertility status of multiple duck eggs on an incubation tray, and due to the lack of easy-to-deploy detection models, a novel lightweight detection architecture (LDA) based on the YOLOX-Tiny framework is proposed in this paper to identify sterile duck eggs with the aim of reducing model deployment requirements and improving detection accuracy. Specifically, the method acquires duck egg images through an acquisition device and augments the dataset using rotation, symmetry, and contrast enhancement methods. Then, the traditional convolution is replaced by a depth-wise separable convolution with a smaller number of parameters, while a new CSP structure and backbone network structure are used to reduce the number of parameters of the model. Finally, to improve the accuracy of the network, the method includes an attention mechanism after the backbone network and uses the cosine annealing algorithm in training. An experiment was conducted on 2111 duck eggs, and 6488 duck egg images were obtained after data augmentation. In the test set of 326 duck egg images, the mean average precision (mAP) of the method in this paper was 99.74%, which was better than the 94.92% of the YOLOX-Tiny network before improvement, and better than the reported prediction accuracy of 92.06%. The number of model parameters was only 1.93 M, which was better than the 5.03 M of the YOLOX-Tiny network. Further, by analyzing the concurrent detection of single 3 × 5, 5 × 7 and 7 × 9 grids, the algorithm achieved a single detection number of 7 × 9 = 63 eggs. The method proposed in this paper significantly improves the efficiency and detection accuracy of single-step detection of breeder duck eggs, reduces the network size, and provides a suitable method for identifying sterile duck eggs on hatching egg trays. Simple Summary: In the broiler farming industry, accurately weighing broilers is essential. Camera-based weighing systems offer a solution without requiring expensive platform weighers. However, existing computer vision methods for estimating broiler weight are limited to young broilers and become less accurate as broilers age due to increased density and weight imbalance. To tackle this, a new approach is introduced in this paper. It uses a segmentation network (Mask R-CNN) with depth images captured by a 3D camera to isolate broilers. Artificial and learned features are combined using a feature fusion module, and these features are used to estimate broiler weight through gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT). The method excels in accurately estimating the weight of individual broilers within complex scenes and holds promise for enhancing broiler weight estimation methods. Broiler weighing is essential in the broiler farming industry. Camera-based systems can economically weigh various broiler types without expensive platforms. However, existing computer vision methods for weight estimation are less mature, as they focus on young broilers. In effect, the estimation error increases with the age of the broiler. To tackle this, this paper presents a novel framework. First, it employs Mask R-CNN for instance segmentation of depth images captured by 3D cameras. Next, once the images of either a single broiler or multiple broilers are segmented, the extended artificial features and the learned features extracted by Customized Resnet50 (C-Resnet50) are fused by a feature fusion module. Finally, the fused features are adopted to estimate the body weight of each broiler employing gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT). By integrating diverse features with GBTD, the proposed framework can effectively obtain the broiler instance among many depth images of multiple broilers in the visual field despite the complex background. Experimental results show that this framework significantly boosts accuracy and robustness. Simple Summary: Farm animal welfare research conducted in China is relatively less accessed and unknown outside of the country, which might create the impression that farm animal welfare receives limited attention in China. This paper aims to offer a comprehensive review of the existing Chinese farm animal welfare literature. CiteSpace software was employed for the analysis and visualization of various aspects of the literature, including the quantity, species, authors, institutions, journals, and keywords. This process helped reveal the research trends, hotspots, and frontiers in the field. The findings from this bibliometric analysis strongly indicate that farm animal welfare is a subject of considerable interest and research activity in China. Farm animal welfare research conducted in China is not commonly accessed or known outside of China, which may lead to the assumption that farm animal welfare receives relatively little attention in China. Therefore, a bibliometric analysis was conducted on the existing Chinese farm animal welfare literature to provide robust evidence to refute this assumption. A total of 1312 peer-reviewed Chinese studies on farm animal welfare published between March 1992 and June 2023 were retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database. CiteSpace software was used to analyze and visualize the number, species, authors, institutions, journals, and keywords of the papers. In China, farm animal welfare research has gone through the processes of an early stage (1992–2001), rapid-growth stage (2002–2007), and mature stage (2008–present), and the scale of research continues to grow. Notably, swine and chickens have received priority attention in this area. A Matthew effect was observed for authors and institutions, with relatively little collaboration among authors and institutions. Most of the papers were published in a small number of journals, with an apparent agglomeration characteristic. The research hotspots, summarized as "feed and diet", "environmental impacts and control", "integrated rearing management", "injury and disease", "behavior and technologies for behavior monitoring", "genetic analysis", "welfare during transport and slaughter", "welfare-friendly animal product consumption", "attitudes toward farm animal welfare", and "healthy breeding". The keywords "computer vision", "recognition", "temperature", "precision livestock farming", "laying hen", and "behavior", represent the major research frontiers in the field, which could indicate potential areas of significant future research. The findings of the present bibliometric analysis confirm the fact that farm animal welfare is a field of interest in China. The real-time and accurate monitoring of their different behaviors and poses is significant. Simple Summary: Poultry farming is an important part of China's agriculture system. The automatic estimation of poultry posture can help to analyze the movement, behavior, and even health of poultry. In this study, a poultry pose-estimation system was designed, which realized the automatic pose estimation of a single broiler chicken using a multi-part detection method. Due to the high overlap and irregular contours of sheep, it poses a challenge to computer vision tasks. To improve the accuracy of extracting individual sheep locations and contours in the case of multiple sheep overlap, this paper proposed two-stage sheep instance segmentation SheepInst based on the Mask R-CNN framework, more specifically, RefineMask. Firstly, an improved backbone network ConvNeXt-E was proposed to extract sheep features. Secondly, we improved the structure of the two-stage object detector Dynamic R-CNN to precisely locate highly overlapping sheep. Finally, we enhanced the segmentation network of RefineMask by adding spatial attention modules to accurately segment irregular contours of sheep. SheepInst achieves 89.1%, 91.3%, and 79.5% in box AP, mask AP, and boundary AP metric on the test set, respectively. To achieve rapid and precise target counting, the quality of target detection serves as a pivotal factor. This study introduces the Sheep's Head-Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SH-SSD) as a solution. Within the network's backbone, the Triple Attention mechanism is incorporated to enhance the MobileNetV3 backbone, resulting in a significant reduction in network parameters and an improvement in detection speed. The network's neck is constructed using a combination of the Spatial Pyramid Pooling module and the Triple Attention Bottleneck module. This combination enhances the extraction of semantic information and the preservation of detailed feature map information, with a slight increase in network parameters. Simple Summary: Pig counting is important work in the breeding process of large-scale pig farms. Currently, animal counting is mainly observed manually, which leads to increased labor costs and is also prone to animal stress. The noncontact computer vision method avoids the above problems. Therefore, we propose a method for pig counting using machine vision technology. Meanwhile, a pig counting application for the Android system was developed, which truly realized the practical application of the technology. Pig counting is an important work in the breeding process of large-scale pig farms. In order to achieve high-precision pig identification in the conditions of pigs occluding each other, illumination difference, multiscenes, and differences in the number of pigs and the imaging size, and to also reduce the number of parameters of the model, a pig counting algorithm of improved YOLOv5n was proposed. We established the world's first manually marked sex classification dataset for hemp ducks, including 1663 images of duck groups; 17,090 images of whole, individual duck bodies; and 15,797 images of individual duck heads, which were manually captured and had sex information markers. Additionally, we used multiple deep neural network models for the target detection and sex classification of ducks. First, we constructed a new dataset of video images of goats for the object tracking task. Then, we took YOLOv5 as the baseline of the object detector and improved it using a series of advanced methods, including: using RandAugment to explore suitable data augmentation strategies in a real goat barn environment, using AF-FPN to improve the network's ability to represent multi-scale objects, and using the Dynamic Head framework to unify the attention mechanism with the detector's heads to improve its performance. In the first part of this study, a method was developed to calculate the camera coverage in a 3D farm environment, and in the next stage, a genetic algorithm-based model was designed for finding optimal placements of a multi-camera and multi-pen setup. The algorithm's objective was to maximize the multi-camera coverage while minimizing budget. Two different optimization methods involving multiple cameras and pen combinations were used. This study focused on the overturned and dead status of cage-reared ducks using YOLOv8 as the basic network. By introducing GAM and Wise-IoU loss functions, we proposed an abnormal-situation recognition method for cage-reared ducks based on YOLOv8-ACRD. Building on this, we refined the identification of key body parts of cage-reared ducks, focusing on six key points: head, beak, chest, tail, left foot, and right foot. This resulted in the development of an abnormal posture estimation model for cage-reared ducks, based on HRNet-48. Furthermore, through multiple tests and comparative verification experiments, it was confirmed that the proposed method exhibited high detection accuracy, generalization ability, and robust comprehensive performance. The method proposed in this study for perceiving abnormal situations in cage-reared ducks not only provides foundational information for the progress and improvement of the meat duck cage-reared system but also offers technological references for the intelligent breeding of other cage-reared poultry. Overturning and death are common abnormalities in cage-reared ducks. To achieve timely and accurate detection, this study focused on 10-day-old cage-reared ducks, which are prone to these conditions, and established prior data on such situations. Using the original YOLOv8 as the base network, multiple GAM attention mechanisms were embedded into the feature fusion part (neck) to enhance the network's focus on the abnormal regions in images of cage-reared ducks. Additionally, the Wise-IoU loss function replaced the CIoU loss function by employing a dynamic non-monotonic focusing mechanism to balance the data samples and mitigate excessive penalties from geometric parameters in the model. The image brightness was adjusted by factors of 0.85 and 1.25, and mainstream object-detection algorithms were adopted to test and compare the generalization and performance of the proposed method. YOLOv8n was trained to detect standing and lying calves. Daily behavioural budget was then summarised and analysed based on automatic inference on untrained data. The results show a mean average precision of 0.995 and an average inference speed of 333 frames per second. The maximum error in the estimated daily standing and lying time for a total of 8 calf-days is less than 14 min. Calves with diarrhoea had about 2 h more daily lying time (p < 0.002), 2.65 more daily lying bouts (p < 0.049), and 4.3 min less daily lying bout duration (p = 0.5) compared to healthy calves. Specifically, the Bottleneck in the C2f module of the YOLOv8n backbone network and neck network are replaced with Fasternet-EMA Block and Fasternet Block, respectively. The Fasternet Block is designed based on PConv (Partial Convolution) to reduce model parameter count and computational load efficiently. Furthermore, the incorporation of the EMA (Efficient Multi-scale Attention) mechanism helps mitigate interference from complex environments on pigeon-egg feature-extraction capabilities. Additionally, Dysample, an ultra-lightweight and effective upsampler, is introduced into the neck network to further enhance performance with lower computational overhead. Finally, the EXPMA (exponential moving average) concept is employed to optimize the SlideLoss and propose the EMASlideLoss classification loss function, addressing the issue of imbalanced data samples and enhancing the model's robustness. The experimental results showed that the F1-score, mAP50-95, and mAP75 of YOLOv8-PG increased by 0.76%, 1.56%, and 4.45%, respectively, compared with the baseline YOLOv8n model. Moreover, the model's parameter count and computational load are reduced by 24.69% and 22.89%, respectively. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of computer vision techniques in detecting and determining the size of shoulder lesions. A Microsoft Kinect V2 camera captured the top-down depth and RGB images of sows in farrowing crates. The RGB images were collected at a resolution of 1920 × 1080. To ensure the best view of the lesions, images were selected with sows lying on their right and left sides with all legs extended. A total of 824 RGB images from 70 sows with lesions at various stages of development were identified and annotated. Three deep learning-based object detection models, YOLOv5, YOLOv8, and Faster-RCNN, pre-trained with the COCO and ImageNet datasets, were implemented to localize the lesion area. YOLOv5 was the best predictor as it was able to detect lesions with an mAP@0.5 of 0.92. To estimate the lesion area, lesion pixel segmentation was carried out on the localized region using traditional image processing techniques like Otsu's binarization and adaptive thresholding alongside DL-based segmentation models based on U-Net architecture. This method is applied to assess duck activeness under different photoperiods, and the experimental results are analyzed to determine the most suitable lighting cycle for duck farming, demonstrating the superiority of the model. To clarify the impact of the photoperiod on group-raised duck activeness and quantify duck activeness, this study proposes a method that employs a multi-object tracking model to calculate group-raised duck activeness. Then, duck farming experiments were designed with varying photoperiods as gradients to assess this impact. The constructed multi-object tracking model for group-raised ducks was based on YOLOv8. The C2f-Faster-EMA module, which combines C2f-Faster with the EMA attention mechanism, was used to improve the object recognition performance of YOLOv8. Furthermore, an analysis of the tracking performance of Bot-SORT, ByteTrack, and DeepSORT algorithms on small-sized duck targets was conducted. Building upon this foundation, the duck instances in the images were segmented to calculate the distance traveled by individual ducks, while the centroid of the duck mask was used in place of the mask regression box's center point. The single-frame average displacement of group-raised ducks was utilized as an intuitive indicator of their activeness. Farming experiments were conducted with varying photoperiods (24L:0D, 16L:8D, and 12L:12D), and the constructed model was used to calculate the activeness of group-raised ducks. To address this problem, we proposed an efficient method that utilizes the temporal shift module (TSM) for automatic recognition of pig aggression. In general, TSM is inserted into four 2D convolutional neural network models, including ResNet50, ResNeXt50, DenseNet201, and ConvNext-t, enabling the models to process both spatial and temporal features without increasing the model parameters and computational complexity. The proposed method was evaluated on the dataset established in this study, and the results indicate that the ResNeXt50-T (TSM inserted into ResNeXt50) model achieved the best balance between recognition accuracy and model parameters. On the test set, the ResNeXt50-T model achieved accuracy, recall, precision, F1 score, speed, and model parameters of 95.69%, 95.25%, 96.07%, 95.65%, 29 ms, and 22.98 M, respectively. These results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the accuracy of recognizing pig aggressive behavior and provide a reference for behavior recognition in actual scenarios of smart livestock farming. In this study, we built a lightweight sheep face recognition model using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to face the challenges in sheep identity recognition. The model not only achieved high accuracy in recognition tasks but also was friendly for edge devices. The research results indicate that the proposed recognition model can identify sheep accurately and can be further deployed on the mobile end. The accurate identification of sheep is crucial for breeding, behavioral research, food quality tracking, and disease prevention on modern farms. As a result of the time-consuming, expensive, and unreliable problems of traditional sheep-identification methods, relevant studies have built sheep face recognition models to recognize sheep through facial images. However, the existing sheep face recognition models face problems such as high computational costs, large model sizes, and weak practicality. In response to the above issues, this study proposes a lightweight sheep face recognition model named LSR-YOLO. Specifically, the ShuffleNetv2 module and Ghost module were used to replace the feature extraction module in the backbone and neck of YOLOv5s to reduce floating-point operations per second (FLOPs) and parameters. In addition, the coordinated attention (CA) module was introduced into the backbone to suppress non-critical information and improve the feature extraction ability of the recognition model. We collected facial images of 63 small-tailed Han sheep to construct a sheep face dataset and further evaluate the proposed method. Compared to YOLOv5s, the FLOPs and parameters of LSR-YOLO decreased by 25.5% and 33.4%, respectively. LSR-YOLO achieved the best performance on the sheep face dataset, and the mAP@0.5 reached 97.8% when the model size was only 9.5 MB. The experimental results show that LSR-YOLO has significant advantages in recognition accuracy and model size. Finally, we integrated LSR-YOLO into mobile devices and further developed a recognition system to achieve real-time recognition. At the Department of Biology and The Ingram School of Engineering at Texas State University and Texas A&M University, we collaborated on a camera trap project to monitor species from images in Texas, USA. We developed a framework to analyze the acquired images using artificial intelligence-driven technology and computer vision methods. The project aims to classify three broad groups of herpetofaunal species (i.e., toads/frogs, lizards, and snakes) from camera trap images with deep learning architectures. The experiment includes balancing the imbalanced dataset, investigating several image preprocessing techniques, and augmentation procedures. The classification results present tremendous prospects for automated species identification from challenging biological image data. The research outcome is essential to the academic community and wildlife researchers for conservation and monitoring purpose. Accurate identification of animal species is necessary to understand biodiversity richness, monitor endangered species, and study the impact of climate change on species distribution within a specific region. Camera traps represent a passive monitoring technique that generates millions of ecological images. The vast numbers of images drive automated ecological analysis as essential, given that manual assessment of large datasets is laborious, time-consuming, and expensive. Deep learning networks have been advanced in the last few years to solve object and species identification tasks in the computer vision domain, providing state-of-the-art results. In our work, we trained and tested machine learning models to classify three animal groups (snakes, lizards, and toads) from camera trap images. We experimented with two pretrained models, VGG16 and ResNet50, and a self-trained convolutional neural network (CNN-1) with varying CNN layers and augmentation parameters. For multiclassification, CNN-1 achieved 72% accuracy, whereas VGG16 reached 87%, and ResNet50 attained 86% accuracy. Simple Summary: Lameness, an alteration of the gait due to pain or dysfunction of the locomotor system, is the most common disease symptom in horses. Yet, it is difficult for veterinarians to correctly assess by visual inspection. Objective tools that can aid clinical decision making and provide early disease detection through sensitive lameness measurements are needed. In this study, we describe how an AI-powered measurement tool on a smartphone can detect lameness in horses without the need to mount equipment on the horse. We compare it to a state-of-the-art multi-camera motion capture system by simultaneous, synchronised recordings from both systems. Therefore, we conclude that the smartphone measurement tool can detect lameness at relevant levels with easy-of-use for the veterinarian. Computer vision is a subcategory of artificial intelligence focused on extraction of information from images and video. It provides a compelling new means for objective orthopaedic gait assessment in horses using accessible hardware, such as a smartphone, for markerless motion analysis. This study aimed to explore the lameness assessment capacity of a smartphone single camera (SC) markerless computer vision application by comparing measurements of the vertical motion of the head and pelvis to an optical motion capture multi-camera (MC) system using skin attached reflective markers. Twenty-five horses were recorded with a smartphone (60 Hz) and a 13 camera MC-system (200 Hz) while trotting two times back and forth on a 30 m runway. The smartphone video was processed using artificial neural networks detecting the horse's direction, action and motion of body segments. After filtering, the vertical displacement curves from the head and pelvis were synchronised between systems using cross-correlation. This rendered 655 and 404 matching stride segmented curves for the head and pelvis respectively. From the stride segmented vertical displacement signals, differences between the two minima (MinDiff) and the two maxima (MaxDiff) respectively per stride were compared between the systems. Trial mean difference between systems was 2.2 mm (range 0.0–8.7 mm) for head and 2.2 mm (range 0.0–6.5 mm) for pelvis. Within-trial standard deviations ranged between 3.1–28.1 mm for MC and between 3.6–26.2 mm for SC. The ease of use and good agreement with MC indicate that the SC application is a promising tool for detecting clinically relevant levels of asymmetry in horses, enabling frequent and convenient gait monitoring over time. Based on a computational analysis of behavioral consultations of 12 dogs medically treated due to ADHD-like behavior and of a control group of 12 dogs with no reported behavioral problems, we identify three dimensions of characteristic movement patterns of dogs with ADHD-like behaviors, which are detectable during consultation. These include (i) high speed of movement, (ii) large coverage of room space, and (iii) frequent re-orientation in room space. These patterns can form the basis for computational methods for objective assessment of dogs with ADHD-like behavior that could help for diagnosis and clinical treatment of the disorder. Computational approaches were called for to address the challenges of more objective behavior assessment which would be less reliant on owner reports. This study aims to use computational analysis for investigating a hypothesis that dogs with ADHD-like (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) behavior exhibit characteristic movement patterns directly observable during veterinary consultation. Simple Summary: Radiographic diagnosis is essential for the genetic control of canine hip dysplasia (HD). The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) scoring HD scheme is based on objective and qualitative radiographic criteria. Subjective interpretations can lead to errors in diagnosis and, consequently, to incorrect selective breeding, which in turn impacts the gene pool of dog breeds. The aim of this study was to use a computer method to calculate the Hip Congruency Index (HCI) to objectively estimate radiographic hip congruency for future application in the development of computer vision models capable of classifying canine HD. The HCI measures the percentage of acetabular coverage that is occupied by the femoral head. Normal hips are associated with an even, parallel joint surface that translates into reduced acetabular free space, which increases with hip subluxation and becomes maximal in hip dislocation. We found statistically significant differences in mean HCI values among all five FCI categories. These results demonstrate that the HCI reliably reflects the different degrees of congruency associated with HD. Therefore, it is expected that when used in conjunction with other HD evaluation parameters, such as Norberg angle and assessment of osteoarthritic signs, it can improve the diagnosis by making it more accurate and unequivocal. Accurate radiographic screening evaluation is essential in the genetic control of canine HD, however, the qualitative assessment of hip congruency introduces some subjectivity, leading to excessive variability in scoring. The main objective of this work was to validate a method-Hip Congruency Index (HCI)-capable of objectively measuring the relationship between the acetabulum and the femoral head and associating it with the level of congruency proposed by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), with the aim of incorporating it into a computer vision model that classifies HD autonomously. A total of 200 dogs (400 hips) were randomly selected for the study. All radiographs were scored in five categories by an experienced examiner according to FCI criteria. Two examiners performed HCI measurements on 25 hip radiographs to study intra- and inter-examiner reliability and agreement. Additionally, each examiner measured HCI on their half of the study sample (100 dogs), and the results were compared between FCI categories. The paired t-test and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) showed no evidence of a systematic bias, and there was excellent reliability between the measurements of the two examiners and examiners' sessions. Hips that were assigned an FCI grade of A (n = 120), B (n = 157), C (n = 68), D (n = 38) and E (n = 17) had a mean HCI of 0.739 ± 0.044, 0.666 ± 0.052, 0.605 ± 0.055, 0.494 ± 0.070 and 0.374 ± 0.122, respectively (ANOVA, p < 0.01). Therefore, these results show that HCI is a parameter capable of estimating hip congruency and has the potential to enrich conventional HD scoring criteria if incorporated into an artificial intelligence algorithm competent in diagnosing HD. One-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD analyses were conducted using JMP software (JMP Pro 16 for Mac, SAS Institute, Cary, North Caronia) to determine whether there are significant differences between the predicted number of hens and the actual number of hens under various situations (i.e., age, light intensity, and observational angles). The difference was considered significant at p < 0.05. Our results show that the evaluation metrics (Precision, Recall, F1 and mAP@0.5) of the YOLOv5x-hens model were 0.96, 0.96, 0.96 and 0.95, respectively, in detecting hens on the litter floor. The newly developed YOLOv5x-hens was tested with stable performances in detecting birds under different lighting intensities, angles, and ages over 8 weeks (i.e., birds were 8–16 weeks old). For instance, the model was tested with 95% accuracy after the birds were 8 weeks old. This helps to achieve high productivity and precise management in precision agriculture. Here, we demonstrate that sheep faces can be recognized based on the YOLOv3 target detection network. A model compression method based on K-means clustering algorithm and combined with channel pruning and layer pruning is applied to individual sheep identification. In addition, the results show that the proposed non-contact sheep face recognition method can identify sheep quickly and accurately. Accurate identification of sheep is important for achieving precise animal management and welfare farming in large farms. In this study, a sheep face detection method based on YOLOv3 model pruning is proposed, abbreviated as YOLOv3-P in the text. The method is used to identify sheep in pastures, reduce stress and achieve welfare farming. Specifically, in this study, we chose to collect Sunit sheep face images from a certain pasture in Xilin Gol League Sunit Right Banner, Inner Mongolia, and used YOLOv3, YOLOv4, Faster R-CNN, SSD and other classical target recognition algorithms to train and compare the recognition results, respectively. Ultimately, the choice was made to optimize YOLOv3. The mAP was increased from 95.3% to 96.4% by clustering the anchor frames in YOLOv3 using the sheep face dataset. The mAP of the compressed model was also increased from 96.4% to 97.2%. The model size was also reduced to 1/4 times the size of the original model. In addition, we restructured the original dataset and performed a 10-fold cross-validation experiment with a value of 96.84% for mAP. The results show that clustering the anchor boxes and compressing the model using this dataset is an effective method for identifying sheep. The method is characterized by low memory requirement, high-recognition accuracy and fast recognition speed, which can accurately identify sheep and has important applications in precision animal management and welfare farming. Simple Summary: The ability to identify individual animals has gained great interest in beef feedlots to allow for animal tracking and all applications for precision management of individuals. This study assessed the feasibility and performance of a total of 59 deep learning models in identifying individual cattle with muzzle images. Animal biometric solutions, e.g., identifying cattle muzzle patterns (unique features comparable to human fingerprints), may offer noninvasive and unique methods for cattle identification and tracking, but need validation with advancement in machine learning modeling. The objectives of this research were to (1) collect and publish a high-quality dataset for beef cattle muzzle images, and (2) evaluate and benchmark the performance of recognizing individual beef cattle with a variety of deep learning models. A total of 4923 muzzle images for 268 US feedlot finishing cattle (>12 images per animal on average) were taken with a mirrorless digital camera and processed to form the dataset. A total of 59 deep learning image classification models were comparatively evaluated for identifying individual cattle. The best accuracy for identifying the 268 cattle was 98.7%, and the fastest processing speed was 28.3 ms/image. Weighted cross-entropy loss function and data augmentation can increase the identification accuracy of individual cattle with fewer muzzle images for model development. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the great potential of deep learning applications for individual cattle identification and is favorable for precision livestock management. Simple Summary: This study explored an image-based method for recognizing pigs' postures during growth and established the world's first human-annotated pig-posture-recognition dataset, which includes pigs standing, lying, lying on their sides, and exploring (the four common postures). The latter plays a particular role in animal experiments, where continuous monitoring is essential for animal welfare. In this study, we focus on red foxes in an experimental setting and study their behavior. Although animal behavior is a complex concept, it can be described as a combination of body posture and activity. To measure body posture and activity, video monitoring can be used as a non-invasive and cost-efficient tool. While it is possible to analyze the video data resulting from the experiment manually, this method is time consuming and costly. We therefore use computer vision to detect and track the animals over several days. The detector is based on a neural network architecture. It is trained to detect red foxes and their body postures, i.e., 'lying', 'sitting', and 'standing'. The trained algorithm has a mean average precision of 99.91%. The combination of activity and posture results in nearly continuous monitoring of animal behavior. Furthermore, the detector is suitable for real-time evaluation. Information about crustacean behavior is important in this respect. Manual methods of detecting crustacean behavior are usually infectible, time-consuming, and imprecise. Therefore, automatic growth situation monitoring according to changes in behavior has gained more attention, including acoustic technology, machine vision, and sensors. This article reviews the development of these automatic behavior monitoring methods over the past three decades and summarizes their domains of application, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, the challenges of individual sensitivity and aquaculture environment for future research on the behavior of crustaceans are also highlighted. Studies show that feeding behavior, movement rhythms, and reproduction behavior are the three most important behaviors of crustaceans, and the applications of information technology such as advanced machine vision technology have great significance to accelerate the development of new means and techniques for more effective automatic monitoring. However, the accuracy and intelligence still need to be improved to meet intensive aquaculture requirements. Simple Summary: Breathing patterns are commonly used to assess cattle health and welfare parameters such as stress, pain, and disease. Infrared thermography has recently been accepted as a non-invasive tool for breathing pattern measurement. In this study, we applied a computer vision method (Mask R-CNN) to infrared thermography and made it possible to automatically estimate the breathing pattern in cattle. Breathing patterns identified by computer vision were highly correlated with those measured through thermal image observation. As this method is not labor-intensive and can handle numerable big data, it might be possible to analyze breathing patterns from various angles in the future. Breathing patterns can be considered a vital sign providing health information. Infrared thermography is used to evaluate breathing patterns because it is non-invasive. Our study used not only sequence temperature data but also RGB images to gain breathing patterns in cattle. Mask R-CNN was used to detect the ROI (region of interest, nose) in the cattle RGB images. Mask segmentation from the ROI detection was applied to the corresponding temperature data. Finally, to visualize the breathing pattern, we calculated the temperature values in the ROI by averaging all temperature values in the ROI. The results in this study show 76% accuracy with Mask R-CNN in detecting cattle noses. With respect to the temperature calculation methods, the averaging method showed the most appropriate breathing pattern compared to other methods (maximum temperature in the ROI and integrating all temperature values in the ROI). Finally, we compared the breathing pattern from the averaging method and that from the thermal image observation and found them to be highly correlated (R2 = 0.91). This method is not labor-intensive, can handle big data, and is accurate. Simple Summary: To detect changes in migrating bird populations that are usually gradual, regular counts of the flocks should be carried out. This is vital for giving more precise management decisions and taking preventive actions when necessary. Traditional counting methods are widely used. However, these methods can be expensive, time-consuming, and highly dependent on the mental and physical status of the observer and environmental factors. Taking these uncertainties into account, we aimed at taking the advantage of the advances in the artificial intelligence (AI) field for a more standardized counting action. The study has been practically initiated 10 years ago by beginning to take photos on a yearly basis in predefined regions of Turkey. After a large collection of bird photos had been gathered, we predicted the bird counts in photo locations from images by making strong use of AI. Finally, we used these counts to produce several bird distribution maps for further analysis. Our results showed the potential of learning computers in support of real-world bird monitoring applications. A challenging problem in the field of avian ecology is deriving information on bird population movement trends. This necessitates the regular counting of birds which is usually not an easily-achievable task. A promising attempt towards solving the bird counting problem in a more consistent and fast way is to predict the number of birds in different regions from their photos. For this purpose, we exploit the ability of computers to learn from past data through deep learning which has been a leading sub-field of AI for image understanding. Our data source is a collection of on-ground photos taken during our long run of birding activity. We employ several state-of-the-art generic object-detection algorithms to learn to detect birds, each being a member of one of the 38 identified species, in natural scenes. The experiments revealed that computer-aided counting outperformed the manual counting with respect to both accuracy and time. As a real-world application of image-based bird counting, we prepared the spatial bird order distribution and species diversity maps of Turkey by utilizing the geographic information system (GIS) technology. In this proposed study, a new deep learning method (i.e., an integration of background-subtraction and inter-frame difference) was developed for automatically recognizing dairy calf scene-interactive behaviors (e.g., entering or leaving the resting area, and stationary and turning behaviors in the inlet and outlet area of the resting area) based on computer vision-based technology. Results show that the recognition success rates for the calf's science-interactive behaviors of pen entering, pen leaving, staying (standing or laying static behavior), and turning were 94.38%, 92.86%, 96.85%, and 93.51%, respectively. The recognition success rates for feeding and drinking were 79.69% and 81.73%, respectively.
