The geometric type and inverse Polýa-Eggenberger type distributions of waiting time for success runs of lengthk in two-state Markov dependent trials are derived by using the probability generating function method and the combinatorial method. The second is related to the minimal sufficient partition of the sample space. The first two moments of the geometric type distribution are obtained. Generalizations to ballot type probabilities of which negative binomial probabilities are special cases are considered. Since the probabilities do not form a proper distribution, a modification is introduced and new distributions of orderk for Markov dependent trials are developed.

It is desired to estimate a parameter with the loss function of the formL(θ, a)=W(‖θ−a‖), where is convex, differentiable, and non-decreasing. With this structure a characterization of Bayes estimators is given. Also it is noted that if the sample space, , for the observation,X, is a complete separable metric space then a Bayes estimator exists.

Existences and expressions of minimax estimators based on prior information for the optimum decomposition of a given sample space are studied in a unifying way such that answers can be easily obtained by applying the theorems given in this paper to various statistical problems—optimum selection regions, tolerance regions, prediction regions, optimum stratifications and so on.
