- Abstract
SummaryThe Hylaeus gibbusspecies-group is a notoriously difficult group, whose nomenclature is currently confusing. To clarify the taxonomy of this species group, the most problematic types of the gibbusspecies-group were examined. The identity of Hylaeus pictus(Smith, 1853) is unclear. The results suggest that two species are grouped under this name in Western Europe and in North Africa: H. pictusand H. purpurissatus(Vachal, 1895), stat. rev.Twelve synonymies are established: Hylaeus praenotatusFörster, 1871 and Prosopis bicarinataPérez, 1903, n. syn.of Hylaeus gibbusSaunders, 1850; Prosopis nigripesPérez, 1903, synonym of Hylaeus confususNylander, 1852; Prosopis morawitziPérez, 1903, Prosopis perezianaCockerell, 1906, Prosopis perezianaSchulz, 1906 and Prosopis punctiscutaAlfken, 1909, n. syn.of Hylaeus distinguendusMorawitz, 1876; Prosopis stigmorhinaPérez, 1895, Prosopis stigmorhinavar. basalisPérez, 895, Hylaeus denisonaeCockerell, 1931, Hylaeus denisonae ifranensisCockerell, 1931 and Hylaeus psilurusCockerell, 1938, n. syn.of Hylaeus purpurissatus(Vachal, 1895).Lectotypes are designated for Prosopis pictaSmith, 1853, Hylaeus praenotatusFörster, H. psilurusCockerell and Prosopis purpurissataVachal.
